They're creepy, kooky, and altogether ooky - The Addams Family! Today we're talking about the quotable cult classic with a perfect, Disney-Goth aesthetic - ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES. We chat about the enduring legacy of The Addams Family and their post-50s, post-Reagan politics, the iconic cast (Joan Cusack! Angelica Houston! Christina Ricci!) turning in scene-stealing performances, Barry Sonnenfeld's commitment to a visual bit, and Wednesday's epic and meme-worthy Thanksgiving speech. Plus, we wax poetic about early crushes, and Steph tells a harrowing story about Raul Julia's rogue eyeball. Looking for a tee with the best nerdy designs by independent artists from around the web?

The Limelight, the Tunnel, Club USA, and the Palladium were among the most successful and popular clubs in New York City and around the world. Across four decades, the clubs’ mysterious and ambitious owner, PETER GATIEN, was the man behind the curtain. Here, for the first time, the mogul and impresario of global nightlife tells his own story of those heady and fascinating times. THE CLUB KING: My Rise, Reign, and Fall in New York Nightlife (Little A; April 1, 2020) - offers an inside account of the meteoric rise and stunning takedown of Gatien’s nightclub empire. From the blue-collar Canadian mill town of Gatien’s childhood to the freedom of the ’70s, through the excesses of the ’80s to the conservative crackdown in the ’90s, THE CLUB KING looks at nightlife’s golden era. In his early 20s, Gatien opened his first club: the Aardvark, in his hometown of Cornwall, Ontario, with an as yet unknown band named Rush as his opening-night act. Always looking for the next big thing, Gatien moved south to the United States, opening clubs in Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago before taking on the city that never sleeps. When the Limelight opened in an old church in 1983, it was like nothing that had come before it, and its owner let the space speak for itself. Soon after, he and his team of innovators further created the backdrop for New York nightlife, expanding his empire to include the Tunnel, Club USA, and the Palladium, each with its own vibe and scene every night of the week, and catering to people from all walks of life: from disenfranchised club kids to the newly rising grunge and hip-hop scene, gay or straight, punks, rock ’n’ roll and techno—all were welcomed into Gatien’s alluring world. The Limelight rose to worldwide fame by booking major acts such as Prince, Whitney Houston, Pearl Jam, Guns N’ Roses, Lenny Kravitz, the Ramones, Mötley Crüe, and Billy Idol, while hosting a pantheon of A-list celebrities that included Mick Jagger, Madonna, Cher, David Bowie, Jack Nicholson, Angelica Houston, and Duran Duran, to name a few. Andy Warhol co-hosted the openings of many of Gatien’s venues and was a frequent patron. At the Tunnel, Gatien created legendary Sunday night hip-hop parties, with performers like Jay-Z; 50 Cent; Sean Combs, a.k.a. Puff Daddy; the Notorious B.I.G.; Mary J. Blige; and Missy Elliott. But as fabulous as the hedonistic high was, it was inevitable that the fall would be just as cataclysmic. At the height of Gatien’s success in the mid-1990s, New York became strict under mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Targeted by Giuliani and the U.S. government, Gatien was accused of encouraging the use of illegal drugs at his clubs, and his high-profile federal trial captivated New York headlines for months. A murder, a sting, and aggressive bullying from both the feds and local police ultimately brought down Gatien’s empire, landing him in the hands of ICE. He was eventually deported to his native Canada.’

Author John Wray joins co-hosts Medaya Ocher and Kate Wolf to read from and discuss his critically-lauded new novel, Godsend; which has found its way onto many best of 2018 lists. Godsend tells the story of Aden, a young woman from Santa Rosa who travels to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border region shortly before 9/11, converts to Islam, disguises herself as a male and joins the Taliban as a fighter. John Wray tells us the almost-equally-amazing backstory to the novel, which stems from his time in Afghanistan as a reporter for Esquire; and his motivations for immersing himself so completely in Aden's world. Also, author and podcast host Karina Longworth returns to recommend Angelica Houston's second memoir, Watch Me.

