We'll discuss the show's ensemble cast and introduction to Easy Company, our expectations for the series going forward & whether or not we are hooked yet, and the interesting story structure of this first episode. Brothers in the Making: Analyze the episode's focus on Easy Company's training and the bonds formed through shared experiences. Ensemble Cast & Character Introductions: Analyze the show's large cast and how the first episode introduces the core characters of Easy Company. Cliffhanger & Serialized Storytelling: Discuss the episode's cliffhanger ending and its effectiveness in drawing viewers into the series. Don't miss this episode for a powerful introduction to Band of Brothers, fueled by classic cocktails and engaging discussions. TIMESTAMPS: 00:00:00.000 - 00:05:14.591 - Episode Introduction, Dylan has never seen any of the show but remembers his Dad watching it when he was growing up, Ben tried to watch it with his wife who dropped out after the first episode, and we complain when people recommend a show and say “you just have to make it past the first season, then it gets really good.” 00:05:14.592 - 00:12:30.749 - Details on Band of Brothers (Awards, IMDb rating, Cast & Crew), We discuss the amazing ensemble cast, how a lot of major characters can get a bit confusing, and the (lack of?) introduction of each of the main characters. 00:12:30.750 - 00:18:04.750 - We deep dive into Sobel as an interesting and complex ‘villain' of the first episode, how Easy Company rallies around Winters, and how Sobel was basically sent to M.A.S.H. 00:18:04.751 - 00:25:53.723 - Dylan is intrigued by the story structure, this isn't a pilot episode but its a huge building into a BIG episode 2, Ben loves the cinematography and Dylan praises how well the VFX holds up. 00:25:53.724 - 00:34:58.772 - Are you hooked/sold on the series from episode 1? Dylan is excited to see the character development and camaraderie over the series, Ben used all of his Will Power to not continue watching, and we discuss how this series' cliffhangers are perfect for streaming. 00:34:58.773 - 00:42:58.368 - How was the casting? David Schwimmer was an interesting choice for a military officer but plays the role so well, we're interested to see how Nixon and Winters will develop over time, and how the new officer will play into the Company's dynamic.  00:42:58.369 - 00:46:10.818 - Its going be interesting to go back and watch this series week by week, how we used to have to watch TV before streaming.  00:46:10.819 - We decide to wait to finish the series to rate the whole thing, watch along with us if you haven't seen the series or want to rewatch, and outros. In the spirit of Christmas we thought we would re release our Xmas episode from 2022 - Love Actually. The whole team where on board for this one and it could have been the episode that sealed the deal for Damo. Merry Xmas from the team at Born to Watch, we hope you have a great New Year"Love Actually," directed by Richard Curtis, is a romantic comedy that has become a staple in the genre, especially during the holiday season. Released in 2003, the film weaves together a tapestry of stories that explore the various facets of love. Set in London, the movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring names like Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, and many others. Its narrative structure, which interlinks multiple storylines, has been both praised and criticized, making it a film that invites diverse opinions. The movie opens with a monologue by Hugh Grant's character, who observes that love is all around, even in the most unexpected places. This sets the tone for the film, which delves into different types of love: romantic, platonic, unrequited, and familial. Each story thread explores these themes with varying degrees of success. One of the most heartwarming stories involves the new Prime Minister, played charmingly by Hugh Grant, who falls for a member of his household staff. This storyline shines due to Grant's effortless charisma and the sweet, albeit somewhat clichéd, narrative. Another compelling narrative is that of a writer (Colin Firth) who, after being cheated on, finds love in a foreign country with someone who doesn't speak his language. This story charmingly illustrates how love can transcend barriers. However, not all stories hit the mark. The plot involving Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson's characters, dealing with infidelity, is more somber and adds a necessary depth to the film. Thompson's performance, in particular, is a standout, capturing the heartache and complexity of her character with subtlety and grace. On the other hand, the story of a young boy who learns to play the drums to impress his crush feels somewhat out of place, albeit it adds a cute and lighthearted element to the film.A notable aspect of "Love Actually" is its ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments. The film's comedic timing is impeccable, with several laugh-out-loud moments that balance the more serious undertones. The script is witty, and the actors deliver their lines with a natural ease that makes the dialogue feel authentic. The film's use of music is another strength. The soundtrack complements the narrative beautifully, enhancing both the emotional and humorous scenes. The iconic scene where Hugh Grant's character dances through 10 Downing Street to the tune of "Jump" by The Pointer Sisters is both hilarious and endearing.Visually, "Love Actually" captures the essence of London during Christmas time. The cinematography showcases the city's beauty, with scenes set against iconic landmarks and picturesque streets. The Christmas setting adds a magical quality to the film, making it a popular choice during the holiday season.Despite its strengths, "Love Actually" has faced criticism for some of its storylines and character portrayals. Certain plots seem underdeveloped, and a few characters come across as one-dimensional. Additionally, the film has been critiqued for its lack of diversity, both in terms of its cast and the types of love stories portrayed. In terms of performances, the ensemble cast delivers uniformly strong performances. Hugh Grant's charming and slightly awkward Prime Minister is both funny and endearing. Emma Thompson's portrayal of a wife grappling with her husband's potential infidelity is deeply moving. Alan Rickman, as always, brings a nuanced depth to his role. The younger members of the cast, like Keira Knightley and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, also add a fresh energy to the film."Love Actually" has had a significant cultural impact since its release. Its format of interweaving stories has influenced many other films in the romantic comedy genre. Additionally, its mix of humor, romance, and drama set a new standard for ensemble romantic comedies. In conclusion, "Love Actually" is a film that encapsulates the complexities and joys of love in its many forms. While it has its flaws, the film's charm, wit, and heart make it a beloved classic. Its portrayal of love as messy, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful resonates with audiences, making it a film that continues to be cherished, especially during the holiday season. The performances, soundtrack, and visual appeal add to its enduring popularity, making it a movie that stands the test of time in the romantic comedy genre.

