Send us a Text Message.Cascadia was born of fire and ice. A string of 19 volcanic peaks stretch from Canada to California. Sulfur, lava, ocean mist, evergreens, and fog commingle to create one of world's most haunting, mysterious realms. Venture with me into the Cascade Mountain range. Find ALL Cascadia episodes on your regular Curious Cat stream.Episode Intro:In the wee hours one summer morning while driving home from a concert held at the Gorge, an outdoor venue near the banks of the Columbia River Gorge, I was helping my friend, who was driving us back to Seattle, stay awake. I took my duty seriously and as the landscape passed out the windshield, I noticed a car's occupants as we passed them. The occupants all wore white sheets, not even their eyes or mouth exposed. To say it was odd is quite the understatement. It was downright chilling. As I told my friend about what I'd seen, we looked out at the road ahead with even more vigilant eyes and witnessed a bright object vault across the starry sky. And then I turned around to track the van with the strange occupants and it was gone. I'd forgotten about the incident, marked it down to both of us being exhausted. And we never spoke of it again. But as I prepped our episode today, the memory moved to the front of my brain files. It's all the more reason we need to take a good long look at the enigmatic Columbia Gorge.Let's get into it.Show Sources and MaterialsCCC News article titled, Is the Columbia River Gorge a Supernatural Hotbed? The Strange Disappearance of Alissa McCrann of Multnomah Falls (she still has not been found. Well friends, we've come to the end of another chapter in our Soundwalk journeys. For our final installment in the series on Mount Hood—Oregon's tallest stratovolcano (at 11,249')—we are taking in Larch Mountain. While technically just outside the confines of the Mount Hood National Forest, Larch Mountain offers a gorgeous view of Wy'east, the Native American name for Mount Hood.Right? Oh man, what a beauty! It was an interesting confluence of events that drew me out to Larch Mountain on Oct 31, 2023. It was the last day to drive the road up there before it closed for the season. Also, I was peripherally aware that Grey-crowned Rosy Finches were spotted in the area; a rarity for the county. Mind you, I never heard of Grey-crowned Rosy Finches until a couple days prior, and I'm not usually a rare bird chaser, but the time and space opened up so I drove up there. It was a beautiful partly-cloudy day. There were patches of snow on the ground; a crunch crunch under foot. So quiet!Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Red-breasted Nuthatches meandered through the canopy. Chipmunks chattered. Red Crossbills called out in flight. I did see the Grey-crowned Rosy Finches far below me from Sherrard Point (where I took that photo of Mount Hood) but they never got close enough for a decent photo.Larch Mountain was developed as a tourist attraction / forest service lookout in 1915 when the first tower and hiking trail were constructed. It was a hard-earned view. The 13.3 mile trail (out and back) climbed 4000 feet up from the iconic Multnomah Falls to the summit of Larch Mountain. At that time most visitors would have arrived by train to Multnomah Falls. The Historic Columbia River Highway opened to automobiles in the early 1920's. Today, while the one mile trail up to the top Multnomah Falls is bustling, the rest of the hike up, following Multnomah Creek for the most part, is serene in contrast. It was on the upper rim of this trail that I made this soundwalk. Like Timothy Lake Soundwalk, this is a very quiet soundscape. The same recommendation applies: For best results, listen with headphones, or in a quiet environment. Thanks for reading and listening. It brings me joy to share it with you!Larch Mountain Soundwalk is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) tomorrow, June 14th. This is a public episode. Carved by the once-wild Columbia River, the Columbia River Gorge is a dramatic canyon that snakes through the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest on its way to the Pacific Ocean. It's an area of stunning natural beauty with endless outdoor adventure options.   Using the town of Hood River, Oregon, as our home base, we recently visited the gorge in search of waterfalls. (The area has nearly 100.) And being that it was spring when we were there, the waterfalls did not disappoint -- especially the famous Multnomah Falls – the most-visited single natural attraction in the Pacific Northwest.   In this episode, we talk about several of the best waterfalls in the area, a couple of breathtaking trails to hike close to Hood River, a state park you won't want to miss, and some of the restaurants and breweries we visited. We also share a little history of the area.   A few links we mentioned in this episode: ·     KURU Footwear's website https://www.kurufootwear.com/ ·     A link to KURU's RIDGE Motion shoes ·     Link to our Patreon account   The best way to support our podcast is to become a member of our Patreon account. In September 1979, two hikers discovered human remains on a rocky slope above a little-used trail near Multnomah Falls. They found bones, a skull and a few personal belongings: gold-rimmed aviator glasses, a yellow cap with black felt letters reading “NT” and a chewed-up checkbook from First National Bank of Oregon. But there was no wallet or other identifying information. Based on the bones and hair found at the scene, investigators determined the body likely belonged to a man, between 20 and 35 years old, with a thick, curly beard. A news brief that ran in The Oregonian noted that the remains “had been exposed to the elements for quite some time.” Police sent the skull and mandible to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., for an anthropological exam, which concluded that the person who died was likely African American. But who did the remains belong to? Police had no leads. No one had been reported missing. For decades the bones sat in a box at the Oregon State Police medical examiner's office in Clackamas. Now, more than four decades after the remains were first discovered, John Doe 79-1862 has a name. On Episode 5 of The Unidentifieds, hosts Regan Mertz and Dave Killen travel to Multnomah Falls and explore its labyrinth-like trail network. “You really can't help but feel it when you put in a little effort to get a little higher, to get to another vantage point. It makes you feel a sense of being placed in this time and space in a different way. That's the sublime, a timeless element that is beyond what we can conceive. It's so important for the soul of humankind in the future of this landscape, and the future of humanity.”  – Nathan Dwyer, Main Street Tours (from the top of Crater Lake National Park) Join us on the Central Nature Trail for the third part of our documentary road trip, following award-winning travel writer Aaron Millar from the top of Crater Lake National Park to the Columbia River Gorge. We begin snowshoeing to the top of Watchman Peak, for the best view over Crater Lake in the park – “like a sapphire embedded in the Earth”, as Aaron describes it. It's exposed, it's hair-raising and it's worth every shaky step. After that we head to Bend, one of Oregon's premier adventure towns, for some sunset paddling along the Deschutes River surrounded by thousands of swallows, baby Ospreys and a surprise visit from Oregon's state animal. Then it's time to head underground for a spine-chilling 1000-foot descent into a lava tube, formed by a “River of Fire” over 7,000 years ago. We crawl through 18-inch-wide cracks, turn off our head lamps to experience true darkness and marvel at the geologic forces that could create this uniquely beautiful landscape. We finish at the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation for some “river therapy” and a fly-fishing lesson from a native guide. We learn of conserving native first foods, experience some river therapy and Aaron catches his first fish.Through it all, we're going to explore the wonder and awe of the natural world in all its forms, from mile-high views to quiet moments listening to birdsong on the river. We'll discover why the natural world for Oregonians inspires more than just gasps and awe, it inspires care and stewardship of the land. It inspires the sublime and we're going to find plenty of that.  What A Week   (5/24)Intro: (Cue intro music) Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week! I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News:  https://katu.com/news/local/permits-for-western-columbia-river-gorge-national-scenic-area-may-24-september-5-multnomah-falls-oregon-timed-use-pass-waterfallsThe summer permit system will be in effect starting this week for visits to the western Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. From May 24th through September 5th, timed-use permits will be required for cars in the quote, "Waterfall Corridor" between Vista House and Ainsworth State Park. The western Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area includes access to picnic areas, scenic viewpoints, trails, and many waterfalls, including the iconic Multnomah Falls viewpoint. Permits will also be required for the Multnomah Falls exit along I-84 (Exit 31) In-state news: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/house-primary-win-oregon-latina-andrea-salinas-make-history-november-rcna29464Oregon state Rep. Andrea Salinas won a crowded Democratic congressional primary last week,, overcoming a better-financed opponent who was backed by the House leadership's campaign arm. If Salinas wins the election in November, she'll be the first Latina elected to Congress from Oregon. Her win would be a boost for Latino Democrats who had publicly clashed with the Democratic leadership's House Majority PAC over its endorsement in the race of political newcomer Carrick Flynn. Salinas said in a statement last Tuesday night quote,  "I am ready to win this seat in November and work hard to expand access to abortion care, tackle the climate crisis, and lower the cost of prescription drugs," end quote. NBC News has declared Salinas the winner in the race. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus' political action committee, Bold PAC, threw its backing and $1 million in ad support behind Salinas, while the House Majority PAC's put $1 million behind Flynn. In National News: https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2022-05-20/pentagon-denies-ukrainian-claims-of-plan-to-destroy-russias-black-sea-fleet Last Friday, the Pentagon denied that it is forging plans to destroy one of Russia's most consequential navy fleets, despite assertions to that effect from the Ukrainian government, but officials did leave open the possibility of new weapons shipments that would dramatically change the scope of naval warfare in the region. Anton Herashchenko, an official adviser to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, tweeted last Thursday, quote “The US is preparing a plan to destroy the Black Sea Fleet,” end quote, according to a translation, in an attempt to force access to strategic ports that Russia has blockaded.  Control of the seas off Ukraine's coast has become among the most high-profile issues facing Western officials supporting the government in Kyiv against the Russian invaders. Despite some successes in recent weeks – notably the sinking of the Russian flagship Mosvka – warships loyal to Moscow have succeeded in exerting pressure on Ukraine.   In International News:  https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61505842 Last week it was reported that the country of Sri Lanka has defaulted on its debt for the first time in its history as the country struggles with its worst financial crisis in more than 70 years. A 30-day grace period to come up with $78m (£63m) of unpaid debt interest payments expired last Wednesday. The governor of the South Asian nation's central bank said the country was now in a quote "pre-emptive default". Last Thursday, two of the world's biggest credit rating agencies also said Sri Lanka had defaulted.  Defaults happen when governments are unable to meet some or all of their debt payments to creditors. It can damage a country's reputation with investors, making it harder for it to borrow the money it needs on international markets, which can further harm confidence in its currency and economy. Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week: https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/22/world/rhino-population-population-growth-scn-trnd/index.htmlNepal's population of one-horned rhinos has increased to its highest number in more than 20 years, partly owing to a pause in tourism due to the Covid-19 pandemic that allowed the animals' habitats to regenerate, conservationists said. The population of rhinos across four national parks in Nepal increased to 752 in the latest count, up by more than 100 from 645 animals in 2015, according to an information officer at Nepal's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC). Since 2000, no previous survey of rhino populations by the Nepali government has found more than 650 of the animals.   Closing:  Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.

