Take a look at Conducttr's services and its crisis exercise software at: https://www.conducttr.comThis is a conversation with Kateryna Bondar, a Ukrainian expert on emerging military technology, a former advisor of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and a Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. When people talk about the role of technology in the war in Ukraine, it usually doesn't feel like that much new development is happening - after all, we have been seeing drones in the war for over 3 years. But the reality is actually the opposite - the war in Ukraine is quickly becoming a lot more futuristic than I personally realized and technology that's already being deployed and tested on the battlefield every day, is something that most people would have probably thought is many years away. Whether that's major attacks carried out only by unmanned vehicles, fully autonomous drones or the Ukrainian ambition of fully replacing human soldiers with robots - those are things that sound unreal but already happening. War is literally changing in front of our eyes and the change is getting faster. This conversation, will hopefully make it seem a bit more real and show what the already futuristic present and very near future looks like.

32 foreign ministers of NATO member countries held a meeting in Brussels. Among other events, a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council took place there, in which the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, took part. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg opened the meeting at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, who stated that NATO allies continue to consistently support Ukraine, and the difficult situation on the battlefield is a reason to increase such support, not to decrease its volume. - 32 міністри закордонних справ країн-членів НАТО провели зустріч у Брюсселі. The news cycle has been dominated by coverage of the sudden collapse of FTX, one of the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchanges, the arrest of its 30 year old founder Sam Bankman Fried and his unexplainable release on a 250 million dollar bond. The crash of FTX has shaken the crypto market, lost institutional investors billions – and individual customers millions – led to official investigations of FTX in several countries, and made some question whether the Bitcoin sphere might crash and burn outright, and perhaps cause wider problems for the financial system. Some take the view that FTX was a fraud all along, ever since its launch in April 2019. If that's the case, it has grave implications for the US Democratic Party and Ukrainian government, as the company's corrupt activity may have been used to fund both, openly and secretly. Where's the money, Zelensky? On March 14, FTX launched a new online portal for cryptocurrency donations, Aid for Ukraine, in partnership with Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation. Through this, crypto traders, both large and small, could donate bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which FTX would convert into cash for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to spend on weapons and other war-related expenses. Very rapidly, the fund claimed to have amassed “over” $60 million in donations. By April 14, it was reported that just over $45.15 million of that sum had been splurged on digital rifle scopes, thermal imagers, monoculars, rations, armor, helmets, military clothing, tactical backpacks, fuel, communication devices, laptops, drones, medical supplies, and a “worldwide anti-war media campaign.” This episode is also available as a blog post: http://freedomreportage.com/2022/12/25/is-there-a-link-between-sam-bankman-fried-ftx-aid-to-ukraine-and-the-democratic-party/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/world-voices/support
US Clinicians extend delivery of care by monitoring prosthetic function via the OneStep app on soldiers' phones when they are back on the front lines in the Ukraine Protez Foundation. The non- profit helping Ukrainian children, soldiers and civilians who have lost their limbs during the war to get free quality prosthetics in the US, today announced they have partnered with OneStep. An innovative platform for digital physical therapy using pioneering science that turns any smartphone into a clinical-grade motion analysis lab, to provide remote care for their prosthetic patients. Prosthetic Patients to receive care From 5,000 Miles Away Protez Foundation is committed to helping rehabilitate and promote the opportunity for a normal life to Ukrainian soldiers, civilians and children, who have suffered limb loss during the war – its goal is to raise money to support prosthetic treatment and rehabilitation. The average cost of treating one patient is $15,000, and the average time spent in the US for each patient is 3-4 weeks. Before the end of the year, Protez Foundation will have helped over 30 Ukrainians in need of a prosthetic. “For months, we have been doing prosthetic operations, fittings and treatment plans and then sending patients home with no way to track their progress to determine if and how their treatment plans should be adjusted,” said Yakov Gradinar, certified prosthetist and orthotist and chief medical director, Protez Foundation. “The partnership with OneStep is a game changer – it rounds out our efforts, enabling us to easily stay connected with our patients and get a 360- degree view of their movement from thousands of miles away.” With OneStep's app, when a person takes a walk with their smartphone in their pocket, even a 30-second walk (no wearables or equipment needed), the app collects a set of gait measurements. This allows for consistent remote monitoring in a patient's natural environment and the ability to track multiple changes in motion over time. OneStep is enabling Protez Foundation to extend therapy and care