A major scandal is shaking up the FIA, and this could change Formula 1 forever. Climb the ladder with me on Patreon: https://patreon.com/lawvsMotorsport UK boss David Richards just launched an unprecedented legal challenge against FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, accusing him of undermining transparency and fairness in governance. This conflict erupted after Richards refused to sign a controversial confidentiality agreement, which he calls a restrictive "gagging order." With accusations of excessive fines, misuse of power, and suppression of criticism through the infamous "Appendix B," tensions have never been higher within Formula 1's governing body. What's truly shocking is Richards himself can't even challenge for the presidency due to a rule change introduced by Ben Sulayem, making his stand especially bold. Now, legal battles are underway not just in the UK but also in France, home of the FIA. Could this controversy trigger an unprecedented early election, reshaping the future of motorsport governance? Rumours are rife that South Africa's iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit could be gearing up to host Formula 1 racing again. (Kyalami hosted its first race in 1961 before it fell off the Formula 1 calendar in 1993, and Africa has not been a host to another race since then. South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, met with Formula 1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, as well as FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September 2024. In late October, McKenzie took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce that "F1 is coming home soon". Bringing the beloved sport back to African soil would be no small feat. The event would require considerable effort and co-ordination. So, what will be required to reach FIA Grade 1 accreditation? We have WRC, Formula E and single seater updates this week! But of course, we start with Formula 1 news, where FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced that he will not get as involved in Formula 1. The announcement comes after the FIA President caused more controversy over his sexism comments. Max Verstappen will appear in the upcoming Netflix series, Drive To Survive. The Formula 1 World Champion has stated that he has given Netflix a 30 minute interview on last season. In Women's Motorsport, British driver, Katherine Legge has been announced to be driving at the Indy 500 this year. At the Formula E in India, a new motorsport Championship has been launched for 2024, named ACE Championship. We had a really good rally in the WRC in Sweden, where we had snow and ice. Ott Tänak won the rally in his M-Sport Ford, taking the lead in the final stage from Craig Breen, a now Hyundai driver that used to drive for the Ford team. Formula E were racing in Hyderabad in India. After blocking his fellow drivers, DS Penske's Jean-Eric Vergne brought home the win, beating Envision Racing driver Nick Cassidy in 2nd, and TAG Heuer Porsche's Antonio Felix da Costa who was given 3rd place, following a penalty to Sebastian Buemi. In UK Motorsport, there's a proposal to penalise drivers by 1 second instantly if they put a half a tyre off the track. This would be a UK law for all motorsport taking place in the UK. Furthermore, drivers are not allowed to protest the decision. The Formula Four and Formula Regional Middle East were in Dubai this weekend, with Ferrari academy driver, Tuukka Taponen, appearing to be a shining light in this series. In Formula Regional Middle East, Mercedes academy driver, Andrea Kimi Antonelli took his win and look to be the favourite to win the season. In New Zealand, we had the Formula Regional Oceana, where Austrian driver, Charlie Wurz took the Championship win. Coming up next week, we have the Daytona 500, the Formula Four and Formula Regional have their finales in Abu Dhabi.

James M is joined by Sam and James P to cover and discuss the ongoing story: The row over Andretti's F1 entry continues to rumble on. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has now thrown his support behind the bid in a public intervention.  Andretti's bid to enter F1 has been met with pessimism by the teams for the last two seasons. Owner Michael Andretti has taken a new approach to turn the tide of opinion. After the FIA announced it would investigate new teams to join F1, Andretti announced its intentions to tie up with General Motors and Cadillac to enhance its chances. No public concerns were raised by F1 at the announcement, however, President Ben Sulayems's recent tweet condemning supposed negative reaction indicates F1 is still wary of Andretti's entry. The FIA President has become the most vocal support for Andretti as it chases a place on the grid. Speaking during a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Autosport quotes the FIA president as stating that new team entries form part of the “sustainability of the sport”. He added that up to 12 teams can be on the grid in the future: “Today there are two sides of sustainability. There is sustainability of the environment, and there is sustainability of the sport. If you want to sustain the sport, you have to open it to the rest of the manufacturers. And to us, we are allowed to have 12 teams on the grid”. Showing further support, Ben Sulayem highlighted General Motors's position as an engine manufacturer, stating “we should be encouraging them to come to Formula 1”. He added that he “needs a reason why” the sport would not welcome Andretti or General Motors. SMART MOTORWAYS HALTED BY GOVERNMENTThe roll out of new smart motorways will be halted for five years, as the Government wants to use that time to collate more data on the safety of the existing sections. FUEL DUTY LOSS ESTIMATED AT £5 BILLION THANKS TO EVSThe RAC Foundation has estimated that the Government could lose £5 billion in revenue from fuel duty, with the rise in EV adoption, by 2030. Welcome to Episode 41 of the Lovecars On The Grid podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman are here with another episode, with a motorsport roundup of events from the past week! It's been Christmas week, so very quiet from a motorsport front, but still lots to talk about from the FIA with Formula 1 and other sports, too. The FIA seems to be going through an interesting period, after Frenchman, Jean Todt moved on from being in charge of the FIA for 12 years, bringing in Mohammed Ben Sulayem as the new FIA President. Then of course we had the controversy between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the last race of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Furthermore, both Ross Braun and Pat Symonds are leaving Formula 1, who were two figures behind the new, 2022 car. In addition to this, Belgian FIA Rally Director, Yves Matton also quits! What also doesn't help, is that a petition has been launched on Twitter to get Michael Masi out of the FIA, following his decisions at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Should he stay? What do you think? To make matters even worse, Nicolas Latifi, who was the driver that crashed, causing the safety car at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, has been receiving death threats for what happened to Lewis Hamilton following the incident! Of course, Latifi didn't intend to crash! Paul then gives us some stats on Formula 1 for our Christmas Quiz! Comparing Max Verstappen beating Lewis Hamilton to Fernando Alonso beating Michael Schumacher in 2005. Did you also know that Nikita Mazepin received 234 blue flags in the 2021 season! World Rally Championship is back on 23rd January, with French Rally driver Sebastian Loeb driving for Ford in the new Puma rally cars. The cars this season will be hybrid for the first time, too, which will make for an interesting season for WRC with 100HP boosts from the hybrid system. In the British Touring Cars Championship, NAPA Auto Parts are using BTCC as a launch platform for their business in the UK market, which will give BTCC a real boost, allowing drivers to be paid to be full time BTCC drivers, as opposed to drivers using their own sponsors. As January approaches, we of course look forward to the Dakar rally, that starts on 1st January. With nearly 500 different vehicles taking part, from buggies, motorbikes, trucks and cars, with just 1000 people taking part and just 10 British people taking part! That's it for our podcasts for this year! Thank you to everyone who has supported us and may we wish you a very Happy New Year!
