I spent 20 years of my life as a pastor's wife. The role of a pastor's wife is a precarious space to occupy as stereotypes, expectations, and pressures abound! Collectively, through their Pastors' Wives Tell All ministry, they are breaking down walls within the Church and crushing the pastor's wife stereotypes with a little bit of ministry, therapy, and a whole lot of Jesus. In this episode, you'll hear:Some of the stereotypes people often carry of a pastor's wifeThe importance of pastors' wives finding their own callingWays that we can encourage and support those in this roleAnd so much more...This is an important conversation for all of us to understand better how to love the spouse of our pastor well.Show Notes: jillsavage.org/pastors-wives-208Get Details and Register for The Transform WeekendCheck out our other resources: Mark and Jill's Marriage Story Marriage Coaching Marriage 2.0 Intensives Speaking Schedule Book Mark and Jill to Speak Online Courses Books Marriage Resources: Infidelity Recovery For Happy Marriages For Hurting Marriages For Marriages Where You're the Only One Wanting to Get Help Mom Resources: New/Preschool Moms Moms with Gradeschoolers Moms with Teens and Tweens Moms with Kids Who Are Launching Empty Nest...
Pastors' wives have a lot of pressure on them. My first ever trio of guests on "Run The Race" (subscribe to it) know this all too well. These women in Columbus GA are now being very open about their lives, with humor and honesty, in a new book and on a podcast they've been hosting for the past 4 years. (3:28) Jessica Taylor, Jenna Allen and Stephanie Gilbert are focused on breaking down walls within the church and crushing pastors wifey stereotypes. They first chat with me about the struggles and joys of being in ministry and being married to a pastor. Are they expected to be perfect? What are some wins? What pressures do they face in their marriage and church? (10:44) There are also misconceptions about church leaders like them. All 3 of these moms and pastors' wives have tattoos. Reaction to those? They want to be themselves and ultimately see the church unified! (16:49) This trio created the brand "Pastors' Wives Tell All": https://www.pastorswivestellall.com/. That's the name of their book, released this year, and podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/4uYPezTHqopDVdwx8mA3tj. They talk about how and why they started the pod...teamwork with different gifts...being vulnerable and helping others have healing. Check them out on Instagram too. (24:14) The big message is: you are not alone. And they say the podcast is not just for people married for pastors, but anyone inside/outside the church, women, whoever doesn't feel like the fit in. And they have fun! (34:00) When I asked them about Identity... they asked, who are we without our job? And do we have to earn God's love? No. We talk about breaking down those titles to know who we are in Christ, and being grateful for where we are - including our family. (40:00) Along with some tidbits on what they do for fun and fitness...Stephanie, Jenna and Jessica describe what it was like being on TV for the 700 Club a few times and also releasing their book earlier this year! Each of them has 2-3 kids, and they're busier now with "Pastors' Wives Tell All," so being organized and saying NO to more things is crucial. What's next? They talk about a national conference they're speaking at in mid July...an Africa mission trip...retreats in other states this Fall...and a Pastors Wives cruise next year. (56:56) Stephanie closes us out in Prayer. I close the podcast in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. In a world that expects near perfection from people in ministry, it is hard to be honest about struggles of being a pastor's wife or a woman in ministry--let alone have a sense of humor about it! Jessica Taylor, Stephanie Gilbert, and Jenna Allen are on the show sharing a safe place for pastors' wives and women in ministry to be their most authentic selves. Join us as we address topics such as how to smash stereotypes, deal with marital issues, make friends, and overcome parenting anxiety. They remind pastors' wives (and the people in their congregations) that God doesn't expect them to be superhuman. If you're a pastor's wife--by calling, by choice, or by circumstance--you'll find relief, renewal, and refreshment in today's episode. Connect with PWTA: https://www.pastorswivestellall.com
