Poor poor Lawrence Fox - literally. The episode opens with the unfortunate news of Laurence Fox having to pay large sums in libel damages. Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke. Then all aboard the private jet - that's right, Lord David Cameron's £42m private jet, which he hired for his latest jaunt as Foreign Secretary, with the bill being footed by us taxpayers. Just as well he can be questioned about this in the House of Commons...Oh. Next stop is Question Time, and this week was Tory MP, Chris Philp's turn to make an utter tit of himself with geography skills as impressive as Dominic Raab's.Jemma and Marina move on to talk about the latest round of performative cruelty with the Govt's announcement around disability and sickness reforms, and seek to reassure anyone listening with some words of advice from Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis. To finish on a lighter note, Jemma and Marina serve up a Victoria Sponge of an underrated tweet of the week with pudding from Larry & Paul. We are back after our week off and there's loads to dissect after a massive couple of weeks on and off the pitch! Radio Wings' Nigel Jones joins us to discuss the news that Welling United are set to move for a groundshare at Tonbridge Angels while work goes on at Park View Road, looking at what this all means for the club and their fans, who are facing a 55-mile round trip to home games. Sittingbourne had a much longer trip than that on Tuesday night, but it was a wasted one as their clash at Littlehampton was called off 40 minutes before the start - boss Ryan Maxwell discusses that call off, his solution to prevent these from happening and the push for promotion from the Isthmian South East. It's mighty tight at the top of the SCEFL and we hear from two of the promotion contenders - Bearsted boss Kev Stevens talks about their growth this season and the advantage of having a player with the X Factor, while Corinthian boss Michael Golding discusses their good form and how he's got his enjoyment for the game back. We reflect on Deal's FA Vase progress and the rest of the news and moves from across the county, plus there's some of the usual chat and nonsense, including the Banana Sandwich crew, trigger warnings, Victoria Sponge and loads more besides. 2022 marks 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne, making Her Majesty the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Royal celebrations have often been associated with food, banquets and street parties, with this year following the script. In May 2022, Jemma Melvin created a lemon and Swiss roll amaretti trifle which beat around 5,000 other entries to be named the official pudding for the Jubilee. In this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we're looking at the traditions and recipes of British Royal celebrations of the past. We ask why some dishes capture the public's imagination, while others don't. We look at the parallels between the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and those that took place at the Queen's coronation in 1953. Today, like then, the celebrations are taking place at a time of hardship for many. Food prices are rising today as the cost of living crisis deepens. In 1953, we were still a year away from the end of rationing after the Second World War. And in today's society, where you're more likely to get your cooking inspiration from Heston Blumenthal than Her Majesty, we ask: Just how central is food to a modern day Royal celebration? Listen to the full episode to learn the true story of Coronation Chicken, why the Victoria Sponge is so reflective of the time it was created, and find out what treats our guests would rustle up if they were tasked with designing a new Royal dish. Meet the guests Mary Gwynn, Food writer Mary Gwynn was the founding editor of BBC Vegetarian Good Food and subsequently editor of M&S magazine. She has worked as a consultant editor and trainer for Waitrose for 12 years, and has written three vegetarian cookbooks. She has appeared on the sofa with Richard and Judy, cooked at the NEC with chefs such as Rick Stein, Brian Turner and Gary Rhodes, and is the perfect face for the working mum's model. Dr Sue Bailey, Food Historian and Author Writing and researching about food has always been Sue's passion. She is the monthly food columnist for The Lady magazine, and writes culinary history and local food features for Cambridge Edition magazine. She is an experienced panel member, presenter and chair for lectures, workshops and webinars. In the past, she has led national and European research programmes in workplace learning, consumer health education and food skills. Sue's hidden secret is that she has a quirky alter ego. She appears as the first famous female celebrity chef Fabulous Fanny Cradock. She recreates signature dishes from her 1950s, 1960s and 1970s books and TV shows at food fairs and history festivals.

Andrea's busy baking her favorite no-knead bread with a new-to-her (but almost 100-year-old) international sourdough starter. In honor of National Apple Month, Stefin revisits the Apple Pie Breakfast Cookies introduced in Episode 45. Pumpkin Cake Donuts are a fall favorite, but who can solve the mystery of the disappearing cinnamon sugar? It's also National Cookbook Month, and the duo introduce new recipes to challenge themselves: Victoria Sponge for Stefin, and Valencia Orange Cake for Andrea. Andrea (literally) sings the praises of her key ingredient, distracting Stefin from the most challenging aspect of her cake: The fact that there are no measurements! Finally, Andrea has a review of Ottolenghi's new book, Sweet, and Stefin runs down a list of Preheated listeners' most-loved cookbooks.Bake along with Stefin and Andrea in their baking Facebook group, Preheated. You can find links to recipes on their baking website, www.preheatedpodcast.com. Join the fun!
The idea of City Cottage is simple. Started in the early 2000’s by Diana and Paul Peacock, circumstances meant we had to provide for our family on a very tight budget. Consequently, much of our food was home grown on an allotment. We kept hens and bees, grew vegetables and fruit and learned how to make cheese and sausage and other traditional food.Traditional because our grandparents and everyone before them in our families had more or less to do the same. The week Paul & Diana talk about the famous Victoria Sponge and some of the best cake recipes around. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