outside of the clinic – with no boundaries, so they can reach patients wherever they are. OneStep's gait analysis is the first to capture gait in a natural setting, and its ease of use contributes to making the OneStep gait database the largest and most comprehensive in the world. “The development and increased accessibility of digital health technology is empowering clinicians to provide personalized care like never before,” said Tomer Shussman, co-founder and CEO, OneStep. “With the talented team at the Protez Foundation, we are changing the way prosthetic care is being delivered, helping patients gain confidence and assurance, and ensuring care continuity all the way to the front lines. We are so proud to be able to bring our technology forward to support this worthwhile effort.” As of November 2022, Protez Foundation has received 600+ applications; however, the real need is much larger. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy, there are about 12,000 amputees currently registered and awaiting prosthetics. Therefore, Protez Foundation is working towards the goal to bring between 10-30 people a month for prosthetics. To learn more or to donate to Prosthetics for Ukrainians, please visit: About Protez Foundation Protez Foundation was formed in May 2022 by Yura Aroshidze and prosthetist Dr. Yakov Gradinar, as local community volunteers in Minnesota answered the call to help support Ukraine in its fight for freedom against the Russian invasion. The Protez Foundation is committed to helping rehabilitate and give a chance for a normal life to the brave Ukrainian defenders, civilians and children who have suffered limb loss during the war. About OneStep OneStep enables people to move in a healthier way through our innovative, easy-to-use platform for remote digital physical therapy. One is from Bio-Europe, a chat with Transgene chief business officer, Steven Bloom, and we also have conversations with Humacyte CEO Laura Niklason, and with Anthony McDonnell, Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for Global Development, on the subject of antimicrobial resistance. We also have our weekly commentary from Travis McCready at JLL.HumacyteThe ongoing war in Ukraine continues to present significant challenges for frontline hospitals in treating the injured. As part of the humanitarian aid effort, U.S. biotech, Humacyte, has worked with the FDA and the Ukrainian Ministry of Health to send 30 investigational bioengineered blood vessels to help repair tissue injuries from bomb and gunshot wounds. Humacyte's human acellular vessels, or HAVs, are off-the-shelf replacement vessels that help the body heal itself. They are currently being evaluated in multiple advanced-stage clinical trials in vascular trauma repair, arteriovenous access for hemodialysis and peripheral arterial disease and so far, have been implanted in more than 500 patients to date. The HAV is made by seeding vascular cells from a qualified cell bank onto a biocompatible, biodegradable polymer mesh in a bioreactor bag. Over weeks, the cells grow and create new tissue, forming a tube-shaped vessel structure while the polymer mesh degrades. The resulting bioengineered vessel is then decellularized to create the HAV: an extracellular matrix that retains the biomechanical properties of the vessel but is cleansed of cellular components that could induce an immune response. The HAV in the bioreactor bag can then be shipped, stored, and is immediately available when needed. Reaction to European Union action on antimicrobial resistanceFourteen Member States wrote to the European Commission recently outlining why they think the EU's proposed policies around antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are costly, inefficient, and will disrupt the market for generic drugs.Anthony McDonnell, senior policy analyst at the Center for Global Development, looked in detail at the EU's proposals, why member states are revolting against it, and which policies the EU should actually implement to successfully combat AMR.He said that, for months it has been speculated that the EU may move toward transferable exclusivity vouchers (TEVs). The14 countries have made three counter proposals for how new antimicrobials can be encouraged. TransgeneTransgene is a biotechnology company focused on designing and developing targeted immunotherapies for the treatment of cancer. Oleksiy Martsenyuk is the Executive Director of the Center for Defence Strategies in Kiyv, an organisation that helps to monitor defence reforms and develop key government policies that will affect the country's security and defence sector. This certainly needs a little more explanation from you, Oleksiy! And we will get into that in the course of the podcast. Also, he served as a Civilian Deputy Minister in the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence for just under a year. Originally, Oleksiy has a business background though. And because of this, Oleksiy's and my relationship actually goes way back. When I studied photography in Gent, Belgium, at the end of my first year all students had to choose a topic and project outside the curriculum, entirely self-sufficient and motivated by our own interests. This is now almost 18 years ago. As a foreigner myself, I chose the topic of migration and opted to take black and white portraits of people far away from home in Belgium. I put it all in book form, presenting them on a double page with their portrait in black and white on one page and the most cherished and valuable photo they brought with them in colour on the other. Oleksiy was introduced to me by my dear friend Apoorva, studying with him at the time. A big shoutout and a big hug to you, Apu, who I don't see or hear nearly often enough! I remember the portrait of Oleksiy still so well after all these years. Standing in his rather modest and empty student cave, but with a big, bright Ukrainian flag on his wall. Leaning in, curiously observing me with a gentle smile while I was trying to create something lasting with the little that I knew at the time. But, in a way, I have; by having him with me today - 18 years after that photo was taken. I am so happy and grateful to have you with us today, Oleksiy, after all this time!SHOW NOTESNew York Times, The Bodies Lay Dead in the StreetBBC News, Bucha KillingsVOX News, Ukraine KidnappingsDeutsche Welle, Russia Uses Kidnappings to Intimidate UkrainiansGolda MeirWeimar RepublicFriedrich EbertPhilipp ScheidemannThe Ebert-Groener PactSinking of the MoskwaBayraktar DroneHIMARSNord Stream 2Rheinmetall builds military training centerThe Orphanage, Serhiy ZhadanKamil Galeev (@kamilkazani), Twitter ThreadMUSICLove In The Face Of Fear, Jim KroftYellow Van Stories is a Mind The Bump ProduSupport the show