This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm speaking with the authors of Pastors' Wives Tell All: Navigating Real Church Life with Honesty and Humor, Stephanie Gilbert, Jessica Taylor, and Jenna Allen. They are also the cohosts of the Pastors' Wives Tell All podcast - a podcast by pastors' wives for church leaders and anyone desiring to peek inside their proverbial glass houses. As best friends from three different churches and denominations, they are breaking down walls within the Church and crushing pastor wifey stereotypes with a little ministry therapy and a whole lot of Jesus—plus the occasional Instagram dance party! Key Points from Our Conversation: So often people pressure pastor's wives to meet certain expectations. When they don't, it can leave congregants feeling disappointed. The best way to not get lost in other's expectations of you is to remember who you are and who you belong to. We do not seek the approval of man, but rather to serve Christ. It's common for people to assume pastor's wives are too busy or that they have a large community they spend time with, but truthfully being a pastor's wife can be lonely. Support your pastor's wife by checking on her and including her in your events. When you're part of a pastor's family, it puts your life on display. People always seem to catch you in your worst moments and it can create disillusionment. The best solution is to create a new culture of vulnerability. Only then will walls start to break and change will happen. Seeking counseling is unfortunately still a taboo subject in the church. Some consider it a sign of weak faith and others believe that it's an attempt to replace God's counsel, but seeking therapy is not an either/or, it's a both/and. Faith is our foundation, but the Bible advises us to seek wise counsel. Lay down your pride and seek counseling from God and a professional therapist. What you don't talk about owns you. Changing the stigma around therapy in the church starts from the top. Your pastor is not a licensed counselor and there are times when it's wise to seek a licensed professional therapist. Let's Get Real Practical: Do you have a negative stigma about seeing a counselor? Ask the Lord if He's directing you to see a counselor. You can find a list of Christian counselors at The American Association of Christian Counselors or through Focus on the Family's Christian Counselor Network. Stephanie Gilbert wrote a letter to Jungsun Kim, the new owner of Richland Farm in Clarksville, Md. In the letter, Gilbert laid out centuries of her family's remarkable history: the five generations of her enslaved ancestors who had labored at Richland Farm and a neighboring plantation for one of Maryland's most prominent families. Gilbert explained in the letter that she'd established a relationship with the White descendant who had inherited Richland — the woman who had just sold the estate to Kim for $3 million. During a decade of visits to Richland, she said, “we've celebrated Juneteenth, commemorated the ancestors, wept for their trials, and celebrated their triumphs.”Then Gilbert made a request: Would Kim allow Gilbert, a stranger, to continue to visit the 133-acre estate where her enslaved ancestors are buried? –This story is part of a collection of new, occasional bonus episodes you'll be hearing from “Post Reports.” We're calling these stories “Deep Reads” and they're part of The Post's commitment to immersive and narrative journalism.Today's story was written by Sydney Trent and read by Adrienne Walker for Noa: News Over Audio, an app offering curated audio articles.

We chat about the unique challenges that all Pastor's wives face, how and where pastor's wives can find someone they can be fully honest with, and what we should…and shouldn't expect from our pastor and his family. Whether that's your audience on Instagram, the students in your group program, or a whole Facebook group loaded with potential customers or clients. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
The Gist of Freedom Welcomes Stephanie Gilbert to the reading and book discussion, Black Abolitionists by Benjamin Quarles with hosts, Preston Washington and Ty Gray-EL. One of The First, Interracial Riots, Blacks and Whites, Anti-Slavery Supporters Rioted together, in defense of Shadrach Minkins a Self-Emancipated black man "Fugitive Slave"! in 1851, a group of outraged black men burst into a courtroom in Boston and rescued Shadrach Minkins, the first escaped slave seized in New England under the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law. About 20 black men grabbed Minkins "by the collar and feet" and ran out the door, down the hallway and stairs, and into the crowded street. The crowd was so large and so hostile that the marshals dared not pursue the rescuers. Here is Stephanie Gilbert's great great grandfather's (Narrative) Account of what happened next... "A number of the colored people caught hold of the door and pulled it and took Shadrach out of the court house. Amid great excitement we run him off to Canada. Before sending him we run him to the west end and change his attire to that of a woman. It caused a great furor throughout the U.S, but we landed the fugitive beyond the reaches of the two legged blood hounds. Everybody who was suspected of having a hand in running him off to Canada were arrested. I happened to escape and being the first to give the alarm. Many had trials but none was convicted. This affair stirred us up in Boston. Hundreds of fugitive slaves fled from Boston after that. Some went to Canada, some to Halifax and some to St John's N.B. and spent the remainder of their days there. He was taken to a hiding place on Beacon Hill. That night, he began his journey on the Underground Railroad. Six days later, he arrived safely in Canada."
