This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

MOVIE DISCUSSION:Kathryn joins Melvin in discussing one of Wes Anderson's most celebrated films, The Royal Tenenbaums. The two enjoy discussing it's silly-yet-serious family drama, the effects of negligent parenting, and the absurdity of that scene involving a pop-song and a bathroom mirror. But most of all, the two enjoy discussing the idea that it's never too late to do the right thing.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 20-minutes discussing Asteroid City, Wes Anderson's latest film. Melvin asks Kathryn about Wes Anderson's ever-meticulous and quirky style, whether he's getting better with each movie or too hands-on, how the actors feel about playing such understated characters, and so much more. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)In their married couple, Kathryn is the spouse that watches Wes Anderson flicks. So, Melvin asks Kathryn about Anderson's portrait-like style, dead-pan humor, and favorite tropes.Melvin, "Everything's extravagant, but the family problems are 100% relatable."Watching Royal's maturation throughout the film is truly satisfying, and it's a delight to see him go from selfish leech to curiously caring father/grandfather.Discussing a few characters from the film, their dynamics, and what makes them different. As Henry Sherman shows kindness and respect to each of the Tenenbaums, each character has a moment of reflection wherein they see something better than they had as children.Eli Cash: To Be Pitied.Because Margot Tenenbaum has constantly been introduced as "adopted", it's no wonder she spent her life carelessly searching for where she belongs.Chas spends his time chasing safety and security likely in response to the lack of safety and security he felt with Royal while growing up.Discussing that scene with Richie. The symbolism of Richie's bird and learning to safely coexist.Recommendations:Purchase an External 4K Blu-ray Player for your PC so you can watch region-free films via VLC player, digitally store materials, and so much more!Pursue self-care with good, old hobbies and other simple enjoyments. Join us, if you like, in the perfectly imperfect house on Archer Avenue, where lived the once—great Tenenbaums, a family of geniuses. A decade of failure has brought us here, the Tenenbaum children scattered across New York and the seas, and their father, Royal, at last estranged. What will happen when we get everyone back under one roof? This is the start of our mini-series on the works of Wes Anderson, everyone's favorite symmetry-obsessed, pastel-painted auteur. In our exploration of The Royal Tenenbaums, we'll uncover mythological and historical connections hidden in the pastiche. Greek mythology, Roman family law, masculinity, and patriarchy are at play. — Check out our merch store for Midnight Myth, Boomerangerang, Sleep & Sorcery and Wheel of Ka tees and totes! Hello there and welcome to the 84th episode of Film Freakz, the podcast about movies! Each episode is all about a single movie! In this episode we discussed the movie The Royal Tenenbaums from 2001. This podcast features YemmytheFerret (Yemmy), justkalas (Kalas), Taymation Studios (Tay), and GreedyWaffle (Nick). This movie was chosen by kalas who hates track suits. Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children and then they separated. All three children are extraordinary --- all geniuses. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. "The Royal Tenenbaums" is the story of the family's sudden, unexpected reunion one recent winter. Directed by Wes Anderson. Thanks for listening on all platforms! We want YOUR recommendations for the FAN VOTE! Send them in by commenting on the YouTube version, messaging us on our social medias, or sending us an email!

We're wrapping up our Knives Out series with some of our favorite rich and/or dysfunctional families in fiction that could give the Thrombeys a run for their (significant amount of) money, from the Bluths to the Roys to the Tenenbaums. The mysterious Thrombey house that's described as "living in a CLUE board" also leads us to explore some of our real favorite creepy old homes, like the Winchester Mystery House. Of course, we wrap things up by discussing our results of the "Which Character Are You?" quiz. In case you want to take the quiz yourself. Comparing the Thrombey and Roy families. Mysterious houses. We are on Twitter and Instagram, where we often post supplementary content, like book recommendations, memes, and dad jokes! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pop-dna-podcast/message
On the podcast this time, Stabby Steven and Sean are moving back home and dealing with some serious family issues in the 2001 film from Wes Anderson, The Royal Tenenbaums. I can't even begin to imagine what the Thanksgiving dinners at the Tenenbaums must have been like. The holidays are a stressful time for a normal family, much less one that's probably pictured next to the dictionary definition of “dysfunction.” Imagine what that must have been like: sullen children wishing they could be anywhere else, a mother weighed down by her husband's behavior, and a father who's critiquing how dry the turkey is even as he insists on cutting and serving it himself. That's not a holiday of which I would want to be a part. And yet, Owen Wilson's character, Eli Cash, wanted nothing more than to be a Tenenbaum. Different strokes, I guess. When you're brought up and heralded by the media as a child geniuses—nay, part of a trio of family geniuses—then there's bound to be something