Effective Accelerationism, abbreviated as e/acc, represents a collection of ideas and practices geared towards maximizing the likelihood of reaching the technocapital singularity. This movement aims to create an environment where emergent consciousness can thrive. Influential figures in the tech industry, such as Marc Andreessen, have shown their support by incorporating "e/acc" into their usernames. The movement's mascot is an enigmatic "tech founder" known as Beff Jezos. E/acc, short for Effective Accelerationism, is rooted in Nick Land's accelerationist theories. It advocates the belief that artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) will pave the way for a post-scarcity technological utopia. The movement's name is also a clever nod to Effective Altruism. E/acc communities predominantly thrive on Twitter, particularly through Twitter Spaces, where enthusiasts share e/acc manifestos via the Substack newsletter platform. Evan takes us back to a cult classic film from 1976, "Logan's Run" where society was controlled by unknown forces. Citizens anxiously awaited their 30th birthday and by "Rite of Carousel", they would be sacrificed for for the betterment of the society as a whole. And in our generation, what can we learn as late-in-life savers? Do we need to continue down a path of extreme consumerism to impress others? Evan asks you to think about this, and hold your hand high and be proud of how far you've come in your pursuit of financial independence. Are the numbers on your palm Red? Are the numbers on your palm Green? Own where you are right now. Enjoy the episode! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/evan-thomas1/message

Ah EPCOT, the one park in Disney World’s offerings that doesn’t slam visitors with a fistful of fairytales and kiddy rides. The most sophisticated of the Disney parks where you can learn about Japanese culture, sample food from across the globe, and throw your refuse into a talking garbage can all in one trip. EPCOT was the first area that Walt Disney had planned in what eventually would become Disney World, so it all began with a man, a mouse, and a plan for a creepy “utopian” society. Wait, what? “Disney is the place where dreams come true!!” I hear you shouting at your computer screen. Unfortunately, the place where dreams are free but the admission price is worth your kid’s college tuition began with a creepy fantasy to create a society that was all Disney all the time. Join Nancy J. Reid and Lisa D. Smith, the mother-daughter travel team and publishers of Big Blend Radio & TV Magazine and Parks & Travel Magazine, for Big Blend Radio’s Way Back When History Show showcasing the Museum of the New Llano Colony in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. This interview was recorded on-location as part of Big Blend’s Love Your Parks Tour, and features museum director Mary Ann Fussell, and Marci Cook from the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission. New Llano, Louisiana was founded in 1917 by Job Harriman, a former U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate from California, and former Labor lawyer and Socialist politician. It lasted more than 20 years and is considered by many to have been America’s most successful socialist Utopia. The Museum of the New Llano Colony is committed to preserving the legacy of the Llano del Rio Co-operative Colony and aims to share the untold stories of the colonists and their efforts to prove that a co-operative lifestyle was superior to that of a capitalistic society of the early twentieth century.
Utopianism in Star Trek. The Star Trek universe is sometimes claimed to be a utopia. From technological progress to an enlightened view of human nature and equal opportunity, the vision of the future depicted in Star Trek is often touted by fans as the best possible future for humankind. An often-overlooked aspect of utopianism, however, is that "utopia" literally means "no place," calling into question the plausibility of such an optimistic future. From intragalactic wars to power-hungry admirals to secret government organizations, the struggles of the 23rd and 24th centuries are all very familiar to us here in the 21st century, potentially undermining the very notion of human progress for which Star Trek is so famous. With the overall darker tone of Star Trek: Discovery and, to a lesser extent, Star Trek: Enterprise before that, it is reasonable to ask whether fans themselves, when pressed, really do still believe in the Star Trek vision of the future. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling discuss utopianism in the Star Trek universe, whether Star Trek should really be considered a utopia after all, the dark sides of "perfect" societies, and the importance of having an idealistic vision of future human society—a modern-day take on a futuristic Plato's Republic—whether or not that ideal future is possible to achieve. Chapters Intro (00:01:19) Initial Thoughts on Utopianism in the Star Trek Universe (00:01:55) DS9 and Criticisms of Federation Utopia (00:06:33) What Ways is the Society of the 24th Century Utopian?
