Starting March 31, the Town Green lawn will close until May 9 to allow new grass to take root, reopening for the summer concert series on May 10. Parking deck repairs are also underway, with sections temporarily closed on a rolling basis until July. The deck will remain open, with directional signs ensuring safety and minimizing disruption. City officials appreciate residents' patience as they work to maintain the center's long-term functionality. STORY 5: Fox Theatre Offers High School Students A Chance To Learn About Working In The Performing Arts The Fox Theatre’s Fox Gives program is accepting applications for its 2025-2026 All-Access Pass, an immersive initiative for high school students interested in performing arts careers. Open to Georgia public and Title I schools within 50 miles of the Fox, the program offers hands-on learning, mentorship, live performance access, and career workshops. Schools with active arts programs can apply by May 9, with up to 30 students from three schools selected. Additionally, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a standout student in the current program to support their arts education. Visit the Fox Theatre website for details. Break 3: MONSTER JAM STORY 6: Police: GSMST Student allegedly recorded girls in school bathroom at least 13 times A former Gwinnett School of Math Science and Technology student, Hongming Mo, 17, faces felony charges for allegedly recording female classmates in the bathroom at least 13 times since last October. Mo was arrested on Feb. 25 after being caught recording a student in a girls' restroom. GSMST Principal Logan Malm confirmed Mo is no longer a student at the school, and swift disciplinary and legal actions were taken. Released on a $5,000 bond, Mo is barred from returning to GSMST. The incident was reported by another student, highlighting the school’s “See Something, Say Something” safety culture. STORY 7: Lawrenceville annexation bill headed to governor's desk Lawrenceville is one step away from a May 2026 referendum on annexing 5.3 square miles, potentially adding 19,000 residents and becoming Gwinnett County's largest city. The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 739, awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. If approved, the annexation would balance the city's tax base, reducing tax-exempt properties from 40% to 21%. Residents in the annexed areas would see no net change in millage rates but would shift to city services. The expansion, effective January 2027, would require $9 million annually for additional services, offset by matching revenue. GDP Script/ Top Stories for June 28th Publish Date:  June 28th            From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Friday, June 28th and Happy 49th Birthday to actor Toby Maguire. ***06.28.24 – BIRTHDAY – TOBEY MACGUIRE*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Gwinnett police: People in moving van were not trafficking victims Ousted Gwinnett School Board Member Criticizes Runoff System Biden, Trump swap barbs in no-holds barred debate All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Gwinnett police: People in moving van were not trafficking victims A viral video on social media this week showed people inside a Budget Rental moving van, sparking concerns of human trafficking as the original poster claimed they were tied up. The incident occurred on Interstate 85 north from midtown Atlanta until Gwinnett police intervened. However, Gwinnett County Police Sergeant Collin Flynn clarified that the individuals were not trafficking victims but were two families relocating with their belongings. They were healthy and not in distress, heading from Alabama to Maryland for new job opportunities. Despite no evidence of trafficking, police cited the driver for Georgia's seat belt law violation as the occupants were riding in the van without seat belts. The group was safely dropped off to find an alternate means to continue their journey to Maryland. STORY 2: Ousted Gwinnett School Board Member Criticizes Runoff System Karen Watkins, Vice Chairman of the Gwinnett County school board, has decided not to seek a recount after narrowly losing to Rachel Stone in last week's runoff election. Stone won by 17 votes, securing less than a 0.5% margin over Watkins. Although Watkins could have requested a recount under state law, she opted not to, criticizing Georgia's runoff election system instead. Watkins highlighted concerns that requiring candidates to surpass 50% of the vote in a runoff can suppress voter turnout and dilute the impact of voters. In the primary election, Watkins led with 41.8% of the vote, leading to the runoff with Stone who garnered 30.6%. The runoff saw significantly lower turnout compared to the primary, with only 3,719 votes cast. Watkins' campaign labeled the runoff system as voter suppression, emphasizing its costliness and potential to diminish voter participation. STORY 3: Biden, Trump swap barbs in no-holds barred debate In Atlanta, a 90-minute presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, moderated by CNN with no live audience, aimed for civility with microphones turned off when not speaking. Despite this, both candidates traded accusations, blaming each other for inflation and trading personal attacks. Trump faced legal challenges, including indictments in Georgia and a recent New York conviction. He attributed these to Biden targeting him politically. Biden criticized Trump's inaction during the Capitol riot and highlighted Trump's legal troubles and personal scandals. Both called for the other's imprisonment, Trump for legal issues and Biden for immigration policies.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back.   