Don’t miss the first part of this retrospective in MMO episode 72. This pod picks up where we left off with the category as we “discuss” AKA scream like maniacs about the Rom Com genre, it’s effects on man/woman relationships, and the Nora Ephron script for When Harry Met Sally. Mike No 1 is in rare form and bashes this story unrecognizable, but draws some serious parallels to modern times in his outrage. Also Mike tries to point out some of the film’s positives despite the smouldering volcano sitting across the table from him, and you don’t wanna miss any podcast featuring a man and a volcano, but this episode in particular is explosive to say the least. Steven Soderberg has had a unique and illustrious career, and this indie smash hit was the film that launched it. We bio the unlikely production journey of Steven S, chronicle that amazing career, and then dive into our review of Sex, Lies, and Videotape, another time capsule of a movie that stays relevant long after it’s unearthed. Woody Allen has been persona non grata in Hollywood circles over the past year, a long overdue reckoning as it seems, and we bio the controversial and prolific career of the New York filmmaker before breaking down the text and perhaps, insidious subtext of his Oscar nominated screenplay for Crimes and Misdemeanors starring Mia Farrow, Allen, Angelica Houston, and Martin Landau. It’s fascinating to review this film under the fresh eyes of our current Times Up society, and we try to bring our critical best. The retrospective comes to a resounding conclusion with our Perfecting Perfection segment where we first rerank the nominees as we see fit. Then we discuss the year of 1989 at large and countdown our favorite films. If you enjoyed this retrospective, check out previous installments. Nancy Pfister, heir to Buttermilk Mountain, the world-renowned site of the Winter X Games, was Aspen royalty, its ambassador to the world. She lived among the rich and famous: she partied with Hunter S. Thompson, dated Jack Nicholson, had a joint baby shower with Goldie Hawn, and globetrotted with Angelica Houston. She was also a philanthropist, admired for her generosity. But behind the warm façade, she could be selfish, manipulative, and careless. Pfister enjoyed bragging about her wealth and celebrity connections, but those closest to her, like Kathy Carpenter, Pfister's personal assistant, drinking companion, and on one occasion lover, knew better. In 2013, after a long fall from grace, Dr. William Styler and his wife, Nancy, relocated to Aspen to reinvent themselves. They'd lived the high life before a misguided lawsuit left them near poverty, and Nancy Pfister was their answered prayer. She took them in, gave them a place to live, and allowed them to launch their new spa business. Everything seemed perfect until Pfister turned on them, making increasingly irrational demands and threatening to throw them out on the street. When Nancy was found beaten to death in her own home, the Stylers and Carpenter were all under suspicion for the gruesome murder. But in this close-knit, wealthytown set on keeping its reputation and secrets safe from the public eye, the police struggled to solve the mystery of what really happened. SHADOW ON THE MOUNTAIN: Nancy Pfister, Dr. William Styler and the Murder of Aspen's Golden Girl-Stephen and Joyce Singular

The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Spine Number: 300 Director: Wes Anderson Genre: Comedy No matter how much you love a filmmaker there will almost always be one or two films on his or her resume that just don't connect with you. Everything else might be good, fantastic, or brilliant... but it's almost impossible for someone have a 100% success rate. Well... for Wes Anderson, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou falls into that category. On paper, this film has everything. It's Wes following up Tenenbaums with Bill Murray in a bigger part, you have Owen Wilson, WIllem Dafoe, Cate Blanchette, Angelica Houston, and music from David Bowie and Mark Mothersbaugh. Honestly, what could go wrong? It's clear from the beginning that this film is a labor of love. Wes Anderson is a big fan of Jacques Cousteau, his work is a plot point in Rushmore, and this is his attempt to pay tribute to one of his influences. But there is just something missing. It's not a bad movie, but from someone who can produce such fantastic work as Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, an OK movie just doesn't feel OK. So, check it out and see what you think. Did we miss something, or did this movie just miss us? Next Week: Spine number 322: Mr. Arkadin, AKA Confidential Report. Also, check this out.
