Approachably Cool: 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo: 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hatch

America on the Road

This week's episode of America on the Road features road tests of two standout vehicles--the 2025 Honda Civic Sport Touring hatchback and the 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo. Co-Host Chris Teague put the Civic Sport Touring hatchback to the asphalt, and he found it to be one of the best values in the stellar Civic lineup. Powered by a hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine and electric motor, it delivers 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. With 50 mpg city and 45 highway, it's one of the most efficient compact cars available, while at the same time delivering laudable performance. Four drive modes, a refined suspension, a 9-inch infotainment screen with Google built-in, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and full Honda Sensing safety suite round out a well-equipped, tech-forward package. He'll offer a full report. Host Jack Nerad took the wheel of the 2025 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo, a $39,455 compact SUV with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque from a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. All-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic, and premium touches like Terracotta leather-trimmed seats and a 10-speaker Bose system give it a refined edge. Though fuel economy sits at 24 mpg combined, the CX-5 impresses with its sophistication, design, and feature-rich value. And it is arguably the most fun-to-drive vehicle in its segment. At the same time, its price might surprise -- or even shock-- you. At the top of the news, we detail the debut of the 2026 Lexus RZ, now offered in three EV variants, including the new 402-horsepower F SPORT. Lexus has improved its range, added fast charging, and introduced performance upgrades like “M Mode,” which simulates manual shifting. Meanwhile, the 2026 Honda CR-V gets tech and trim upgrades, including a new off-road-ready TrailSport Hybrid model with standard AWD and improved fuel economy. All trims now offer wireless phone integration and larger screens. Not to be outdone, Toyota pulled the wraps off the all-new 2026 RAV4, the CR-V's chief nemesis, and we'll have more details on its gala introduction next week. In this week's auto-political news, a U.S. Senate resolution could overturn California's authority to enforce its 2035 all-EV mandate. Backed by automakers and dealers, supporters argue it protects national market consistency, while critics warn it could undercut state autonomy and slow EV adoption. Another legal battle has emerged between the California New Car Dealers Association and Honda/Sony over direct-to-consumer Afeela EV sales. The CNCDA claims these sales violate franchise laws requiring manufacturers to work through licensed dealers. The case may set a major precedent as EV startups and joint ventures explore nontraditional retail models. Also in the news, General Motors has halted U.S. exports to China, citing trade tensions and the winding down of its premium Durant Guild brand. GM will continue operating in China through joint ventures, but this move signals shifting priorities amid rising tariffs and regulatory uncertainty. This week's guest, Andre Ravinowich, Senior Manager of Product Planning at Hyundai, joins the show to talk about the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 9, a large electric SUV set to broaden Hyundai's EV lineup with space, performance, and tech innovation. Nerad drove the new battery-electric wonder during a Hyundai-sponsored event in Savannah, Georgia. To close out the show, the listener question of the week comes from Stanley in Macon, Georgia, who asks: “What's your take on the return of sedans and smaller cars? Are they gone for good, or do you think there will be a comeback for cars?” Jack and Chris weigh in, noting that while crossovers dominate, rising vehicle prices, tighter parking, and renewed interest in efficiency could trigger a modest resurgence for sedans and compacts—especially hybrids and EVs. Jack Nerad's newest book Jack is now offering his newest crime novel, Only One Thing Stays the Same,

McLaren has just introduced the McLaren GTS, a replacement for the GT, and we have the details. The grand tourer marries supercar performance with everyday practicality. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine boasts 626 horsepower, 14 more than its predecessor, and it's lighter at 3,351 pounds. The result is what McLaren claims is a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 412 horsepower per ton. Clocking 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 0-124 mph in 8.9 seconds, it outpaces the well-regarded GT. Its structure, rooted in McLaren's carbon fiber monocoque chassis, enhances agility and stability. Crafted with recycled carbon fiber components, the GTS boasts a lower center of gravity and intelligent adaptive suspension. The exterior flaunts a more aggressive design, enriched by gloss black finishes and personalization choices like 'Lava Grey' paint and 'Turbine' forged alloy wheels exclusive to the GTS. Inside, upgrades feature softgrain Aniline leather seats. The McLaren GTS is now open for orders, with McLaren promising deliveries in 2024. At the same time, Lexus has introduced a far more approachable car. The 2024 RZ lineup is now headlined by the newly announced RZ 300e, offering a 266-mile range and starting at $56,300. The front-wheel-drive model employs a 72.8kWh battery to feed a drivetrain that generates 201 horsepower. Lexus says it will deliver an EPA-estimated MPGe of 137/112/125 (city/highway/combined). The new RZ model features a rear subframe replacing the electric drive axle of the RZ 450e. The all-wheel-drive RZ 450e utilizes the Lexus DIRECT4 system, balancing torque between its 150-kW front and 80-kW rear eAxle motors. Total system horsepower is 308, and the trim offers a 220-mile range. Also in the news this week, a new study shows that Tesla drivers are the most accident-prone. And the drivers of other brands come in for some criticism as well. You'll be surprised to learn which brand's drivers get the most DUIs, for example. We'll have details. In the road tests this week, Host Jack Nerad and guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo will discuss the 2024 Honda Accord and the 2024 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV. The Accord is a 2024 North American Car of the Year Finalists, and Nerad and DeLorenzo, two NACTOY jurors, discuss its merits in comparison to the other contenders — the Toyota Prius and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. Nerad and his family took a pre-holiday road trip in the Sequoia, which has been totally remade after the previous generation ran for more than a decade. How does it fare in comparison to the domestic stalwarts in the class, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition? We'll tell you in the road test segment. Also, in this episode, Nerad and DeLorenzo will discuss the most important news stories of 2023 and take a preview look at what might happen in the North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year awards, which will be presented in early January. Jill and Tom opened the program by discussing the show's recognition by Feedspot as one of the must-listen-to podcasts of 2023. Tom went on to discuss how impressed he was with the 2023 Lexus RX450e, the brand's first all-electric vehicle. Jill shared similar enthusiasm for the 2023 Honda Accord, especially in hybrid trim. The duo also spent a little time discussing industry supplier BorgWarner's spin off of its internal-combustion unit, Phinia, which went public last week. The move, per Tom, demonstrates BorgWarner's commitment to electrification. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcomed Sheldon Brown of Toyota to the program. Calling in from the Tacoma factory in Baja, Mexico, Sheldon shared loads of information about the redesigned midsize pickup, including intended buyer audience expectations, introduction timing, and details of the new Trailhunter off-road-ready trim level. Jill was subjected to Tom's “Corporate Fun Facts” quiz in the third segment. After the quiz Tom talked about the likable, but somewhat pricey Ford Bronco Sport Heritage Limited, which boasts cool retro design themes.

