In This Episode … Teaching is often viewed strictly as a content profession, but it is equally an emotional profession. Teachers can experience a range of emotions within their school day, including inferiority, defensiveness, reactions to student behaviors, fulfillment, enjoyment, internal rewards, and confidence. Additionally, teachers can walk into their work day carrying stress or worry, but needing to put on a brave face for the sake of a controlled teaching day. Teachers may be positioned to be in charge, but they are not in control. Our students' behavior communicates something to us. We can implement strategies--student awareness, intrapersonal awareness, language choice--that will help us "lower the volume" on taking unfavorable situations personally. The need for teachers to know themselves well on a deeper level, so they can be resilient in the classroom and maintain teaching with joy and confidence. Amanda Pickard has been a primary school teacher in Scotland for about 15 years with experience of teaching children from 3-11 years old. She is currently on a secondment with her local authority as the Digital Development Officer, working with schools, teachers, and pupils to increase digital literacy and computing science skills. She is passionate about leveraging digital technologies to support, engage, challenge, and inspire. Her recent classroom experience has been with little learners, primary 1 in Scotland, who are around 5 years old. She has taught digital skills to this age group for a number of years and has seen first-hand the positive impact that this has on their confidence, independence, creativity, and communication. Teaching keyboard skills is absolutely crucial to opening up opportunities for using dictate to 'write' a descriptive story and for immersive readers to listen to their own stories. She's a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEExpert), MIE Master Trainer, and one of the MIE Fellows for Scotland. She believes play and games are the best ways children (and her) learn and loves using Making Thinking Visible thinking routines to help give learners a voice. A favorite digital tool of hers is ThingLink which allowed her wee class of little learners to become independent in their learning during the lockdown. Outside of teaching, She's a power-lifting, crocheting, pet-owning, lifelong learner who loves to read. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wondernamya/message

Created in Finland in 2010, ThingLink is a cross-platform software that allows users to create and edit 360° images, video, interactive images, and virtual reality content. While this software can be used by anyone, its primary application is in the classroom, allowing students to create their own xR experience in education. Thinglink’s employees coach educators and students through a step-by-step process on how to edit and eventually create their own content. This highly personalized style of learning allows for self-driven engagement with learning materials. We spoke with Susan Oxnevad of Thinglink to learn more about how this xR platform is allowing students to learn through creation.

Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "Global Google Mapping" presented by Kathy Beck, March 19, 2016. We are in for a real treat with the presentation by Kathy Beck this week! She has some awesome advice and resources to share with us about Global Google Mapping. This is Kathy's description for her presentation: Global Google Mapping – can you say it 3 times fast? You have made a global connection and now you want to share your world with them, and see views of their location as well. However – your field trip budget doesn’t afford your students to travel to and SEE the locations where you have made those global connections. Let me show you some fabulous ways to utilize Google Tools to create “visual visits” as well as sharing about your own location. You will learn how to easily use some Google tools, as well as web tools like Heganoo, Thinglink, Skype, Newseum, World Explorer and apps such as Newsy, Stuck on Earth, Globe for iPad and cross-platform tools such as Flat Stanley and Duolingo. Resources and links provided. http://bit.ly/GlobalGoogleMapping Kathy Beck is an Instructional Technology Coordinator in a large school district in North Carolina. She has a BS in Elementary Education and Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and a MA in Educational Media and Instructional Technology from Appalachian State University. She has taught at the elementary level, in the classroom and computer lab and now serves 7 schools, training educators and working with both teachers and students collaboratively on projects integrating technology. She is passionate about the integration of technology and is a frequent enthusiastic presenter of technology tools and activities at local, state, national and virtual conferences. https://twitter.com/pinktechgirl
