We have so much good for you even before 2024 closes, and especially as 2025 kicks off. We'll be bringing you lots of new books, especially in the new year, but as we close 2024 and look ahead to what next year will bring, I'm also going to bring in some conversations about books from years past that will make you think about the type of person you want to be going forward into this next chapter. That includes today's conversation with Amy Morin about her 2018 book 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do: Own Your Power, Channel Your Confidence, and Find Your Authentic Voice for a Life of Meaning and Joy. In addition to this book, Amy has written a number of books about things mentally strong populations don't do — people, couples, kids, parents. We are zooming in on women today, but I think anyone will be able to take something from this conversation. Today we talk through each of the 13, spotlighting some of my favorites; I ask Amy, if she could revise this book — which came out six years ago this month — what she'd add or take away; and we talk about three components of mental strength. We also talk about what mental strength brings to a life, and I'm really excited for you to hear what she has to say. Amy is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, college psychology instructor, keynote speaker, author, and expert on mental strength. Her books have sold over 1 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages, and, in addition to being an accomplished writer, she's also an award-winning podcast host, hosting “Mentally Stronger with Therapist Amy Morin.” She is also the former editor-in-chief of Verywell Mind and has been featured everywhere from Today, Good Morning America, Time, Fast Company, Success, CNN, CNBC, and more. Amy's TEDx talk “The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong” is one of the most popular talks of all time with more than 22 million views, and Amy's quest to find mental strength is hard won: she lost her mother at 23, and her husband died when she was 26. As she puts it, “Losing the two most important people in my life sent me on a quest to learn as much as I could about how to be mentally strong.” In 2013, during one of the lowest moments in her life, she wrote a letter to herself about what mentally strong people don't do, and 13 things emerged that could rob her of her mental strength if she let them. She figured her letter could maybe help someone else, so she published it online, thinking maybe a few people could benefit from it. It went viral, and more than 50 million people read it. From there came her book deal, and the rest is history. We are all better for her message. 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do: Own Your Power, Channel Your Confidence, and Find Your Authentic Voice for a Life of Meaning and Joy by Amy Morin

Even though grief is part of the human condition and we will all experience it eventually, there are a lot of misunderstandings surrounding it. For example, how long should we grieve? Is there a “right” way to grieve? Does the length of time you are grieving show how much you loved the person you lost? Join us as today's guest, host of the “Mentally Stronger” podcast, Amy Morin, LCSW, answers these questions and more. Amy also shares her personal experiences of grief and some strategies for handling crying in public. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the episode page. “And then we have this other stuff about the stages of grief which most people have heard. So then it kind of leads people to believe that you go through these nice, neat stages and then you can be like, hey, I'm in stage three. This must be almost over, or we don't really know how long it's supposed to last. Companies give you like three days of bereavement time. So then we think, oh, at the end of the fourth day I'm going to start to feel better. But there's so many factors that go into this, and it's not nice and neat, and it's a lot messier than the definition would lead us to believe.” ~Amy Morin, LCSW Our guest, Amy Morin, is a psychotherapist, mental strength trainer, and the award-winning host of the “Mentally Stronger with Therapist Amy Morin” podcast. Finding out more about Amy Morin (00:28:27) Amy discusses her series of books, including "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do" and "13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do", and shares where listeners can find out more about her. Key Takeaways: Amy's personal journey taught her not only how to get through tough times but also how to enjoy the good times in life. She observed that some people remain stuck in a painful place even years after a difficult experience, while others manage to keep getting back up and maintain a positive attitude. This led her to study people's behaviours and learn about the difference between those who heal and grow from painful experiences and those who don't. Even when we feel powerless, there is always something we can do to improve our circumstances or how we feel about them. The language we use can have a profound impact on our mindset and well-being. Changing phrases like "I have to" into "I choose to" can make a world of difference. It's about taking ownership of our decisions and feeling empowered. Quotes: "What can I do about it? What do I have control over? As long as we empower ourselves to know there's always something we can do, it really empowers us to say, 'Alright, let's do something about this issue that I'm facing.'" - Amy Morin “You can train your brain to do things differently over time if you consistently do something. So if every time you feel afraid, you say ‘I'm just going to go sit at home and not leave the house', you've trained your brain to warn you of any kind of danger so that you immediately go home. On the other hand, if you recognise that ‘All right, I'm feeling kind of scared, but I'm going to face this fear', over time you can train your brain to say ‘yeah, when we feel fear, we take action. We don't just go home and do nothing'.” - Amy Morin “I think we get almost like the biggest dopamine, adrenaline hit when we step into something that we've been telling ourselves for decades we could never do. I definitely think that's where a lot of our personal growth suddenly comes to the fore and you're like, ‘What was all that about? Because that felt easy and it actually felt kind of fun'.” - Jessica Fearnley Useful Links Amy: Amy's Website - AmyMorinLCSW.com Follow Amy on Instagram - @AmyMorinAuthor Podcast - Mentally Stronger With Therapist Amy Morin All of Amy's books can be found at AmyMorinLCSW.com/books Jessica: The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Business – Free Download Get in touch with Jessica to discuss your consulting business Jessica's LinkedIn Submit your questions for this season's Q&A episode Guest Bio Amy Morin is a psychotherapist, mental strength trainer and the award-winning host of the Mentally Stronger With Therapist Amy Morin podcast. When I was drinking I was the furthest thing from mentally strong and resilient. I went through most days feeling like I could barely cope with life. Between the 3 AM wakeups, hangovers, promising myself that I would not drink and then buying a bottle of wine during the witching hour, I felt defeated, tired, defensive and overwhelmed on a daily basis. The work of shifting away from that negative mindset to become mentally strong in sobriety is key to helping you create a life you love without alcohol. In order to help you do that I asked Amy Morin, therapist and bestselling author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do and 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do, to share her research and work on how to become mentally strong in sobriety. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Say you want to improve your physical strength. You know there are things TO do: move your body, sleep, eat more whole foods, etc... I'll bet you also know there are things NOT to do: skip workouts, eat plenty of sugar and white flour, spend a lot of time on the couch with your hand in a bag of chips? Same goes for mental strength. Amy Morin is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and psychology lecturer at Northeastern University. She’s an international bestselling author of three books that have been translated into 35 languages. And...this week she's on the Love Your Life Show explaining how she came to write her first book: 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do. She went on to write two more books: 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do and 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do (Yes, all books have a different 13 things). I've devoured all 3 books and am beyond thrilled to bring this amazing resource of a human being on the show for all of you to hear. Listen in as we discuss which of the 13 things I think you find the most challenging and that I find to be most challenging to NOT do; as a person, a parent, and a woman. I've been a long time fan of Amy's and am honored she took time to speak with me so I could share her message out to all of you. In this episode we give you tools and guidance on how to have the mental strength that sets us up to live a life we LOVE! For this episode it's my pleasure to have a very wise woman back on the show. Amy Morin is a psychotherapist, social worker, therapeutic foster parent and the world's leading voice on the topic of mental strength. She's the author of the international bestselling book 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do, which was born from her own remarkable personal story of mental strength, as well as a viral article by that name that has since gone on to be read 50 million times. We had Amy on the show back on episode 166 when her follow up book 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do, which was the most popular episode of 2018. Amy has expanded on her very tangible advice about mental strength in the third installment of her books on the topic, 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don't Do. While there's advice in the book that applies to everyone, woman, man or child, we dive into some of the female- specific experiences that can hold us back, and the reasons why it's particularly important to have a discussion about women's mental strength in the era of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. These are great qualities to develop in ourselves and model for our children. Show notes Love our work? Please check out our Patreon Campaign!