Auto - Rund ums Auto.

This week on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, our hosts ask "What's good and what's merely adequate?" as they discuss two Lexuses...or is that Lexii? Whatever the plural, the conversation starts with the 2023 Lexus RZ450e, an all-electric crossover with the same platform as the Toyota bZ4x. With polarizing looks, uninspired specs and an unnecessary steering gimmick, our hosts have plenty to talk about, specifically regarding if Lexus put its best effort forward with its first EV. Then the conversation shifts to the brand's first plug-in hybrid, the 2023 Lexus NX450h+, which cribs much of the mechanicals from the Toyota RAV4 Prime, and puts it all into a sexy, high-end body from Lexus. Benjamin suggests that this what it Lexus wants to actually make0151rather than its boring, bland EV offerings—and has many reasons to prove his point. Lexus has some important new vehicles coming this year, including an all-new 2023 Lexus RZ 450e crossover utility. And our special guest will share his thoughts about where the brand is going. Andrew Gilleland, Lexus Group VP, sat down for an exclusive interview with Host Jack Nerad recently, and the exec had interesting things to say about the luxury brand's future in the “electrified era.” Guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo joins us this week as Co-Host Chris Teague takes a break. Matt is the author of the new book How to Buy An Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership, and he and Jack Nerad will discuss the important questions facing potential first-time EV buyers. In the road test segment, Matt DeLorenzo will profile the all-new 2023 Toyota bZ4X battery-electric crossover. Matt had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of Toyota's first nationally marketed EV at the recent Motor Press Guild Drive Day 2022 event. And Host Jack Nerad drove the bZ4X at the Toyota HQ Confidential event in Texas. Also in the road test segment, Jack Nerad will give his initial impressions of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 off-road specialty pickup. Jack got the chance to drive the impressive vehicle at MPG Drive Day, and he'll tell you all about how it fared on the event's very challenging off-road course. In the news, car sales were down precipitously in the second quarter while at the same time finding a new car to buy continues to be difficult for consumers. We'll have the details and our reactions to that coming up. Meanwhile, a new study of the industry gives rosy predictions about the future of electric vehicles. But is the study right? We'll give you details on the study and share our opinions about the optimistic predictions for electric vehicle adoption. Are they real or just wishful thinking? We'll let you know. All that and much more coming up in this episode of America on the Road.

