Our Lady's Promise: I Remain With You This Homily weaves together . . . . . . the Visitation (Luke 1:39–45), the mystery of Advent, and the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, revealing a single, unifying truth: the Lord is always on the way to His people. God does not arrive once and withdraw; He continually comes, drawing near in mercy, joy, and life. This dynamic is first revealed when Mary, bearing Christ within her, hastens to Elizabeth. Though unseen, Christ Himself arrives, and His presence awakens joy, life, and praise. The leap of John the Baptist becomes the first fruit of salvation's nearness. He Continually Comes That same pattern unfolds across history, most vividly at Tepeyac in 1531, where Our Lady visits a wounded people and a struggling Church. Through Juan Diego, Mary brings Christ's joy into barrenness, transforming despair into life. The miracles . . . healing, roses blooming from stone, and the enduring image on the tilma . . . unfold in sequence, culminating in a sign that abides, just as Mary remained with Elizabeth and Christ remains with His Church. Throughout, Mary is revealed as the one through whom Christ comes, not only once, but always . . . into hearts, cultures, and history itself. Where He arrives, life stirs, joy breaks forth, and meaning is restored. Listen more to Our Lady's Promise: I Remain With You ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Quote from the Homily Imagine a greeting so powerful that its words don't matter. . . The voice of the woman with the joy of salvation growing in her womb speaks in such a tonality that that joy penetrates the life of another. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Art Work The Virgin of Mercy or Madonna della Misericordia.: Italian Painter: Piero della Francesca: 1462 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Why was this image selected: Mary stands sheltering the faithful beneath her mantle, a powerful visual expression of abiding presence. Like the tilma that endures and Mary's three-month stay with Elizabeth, the painting reflects the promise: I am not going anywhere.

Friends of the Rosary,Today, December 12, is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego, a Chichimeca Indian, encountered a beautiful young woman speaking in the native Nahuatl, who revealed herself as “Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live.”She requested that a chapel be built. After the local bishop refused to believe Juan, the Virgin herself arranged roses in Juan's rough cloak, on his tilma. When Juan opened his cloak before the bishop, a miraculous image appeared. After Mary appeared at Tepeyac (in Mexico City today), humanity witnessed the most significant conversion movement. Within seven years, practically the entire Mexican people, nine million native people, converted to Christianity. With this miraculous national conversion, the Aztec practice of human sacrifice came to an end, and the God of the eternal truth, nonviolence, and forgiving love defeated the fallen spirits in an astounding culture-changing victory. Our Lady of Guadalupe proved a more effective evangelist than Peter, Paul, Patrick, and Francis Xavier combined. We join the same fight when we honor Our Lady today.Today, the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the “Marian heart of America,” as Pope John Paul II called it, is one of the most significant pilgrimage centers in the world. The shrine conserves the cactus-fiber cloth of Juan Diego, which should have lasted 15 to 20 years. Today, nearly 500 years later, it shows no signs of deteriorating. In Our Lady's eyes, there is an image depicting the very moment Juan Diego revealed his tilma to Bishop Juan de Zumárraga. The encounter preserved in the eyes of Our Lady of Guadalupe now serves as a sign for others. The veneration of the Beautiful Guadalupana continues to inspire millions around the world, bringing ageless joy.Ave MariaCome, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! In this episode of Logos Podcast, Fr. Max and Fr. Joseph dive deep into Rocco Buttiglione's chapter on Modernity's Alternative and explore how Our Lady of Guadalupe reveals the ultimate Christian claim: being is good.We trace the drama of Mesoamerican religion, human sacrifice, the collapse of a symbolic world after the Spanish conquest, and why evangelization initially failed — until a pregnant woman appeared on Tepeyac. This conversation unpacks:• Why the Noahic covenant matters more than we think• How pagan religions hold both seeds of the Word and seeds of the devil• Why suffering challenges our belief in the goodness of being• How the tilma of Guadalupe spoke directly into a culture that had lost the will to live• Christianity's astonishing claim: God Himself becomes the sacrificed Son• What this means for hope, pro-life culture, and the dignity of the human person todayIf you're hungry for philosophy, theology, cosmology, evangelization, or deeper Marian devotion, this episode is for you.Support the show

Hace casi 500 años, según el Nican Mopohua, la Virgen de Guadalupe se apareció en el Cerro del Tepeyac. Cada año, la visitan 20 millones de mexicanos. Nos preguntamos si México es una nación guadalupana.
