Brainspotting: In Our Response Lies Our Growth & Our Freedom

A Quest for Well-Being

— Much like the body, the mind is capable of healing itself naturally. Psychologist and creator of Brainspotting Dr. David Grand believes the way people look and gaze can affect their feelings. The goal of Brainspotting is to enable people to target negative emotions by positioning their eyes in a certain way. Through trained brainspotting therapists, one's eyes are slowly guided across the field of vision until a brainspot becomes apparent, a location that evokes traumatic memories or painful emotions. There is increasing evidence that trauma is “stored” in the body and that it can alter the way the brain works. Trauma can, for example, have an effect on emotions, memory, and physical health. Brainspotting seems to activate the body's innate ability to heal itself from trauma. Disturbing memories can be replaced in the brain, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more resolved, peaceful things. Brainspotting makes use of this natural phenomenon through its use of relevant eye positions. This helps the brainspotting therapist locate, focus, process and release a wide range of emotionally and bodily-based conditions. It is also a brain-based tool to support the therapy relationship, as it taps into and harnesses the body's natural self-scanning, self-healing ability. Valeria interviews Susan Martin — She is a Board-Certified Marriage and Family Therapist practicing psychotherapy in a thriving private practice in Boise, Idaho. She is the founder of Susan Martin Therapy and Wellness working with adults struggling with the lasting effects of trauma, including developmental trauma experiences. Susan is certified in Brainspotting, a progressive and cutting-edge approach to treating the central nervous system's adverse responses to current life stressors. Susan helps clients who feel their past is keeping them from living their best futures, those whose bodies are tired of existing in survival mode, and those who are struggling with their relationships because of the somatic stress living with an always-activated central nervous system. Susan also specializes in depression, anxiety, the effects of shame, attachment wounds, and life and family changes and transition. Emotional health, nervous system health, neurobiology, and overall physical wellness are her passions. Her approach to her work is to treat the “whole” person and reach root causes of symptoms. Also, a certified life coach, Susan is currently developing a program to help heal and empower today's high-achieving, busy, must-do-it-all women who are lost in people-pleasing, drowning in expectations, and don't feel they have control of their lives to be authentically present, have deeper human connections, and have lasting healing from their pasts. As an adopted adult continually growing and rejuvenating from her own preverbal trauma, Susan feels deeply and is sensitive to the world around her. Susan's work represents a second career earning her Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy from Northcentral's School of Behavioral Sciences in her forties as a busy wife and mother of two teenaged girls. Always an integral focus in her work with clients are resilience, purpose, gratitude, and, of course, joy. Her favorite quote is from the great Viktor Frankl, famed psychiatrist, holocaust survivor, and author of Man's Search for Meaning, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” To learn more about Susan Martin and her work, please visit: https://susanmartintherapy.com/           — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. We are honored to be bringing another amazing story of God's protection, provision and peace today. Our host Sarah Schalow is sharing a conversation with Susan Martin-Warren.⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Child abuse of an infant is discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️Most parents would agree that something happening to their child would be their worst nightmare. That nightmare became a reality for Susan on April 1, 2005, when she got a call at work that her infant son had stopped breathing. What unfolded over the following hours and days changed the life of not only Susan but her two young boys forever. Susan shares what it was like navigating through discovering her son had been abused,  parenting her two boys as a single mom and following the Lord's leading in working in Child Abuse prevention. This conversation will leave you amazed at Susan's strength and how she continuously engaged with God and leaned into the Lord through the years. We are so thankful for Susan's willingness to share her family's story with us, and we hope that this story strengthens your faith in the One who is bigger than it all."A New Kind of Normal" by Carol Kent: https://www.amazon.com/New-Kind-Normal-Hope-Filled-Choices/dp/0849964717/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2RD87LZJORKZE&keywords=carol+kent+a+new+kind+of+normal&qid=1661884322&sprefix=carol+kent+a+new%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-1The Birth-to-Five Helpline: https://www.swhd.org/programs/health-and-development/birth-to-five-helpline/ Parent, Partners, Plus:  https://parentpartnersplus.com/ Dr. Harvey Karp – pediatrician that offers the 5 S' – techniques to calm a crying baby:  https://www.happiestbaby.com/blogs/baby/the-5-s-s-for-soothing-babiesWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? She shares what it means to be a good leader, the importance of listening and key it is to allow all meeting participants to have a voice. We cross over to California then to hear from a financial advisor, Daniele Beasley about her own Board Roles and her views on diversity initiatives from her vantage point. She has built a career of service focused on giving, and encourages us to do the same. Susan Martin is also a “giver” and as a change consultant is frequently called up to bring institutions through periods of transformational change. She describes the role of a Non-Executive Director as akin to a coach or a mentor, something that is more essential than ever now given the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) circumstances that we are living with today.   