When you think about high school football, the first city that comes to mind is probably not Portland, Oregon. Better known for its hipsters, coffee, beer and soccer, Portland is also home to one of the top programs in the Pacific Northwest. Defending 6A state champs, Central Catholic HS. For Coach Steve Pyne, he loves the place. Born and raised in the city he calls home, he and his wife might not be the biggest “Timbers” supporters (the local MLS side), but they frequent the local theater often. Not many high school football coaches probably watch plays, but the city of Roses is unique. We bonded over our shared experiences at the famous Multnomah Falls, which sits just 20 minutes outside of downtown. It was here that I proposed to my wife and here that Coach Pyne first told his wife he loved her. A romantic place to say the least. In our conversation we talk about success being a byproduct of good relationships. The turning point for Coach in understanding this was after some research. He visited top programs in the area (also, something Coach Matsumoto discusses in his chalk talk episode with us). The common thread he realized is that football comes secondary to life lessons. Their emphasis is on character development and values. It's not about wins. Try telling most uber-competitive coaches this and they might be hesitant to believe it. But it was truly the turning point. Three state championships are pretty good evidence too. Another important aspect of his program is the ownership that his players take. No better example of this than the team motto that was created by his leadership council. A white board session that coach facilitated with the group led to the creation of their “CRAFTED” acronym to guide their program. A lot of coaches want complete control of the mission, vision, and direction of their programs. But the humility and wisdom to empower his players to create something they could all believe in was more powerful than just telling them what he thought. They now owned the vision and fully bought into it. As Coach Pyne says, “This is not my team, this is your team.” That's how you give your players confidence. “Giving the power back to the kids, and being an advocate for themselves, we tell our kids all the time, force us to play you.” We close the time with coach's “Florida” version of the mesh concept. His clips include plays from their QB's 400 yard state championship game performance so enjoy. In this episode Raya, Treava Champagne and Lynn will discuss the book/movie The Shack.  (Please keep in mind that many details are discussed and therefore spoilers are inevitable) Publishers Summary: The novel is set in the American Northwest. The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, a father of five called "Mack" by his family and friends. Four years prior to the main events of the story, Mack takes three of his children on a camping trip to Wallowa Lake near Joseph, Oregon, stopping at Multnomah Falls on the way. Two of his children are playing in a canoe when it flips and almost drowns Mack's son. Mack is able to save his son by rushing to the water and freeing him from the canoe's webbing but unintentionally leaves his youngest daughter Missy alone at their campsite. After Mack returns, he sees that Missy is missing. The police are called, and the family discovers that Missy has been abducted and murdered by a serial killer known as the "Little Ladykiller". The police find an abandoned shack in the woods where Missy was taken. Her bloodied clothing is found, but her body is not located. Mack's life sinks into what he calls "The Great Sadness". As the novel begins, Mack receives a note in his mailbox from "Papa", saying that he would like to meet with Mack that coming weekend at the shack. Mack is puzzled by the note—he has had no relationship with his abusive father since he left home at age 13. He suspects that the note may be from God whom his wife Nan refers to as "Papa". Mack's family leaves to visit relatives and he goes alone to the shack, unsure of what he will see there. He arrives and initially finds nothing, but as he is leaving, the shack and its surroundings are supernaturally transformed into a lush and inviting scene. He enters the shack and encounters manifestations of the three persons of the Trinity. God the Father takes the form of an African American woman who calls herself Elousia and Papa; Jesus is a Middle Eastern carpenter; and the Holy Spirit physically manifests as an Asian woman named Sarayu. The bulk of the book narrates Mack's conversations with Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu as he comes to terms with Missy's death and his relationship with the three of them. Mack also has various experiences with each of them. Mack walks across a lake with Jesus, sees an image of his (Earthly) father in Heaven with Sarayu, and has a conversation with Sophia, the personification of God's wisdom. At the end of his visit, Mack goes on a hike with Papa, now appearing as an older Native American male, who shows him where Missy's body was left in a cave. After spending the weekend at the shack, Mack leaves and is so preoccupied with his thoughts that he is nearly killed in an automobile accident. After his recovery, he realizes that he did not in fact spend the weekend at the shack, but that his accident occurred on the same day that he arrived at the shack. He also leads the police to the cave that Papa revealed, and they find Missy's body still lying there.

