Laura Mendoza, Unima: Developing Low-Cost Diagnostics for 3 Billion People, Ep 108 Laura Mendoza was already working on solutions for tuberculosis, the leading infectious killer worldwide, before COVID-19 came along. As founder and CPO of biotech Unima, Laura develops fast and low-cost diagnostics for infectious diseases. Her solutions help decision-makers create better programs for the treatment and control of these diseases. From the first mentions of coronavirus early in 2020, Laura and her team immediately understood the magnitude of the problem. Quickly shifting gears, Unima started to focus on solutions for COVID-19, such as molecular tests for antibody detection. I sit down with Laura to talk about why she decided to tackle human health and how she became an entrepreneur while completing several Masters along the way. We also discuss the work Unima was doing before COVID-19 and what it’s like to raise money as a biotech company in Latin America. Tackling global health It had never crossed Laura’s mind to become an entrepreneur until she entered the workforce. After a couple of years, she realized that there were so many unaddressed problems in the world that needed to be addressed. It was while working for Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, that Laura saw an opportunity in biotech, specifically in animal health. Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about how Laura pivoted her company from animal health and focused on human health. From TB to COVID-19 Although the current focus is on solutions for COVID-19 due to the global context, Laura explains that Unima was developing solutions for one of the world’s biggest killers: tuberculosis. She states that if the world population were to be mixed together, 1 in 3 people would have latent TB. And 1 in 10 people with latent TB, would later develop TB itself. Therefore, TB incidence in the world is very high and has major consequences in people’s lives including loss of jobs, discrimination, and, of course, death. Find out how Laura developed a solution for TB diagnostics through her research on bovines in this episode of Crossing Borders. Raising capital as a biotech in Latin America Laura explains that most Latin American investors and mentors treated Unima as they would any other traditional tech company. However, while software can be tested in real-time, biotech products are more time-intensive. Not to mention, it’s a heavily regulated industry, and the way in which traction is demonstrated can vary greatly from the standard tech company. Finding an investor that understood how the biotech industry worked was crucial for Unima’s development. In this episode of Crossing Borders Laura explains how Unima found the right investors in Latin America for its specific industry. Laura Mendoza is tackling some of the world’s most urgent problems with Unima’s solutions. Unima has the potential to help over 3 billion people gain access to timely diagnostics, and provide governments with the right information for better policies. Giving Life to PuppetryIn this second episode of our two-part interview with Richard Bradshaw, we discuss UNIMA Australia, a book about shadow puppets, Norman Hetherington of Mr Squiggle and how Richard makes his puppets so distinct and engaging for young audiences.-World renowned shadow puppet master Richard Bradshaw needs no introduction to the international puppetry community. His work has been seen by millions through a life time of stage performances all over the world and through television appearances including “The Muppet Show” and an hour-long documentary in the series “Jim Henson Presents The World of Puppetry”. Australian children grew up with performances of his shadow artistry on ABC TV's “Playschool”, where his shadow puppets were broadcast for over 30 years. From 1976 to 1983 Richard was Artistic Director of Australia's then largest puppetry company, the Marionette Theatre of Australia. Under his directorship the company secured a permanent theatre space in The Rocks in Sydney. As Artistic Director, Richard introduced modern puppetry techniques to Australian audiences and inspired many young puppeteers who were given the opportunity to work and learn from some of Australia's best puppeteers and puppet makers.Richard has performed with his shadow puppets for audiences of children and adults for over 50 years to over 25 countries. In 1986 Richard received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “for services to the arts as a puppeteer” and in 1987 he shared the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award “for sustained excellence in the field of puppetry”.

Seguir retándome a mí mismo. Mary Robinette is a puppeteer, audiobook narrator, science fiction author, and she is no stranger to winning awards. One of her short stories won a Hugo award, she won the Campbell award for Best New Writer, and one of her novels was nominated for a Nebula – all of which are a big deal in the science fiction and fantasy genre. But her list of accomplishments goes on, with Mary Robinette also winning two UNIMA awards for her work in puppetry. I was delighted to get the opportunity to talk to Mary Robinette about her work; particularly as she has found success in what appear to be two very different worlds – although she disagrees, and you'll hear why. Some of the topics we cover include: - the importance of ‘doodling' and how she uses it to get out of feeling ‘stuck' - managing depression as a creative, and still getting work done - the importance of valuing your own taste And a wonderful writing challenge to encourage you to ‘cross pollinate.' This was an intriguing, and surprisingly frank, conversation that covered a wide range of topics and offers an insight into two fascinating, creative worlds.

World Puppetry Day 2019 Special Broadcast | Puppetry Artist Master Ruban from Coimbatore Talks !! World Puppetry Day comes every March 21. The idea came from the puppet theater artist Javad Zolfaghari from Iran. In 2000 at the XVIII Congress of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette, (UNIMA) in Magdeburg, he made the proposal for discussion. Two years later, at a meeting of the International Council of UNIMA in June 2002 in Atlanta, the date of the celebration was identified. The first celebration was in 2003.