Our final guest Henry Tapper, dives into a subject that has been a lifelong passion for him – pensions transparency and equity.  Given that many Board and Trustee roles cover pensions we wanted to provide some insight into the themes of this area, such as the levels of choice available, the pensions gap between women and men and the future evolution of this area.  Her portfolio career includes a consulting role for pensions for purpose, coaching and strategic advice to firms, a chair role of future fit limited and roles as a charity trustee and director. It is clear that there is massive change ahead in the world of pensions – an area that will be relevant to all of us, but equally where many directors and trustees will find themselves in fiduciary positions.  I hope you found some food for thought here in this episode of FIftyfaces focus – The Next Chapter. Did you know that Rhode Island was home to one of the most famous librarians of all time? Frederick R. Goff was born in Newport in 1916 and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Brown. He joined the Library of Congress and assistant chief of the Rare Book Division in 1941 and then Chief in 1945, He served as the chair of the Rare Books and Manuscripts section of the Association of College and Research Libraries and president ofNow, we turn our feature story…. Springbrook elementary school teacher, Rebecca Mason was named Westerly's teacher of the year. When speaking with her, there is one word and variations of it that repeat — excitement, excited and exciting. Her colleagues and superiors use the same word to describe her and what she brings to the classroom. "She truly epitomizes all the best qualities of an elementary school teacher. I've never seen her without a smile on her face. She exudes warmth and kindness and excitement over learning," said Susan Martin, Springbrook Elementary School principal. Mason, who has taught in Westerly for about 17 years, was recently named the school district's Teacher of the Year for 2020-21. She learned of the honor on May 26 when administrators, with her husband joining, surprised her with the announcement as her distance-learning students peered in through their internet connections. "I tried to think about all of the experiences that built to that moment and realized that it's such a team effort. I think about all of the different teachers that shaped and modeled me," Mason said in a recent interview. Mason, who generally teachers first grade, has worked as a kindergarten distance-learning teacher this year. Each digital learning day, Mason said, starts with a smile in the form of a knock-knock joke and then working to help students attain the goals she developed for each of them at the start of the year. "Everything was so new. It was challenging but then we made it — being able to log in every morning and seeing the smiling faces and knowing we had students who still wanted to be with us and wanted to learn," Mason said. A note Mason received recently from a former student who is now in middle school serves as proof of the connection she makes with children in her classroom. "You made my world better because of your happiness and all my friends say I'm the nicest person [they] know," the note said. Kenneth, Barbara, Barbie, Virginia, and Susan Martin, known to the Rose City Park community as a cordial and compassionate family, were beloved citizens of 1950’s Portland Oregon. They were the front of the postcard for the post-war American dream, a household of happiness and hope, until it was all cut short by unexplainable, unsolved disappearances and deaths on December 7th, 1958, leaving all who knew them across Multnomah County and Northwest Oregon as a whole grasping for answers in a sea of evidence that drowned us all in doubt…As a hope to provide more substantial reasoning built upon observable evidence and situational analysis, this is an examination of the Martin Family Disappearance, and the decades worth of mysteries along Columbia River...This is Cold Case Detective.Case Files:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xuVzDFXekb1F6P7i3PuIAgxrKHyeyOtl?usp=sharingRelevant Links:[Main Wiki][KOIN 6 News Report][Amazon’s Echo of Distant Water Preview][Google Book’s Echo of Distant Water Preview][Kenneth’s Charlie Project Profile][Barbara’s Doe Network Profile] [Reddit Thread]Researched and written by TJ RueschEpisode narrated by William EarlMusic by CO.AG________Our episodes deal with serious and often distressing incidents. Date of publication: 06/07/2018 Description: The School of Security Studies at King's is not only home to the Depts of War Studies and Defense Studies, but it is also home to multiple research and teaching centres, one of which is the focus of today's podcast. The Centre for Science and Security Studies, or CSSS, is a multi-disciplinary research and teaching group that brings together scientific experts with specialists in politics, international relations and history across the Departments of War Studies and Defence Studies. Like many of the centre's that help form the School of Security Studies, CSSS plays a crucial role in teaching, particularly on MA courses. Three unique MA programs are run within CSSS: these include the MAs in Science and Security, Non-Proliferation and International Security, and Arms Control and International Security. Through these specialized courses, students have the opportunity to engage with technical and theoretical aspects of their respective areas of study, as well as gain practical experience engaging in policy debate and diplomacy through simulations. On the 12th of June, we caught Drs. Susan Martin and Hassan Elbahtimy for a quick discussion about the Centre's MA courses just before they headed off to lead this year's annual CSSS MA Simulation. ________________ This podcast was produced by Kirk Allen.