Con Air takes flight this week's Four Play, featuring a cast brimming with top stars and character actors from 1997. The film serves up some amazing action sequences, stunt work, and excellent over-the-top performances, which should leave viewers satisfied if they "buy in" to the absurd premise. Even the movie's obvious flaws, such as the overly fast pacing, terrible writing, and massive plot holes are also hilarious to discuss given the over-the-top tone. While certainly not a subtle or artistic piece of cinema, Con Air serves its role well as one of the ultimate popcorn action flicks and stands as a symbol of the genre's excesses in the late 1990's.

Today's movie is Magnolia directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.Magnolia has a tendency to wander into the kind of melodrama that can feel like it's trying a bit too hard. Compared to PTA's later work, the movie feels messy and unfocused, and there's a confidence that he finds in his later films that feels like it's missing from Magnolia. The other big problem with this film is that many of the scenes are just not interesting, which is especially noticeable after watching Pulp Fiction. Thanks for joining us for another episode! Soderbergh's use of stylish visuals, smooth camera movements, and vibrant color palettes further enhance the film's overall aesthetic, giving it a sleek and sophisticated feel. The cinematography by Soderbergh himself, under the pseudonym Peter Andrews, is a visual feast. Peaky Blinders is an epic centred on a crime family of mixed Irish Catholic and Romani origins based in Birmingham, England, starting in 1919, several months after the end of the First World War in November 1918. It centres on the Peaky Blinders street gang and their ambitious, cunning crime boss Tommy Shelby (Murphy). The gang comes to the attention of Major Chester Campbell (Neill), a detective chief inspector in the Royal Irish Constabulary sent over by Winston Churchill from Belfast, where he had been sent to clean up the city of the Irish Republican Army flying columns, the Communist Party of Great Britain, street gangs, and common criminals.Winston Churchill (played by Andy Nyman in series 1 and Richard McCabe in series 2) charged him with suppressing disorder and uprising in Birmingham and recovering a stolen cache of arms meant to be shipped to Libya. The first series concluded on 3 December 1919—"Black Star Day", the event where the Peaky Blinders plan to take over Billy Kimber's betting pitches at the Worcester Races. The second series has the Peaky Blinders expand their criminal organisation in the "South and North while maintaining a stronghold in their Birmingham heartland." It begins in 1921 and ends with a climax at Epsom racecourse on 31 May 1922, Derby Day.The third series starts and ends in 1924, as it follows Tommy and the gang entering an even more dangerous world as they once again expand, this time internationally. The third series also features Father John Hughes (Paddy Considine), who is involved in an anticommunist organisation; Ruben Oliver (Alexander Siddig), a painter whom Polly enlists to paint her portrait; Russian Grand Duchess Tatiana Petrovna (Gaite Jansen); and Linda Shelby (Kate Phillips), new wife of Arthur. The fourth series begins on Christmas Eve 1925, with the Peaky Blinders getting word that the New York Mafia is coming to avenge the murders they committed the previous season and ends following the general strike of May 1926, with Tommy using Jessie Eden for information and being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1927.The fifth series begins two years later on 29 October 1929 (Black Tuesday) and ends on 7 December 1929, the morning after a rally led by British Union of Fascists leader Sir Oswald Mosley. The sixth series begins on 5 December 1933, as prohibition is repealed in the United States. The Nazi Party has also obtained power in Germany, leading to a growth in membership of the British Union of Fascists. Tommy must not only deal with Mosley but also with plots from the Irish Mob as well as the Anti-Treaty IRA. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Marissa chats with Caitlin Sangster, host of the Lit Service Podcast, about her new fantasy novel - SHE WHO RIDES THE STORM - as well as writing that complex, multi-POV fantasy heist novel, and why Caitlin starts with the characters and their motives; determining the "aboutness" of your story, and how to dig deeper into the heart of your book to uncover the themes you most want your readers to come away with; some things to keep in mind when switching from writing young adult to middle grade; how to use action and stakes to get your reader asking the right sorts of questions from the beginning, without the dreaded first-chapter info dump; and some tips for balancing homeschooling and family life with our personal creative pursuits (with as little parent guilt as possible!).Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at  https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

Season 2 opens with Shari Washington Rhone, who as a member of the original Los Angeles theatrical company of The Lion King where she worked as a “swing” and an understudy for the role of Sarabi. As energetic as she is talented, Shari is a dancer, choreographer, singer, and voice-over artist. In this engaging interview, she shares how she found her love for performing at a very early age. Coming to LA from what was the Indianapolis Dance Company (now the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre) Shari jumped right into classes with the revered Lula Washington before being invited to join her company. Shari now enjoys a story-telling style of dance with the JazzAntiqua Dance & Music Ensemble, where she has been for the last 10 years. She also enjoys getting to share her gifts with children through teaching with Dance & Dialogue as well as Jaxx Theatricals, showing them how important it is to use dance to express themselves and share their story. On top of dance and teaching, this amazing woman also performs with two bands, works as a voice-over artist, and just earned her second degree black belt in Hapkido. Steve talks with Shari about how, with the support of her husband, she is able to manage doing all of what she loves while also being a mother to two beautiful, creative children.