a little off with you. Speaking of which, dear listener of this podcast, if you were a child genius or savant of some sort, please write in and tell us about your life. We'd love to hear your tale. We imagine it's probably similar to what the Tenenbaum children—Richie, Chas, and the adopted daughter, Margot—had to endure. Talk about pressure! It's no wonder that all three of them cracked in their own ways. Frankly, I'd be surprised if any of them turned out to be “normal.” Now that would be worth some serious attention. None of this is helped by their asshole of a father, Royal. Ugh, that guy. It's a damn shame that it took some serious family tragedy for him to snap out of himself and appreciate what he has. He probably could have saved his marriage if he had done that sooner. All of this nonsense makes for a captivating, fun, and endlessly watchable film. It's something that keeps rewarding you. Your first viewing will be a unique and enviable experience. Your tenth viewing will be just as enjoyable. Maybe some of the surprises will be gone, but there's enough depth here to draw you in as few films can. Dr. David A. Tenenbaum, Author of Accused of Treason, is a civilian mechanical engineer who works for the Army at the TACOM base in Warren, Michigan. In 1997, he was falsely accused of being an Israeli spy—and having dual loyalty to the State of Israel simply because he is Jewish—by a known anti-Semite and several other anti-Semitic coworkers who referred to Tenenbaum as the “little Jewish spy.” The FBI conducted a full-scale criminal investigation of Tenenbaum and his family. It resulted in an official report to FBI Director Louis Freeh, that there was no evidence Tenenbaum had ever done anything wrong. In fact, Tenenbaum was not even working on classified programs. Instead, he was concentrating on an approved and unclassified program known as the Light Armor Systems Survivability (LASS) to up-armor the Army's HMMWVs because, following Somalia, it was a known fact that the HMMWVs were death traps. The Tenenbaums' federal lawsuit for religious discrimination was dismissed after the Army falsely claimed that they “would not be able to disclose the actual reasons or motivations for their actions without revealing state secrets.” Senator Carl Levin ordered the IG-DOD to investigate the Tenenbaum case and determine if the Army was guilty of anti-Semitism. After over two years, the IG-DOD issued a report which confirmed that the US Army was guilty of anti-Semitism. To this day, the Army refuses to make Tenenbaum whole and compensate him for the false accusations against him. Tenenbaum is one of the only persons for whom a favorable Inspector General report has been issued to not be compensated. The government has never been held accountable for their anti-Semitism. Dan Meyer, who investigated this case, is the Managing Partner of Tully Rinckey PLLC's Washington, D.C. office, has dedicated more than 25 years of service to the field of Federal Employment and National Security law as both a practicing attorney and federal investigator and senior executive. Throughout three Presidential administrations, Dan promoted the federal whistleblowing mission and its related policies and statutes. As the Intelligence Community's (IC) foremost whistleblowing subject-matter expert from 2013 to 2017, he served as the Executive Director for Intelligence Community Whistleblowing & Source Protection and was instrumental in establishing the IC's first program of its kind. From 2004 to 2013, Dan served the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General first as Director of Civilian Reprisal Investigations and then as Director of Whistleblowing and Transparency. In these positions, he investigated or provided oversight to numerous high-profile cases, among them disclosures involving the 9/11 attacks, the abuse of polygraph procedures in counterintelligence cases, the use of the security-clearance decision-making process to reprise and discriminate, and the treatment of soldiers and their remains after injury or death. In the interview, investigator Meyer tells us how we can pressure members of Congress to open an official investigation into this incredible miscarriage of justice. Accused of Treason is a page turner, and will make your blood boil as you read how an Orthodox Jewish man was specifically targeted by antisemitic superiors and co-workers.

Here comes some comedy mixed with tragedy to kick off Year #2 of the Next 100 Project. In this 45th episode (that kinda starts out as the Grand Budapest Hotel podcast, actually), we tackle the hilarious performance by Gene Hackman and Wes Anderson’s admirable determination to go his own twee way. Of course, there’s more, but why ramble on here? Order up some Sparkplug Coffee and press play!
Hey, friends! Christmas is almost here, and this year, that can only mean one thing: we are one episode closer to Gabe's last as co-host of Mousterpiece Cinema. This week, Josh and Gabe are talking about a now-15-year old film that set the standard for countless indie films along with a very well-known TV show: The Royal Tenenbaums, from director Wes Anderson and featuring Gene Hackman, Luke Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, and more. Josh and Gabe are joined by Keith Phipps of Uproxx (and now a member of the podcast's Five-Timers' Club) to talk about Tenenbaums, its cast, its style, and more. Is it possible that this is one of your hosts' favorite movies ever? Is it possible that your other host thinks it's...not nearly that good? (But pretty good, still.) Find out now!