The lectionary readings for the Memorial of St. Juan Diego Cauhtlatoatzin help to show us why he was chosen by our Lord to receive such a gift from Our Lady. St. Paul begins the First Letter to the Corinthians: “Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong…” Juan Diego was not expecting anything special to happen to him as he was walking from his home to the Franciscan mission station for religious instruction. As his route passed by the hill at Tepeyac in the Sierra de Guadalupe Mountain Range, he encountered the Virgin Mary, who revealed herself to him as the ever-virgin Mother of God. He was instructed to request from the bishop that a chapel be erected in her honor so that she might relieve the distress of those who call upon her in their need. The bishop, as might be expected, did not initially go along with the plan. Bishop Juan Zumarraga asked Juan Diego to come back another day so the bishop would have time to reflect upon the request. Returning home, Juan encountered the Virgin again and announced the failure of his mission. Juan suggested the Blessed Mother ask someone of more importance to speak to the bishop, but she insisted that it was he, Juan Diego, that she wanted for the task. Juan returned to the bishop the next day, which was Sunday, December 10th, 1531. The bishop then asked Juan for some proof that this apparition was truly from heaven. Juan returned immediately to the hill at Tepeyac, and the Virgin met him again. She told Juan to return to the bishop and she would provide the proof needed. Overnight, however, Juan Diego's uncle's health had deteriorated to the point where Juan felt he had to get a priest to administer the sacraments. It was two days later that the Virgin met him on the road and gently admonished him for not trusting in her intercession. She instructed Juan to climb to the top of the mountain and bring her back some of the flowers that were growing there. He found the flowers, even though they were not in season and were not expected to be found on the rocky outpost where normally cactus and shrub only grew. He gathered them into his mantle and brought them back to Our Lady. She arranged the flowers and Juan set off to find the bishop. When he was allowed into the bishop's presence, he opened the mantle of his cloak and when the flowers dropped out, what remained was an impression of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Lady of Guadalupe. In the words of the Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Our Lady “is the friend who is ever concerned that wine not be lacking in our lives. She is the woman whose heart was pierced by a sword and who understands our pain. As mother of all, she is a sign of hope for peoples suffering the birth pangs of justice…As a true mother, she walks at our side, she shares our struggles and she constantly surrounds us with God's love.” The words of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego after he missed their meeting due to his uncle's illness could be addressed to everyone privileged to know her : “My youngest son, what is the matter? Do not let it disturb your heart. Am I not here, I who have the honor to be your mother?” Advent Blessings,Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R.

