TESLA POSTS RECORD REVENUE AND PROFITS IN THIRD QUARTER "The company reported $1.62 billion in (GAAP) net income for the quarter, the second time it has surpassed $1 billion. In the year-ago quarter, net income was $331 million. The record results were driven by improved gross margins of 30.5% on its automotive business and 26.6% overall, both of which are records for at least the last five quarters." writes CNBC: "Automotive revenue rose to $12.06 billion and costs of automotive revenue amounted to $8.38 billion for the quarter. Tesla also generated $806 million in revenue from its energy business, which combines solar and energy storage products, and $894 million in services and other revenue, which includes vehicle maintenance and repairs, auto insurance and sales of Tesla-branded merchandise among other things" "Tesla was aided by $279 million in sales of regulatory credits to rivals, although that number fell for the second straight quarter. CEO Elon Musk did not join the call, as he has typically done in the past. [CFO Zach] Kirkhorn said the company remained on track to achieve a goal of 50 percent year-over-year volume growth, although fourth-quarter production could be hampered by a number of factors, including the ongoing chip shortage or supply chain issues at ports around the U.S." writes Automotive News Europe: "He said Tesla planned to begin production at assembly plants in Texas and Germany before the end of the year, although the EV maker will not deliver vehicles from those factories until 2022." Only 2,000 drivers have been able to test the FSD program over the past year. Earlier this month, Tesla rolled out version 10.2 to around 1,000 additional owners with perfect safety scores. While the safety score, which must be a perfect 100 to gain access to the beta software, is being used to meter out access to FSD, Tesla has other uses in mind. The company wants to use the feature to better inform its blossoming telematics insurance product, which just launched in Texas in early October." After Tesla reported production of 237,823 vehicles and the delivery of 241,300 vehicles last quarter, we declared that Tesla has basically achieved a run rate of 1 million vehicles. Now the automaker confirmed that it exited the last quarter with a run rate of 1 million cars – an incredible achievement for a company that was only delivering a few thousand cars per year less than a decade ago." writes electrek. Zach Kirkhorn CFPO said: "“We were also able to achieve an annualized production run rate of over 1 million cars towards the end of the quarter. The increase in production rate has been primarily been driven by further ramping of Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai. Additionally, we have made great progress in increasing production volume of Model S and have recently started production and ramp of Model X.” Read more: https://electrek.co/2021/10/20/tesla-achieves-annual-run-rate-1-million-electric-cars/ TESLA SWITCHES ALL STANDARD-RANGE VEHICLES TO LIFEPO CHEMISTRY "In a move to offer reduced-cost Model 3s to the Chinese market, Tesla started offering its base Model 3 with an LFP battery pack. Since LFP chemistry makes for a less energy-dense cell, it provides a lower range but at significantly lower production costs. That move worked so well for Tesla that now, according to its 2021 Q3 shareholder deck (PDF), released Wednesday, it's moving to LFP chemistry for all of its standard-range vehicles around the world." reports CNET: "The current US Model 3 Standard Range Plus offers up 262 miles of EPA estimated range for a retail price of $43,490, including destination. It's unclear if Tesla will pass the savings from the chemistry switch on to its customers or if it will just pocket the difference, but what is clear is that we're likely to see a slight range dip from the change." It costs 299,200 KRW (about $255) and according to Tesla's website, allows charging at up to 500 V and up to 300 A, which means that the peak is limited to 150 kW. We guess that it might be less in the real world (like 100-120 kW), but let's wait for reports from the field." says InsideEVs: "An important piece of news is that the adapter is coming to North America soon. While the opening of the Supercharging network to other EVs was announced (through an app), it will probably first happen in Europe, where Superchargers already have plugs compatible with the CCS Combo 2 standard" Read more: https://insideevs.com/news/541781/tesla-ccs1-adapter-us-soon/ TESTED: 2022 AUDI RS E-TRON GT BEATS EPA RANGE BY 53 MILES "The 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT is the high-performance variant of Audi's first all-electric sedan, the e-tron GT. It's also closely related to Porsche's all-electric Taycan Turbo. According to the EPA, the RS e-tron GT should be capable of cruising 232 miles on a full battery charge before needing to plug in again. That's 20 miles more than the EPA projects for the 2021 Taycan Turbo — and 6 miles fewer than the standard e-tron GT." says edmunds.com: " the 2020 Taycan 4S outperformed its EPA range in our testing by a wider margin — 120 miles — than any other EV to date. Its official range for 2020 was 203 miles, yet it covered a remarkable 323 miles on our test loop. At the end of the day, we had traveled a total of 285 miles in the 2022 RS e-tron GT. That's 53 miles, or 22.8%, better than its EPA estimate — and 12 miles farther than the non-RS e-tron GT could manage. This range was achieved despite the RS e-tron GT's larger wheels and tires and its 42 extra pounds on our scales." After the Noir (black) and Sol (white), we were just waiting to see Luna (silver), which was released with a provocative YouTube video teasing billionaires that want to make tourism in space and settle on Mars." says Gus at autoevolution: "Being Aptera's latest Alpha prototype does not mean that production is anywhere nearer. The company will now build ten Beta prototypes, which are meant for crash testing. The Gamma prototypes are like pre-production cars, while the Delta development phase corresponds to the production vehicles. As Jason Hill – Vehicle Designer at Aptera – said in a Q&A published on the company's website, Beta vehicles will also incorporate “packaging and comfort improvements, and several refinements for the interior design including seating, door panel and instrument panel.” As Aptera's FWD option, the Luna is the first example of the derivative that will eventually reach 1,000 miles of range with a 100 kWh battery pack." MADE IN CHINA MODEL 3'S LEAVE FOR EUROPE NEXT TUESDAY "The first batch of Gigafactory Shanghai’s China-made Model 3 is about to begin their journey to Europe. The vehicles are reportedly en route to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, where they will be distributed to countries such as Germany and France." says Teslarati: "Recent reports from Chinese media have announced the shipment of thousands of Made-in-China Standard Range Plus Model 3s from Gigafactory Shanghai. As noted by Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla, the shipments will start next week on Tuesday, October 27. Tesla owner-enthusiast Armand Vervaeck suggested that the China-made Model 3s could be shipped by train to Europe due to the vehicles being fitted with protective wraps. Based on comments under Teslarati’s previous article, it seems that shipments by train would have an estimated arrival time of two weeks." This does point to towards Model Y coming to Europe, if demand in China allows. And Model 3 from Fremont no longer has to do the 20 day journey down the West Coast, Mexico etc, through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic. Plus the margin on those MIC cars is much better. As a commenter notes: "Tesla can charge more for an SR+ in Europe vs China, LFP Version provides better margin compared to the US Model 3 might be battery cell constraint along with the model Y ramp. So to supply Europe, they can further diversify their cells. So I believe they bypass Chinese demand in favor of supplying Europe. Can't wait to see first European YouTube reviews about the MIC M3 build quality etc." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-china-export-europe-start-date/ TESLA RESEARCHERS PRESENT BATTERY WITH 2 MILLION MILE LIFECYCLE "Tesla battery researchers around Jeff Dahn have presented updated test results for their battery cells. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers." says electrive: "With “special additives”, the batteries should be able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Assuming a relatively conservative 350 kilometer range per cycle (i.e., a full charge from 0 to 100 percent), this would be 3.5 million kilometers. Whether 3.2 or 3.5 million kilometers: the one million miles or 1.6 million kilometers announced in September 2019 seem to be clearly surpassed. If the batteries were only discharged by 25 to 50 per cent of their capacity, they would show almost no degradation. This is a charge level range that many electric car drivers use in practice – the battery is rarely discharged to less than 20 per cent, on the other hand, it is rarely charged over 80 per cent." