This music is at its best when the artist is telling you exactly who they are. Pianist Andrew Hill always seemed able to take us inside his internal mindscape of thoughts, puzzles and emotions. Whether alone or in an ensemble, in both his playing and his writing, he did so with an articulateness that could seem offhand but betrayed a distinct precision. It was just... him. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum knew Andrew Hill and draws inspiration from him to this day. Host Mitch Goldman is going to ask him if he really was the way he seemed in his music. Did he talk the way he played? Once again, the WKCR archives come through with gobsmacking rarities from both the early Seventies and the early 2000s. Indy talks about Ethiopian Jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, Samantha's latest beach read is With You All the Way by Cynthia Hand, and then we prepare to watch the (maybe) greatest film of all time: Citizen Kane! Plus; Scarface, books for 16 year olds, The Sixth Sense spoilers, bunk, Ed Wood, and more! Mulatu Astatke (ሙላቱ አስታጥቄ, born 19 December 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger considered as the father of "Ethio-jazz". Born in Jimma, Mulatu was musically trained in London, New York City, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music. Mulatu led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums—instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music—as well as other percussion instruments, keyboards, and organs. His albums focus primarily on instrumental music, and Mulatu appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during the Ethiopian Golden Age in 1970s.

One of Africa’s pioneering modern artists, Mulatu Astatke is considered the ‘father of Ethio-jazz’, the multi-instrumentalist skillfully fusing African, American and European rhythms. After writing music for and performing with Duke Ellington, he set Ethiopia’s modern golden age of music into motion in the 1970s, with his music now having been sampled by Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West and Nicolas Jaar, among others. Sally Mousa spoke to Mulatu before he took to the stage with his band for an electrifying concert at the opening of the Africa Hall in Sharjah.
Geoff and I are here to bring some of that Punk, some of that Blues, some of that... Jazz? Oh yeah! Our first featured artist on the show is MULATU ASTATKE of ETHIOPIA! Of course we also bust out some great jams from France, Belgium, India, Kenya, Mexico, Colombia, and... Hollywood? Why not!? Enjoy! I'm putting up links to my Dropbox where I have uploaded all my past podcasts, some mixes I did for various websites and magazines as well as the live mixes that were recorded in Budvar, Montenegro, during the summer of 2007. I'm afraid you'll have to dig around on this blog to find the track listings of the Podcasts.Mixeshttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Mixes/deluxe.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Mixes/enlace.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Mixes/milk.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Mixes/soulstrut.mp3Podcastshttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/01%20heavyusker4.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/Bongomez.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/Deep%20Podcast.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker1.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker2.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker3.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker5.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker6.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker7.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker8.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker9.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker10.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker11.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker12.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/heavyusker13.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Podcasts/radio%20madrid.mp3Montenegrohttp://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Montenegro/Heavy%20Usker%20%2019%20%2008%20%202007.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Montenegro/Heavy%20Usker%2022%20%2008%20%202007.mp3http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40039050/Montenegro/Heavy%20Usker%2023%20%2008%20%202007.mp3

i'm afraid i'm having to dig into the archives of old mixes (but still good ones!) because i just don't have time to do a new podcast right now... another tour of north, central and south america is looming. this mix i did for "brokenbeat radio" and "department deluxe" over three years ago but i was listening to it today in the gym while sweating my head off on the treadmill and its not bad, even if i say so myself. when i get back from my travels i'll do another podcast, i promise!Excerpt From Kojak / A Question Of Honor / Peter Pan RecordsChristian Zimmermann / Diary Of A Lost Girl / BBESolid Groove / Flookin / Loungin RecordsPaolo Fedreghini / Please Don't Leave / SchemaAntonio Ocasio / Amazonia, Corazon De Brasil / Tribal WindsRuss Gabriel / Jelba / S.M.A.L.LStudio Uno Band / Di Bi Di / WhiteThe Mighty Bop Feat. (from the journal of san diego.) The contemporary expression employed in Spain to indicate a man whose family is out of town and is temporarily a "bachelor" is estar de Rodríguez ("to be Rodríguez), indicating the alias usually assumed during extra-marital relationships, such as "Jones" or "Smith" would be used in similar situations in the United States.so what better way to use my time other than to do another podcast!earl bostic - harlem nocturne (gusto)shankar jaikishan - mishra pilu (hmv)the polyversal souls - sad nile (fryers recordings)me & you - the hoop loop (tru thoughts)mo' horizons - green day (agogo)nina simone - funkier than a mosquito's tweeter (rca)the dubben band - dubbicho (resense)astrud gilberto - beginings (verve)baden powell - blues a volonte (mps)nino ferrer - les cornichons (riviera)roy castle - voodoo girl (cbs)nostalgia 77 - wildflower (tru thoughts)idris mohammed - could heaven ever be like this?