Show #1457 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Friday 6th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. LUCID KEEPS 2022 PRODUCTION TARGETS, RAISES EV PRICES - Lucid Group Inc. shares edged higher late Thursday after the EV maker reported a narrower-than-expected first-quarter loss and said its production volume remains on track despite ongoing supply-chain problems. - Lucid lost $81 million, or 5 cents a share,  in the quarter, compared with a loss of $2.9 billion, or $89.29 a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue reached $58 million, from $313,000, thanks to the delivery of 360 vehicles, Lucid said. - There's “strong demand” for the Lucid Air, the EV maker's luxury electric sedan, and reservations have topped 30,000, Lucid said. That translates to potential sales of $2.9 billion, it said. - Lucid kept its 2022 production volume outlook of between 12,000 vehicles and 14,000 vehicles. - The EV maker also announced price increases on most of its electric vehicle models beginning June 1. Current prices will be honored for existing reservations and any reservation made by May 31, Lucid said. - The Air will start at $87,400 for a base model and go up to $154,000 for the grand touring model, the company said. A “grand touring performance” model, announced two weeks ago, will remain at $179,000, Lucid said. - $5.4 billion of cash on hand Original Source : https://www.marketwatch.com/story/lucid-keeps-2022-production-targets-raises-ev-prices-11651783431?mod=mw_quote_news VOLVO CARS SHARE OF ELECTRIFIED CARS INCREASED TO 38.4%  - Volvo Cars reports sales of 47,150 cars in April, down 24.8 per cent compared with the same month last year.  Demand is still strong, especially for Volvo Cars' electrified vehicles and the share of Recharge models as part of total sales continues to increase. - In April Volvo Cars electrified Recharge models grew 18.7 cent compared with the same month in 2021 accounting for 38.4 per cent of total sales. The share of fully electric cars stood at 10 per cent. - European sales for April reached 19,822 cars, down 23.2 per cent compared with the same month last year. Volvo's electrified Recharge sales accounted for 51.4 per cent of the total sales in the region during the month. - Volvo Cars' US sales for the month reached 10,022 cars, down 9.2 per cent compared with April last year, with Recharge models making up 44.1 per cent of the total sales. But it's not good if people get into their cars and drive to busy urban areas instead of walking, cycling or using public transport,” the transport minister is quoted as saying. However, a final decision on the matter is still pending, the minister told broadcaster NRK. - According to the current legal situation, the tax rate for electric cars is less than 50 per cent of the tax on comparable petrol or diesel cars. At the time of purchase, there is no value-added tax of 25 per cent. In addition, tolls and parking fees are lower in many places. Subsidies for hybrid cars, on the other hand, have already expired. - . As NRK reports, there is a lack of money for investments in infrastructure projects or public transport due to declining revenues as the share of electric cars increases. A Warren, Ohio plant will begin production this August; a Spring Hill, Tennessee location is set to follow in 2023 and one in Lansing, Michigan begins in 2024. The Michigan plant alone is a $2.6 billion investment. According to GM, a fourth plant whose location has yet to be announced will be up and running in 2025. - The White House got involved in the effort this week, announcing over $3 billion to help companies like GM and others with the battery shortage. Story continues. A Biden official behind the effort noted to Yahoo Finance Monday that automakers will be a key beneficiary. - A GM spokesperson told Yahoo Finance that the company, which has close ties with the Biden White House, "is actively pursuing opportunities to localize as much of the EV and battery supply chain as possible and, as such, we are reviewing the battery-related Funding Opportunity Announcements authorized by the U.S. Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL)." Nevers laid out the electric automaker's policymaking wish list if the federal government wants to make transportation electrification a priority. - “The federal government can achieve ambitious electrification objectives by empowering companies to ramp production – this includes accelerating EV testing procedures, expediting and streamlining federal EV fleet requirements, and quickly providing visas for skilled workers,” - Supply chain challenges are a major constraint on Rivian's manufacturing plant in Normal, which has over 5,000 workers and is McLean County's second-largest employer. Production there is expected to hit 25,000 vehicles in 2022 – about half of what it could be if not for a shortage of chips and other materials. - Rivian's policymaking wish list for Congress includes:“Increase and accelerate” federal research efforts into new battery cell chemistry development, solid-state batteries, module and pack engineering, software design, and raw material sourcing.Reform domestic mining laws, some of which Rivian says date back to the 1870s, with an emphasis on conflict avoiding and permitting efficiency.Expand the federal consumer EV tax credit “without unnecessary limitations.”Create “exceptions” to state auto dealer franchise laws, which Rivian calls dealership “protection laws.” Rivian is fighting those laws on a state-by-state basis, calling them “one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in the U.S.” Original Source : https://www.wglt.org/local-news/2022-04-28/in-testimony-to-congress-rivians-policymaking-wish-list-leans-into-battery-supply-chain LEXUS ENGINEERING BOSS: 800-VOLT SYSTEM DONE, ELECTRIC IS THE FUTURE - In an interview with Lexus chief engineer Takashi Watanabe at a prototype drive for the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e in Barcelona, Spain, Green Car Reports learned about the automaker's thinking on electrical architectures, charging rates, and the electric future. - Watanabe said that for the automaker to realistically hit carbon neutrality, battery electric is the proper solution. - The key will be how efficiently we can manipulate and use electricity. And the challenge is “how small a battery can we get away with to achieve these goals,” Watanabe said. - When asked if Toyota and Lexus have finished work on an 800-volt electrical architecture, Wantanabe answered quickly: “Yes.” ut the first electric Lexus sold in the U.S., the 2023 RZ 450e, will not feature such an electric architecture or charge rate. The max charge rate of its 71.4-kwh battery pack will be 150 kw and it charges and runs at about 400 volts. - For Toyota and Lexus it'll be viewed upon a “case-by-case basis,” Watanabe said. The breakover point will be about 100 kwh, according to Watanabe. That's where charging rates will need to be faster and the electrical architecture will benefit from 800 volts. - When asked what is possible in terms of upgrading the RZ, or other electric cars, via over-the-air updates Watanabe said, “right now we're not trying to put any limitations or restrictions on what's possible through OTA.” The executive elaborated by saying for instance electric motor control, charging, supporting systems, or new value services can all be enhanced using OTA technology.