What A Week (5/24)Intro: (Cue intro music) Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week! I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News: https://katu.com/news/local/permits-for-western-columbia-river-gorge-national-scenic-area-may-24-september-5-multnomah-falls-oregon-timed-use-pass-waterfallsThe summer permit system will be in effect starting this week for visits to the western Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. From May 24th through September 5th, timed-use permits will be required for cars in the quote, "Waterfall Corridor" between Vista House and Ainsworth State Park. The western Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area includes access to picnic areas, scenic viewpoints, trails, and many waterfalls, including the iconic Multnomah Falls viewpoint. Permits will also be required for the Multnomah Falls exit along I-84 (Exit 31) In-state news: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/house-primary-win-oregon-latina-andrea-salinas-make-history-november-rcna29464Oregon state Rep. Andrea Salinas won a crowded Democratic congressional primary last week,, overcoming a better-financed opponent who was backed by the House leadership's campaign arm. If Salinas wins the election in November, she'll be the first Latina elected to Congress from Oregon. Her win would be a boost for Latino Democrats who had publicly clashed with the Democratic leadership's House Majority PAC over its endorsement in the race of political newcomer Carrick Flynn. Salinas said in a statement last Tuesday night quote, "I am ready to win this seat in November and work hard to expand access to abortion care, tackle the climate crisis, and lower the cost of prescription drugs," end quote. NBC News has declared Salinas the winner in the race. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus' political action committee, Bold PAC, threw its backing and $1 million in ad support behind Salinas, while the House Majority PAC's put $1 million behind Flynn. In National News: https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2022-05-20/pentagon-denies-ukrainian-claims-of-plan-to-destroy-russias-black-sea-fleet Last Friday, the Pentagon denied that it is forging plans to destroy one of Russia's most consequential navy fleets, despite assertions to that effect from the Ukrainian government, but officials did leave open the possibility of new weapons shipments that would dramatically change the scope of naval warfare in the region. Anton Herashchenko, an official adviser to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, tweeted last Thursday, quote “The US is preparing a plan to destroy the Black Sea Fleet,” end quote, according to a translation, in an attempt to force access to strategic ports that Russia has blockaded. Control of the seas off Ukraine's coast has become among the most high-profile issues facing Western officials supporting the government in Kyiv against the Russian invaders. Despite some successes in recent weeks – notably the sinking of the Russian flagship Mosvka – warships loyal to Moscow have succeeded in exerting pressure on Ukraine. In International News: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61505842 Last week it was reported that the country of Sri Lanka has defaulted on its debt for the first time in its history as the country struggles with its worst financial crisis in more than 70 years. A 30-day grace period to come up with $78m (£63m) of unpaid debt interest payments expired last Wednesday. The governor of the South Asian nation's central bank said the country was now in a quote "pre-emptive default". Last Thursday, two of the world's biggest credit rating agencies also said Sri Lanka had defaulted. Defaults happen when governments are unable to meet some or all of their debt payments to creditors. It can damage a country's reputation with investors, making it harder for it to borrow the money it needs on international markets, which can further harm confidence in its currency and economy. Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week: https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/22/world/rhino-population-population-growth-scn-trnd/index.htmlNepal's population of one-horned rhinos has increased to its highest number in more than 20 years, partly owing to a pause in tourism due to the Covid-19 pandemic that allowed the animals' habitats to regenerate, conservationists said. The population of rhinos across four national parks in Nepal increased to 752 in the latest count, up by more than 100 from 645 animals in 2015, according to an information officer at Nepal's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC). Since 2000, no previous survey of rhino populations by the Nepali government has found more than 650 of the animals. Closing: Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense granted special permission for the male musicians to leave the country, calculating that the world will be more motivated to protect Ukraine if it sees its culture as something precious and worth saving.