April 23, 2013 Human trafficking is one of the more complex and contentious social and political issues on today's global agendas. Both in the United States and abroad, its ethical challenges have engaged a wide range of faith actors, who bring energy, global networks, resources, and moral fervor to the movement. Cambodia, as a global hotspot for trafficking, offers a remarkable instance of how these issues present themselves in practice and how they are evolving over time. Active debates center on issues at the nexus of faith and development: global and national priorities, coordination of interventions and evaluation of results, the roles of evangelizing and proselytizing in a development or humanitarian context, and issues of gender justice. All are in play in Cambodia. Mark Lagon, Susan Martin, Jeremy Floyd, and Katherine Marshall will explore current efforts and initiatives in Cambodia and set them within the broader, global context of debates and partnerships around poverty.

Susan Martin: Climate Migration an Adaptation Strategy, But Displacement More Dangerous

Friday Podcasts From ECSP and MHI

“Migration is a risk management strategy,” says Susan Martin, the Donald G. Herzberg professor of international migration at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, in this week’s podcast. “It's a way people have coped for millennia when the environment changes.” But climate change is forcing a new calculus on many households and communities who face a dynamic mix of economic, political, demographic, and environmental pressures. “‘Migration’ can be a very positive thing for people,” says Martin, whereas “‘displacement’ may be positive in being lifesaving but not necessarily positive in terms of people's future wellbeing.” Martin sees the dichotomy between migration and displacement through a series of climate-induced shifts in mobility patterns. “Drought and rising sea levels are likely to lead to gradual movements of people,” she says. In fact, people manage these kinds of risks with anticipatory migration as environmental conditions decline. Often some family members “will stay and try to keep farming despite the drought,” while others “will move to cities or move to other countries in order to be able to diversify the sources of livelihood and sources of support for the family.” Acute natural disasters and competition over dwindling resources “will more likely lead to emergency displacement,” Martin says, and it is during these events where community resilience and vulnerability play out in critical ways. At-risk and vulnerable groups who cannot adapt as quickly will lose out on the positive aspects of migration as an adaptation strategy. “Research is showing only those with existing resilience possibilities and lesser levels of vulnerability are likely to benefit from even anticipatory migration,” Martin says. Government policies have a part to play in building resilience – or, conversely, exacerbating vulnerabilities. National governments have been slow to adopt legal frameworks that address these issues. “If there are no legal ways you can move,” Martin says, “whether it's internal or international, the chances are people are going to be at significantly higher risk.” Susan Martin spoke at a private event at the Wilson Center on August 31, 2015.