This week we take a look at an African-American woman named Henrietta Lacks who died of cancer in 1951 at the age of 31. Unbeknownst to her or her family, her cancer cells were taken and discovered to be "immortal"- which led to breakthroughs in the study of polio, herpes, leukemia, influenza, hemophilia, Parkinson's disease, cancer, AIDS, cloning, and in vitro fertilization, and more. It's a fascinating look at where ethics meet science. Also: Boyd Coffee Company is sold, Multnomah Falls bridge back open, Disney's "stunt robots," crows reverse-engineer tools from memory, RIP Route 66?, and the FDA approves the first drug derived from marijuana. Enjoy, and happy 4th of July!

To the Falls Book one of the falls trilogy Heather Renee https://www.amazon.com/Falls-Trilogy-Book-ebook/dp/B06XX6FYB7/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1514851955&sr=1-1&keywords=to+the+falls 4.6 stars on 120 reviews Published April 29, 2017 Book 2 From The Falls, Published on August 4th and has 4.7 stars on 94 reviews Book 3 Embracing the Falls, Published on on December 29th, just a few days ago. It has a 4.9 star average on 56 reviews. This author has her street team in place to get that many reviews up so quickly. Good for her. She appears to be a self published author and making smart moves. She has published her entire trilogy in one year and all three books are in the top 55K for the paid kindle store. That means she is selling at least one of each book a day. That may not sound like a lot, but for an indie author, it's a good start. Heather Renee is an indie author that lives in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest in Oregon. She writes YA Fantasy that has a mixture of suspense, humor and a little romance. When Heather's not writing, she is spending time with her beautiful daughter and amazing husband. Two cats, and a dog who loves the snow, complete their household. On weekends if she doesn't have a book in her face, you can find Heather going on different adventures with her family. Her favorite being hiking to the top of Multnomah Falls.   Kaliah "Kali" Atwater is awaiting two things, finishing sophomore year in college and her upcoming twentieth birthday. The day before Kali’s birthday, she finds out that the dream she's had every night for almost a year of a beautiful land, isn't a fantasy at all. It's her birth place. Every twenty years a new generation of Guardians return to Arvata to bring life back to their world and renew the magic of the Falls. Now it’s Kali’s turn, but dark magic has made its way into her new home preventing the Falls from replenishing. Kali must accept the role assigned to her by the Fates or let Arvata crumble. Can she and her friends save Arvata in time? Will new love make her stronger? Or will the darkness finally win? Only the Fates know for sure... Things that pulled me out of the story. It was hard to read out loud. Some of the sentences seemed inside out to me. I had to record some of them four times to get them to flow right. I don't know if that is a local way of speaking where the author comes from, but, as many great authors do, she might want to read her writing out loud to see how it flows, or maybe have her editor do it. I wasn't sure out some of the tenses she used. She talked about how the dream had changed "this night" when I felt like she was relating something that had happened in the past. To me it should have been, "last night". No biggie, I know, but it pulled me out. Also, she talks about how she will have her last final that day, and later she said she didn't have a chance to eat between finals. Again, no big deal, but it pulled me out to wonder how that worked. She also spoke about how relieved she was once her final was over, how her whole body showed it, then she says she can't wait to get back into the water to relieve some of the stress she is feeling. That left we feeling ambiguous. The parents are young without a wrinkle on their faces, but a few pages later they have worry lines. I think the author was saying they were frowning in worry, but having worry lines, in my mind, is something more akin to wrinkles, which they didn't have. Maybe I'm picking nits, but it took me out of the story and I think a more astute editor should have caught the contradiction in words. Again. The story sounds familiar. A person coming of age to find that they are a guardian over a people or a planet. The writing was good enough to keep me interested, though, I would have liked a reason to keep reading earler on. If this is your type of story, it looks like the author has a strong following and then there are two more books to enjoy.