Back in 2001, Wes Anderson was known as the director of the modest indie hit RUSHMORE. Then came THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, with its family full of failed former prodigies and iconic soundtrack. It arguably remains his most beloved film. But how does TENENBAUMS hold up 15 years later? Adam and Josh, along with former co-host (and notable TENENBAUMS skeptic) Sam Van Hallgren, have a Sacred Cow review. The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Spine Number: 300 Director: Wes Anderson Genre: Comedy No matter how much you love a filmmaker there will almost always be one or two films on his or her resume that just don't connect with you. Everything else might be good, fantastic, or brilliant... but it's almost impossible for someone have a 100% success rate. Well... for Wes Anderson, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou falls into that category. On paper, this film has everything. It's Wes following up Tenenbaums with Bill Murray in a bigger part, you have Owen Wilson, WIllem Dafoe, Cate Blanchette, Angelica Houston, and music from David Bowie and Mark Mothersbaugh. Honestly, what could go wrong? It's clear from the beginning that this film is a labor of love. Wes Anderson is a big fan of Jacques Cousteau, his work is a plot point in Rushmore, and this is his attempt to pay tribute to one of his influences. But there is just something missing. It's not a bad movie, but from someone who can produce such fantastic work as Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, an OK movie just doesn't feel OK. So, check it out and see what you think. Did we miss something, or did this movie just miss us? Next Week: Spine number 322: Mr. Arkadin, AKA Confidential Report. Also, check this out. In this episode, we discuss our favorite screenwriters (and usually directors) including Wes Anderson, Charlie Kaufman and the Brothers Coen (Joel & Ethan). We explore themes and favorite movies as well as the latest in geek news and updates on our geek goals! As usual, our wonderful intro/outro music is "We are Highscore" by Krackatoa
Some of us have always wanted to be Tenenbaums, even if they are such a sad bunch of folks. In this classic comedy-drama from Wes Anderson, family isn't a word...it's a sentence. Nowhere else in Anderson's storied catalogue has there been quite a collection of lovable characters. It's why many consider this his best film. Kathleen returns to the podcast to discuss this storybook tale with Andrew and Phil. The discussion ranges from the feel of Wes Anderson movies to hilarious pratfalls by Danny Glover. Check it out. More talk on the career of Wes Anderson
The guys talk about the career of writer/director Wes Anderson, our favorite scenes and tropes of his, and costume ideas for a Wes Anderson-Themed party
We talk with Rob Kubus about Wes Anderson and use Tenenbaums as our jumping off point. Justin is unsure about Wes' cuteness and Brian has always been a huge fan, especially of his early stuff. NOTE: apologies for the sound quality of Rob's voice in this one. We hope to hit Wes again, possibly touching on The Life Aquatic.
This week Larry is joined by his friend and coworker Grant McElheny as they discuss the films of Wes Anderson, specifically Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums. Is Larry now a fan of Mr. Anderson? Listen and find out as Larry and Grant go in depth and on several tangents about music, Kristen Wiig, how the wealthy are portrayed in movies and many other things. This week's Drum Groove discusses Phil Collins and Genesis and, perhaps unfortunately, features a vocal performance by our host.
Friend and favorite to the show Regina Barry returns for a monumental discussion on the beloved auteur Wes Anderson. In addition to talking about all his films, we discuss RESOLUTION, CONCUSSION, THE ONE I LOVE and more. Included at the very end of the episode is a brief discussion on The Beatles of all things. Also, I give a special announcement at the beginning which details how the rest of the year will be for me and I couldn't be more grateful and appreciative for my co-host and dear friend Patrick. Dan and Garrett attempt to unpack their complicated feelings about Wes Anderson as they talk about their favorite of his filmography, Rushmore. While some of Anderson's other films might seem more fitting of Movie Movie status, Rushmore balances his sense of style with a slightly more grounded world populated with slightly more believable characters than his other films. In doing so Anderson creates his funniest, most rewatchable film.
Nathan and Scotty discuss the genius of Ralph Fiennes, share a few Robert Osborne (TCM) stories and chart the evolution of film snobbery. The Grand Budapest Hotel solidifies director Wes Anderson and his place as an auteur for the ages. You’ll never forget the first screening of this film. A teenage Jackson Browne wrote this world-weary classic (some know it as a Nico song; some know it as a Gregg Allman song...) while living in sunny southern California. Since then, it has been covered in a variety of styles, undergone some drastic changes, and seems to have returned to its owner in a matured, but similar state as it was in when he first gave it to the world. Browne can now sing his jaded words with some wisdom instead of teen angst. We'll hear several treatments of the song from 1967 to now.