As the Russian military shifts its campaign to focus on the east and south of Ukraine, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak has called on the US and its allies to deliver heavier weaponry to the ex-Soviet nation."After the rapid retreat of the Russians from Kyiv and Chernihiv, it is clear that Russia has prioritized another tactic -- to move east/south, to control large occupied territories (not only in Donetsk and Luhansk regions) and to gain a strong foothold there," Podolyak said on Saturday."They have established in the east and south and are dictating harsh conditions," added Podolyak. "So we definitely can't do without heavy weapons if we want to unblock the east and Kherson and send [back] the Russians as far as possible."Last month the Russian military said the "first stage" of its invasion of Ukraine was complete and that it would withdraw forces from around Kyiv and Chernihiv to concentrate on the Donbas region in the country's east.Russia's announcement of that new phase in part may provide political cover for the Russian military, explaining heavy setbacks in the battles around Kyiv, but Ukrainian officials have also reported a ramping up of military activity and shelling in the Donbas by Russian forces.Podolyak alluded to an expectation from US and Western officials that Ukraine might need to prepare for further partisan warfare -- and referred to the Kremlin's bloody nine-year campaign to support the Marxist government in Kabul."Our partners must finally understand that the 'Afghanization' they want and the long-lasting exhausting conflict for Russia will not happen," he said. The war, which began when Soviet forces invaded in 1979, claimed nearly a million Afghan lives and 15,000 Russian troops, with a further 50,000 wounded."'Afghanization' is when there is a strong guerrilla resistance across the country that inflicts heavy losses on the aggressor for many months or even years and thus significantly weakens the power of the occupier's army," explained Podolyak."Such actions took place during the Soviet Union's attempt to control Afghanistan: Afghan guerrillas destroyed and weakened the Soviet occupiers for years. As a result, weakened Russia as a whole.""Russia will leave all Ukrainian territories except the south and east. And will try to dig in there, put in air defense and sharply reduce the loss of its equipment and personnel," Podolyak added. The US is expected to help facilitate the transfer of Soviet-era tanks to Ukraine, a source familiar with the plan told CNN on Saturday. Officials have declined to say how many tanks will ultimately go to Ukraine. They will be Soviet-era T-72 tanks, which Ukrainian military personnel have experience operating, a senior US official told CNN.Those tanks will be delivered "within days, not weeks," the official said, from NATO partner countries. The New York Times first reported on the transfer. The Ukrainian presidential adviser's comments came hours after the Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin, said that if Britain delivers long-range artillery weapons and anti-ship systems to Ukraine, they would be "legitimate targets" for Russia."Any weapon deliveries are destabilizing, especially the ones mentioned by (Ben) Wallace (the British Defense Secretary)," said Kelin, according to Russian state news agency TASS. "They exacerbate the situation and make it bloodier.""Apparently, these are new, rather high-precision weapons. Of course, they will be legitimate targets for our armed forces if they cross the border of Ukraine.""I have a feeling that London's idea of what is happening in Ukraine militarily is formed on the basis of the bravado reports of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and the Ukrainian leadership," Kelin said.Russian officials have long complained about deliveries of advanced military weapons to Ukraine by the US, the UK, and other NATO allies, who have provided anti-tank weapons and man-portable air defense...