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/ TESLA HAS OVER 120 OPERATIONAL MICROGRIDS "Tesla has over 120 operational microgrids around the world using its batteries and renewable energy, according to a new comment from an executive. Ever since the launch of Tesla Energy and its stationary energy storage products, Tesla started working on microgrid projects" says electrek: "Michael Snyder, director of engineering and construction, energy projects at Tesla, released the information in a Linkedin post about a new position on the microgrid team: If you like solving problems at the nexus of power systems interactions, protection coordination, system and product level controls, and DERs (Powerpacks, Megapacks, solar, and generators), check out the link below for a microgrid-focused product engineer. We have 120+ operational microgrids around the world with high impact to a variety of communities/customers. This is a unique and rewarding role." https://electrek.co/2020/10/19/tesla-120-operational-microgrids-world/ TESLA EXPANDS CHARGING IN EUROPE Tesla’s Supercharger network has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the quarter with over 250 new Supercharging stalls located all over Europe, with around 240 of these being V3 Superchargers. All our chargers are placed on well-travelled routes which allow you to explore every corner of Europe. The following Tesla Supercharging sites have been opened since July 1st 2020: Denmark: Ikast – 12 stalls Finland: Huittinen – 6 stalls (2 V2) France: Angoulême, Sisteron, Les Herbiers - 28 stalls (4 V2) Germany: Berlin EUREF Campus, Braak, Eschborn, Herzsprung, Wismar, Hilden – 72 stalls (4 V2) Iceland: Fossvogur – 4 stalls (V2) Italy: Forli – 4 stalls Netherlands: Akersloot, Apeldoorn Oost, Middelburg, Rijswijk – 40 stalls Norway: Aksdal South, Bamble – 36 stalls Portugal: Loule – 8 stalls Spain: Aranda de Duero – 4 stalls Switzerland: Bulle, Martigny – 16 stalls UK: Fort William, Hilton Park Southbound, Leeds-Whitehouse, Lifton, Manchester South, Wyboston – 42 stalls (14 V2) Across Europe there are over 5300 Supercharger stalls spread across nearly 530 locations and 29 countries in Europe. The Tesla Supercharger Network will continue to expand around the globe to enable all-electric journeys to be effortless. PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID "Porsche has announced two new hybrid powertrains for its Panamera hatchback and Panamera Sport Turismo estate, bringing back the 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models to the range. These join the 4S E-Hybrid that was launched when the Panamera was facelifted a few months back" writes evo.co.uk: "The Turbo S E-Hybrid reclaims its position as the most powerful Panamera derivative, now peaking at 690bhp, 9bhp more than before. The extra power is derived from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at the core of the powertrain, which on its own produces 563bhp. Despite its near 2500kg kerb weight, the Turbo S E-Hybrid will reach 62mph in 3.2sec (0.2sec quicker than the previous model) and go on to 196mph, while also being able to cruise for up to 31 miles on the electric motors alone. "The German plugin vehicle market had another record month in September, with a little over 41,000 registrations. Plugin hybrid (PHEV) registrations continued going through the roof, up 463% to 20,127 units" reports Clean Technica: "The plugin vehicle share reached a record 16% (8% fully electric vehicles/BEV), pulling the yearly tally to 10% (4.8% BEV), so this market has officially reached double digits, also known as … The Disruption Zone." "LG Chem already has two battery cell plants in Europe and both are in Poland where most of LG Chem’s global battery cell production is located. If production capacity is expanded at its already operating plants, LG Chem can produce 120 GWh annually and this would be enough to assemble more than 2 million (2.400.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." according to PushEVs: "With a third battery cell plant in Europe LG Chem expects to reach a global annual production capacity of 260 GWh by 2023. This would be enough to produce more than 5 million (5.200.