On this impromptu Easter Day installment of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega reflects on our collective discombobulation (and mass disinhibition), building our inner Noah's Ark to survive these dark times that are getting much worse and much faster with Trump's return to power, and the symbolism and metaphorical power of the Easter holiday and the spring season.  Following through on the importance of building our inner Noah's Ark and filling it with things that bring us joy, Chauncey shares his thoughts on this year's WWE WrestleMania 41 event, and what should have been an epic bout between John Cena and Cody Rhodes with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playing his part as "The Final Boss". Chauncey also shares what it was like to interview Peter Weller aka the star of Robocop at the C2E2 convention in Chicago last weekend. The titan Nikki Giovanni transitioned to the next stage of existence on December 9, 2024. This week's episode features Chauncey DeVega's conversation with Giovanni, which was shared here four years earlier, on December 8, 2020. *** Nikki Giovanni is one of America's greatest living poets. She has written dozens of collections of poetry as well as non-fiction and other work. Giovanni has received many awards and other honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and three NAACP Image awards for literature. She was also a central voice in the Black Arts Movement. Giovanni is currently University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Nikki Giovanni's new book is Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose. Giovanni reflects on truth-telling and writing as vocation, the color line, Black woman are uniquely suited for space travel, and why Black people keep struggling to save American society from its own racism and other iniquities. And Giovanni warns that America is ultimately doomed if it continues along is current trajectory.   WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? We also talk about the major Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news, including Leah Sava Jeffries' big win at the NAACP Image awards, as well as read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:34) Leah won the NAACP Image award! She is so deserving, it's not even funny. Hopefully this is just the first of many… we're looking at you, Emmy Awards. There's a new boxset with the first book in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, The Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo. It's the perfect gift for old Rick Riordan fans to give to new readers in their lives. Stacey Lee (beloved author of Winston Chu vs. The Whimsies) has a new book coming out April 23 called Kill Her Twice. It's a murder mystery set in 1932 Los Angeles Chinatown. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 favorites wrap up (00:15:13) Overall feelings for season 1? (Spoiler Alert: We liked it.) We have similar thoughts on our favorite episode. Kristen got into the doc first and stole all the best answers. We're big fans of impertinence. We're sensing a theme: We're big fans of the show's portrayal of Grover. There are some strong feelings about our favorite gods this season. What surprised us the most? Let's face it, we all wanted season 1 to be a million episodes, but eight still felt a little short to us. If we were in charge, what would we have changed about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Feedback (00:52:50) You guys had some really wonderful reactions to our adjustments to the podcast structure. Thanks for hanging with us as we find a new normal. We are taking a little time to gear up for the next round of episodes from Pass The Mic but did not want to leave you hanging. We've got back to back hits from the archives for you to enjoy in the meantime. New episodes return Feb 5th. With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.  Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was recently recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video, “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown's death at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri police. Dr. Moss was named to the inaugural Root 100, a list that “recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions,” according to the publication's website. Honorees range between ages 25 to 45 and their accomplishments and successes transcend media headlines or statistics. With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Moss' creative Bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Howard Thurman, Jazz, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation. The founder of Unashamed Media Group, a justice centered, faith-based agency committed to producing and curating stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind, Dr. Moss is the recipient of a 2016 NAACP Image award for his work, which includes providing biblical context and theological support to a myriad of groups and causes, including the #BlackLivesMatter and the #Occupy movements. His earlier publications include: Redemption in a Red Light District, and The Gospel According to the Wiz: And Other Sermons from Cinema. He co-authored The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation with three other contributors, and Preach! The Power and Purpose Behind Our Praise, with his father. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Monica Brown of Orlando, Florida, a Spelman College and Columbia University graduate. Is it possible for one person to write both award-winning literary speculative fiction and Marvel's newest “Captain America” series and also be a former civil rights lawyer, a film school graduate, and be less than 35 years old? If the person in question is author Tochi Onyebuchi, the answer is yes. In this episode, Julie and Eve talk with Tochi about his new novel, Goliath, a sweeping science fiction epic set in a post-apocalyptic America only thirty years from today. They also talk about Tochi's other new big project: in April Marvel Comics is debuting a new “Captain America” series, written by Tochi, that stars Sam Wilson as the first Black Captain America. In this wide ranging interview, Julie, Eve, and Tochi discuss everything from how he interwove themes of race, class, gentrification, climate change, and allyship in Goliath to what it was like for Tochi to go from being a Marvel fan to a Marvel author. Tochi describes, too, the array of themes that he is exploring with this new “Captain America” series: “If Captain America is a mimesis or even a synecdoche of America, then…what is it gonna look like if Captain America, as embodied in Sam Wilson, is enlisted in an effort at regime change? … What is that going to mean for Captain America, as is the subtitle of the book, ‘a symbol of truth'?” Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of the new novel Goliath, which is a New York Times Editor's Choice pick and the most anticipated pick for USA Today, Bustle, Buzzfeed, Goodreads, and Nerdist. He is also the author of the “Beasts Made of Night” series, “The War Girls” series, Marvel's “Black Panther Legends” limited series, and Marvel's upcoming “Captain America: Symbol of Truth” series. His first novel for adults, Riot Baby, was a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image awards, and winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction, the Ignite Award for Best Novella, and the World Fantasy Award. Elle Johnson is a TV writer. Her credits include Law & Order, CSI: Miami, Ghost Whisperer, and The Fosters. One of Elle's career highlights came on The Glades where she wrote and produced an episode set in the world of NASCAR that featured nine actual racecars, four champion drivers, and one monkey. She was co-showrunner on Netflix's Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker which won an NAACP Image award for best limited series. Most recently she was an Executive Producer on the Amazon original series Bosch, based on the Michael Connelly detective novels. Originally from Hollis, Queens Elle graduated from Harvard College, studied writing on a Rotary Scholarship at the University of East Anglia in England, and has taken numerous classes at UCLA Extension Writers' Program. She was a finalist for UCLA's 2015 Allegra Johnson Prize in Memoir Writing. The Officer's Daughter is her first book. SYNOPSIS When Elle Johnson was 16 years old, her 16 year-old cousin Karen had her face blown off at point blank range in a robbery at a Burger King in the Bronx. Elle comes from a family of black law enforcement officers. Her uncle, Karen's dad, was a homicide detective. Her father was a parole officer. The aftermath of Karen's murder, the cross-country manhunt spearheaded by the NYPD and the FBI to find the killers, and the subsequent trials and media circus, marked the defining end of Elle's childhood innocence. Thirty years later, living in Los Angeles, writing for various television shows (including several police procedurals), Elle receives an email from Karen's brother notifying her that one of the killers is up for parole. Asked to write a letter encouraging the parole board not to set him free Elle realizes that before she can write a letter condemning a man she's never met, she must also investigate the hard truths of her own past: family who never really spoke of the devastating effect the murder of her young cousin had on any of them, with secrets of their own, and a complicated father she never truly understood. The Officer's Daughter is the story of a family, a terrible tragedy, and the power--and ultimately the freedom--of forgiveness.
