This week, we're discussing the 25th anniversary of Lauryn Hill's solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This classic album was released on August 25, 1998, and features a number of standout tracks like "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor," "Lost Ones," "To Zion" and more. She won five Grammy's for this album, making her the first woman to win five or more in one night, including the Grammy for Album of the Year. This was also the first hip hop album to win Album of the Year. Vor 25 Jahren erschien Lauryn Hills Album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". Bis heute ist es das einzige Album der Sängerin, für das sie allerdings fünf Grammys bekommen hat. Lauryn Hill gilt als die Queen of Hip-Hop, die das Genre in ein ganz neues Licht gerückt hat. Von Anfang an war es ihr Ziel, mit bestehenden Konventionen zu brechen und die Stereotype abzulösen, die im Hip-Hop, Rap und ganz besonders im Gangsta-Rap vorkommen. Wer an das Genre Gangsta-Rap denkt, dem kommen schnell mit Schimpfwörtern vollgepackte Songs über Geld und Sex in den Sinn. Lauryn Hill setzt dem in "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" aber etwas Zartes und Sanftes entgegen. Ihre Texte sind poetisch und fast schon philosophisch. Sie handeln von Liebe, Gefühlen, Religion und gesellschaftlichen sowie politischen Themen. In jedem ihrer Songs vermittelt sie das Gefühl, dass sie sich ihren ganzen Schmerz von der Seele geschrieben hat. Familie oder Karriere? Angefangen hat Hills Karriere in der Hip-Hop-Band "Fugees". Ende der 1990er Jahre hat sie die Gruppe wegen der Geburt ihres Sohnes verlassen. Damals hatte man sie davor gewarnt, ihr Kind der Karriere vorzuziehen. Ihr wurde das Ende ihrer Karriere prophezeit und deshalb hat man ihr sogar dazu geraten, das Kind abzutreiben. Die Sängerin hat sich aber dagegen entschieden. Im Jahr 1997 kam dann ihr erster Sohn Zion zur Welt. Ihm widmete sie mit "To Zion" auch einen Song auf ihrem Album. Mittlerweile hat sie sechs Kinder. Ihre Musik steht für Hoffnung auf Gleichberechtigung Das Lied "Everything is Everything" und der Titelsong "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" beinhalten gesellschaftliche und politische Themen, besonders in Bezug auf die Situation schwarzer Jugendlicher in den USA. "Everything is Everything" handelt von Jugendkriminalität auf den Straßen, von Verlust und Hoffnungslosigkeit. Die Botschaft des Liedes soll den Jugendlichen Mut machen und ihnen Hoffnung geben, dass sich für sie etwas ändern wird. Das Titellied "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" ist eine Anlehnung an ein Buch des afroamerikanischen Historikers Dr. Carter G. Woodson. After surviving cancer and a stroke, listener Briony Maclean got in touch to talk about how she became a model, gaining a new lease of life and a confidence boost. Wynne Evans' childhood was the focus of the film Save the Cinema, starring Tom Felton. He's a professional opera singer with over 25 years' experience but it was an advert that turned out to be life-changing. Back in December 2014, comedian Cait Harris and performance artist Ivan Cheng recorded their works for the x-mas show on Eastside Radio 89.7fm. Cait Harris is a Sydney based performer and writer of plays, films and short stories. Her stories can be found in the ebook The Sturgeon General Recommends Cait Harris with Momentum Publishing and she can be seen performing on ABC 2’s new series Storyclub in January 2015. Every so often Cait can also be seen performing at the comedy venue Giant Dwarf on Cleveland Street, Redfern. In the comedy skit recorded for our show, Cait plays a radio presenter who after numerous unsuccessful relationships falls in love with a cockatoo. Ivan Cheng is an Australian artist whose practice focuses on the damage in interpreting notation. As well as collaborative projects, he has shown conceptual performance work in Europe, North America, and Australia. Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he is developing scores which relate to formalism and history across cultural form, interested in the temporal act of reading and sight-reading. For our show, Ivan performs the text titled Duksy River, Disky River, Dusky Rivet. The text-score is followed by an experimental version of Silent Night composed by Ivan in collaboration with Polish-American sound artist Derek Piotr as the first track of a hypothetical Christmas album. The actor Laurence Fox is best known for playing DI James Hathaway in the ITV crime drama Lewis. He's now on the London stage playing a giant of history Charles de Gaulle in 'The Patriotic Traitor'. He is part of Britain's most famous acting dynasty that includes his father James, uncle Edward and cousin Emilia. He is now carving out a career in music and has just released his debut album. He joins Saturday Live to talk about his new role, his passion for music, and his love for the countryside. The zoologist Lucy Cooke grew up in the English countryside and was fascinated with nature from an early age. Her new TV series shows the length that people go to save orphaned animals. She joins Saturday Live to talk about her own passion for animals, in particular the weird and unloved ones. Listener Lorna Currie Thomopoulos is a collector of paper dolls. She describes her collection as historical, beautiful and cherished fragile object d'arts. Giles Abbott has just returned from a storytelling festival in India.