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." https://pushevs.com/2020/10/19/lg-chem-plans-to-build-a-new-factory-in-europe/ BMW PRODUCED ITS 200,000TH I3 MODEL "The 200 000th BMW i3 model rolled off the production line yesterday – almost silently as always. The BMW i3s with Fluid Black metallic paint finish and accents in BMW i Blue was produced for a customer from Saxony and will be delivered by the BMW branch in Leipzig." "With the start of production in 2013, the plant in Saxony became a pioneer and centre of excellence for sustainable mobility. The BMW i3 was the BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered large-scale serial model and also the company’s first vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic" https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/10/bmw-produced-its-200000th-i3-model/ FOUR CAR CHARGING NETWORKS JOIN OCTOPUS ENERGY NETWORK Octopus Energy announces that four electric vehicle (EV) charging firms have joined its Electric Juice Network in a bid to simplify on-street charging. MAZDA STARTS PRODUCTION OF MX-30 EV "On 19 May 2020, Mazda officially started production of its first all-electric model, the Mazda MX-30, which is expected to enter the European market in Autumn 2020 (early 2021 in the UK). There is no word about the market launch in the U.S." says Motor1.com: "This new compact crossover/SUV, equipped with e-Skyactiv drive, is produced at the Ujina plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan. The initial First Edition version will be very well equipped, including: "a windscreen projecting head-up display, 8-way electric adjustable drivers’ seat, a colour 7-inch TFT dial display, a leather wrapped steering wheel and chrome trim accents." In Germany the price starts from €33,490 with 19% VAT, without subsidies, while in the UK it's £26,995 including £3,000 grant. With a relatively small 35.5 kWh battery, the Mazda MX-30 will have a range of about 124 miles (200 km) WLTP, which should be enough for some applications, but for sure not enough for the mainstream market. Mazda explains that the capacity is an optimum balance between the range and CO2 emissions from an LCA (Life-Cycle Assessment) perspective." 200 km (124 miles) of WLTP range energy consumption of 19 kWh/100 km (62 miles) WLTP 35.5 kWh battery pack (prismatic cells, total nominal voltage of 355 V) 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.7 seconds top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) front-wheel drive (e-SKYACTIV powertrain) AC synchronous motor: 107 kW (143 bhp) and 271 Nm AC charging using 6.6 kW on-board charger DC fast charging (CCS Combo) by 80% in 40 minutes (up to 50 kW) https://uk.news.yahoo.com/mazda-starts-production-mx-30-182000179.html FIRST SHANGHAI-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE DELIVERED TODAY "The news emerged from Chinese website The Paper. The Shanghai-made Tesla Model 3 Long Range is currently available in rear-wheel drive (RWD), and differs from the import Tesla Model 3s with distinctive Chinese badging (see image above). It has a 202 kW (281 hp) rear motor and a 77 kWh battery — fairly identical specs to the original US Model 3 Long Range RWD variant offered back in 2017–2018, but since discontinued. " writes CleanTechnica: "The current price of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range in China starts at 344,000 RMB (around ~$48,000) after subsidies, as per Tesla’s website. The entry level Shanghai-made Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is priced from 272,550 RMB (~ $38,000) after subsidies. In related news, Tesla Shanghai is also on track to lift production volume to 4,000 Model 3s per week as soon as next month (June 2020). Model Y is planned to be ready for production in Shanghai from Q1 2021" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/20/breaking-first-shanghai-made-tesla-model-3-long-range-delivered-today/ GMC TEASES HUMMER EV'S REMOVABLE ROOF PANELS "Today was supposed to be the day that GM took the wraps off its GMC Hummer EV. We were told as much during the Super Bowl commercial, but GM revised it to an undecided future date, citing the coronavirus as the reason. Instead of the big reveal, we have a teaser. " says Autoblog: "The Hummer EV is going to feature removable roof panels, and now we get a better look at them. There are four roof panels and a front T-bar that come out of the truck. You can see what that looks like in the video at the top of this post. Comparisons to Jeep are obvious as the open-air experience is likely similar to the Gladiator and Wrangler with their hardtop roof panels removed." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/20/gmc-hummer-ev-teaser-roof/ NORTHVOLT AND VATTENFALL PARTNER ON MODULAR ZERO-EMISSION POWER OPTION OFFERING Northvolt and Vattenfall have announced a new battery energy storage solution that could provide a zero-emission alternative to running diesel generators on remote mine sites. The Voltpack Mobile System is a rugged, highly modular lithium-ion battery system that can serve as a modular power supply solution to meet energy and power requirements of a wide variety of market scenarios, the companies said. Vattenfall will be the first to offer the battery unit to the market and has identified the need for sustainable solutions at industries, for microgrids, construction sites as well as for event organisers, the companies said. Voltpack Mobile System delivers up to 250 kW with a scalable capacity from 245 kWh to 1,225 kWh of available energy, according to the companies. Prime applications include powering remote electricity grids, reinforcing weak grids, supporting electric vehicle charging and delivering grid services such as balancing power, flexibility, or other ancillary services, they said. GM BATTERY CHIEF: 600-MILE EVS VIABLE, MILLION-MILE BATTERY IN SIGHT "Beyond a no-cameras showing in early March to analysts, dealers, and invited press, General Motors still hasn’t provided a first look at its next-generation electric vehicles—including the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq that are both due to go on sale before the end of 2021. " says Green Car Reports: "And as a new joint venture between GM and LG Chem, called Ultium Cells LLC, officially started clearing ground Tuesday for an Ohio battery factory that will supply the power packs for these upcoming electric vehicles, Tim Grewe, GM’s global electrification and battery systems director, was already eager to talk about what developments might arrive a few years after the plant ramps up. The cells the new facility will make are large-format pouch cells, following a NCMA (nickel cobalt manganese aluminum) chemistry that was developed within GM. Compared to existing NCM cells, they’re lower in cobalt content but add aluminum to the cathode structure for longer life. He said: This is a giant leap forward on the road to low-cost batteries, and actually keeping the performance and keeping the range. We’ve reduced the cobalt content in these batteries that’s 70% compared to what’s in our Bolt EV today. One cell is used across all of our applications, all of our vehicles ensure that we can take the benefits of manufacturing scale and quality. So you can kind of think of it as 100-amp hours, which is a big number. It’s about the same as 20 small cylindrical cells that you may be familiar with. Instead of rolling those electrodes up and putting them individual cans, we lay them flat. And with that flatness, we then very securely weld them with robust joints, to have a long, single pouch. The beauty of the pouch cell is you have a plus side and a minus side, and you have two tabs that are connected or welded together with the electrodes. There’s 20 plus and minuses stacked together in that pouch. And so it was a fundamental strategy to say, well, how can you disassemble that and not have the cathode and the anode mixed together where you have to do some chemical process to separate those? You can disassemble this pouch cell very easily. You take the two tabs, and you pull apart. And your cathode is in your right hand, and your anode is in your left hand. And now you enabled low-cost recycling." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128221_gm-battery-chief-600-mile-evs-viable-million-mile-battery-in-sight EU COMMISSION CONSIDERS 100 BILLION EURO TRANSPORT PACKAGE "The EU Commission has apparently drawn up initial proposals for an economic and climate protection package in the transport sector worth up to 100 billion euros. Among other things, a purchase premium for ‘cleaner cars’ is planned. It is still disputed, however, which cars should be included." Reports Elective: "such a purchase premium could be financed with up to 20 billion euros over the next two years – from funds of two already existing EU programmes, i.e. not directly from the reconstruction packages currently under discussion. There are opposing opinions on what exactly constitutes clean cars. Apparently, under certain circumstances, consideration is being given to promoting cars that exceed the European limit of 95 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/20/eu-commission-considers-100-billion-euro-transport-package/ MOTORSPORT UK ANNOUNCES NEW ELECTRIFIED VEHICLE REGULATIONS "Full Electrified Vehicle technical and safety regulations have been issued for the first time by Motorsport UK, the country's motorsport governing body." Says Green Car reports: "Motorsport UK reckons it is the first motorsport national governing body to fully develop regulations in this area. The framework caters for all types of electrified vehicle, including full-electric, plug-in hybrid, and conventional hybrid. The regulations will allow Motorsport UK to create new categories for motorsport competition in future. Regulations will allow grassroots-level racing for standard production electric and electrified vehicles to compete unmodified in disciplines that allow standard road cars - for example, Sprint and Hill-climb road car categories, or Autotests and Autosolos." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8914/motorsport-uk-announces-new-electrified-vehicle-regulations/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? TESLA CUTS BASE PRICE OF NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X VEHICLES "Tesla significantly reduced the base price today of its newly upgraded Model S and Model X vehicles that launched just a month ago. With the changes, Tesla also brought back a ‘Standard Range’ option for both vehicles – an option that has been on and off the configurator over the past year. For Model S, it started at $78,000 and it offers a range of 285 miles on a single charge and for Model X, it starts at $83,000 and the range is 250 miles. Now just a few weeks later, Tesla updated its online configurator to reduce the price of each model by $3,000 and $2,000 respectively" writes Fred Lambert for Electrek. Tesla came back with a statement and by the sound of it, I don't think they would have put it as first item on today's podcast! Tesla said: “Like other car companies, we periodically adjust pricing and available options. These pricing changes represent a reduction of about 2% to 3% in Model X and S prices. Last week, we raised US Model 3 prices by 1%. By any reasonable standard, these small changes are not newsworthy.” A comment from Guy Hall: "Two buyers getting the same price on car from dealerships is about as likely as paying the same price for your airline ticket as the person sitting next to you. Price adjustments from dealerships and manufacturers are frequently going on behind the curtain. At least Tesla's changes are transparent and in the open. I would take transparency over arguing with the dealership hoping I get a fair price. You could argue that the transparent pricing could affect your resale value, though keep in mind it could go either way." https://electrek.co/2019/05/21/tesla-price-model-s-x-changes/ AUDI Q5 55 TFSI E QUATTRO DEBUTS WITH PLUG-IN HYBRID POWERTRAIN "Following the launch of the E-Tron Quattro and the China-only Q2 L E-Tron, another Audi is getting an electric motor. Unlike the other two, the new Q5 TFSI E Quattro (not the best name, right?) retains the combustion engine to form a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine that develops 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and 273 pound-feet (370 Newton-meters) of torque with an electric motor rated at a peak output of 141 hp (105 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm)." reports Motor1.com: "Audi says the plug-in hybrid setup enables the midsize luxury SUV to offer a combined output of 362 hp (270 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). The electrified muscle grants the Q5 with a sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in only 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph (239 kph), which isn’t half bad given the vehicle’s size and the relatively small four-cylinder engine. That zero-emissions range is guaranteed by a lithium-ion battery pack with a 14.1-kWh capacity stored underneath the trunk’s floor. It takes only two and a half hours to fully charge the batteries through a 400 V/16 outlet while from a household socket it needs approximately six hours." https://www.motor1.com/news/350614/audi-q5-tfsi-e-quattro/ SHELL LAUNCHES E-FLUIDS TO OPTIMISE ELECTRIC VEHICLE PERFORMANCE Shell has launched a new range of fluids specifically designed to work in battery electric vehicles (EVs). These E-Transmission Fluids, E-Thermal Fluids and E-Greases will make battery EVs perform better and be more efficient. This is part of Shell’s ongoing drive to support electric mobility and offer more and cleaner energy solutions for our customers. Shell is continuing to explore how to serve the world’s increasing number of EV drivers, both on our forecourts and beyond. Shell has been working closely with automotive and component manufacturers to engineer these “first fill” fluids that effectively and efficiently meet a broad range of battery EV performance requirements. These products are targeted at the growing number of automotive manufacturers who are building EVs. E-Fluids will help battery EVs reduce their lifecycle emissions and extend their lifespans due to their ultra-low