093 - Martin Simpson In this episode, host James Patrick Regan speaks with Martin Simpson, discussing his new duet record with Thomm Jutz, “Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry,” which includes songs gathered by the two women in Appalachia during World War I. They also discuss his time on NPR's “Prairie Home Companion,” as well as his favorite tunings, his guitar collection (which includes a Harmony Sovereign and several boutique instruments), and a certain old Martin archtop. My guest this week is Ted Olson.Ted is Professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He's also written liner notes and essays for some wonderful projects, including “Doc Watson – Life's Work: A Retrospective,” and the fantastic “Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs Of Jane Gentry and Mary Sands” by Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz.Ted joins me to talk about three wonderful projects he worked on for Bear Family Records, celebrating three key recording sessions that took place in East Tennessee in the 1920s and '30s - The Bristol Sessions, The Johnson City Sessions and The Knoxville Sessions.Bear Family put out a multi-CD box set for each of these, which Ted did extensive research and provided some wonderful essays and liner notes for. Each set is also distilled into a single CD release. We talk about why The 1927 Bristol Sessions, which brought The Carter Family and Jimmie Rogers to the attention of the world, came to be known as the 'big bang' of Country music, why that label doesn't sit quite right with Ted, how the sessions came about, what was happening in the world of commercial recording at the time and why the legacy of those recordings is so important, plus much, much more.It was a fascinating conversation and put those recordings in a whole new context for me, both helping me understand their importance, but also (thanks in part to the wonderful transfers and re-mastering, as well as the incredible liner notes) helping me realise there's just some great music in there too! You'll find the single CDs here:Bear Family CDsBristol SessionsJohnson City SessionsKnoxville Sessionsand the box sets here:Bear Family box setsBristol SessionsJohnson City SessionsKnoxville SessionsHappy picking!Matt Support the show===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

Down the Road on the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina
Madison County is home to a centuries old ballad singing tradition which has attracted interest for over a century. In 1916, Englishman, Cecil Sharp traveled to Western North Carolina to hear the old ballads that were no longer being freely sung in England. A new album revives this Transatlantic connection. We sat down with Thomm Jutz, singer-songwriter and co-producer of Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry, to learn more about the album and the ballad singing tradition.

My guests this week are Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz, who join me to talk about their wonderful new record 'Nothing But Green Willow : The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry.' The album brings together a selection of British folk songs collected in Appalachia in the early 20th century by Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles. Alongside Martin and Thomm it features a range of incredible artists from both sides of the pond, including Sierra Hull and Justin Moses, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, Dale Ann Bradley and Tim Stafford. We talk about how the songs made their way to Appalachia, how (and why) Cecil and Maud travelled to the region to collect them and why this record is so important to both Martin and Thomm. It was a truly fascinating conversation and it's a superb record. I'd really urge you to check out the physical copies of this one as the packaging is amazing and features some really informative and fascinating liner notes. Grammy-nominated guitarist, producer, and songwriter Thomm Jutz discusses his upcoming project with award-winning English guitarist Martin Simpson. The album, Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry, is comprised of ballads from English folklorist Cecil Sharp's 1916-1918 collection, English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, particularly those tunes from singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. On this album, Simpson and Jutz brought together a mix of roots artists from both sides of the pond—Sierra Hull, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, and more—to create an homage to the bridge from Appalachia to England and back, just as the songs of Sands and Gentry originally did. The album is available September 29th on Topic Records. I first became aware of Songwriter Terry Klein in 2018 when Radio Promoter Adam Dawson of Broken Jukebox Music sent me Terry's sophomore effort, “Tex”. I saw that Walt Wilkins produced the album and that's really all I needed to know to be intrigued enough to give it a full and complete listen. He has garnered high praise from two of my musical heroes, Mary Gauthier and Rodney Crowell as well as press and radio outlets across the United States and Europe. For his third album, Terry went to Nashville and worked with producer, multi-instrumentalist and award winning songwriter in his own right, Thomm Jutz. Good Luck, Take Care is described as a raw, visceral departure from the work he's done before. Ten dynamic songs that take hold from the first measure, knock you off balance, and won't let go without a fight. Adam contacted me in early 2022 to see if I might be of assistance in getting Terry a Kansas City gig because the postponement of Folk Alliance International's Music Conference here until May 2022 was going to leave a big whole in his touring schedule to promote “Good Luck, Take Care.” Terry was able to find a Kansas City gig and I was only too happy to have him on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show the day before he was to appear in our town. Enjoy this on air conversation where we extoll the virtues of leading a lyrical life from Boston to Austin, collaborating with some of the best producers and songwriters in Americana/Roots Music and the importance of investing in your craft through co-writes and workshops.
From Mother Maybelle Carter and Charlie Poole to modern day country and bluegrass artists Tammy Rogers and Thomm Jutz, the circle has been made complete with their collaboration Surely Will Be Singing. Host Joe Kendrick talks with them in a wide ranging conversation that includes live music they performed on public radio WNCW.
Episode 199: Guitarist and songwriter Luther Dickinson, founder of the North Mississippi All-Stars, returns to the String to talk about two albums, each with its own story to tell about blues and roots music. Up And Rolling from 2019 was a deluxe CD package with extensive memoir liner notes by Luther and photographs of he and his brother Cody in 1996 just before the band formed. It's a celebration of the hill country blues tradition they inherited. Now they're out with Set Sail, a pandemic-created album with more orchestration and complexity than anything they've done, plus the contributions of singer Lamar Williams Jr. Also, an excerpt from my recent visit with bluegrass songwriting stars turned recording duo Tammy Rogers and Thomm Jutz.