Friends of the Rosary: The Aztecs had dark beliefs in their pagan religious center of Tenochtitlan. They offered human blood to their divinity by killing people. They thought that sacrifices were necessary to keep the sun moving across the sky and preserve their lives, otherwise, the world would end. We despise these barbaric beliefs today. However, many dominant ideologies in our secular society are also very destructive. They may not kill the body, but they are intended to kill the soul, which is much worse, as Christ Jesus revealed. The Spanish conquistadors arrived and established Christianity in the old Mexico. Over two decades, the Franciscan missionaries in charge had little success in converting the indigenous people. Many Aztecs didn't trust the Spaniards and did not want anything from them. The situation was only getting worse. Supernatural intervention was needed. The Holy Trinity sent the Blessed Virgin. She appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin as a mestiza woman — a mix of indigenous and European descent. The Heavens chose as their messenger a macehual Indian, that is, of a lower social class, only above the slaves. Seven years before the apparition of the Virgin Mary, he received the sacrament of baptism, and along with his wife, the sacrament of marriage. His wife, María Lucía, passed away in 1529, prompting Juan Diego to turn his life to God by attending Mass and catechism lessons at a Franciscan church in Tlatelolco. He lived with his uncle Juan Bernardino, an elderly man. On December 9, 1531, as Juan Diego was on his way from his home in Tulpetlac to the Franciscan missionary's church in Tlatelolco, the unexpected happened. Mary appeared to him, speaking in the native language of Náhualt. Juan Diego's gravely ill uncle, Juan Bernardino, would be cured; a shrine would be built on the same spot at Tepeyac, and nine million Mexicans would convert to the true faith. The course of history was changed forever. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for Us! Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady. Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared. Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan's uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma. On December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop's presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Reflection Mary's appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary—and the God who sent her—accept all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for the indigenous population. While a number of them had converted before this incident, they now came in droves. According to a contemporary chronicler, nine million Indians became Catholic in a very short time. In these days when we hear so much about God's preferential option for the poor, Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God's love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself. Guardemos en nuestro corazón las palabras de María de Guadalupe a Juan Diego. “¿No estoy aquí, que soy tu madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra y amparo? Es nada lo que te aflige. ¿No estás en el hueco de mis manos y en el cruce de mis brazos?” En el cerro del Tepeyac, María no pide nada, tan solo ofrece su consuelo para remediar nuestra innegable pequeñez y vulnerabilidad.
Full Text of ReadingsSaturday of the First Week of Advent Lectionary: 180The Saint of the day is Saint Juan DiegoSaint Juan Diego’s Story Thousands of people gathered in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe July 31, 2002, for the canonization of Juan Diego, to whom the Blessed Mother appeared in the 16th century. Pope John Paul II celebrated the ceremony at which the poor Indian peasant became the Church's first saint indigenous to the Americas. The Holy Father called the new saint “a simple, humble Indian” who accepted Christianity without giving up his identity as an Indian. “In praising the Indian Juan Diego, I want to express to all of you the closeness of the Church and the pope, embracing you with love and encouraging you to overcome with hope the difficult times you are going through,” John Paul said. Among the thousands present for the event were members of Mexico's 64 indigenous groups. First called Cuauhtlatohuac (“The eagle who speaks”), Juan Diego's name is forever linked with Our Lady of Guadalupe because it was to him that she first appeared at Tepeyac hill on December 9, 1531. The most famous part of his story is told in connection with the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. After the roses gathered in his tilma were transformed into the miraculous image of Our Lady, however, little more is said about Juan Diego. In time he lived near the shrine constructed at Tepeyac, revered as a holy, unselfish, and compassionate catechist, who taught by word and especially by example. During his 1990 pastoral visit to Mexico, Pope John Paul II confirmed the long-standing liturgical cult in honor of Juan Diego, beatifying him. Twelve years later the same pope proclaimed him a saint. Reflection God counted on Juan Diego to play a humble, yet huge role in bringing the Good News to the peoples of Mexico. Overcoming his own fear and the doubts of Bishop Juan de Zumarraga, Juan Diego cooperated with God's grace in showing his people that the Good News of Jesus is for everyone. Pope John Paul II used the occasion of Juan Diego’s beatification to urge Mexican lay people to assume their responsibilities for passing on the Good News and witnessing to it. The lectionary readings for the Optional Memorial of St. Juan Diego Cauhtlatoatzin show why he was chosen by our Lord to receive such a gift from Our Lady. St. Paul begins the First Letter to the Corinthians: “Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong…” Juan Diego was not expecting anything special to happen to him as he was walking from his home to the Franciscan mission station for religious instruction. As mother of all, she is a sign of hope for peoples suffering the birth pangs of justice…As a true mother, she walks at our side, she shares our struggles and she constantly surrounds us with God's love.”The words of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego after he missed their meeting due to his uncle's illness could be addressed to everyone privileged to know her : “My youngest son, what is the matter? Do not let it disturb your heart. Am I not here, I who have the honor to be your mother?” Advent Blessings,Fr. Kevin MacDonald, C.Ss.R.