Break 2: TOM WAGES   STORY 4: Lawrenceville names new dog park for former Police K-9 Lawrenceville has dedicated HYRO Park in memory of K9 Officer Hyro, who served the police department from 2016 until his passing in July 2023. The 0.41-acre urban dog park, set to open on August 9, honors Hyro's service in law enforcement, where he contributed to 233 missions, resulting in 87 arrests and the seizure of significant quantities of drugs. The park, under construction next to Lawrenceville Lawn, aims to unite the community through dog-friendly activities. City officials, including Hyro's handler Officer Sean O'Brien, unveiled a plaque during the dedication ceremony, emphasizing Hyro's legacy of "Love Loyalty Obedience." Whether we can see it or not, the impacts of Monsanto— the agrochemical giant best known for creating the herbicide Roundup and the genetically engineered seeds that resist it— are everywhere. Monsanto has shaped and reshaped the farms that provide food to people worldwide; and while we might not be able to see the breadth of the company's impacts, we're most certainly eating them. In Seed Money, Bartow J. Elmore investigated how the future of food remains tethered to Monsanto, despite a toxic and troubling past that extends far beyond Roundup. Through extensive fieldwork, previously-unseen records, and countless interviews with farmers, lawyers, chemists, and past employees, he traced Monsanto's rise and eventual domination of an agricultural empire. While it's easy to imagine a cadre of evil corporate villains at the helm, plotting the demise of the world, Elmore found something more subtle. His research revealed a cautionary tale of what happens when a series of seemingly small decisions have a cascading effect on an entire global system. Bartow J. Elmore teaches environmental and business history at The Ohio State University. For this project he received the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award and a New America fellowship. He lives with his family in Columbus, Ohio. But much of what gives the city its inviting nature didn’t exist a few decades ago. With a downtown already partially remade, the city is preparing to expand along the “other side of the tracks” while creating an inclusive environment for its residents new to Duluth and to the U.S.Much like Gwinnett County itself, Duluth was once a predominately white town. But beginning in the 1990s, population booms brought new residents from every corner of the globe. Crosby started the company 21 years ago after graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a degree in interior design. The company now has two studios, a residential design studio in Roswell, and a commercial design studio in Midtown. When not spending time running her company and working with its several prestigious clients, Crosby spends time with her three children and husband on their home on Lake Lanier. Crosby Design Group is unique in the world of interior design because it captures a broad range of services with two completely different business models and clientele. With experience in both residential and commercial design, Crosby Design Group is the one-stop-shop for all types of clients. On the residential side, Crosby Design Group focuses on builder developments, working to create exterior streetscapes, interior finishes and high-end custom homes. On the commercial side, the design group works with 55+ communities, student housing, multi-family developments, corporate design, retail, hospitality and more. To finish off 2020, Crosby Design Group completed work on The Ivy at Ariston. This residential apartment community in Buford near the Mall of Georgia offers spacious layouts and wonderful amenities. The interior layout offers a thoughtful design reminiscent of the incredible location right on the Ivy Creek Greenway. Another recently finished project includes the highly-anticipated Seven88 West Midtown high rise condo development. With inspiration drawn from a Manhattan modern design palette, the Seven88 sales center offers high-performance materials, clean lines and a unique blend of textures and colors. With industrial and modern finishes, the interior design work incorporates mixed materials, including iron, glass brick and concrete to create a sophisticated and clean look. Today's first headlines: Rome musician Lee Shealy joins legendary Atlanta Rhythm Section. ‘We all get along great. It’s just neat to listen to all their stories from years together.’ Business: As first half of 2020 ends, some big minuses but also hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment across Northwest Georgia despite the pandemic. State-record 2,226 new COVID-19 cases since Saturday; Georgia sees 11,282 additional positive tests in 7 days, a 17.1% surge. Reports: Woman dead, man shot Sunday evening near Crump Road in Cartersville. Business: Second downtown Rome studio on the way as Playa Azul Media moves in above Jamwich. Rant of the Day: A different way to celebrate the red, white and blue. So how do we celebrate Independence Day this year? The spirit certainly is willing but the options for what helps make it all magical -- the time spent with family, friends and neighbors, from parades to fireworks to picnics and trips to the lakes and rivers -- are limited. Ridge Ferry Park will not be the base for the community celebration we're used to although Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation and sponsor Redmond Regional Medical Center promise to light up the sky for a good 20 minutes that night. (One of the best seats in the past? Atop the parking deck by Town Green). The day-long celebration in Cartersville is on hold this year as is Calhoun's star-spangled extravaganza. The Rockwell-like community parade in Cave Spring is a go, with social distancing precautions and all, but will people turn out to march or watch? And will the homemade ice cream be served? A three-hour event is planned in downtown Rome -- including prayer, songs and a citizens parade -- but who will show up, especially in 90-plus degree heat and a thunderstorm threat? Will everyone be wearing masks? Will we social distance? And, if not, will we pay a price with more positive test results in mid-July? On the day we celebrate our freedom, we're likewise supposed to be observing vital health restrictions to limit the spread of coronavirus. Perhaps America in 2020 has to learn about new types of sacrifice. But that doesn't mean we can't come up with new ways to celebrate as well. After all, look what a Cave Spring parent did to both educate and entertain her young sons 35 years ago. Today, it is perhaps the most nostalgic thing we do in Northwest Georgia. It doesn't matter how you celebrate; just remember what we're celebrating. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support