Episode 127: Paul Burch moved from Indiana to Nashville in 1994 when his friend Jay McDowell (BR549) told him about the burgeoning indie country music scene on sleepy Lower Broadway. Here we talk about his role in the fascinating band Lambchop, the evolution of his band the WPA Ball Club and his new album Light Sensitive. Also in the hour, German-born bluegrass songwriting star Thomm Jutz.

The plan was to spend an hour with David Rawlings, an artist who's releasing brilliant folk albums, touring to huge acclaim and driving a new string band agenda. The plan was to ask him about his emergence in recent years as a leader and artist of note after so many years of playing the not silent but often unbilled partner of Gillian Welch. Then, in a happy turn of events, Gillian Welch came along. And the conversation became an exploration of a legendary partnership that changed the course of roots music. Also, a visit to the studio of quietly influential producer, songwriter and guitarist Thomm Jutz. He left his native Germany focused on making something happen in bluegrass and country music in Nashville. He certainly has, most recently his solo debut album.
This week on MCR, two wildly different takes on bluegrass from two sides of the world. The show opens with The Blue Side of Lonesome, a quintet from Japan that's become a shining example of that country's love affair with sound birthed by Bill Monroe. They're really good. And we close with a long running group from Muscle Shoals that's made its name and living giving the bluegrass treatment to favorite rock and roll songs and albums. Iron Horse. Also on the bill, Charley Crockett brings us a magnificent hybrid of classic honky tonk and swamp pop from Texas. While guest host Peter Cooper's latest musical excursion is a trio with Eric Brace and Thomm Jutz, featuring great songs and sweet harmony.
This season closing show brought together all the vibes and individual craft that makes Music City Roots go, with a new folk discovery, a heartfelt bluegrass tribute and two true icons of American roots music. We start with the moody beauty of Bay Area folk group Quiles & Cloud. An all-star gathering of Nashville pickers pay tribute to Mac Wiseman, including Sierra Hull, Shawn Camp, Justin Moses, Thomm Jutz and Peter Cooper. Next, Danny Barnes performs solo on the banjo, showing what a unique genius he is. And the show wraps with the fire and thunder of Texas master Delbert McClinton.
Thomm Jutz is back, this time to discuss various aspects of the recording process. Tones, mixing, pre-planning and gear are discussed. They discuss some records they think are recorded well. Thomm shares his process for putting together his new record "Crazy If You Let It", which will come out later this year on Mountain Fever Records.

Red Beets Records artists (and Grammy nominees) Eric Brace & Peter Cooper, accompanied by Thomm Jutz, put on WTJU's August 29, 2014 Lambeth Live Concert. Lambeth Live is produced by Peter Jones, and this program was engineered by Morgan McLeod with assistance from Lewis Reining and Drew Simmons.
Thomm talks about growing up in a village in the Black Forest of Germany, being inspired to start playing guitar after seeing Bobby Bare on TV, hanging out on a Canadian military base in Germany, playing with an Elvis impersonator,… Continue Reading →