viscosity properties which increase vehicles efficiency, and outstanding ageing properties which exceeds conventional oils. Shell has also produced a range of fluids, Shell Helix Hybrid, which are designed to work specifically with hybrid vehicles. https://www.shell.com/business-customers/lubricants-for-business/news-and-media-releases/2019/shell-e-fluid-to-optimise-electric-vehicle-performance.html HONDA'S ADORABLE ELECTRIC CAR IS OFFICIALLY ON SALE "It’s been a long time in the making, but reservations are finally open for the Honda e – the Japanese brand’s cutesy little urban EV – and we couldn’t be more excited. We were first introduced to Honda’s baby back in 2017 when it was shown to the world as the Urban EV Concept, and like first-time parents we instantly fell in love. That was a tough act to follow, but when we saw it for the second time as the E Prototype in Geneva this year we were not disappointed. " writes Greg Potts for TopGear: "Honda had 24,000 expressions of interest after that unveiling – around 6,000 of which came from the UK.vNow known as simply the Honda e, there’s still no word on a final price, but expect to pay between £25k and £30k for a range of 125 miles, rear-wheel drive and the ability to fast charge to 80% battery capacity in 30 minutes. This is very much designed to be a city-dwelling run-around." Honda said "We are delighted to be offering a reservation option to our customers in select European markets for the first time with the Honda e. The Honda e in prototype form has received an overwhelming response and with over 25,000 registrations of interest across Europe, customers now have the opportunity to secure priority status to order the model" https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/hondas-adorable-electric-car-officially-sale BYD DELIVERS ELECTRIC BUSES TO JAPAN "China's new energy vehicle manufacturer BYD has delivered its electric buses to Japan's Oze National Park, the Shenzhen-headquartered company said Monday." reports China.org.cn: "The J6 model of the bus, specifically designed for Japan and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, has a compact body to enhance accessibility on Japan's narrow streets and a low floor designed to cater to the aged society of Japan. It was the fourth time that BYD has delivered electric buses to Japan, the company said, noting that at present, one in every three electric buses in Japan's public transport market is provided by BYD. As of March 2019, BYD has a global reach boasting sales of over 50,000 electric buses in more than 50 countries and regions, as well as 17,000 units sold domestically." http://www.china.org.cn/business/2019-05/21/content_74805404.htm EFACEC LAUNCHES 2ND GENERATION FAST CHARGER FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Efacec has just given a new step in the electric mobility field with the development a new fast charger for electric vehicles, called QC45 Generation 2. This charging station is the 2nd generation of the company’s fast charger bestseller, with significant improvements in software and hardware domains. The official presentation of this product will take place on May 21st in Lyon, France, at the EVS32 Fair. With close to 4.000 fast charging equipment spread across five continents, mostly on the European and American continents, Efacec invests in the continuous evolution of its products to meet the current and future needs of the user of EV. But with DC power up to 50 kW, is that future proof? CHEVY VOLT MARKETING CONFUSION: EXPLAINING PHEVS IS HARD "Automakers have had difficulty explaining the unique benefits of owning a plug-in hybrid. The Volt very quickly became the best selling plug-in vehicle in the United States. It held this title until it was finally de-throned by the Model 3." reports InsideEVs: "According to Autotrader’s Michael Harley, Chevy marketers were never able to properly educate consumers. “Overall, marketing and advertising for the Volt needed to focus on education as much as it did traditional selling. (...) A lack of a proper customer perception played a very large role in the demise of the Chevrolet Volt." Chevrolet marketing director of cars and crossovers, Steve Majoros, says GM focused too much on the technical aspects instead of showing the “promise of what Volt delivered.” That being a cleaner, more environmentally friendly driving experience." https://insideevs.com/news/350574/chevy-volt-confusion-phev-consumers-videos/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 episodes, and not in any of the other channels, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days.
