The restaurant was awarded a Michelin star and Glynn went on to win many accolades within the industry. After training with top chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes and Claude Bosi, Glynn travelled abroad to work with well-known Michelin starred chefs in Europe. He went on to help launch Jessica's in July 2003, which was awarded Birmingham's first Michelin star back in 2005. Glynn is now the proud owner of two establishments in Birmingham, Purnell's Restaurant on Cornwall Street, which opened in July 2007 and was awarded a Michelin star in 2009, and Purnell's Bistro & Ginger's Bar on Newhall Street, which opened in September 2012.Glynn has become a household name after taking part in the Great British Menu, winning twice and then later appearing as a mentor. 2022 marks 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne, making Her Majesty the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Royal celebrations have often been associated with food, banquets and street parties, with this year following the script. In May 2022, Jemma Melvin created a lemon and Swiss roll amaretti trifle which beat around 5,000 other entries to be named the official pudding for the Jubilee. In this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we're looking at the traditions and recipes of British Royal celebrations of the past. We ask why some dishes capture the public's imagination, while others don't. We look at the parallels between the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and those that took place at the Queen's coronation in 1953. Today, like then, the celebrations are taking place at a time of hardship for many.  Food prices are rising today as the cost of living crisis deepens. In 1953, we were still a year away from the end of rationing after the Second World War. And in today's society, where you're more likely to get your cooking inspiration from Heston Blumenthal than Her Majesty, we ask: Just how central is food to a modern day Royal celebration? Listen to the full episode to learn the true story of Coronation Chicken, why the Victoria Sponge is so reflective of the time it was created, and find out what treats our guests would rustle up if they were tasked with designing a new Royal dish. Meet the guests Mary Gwynn, Food writer Mary Gwynn was the founding editor of BBC Vegetarian Good Food and subsequently editor of M&S magazine.  She has worked as a consultant editor and trainer for Waitrose for 12 years, and has written three vegetarian cookbooks.  She has appeared on the sofa with Richard and Judy, cooked at the NEC with chefs such as Rick Stein, Brian Turner and Gary Rhodes, and is the perfect face for the working mum's model. Dr Sue Bailey, Food Historian and Author Writing and researching about food has always been Sue's passion. She is the monthly food columnist for The Lady magazine, and writes culinary history and local food features for Cambridge Edition magazine. She is an experienced panel member, presenter and chair for lectures, workshops and webinars.  In the past, she has led national and European research programmes in workplace learning, consumer health education and food skills.  Sue's hidden secret is that she has a quirky alter ego. She appears as the first famous female celebrity chef Fabulous Fanny Cradock. She recreates signature dishes from her 1950s, 1960s and 1970s books and TV shows at food fairs and history festivals.

In this podcast James talks about the importance of building relationships without expectations of trying to get something from the situation. The ‘network is your net worth’ mentality is fine - to a certain point - but most often the people who bang on about that have a limited amount of value to actually bring to those relationships! James uses the example of his blossoming bromance with Gary Rhodes (his forest ever guest on this podcast) as an example of how fruitful relationships can be when built from a position of being genuine.  And here is a link to the brilliant podcast from Rob Dyrdek mentioned in this episode BUILD WITH ROB  And if you want to check out Europe’s leading podcast launch agency - yes James’ business that he is discussing in this episode - go and take a look via  https://www.ultimatepodcastgroup.com/

In 1994 four teenage boys in Sunderland – all students from the same school – died one after another, with their bodies found for the most part in burning sheds or derelict buildings with ligatures around their neck. The police insisted nothing sinister was going on.              A lot of true crime shows will at some point say “this sounds like something out of a horror movie” – but that is a horror movie, right? Tonight we look at the case of Steven Grieveson – aka (but not by us) as The Sunderland Strangler - the only North East serial killer of the modern era. Gareth expresses his love for Bush, Curry and Beer. John solves the thorny problem of how  footballers can continue with their career after prison sentences. Claire believes that the musical career of Ant and Dec is more significant  than the Rwandan genocide. Listeners hear the words “beaver anuses” a lot.Digressions in this episode include: Ensemble charity singles! The death of Stephen Milligan MP! The death of Andreas Escobar and Alan Hansen's startlingly inappropriate response! Gary Rhodes! Alice Beer! Swearing on Farscape! Rednex! Jewish Eggs! Spiderland by Slint (DON'T LISTEN TO IT)! The Elongated Man!  Hans Zimmer!  Everyone Dies in Sunderland explores some of the darkest moments of North East history, and includes jokes. These jokes will never be at the expense of victims or their families and will always be at the expense of people who deserve to be mocked, robbed of their power and shown up for the idiots they really are. If you're easily offended or personally connected to the events we're discussing though, you probably shouldn't listen.  During this episode John suggests that we allow serial killer nicknames if they make the killers sound ridiculous. So Peter Sutcliffe is now “the dangly willy killer” in tribute to his iconic homemade underpants. Any other suggestions? This week on the show - to celebrate the 100th episode of Building The Brand - we go all the way back to the first ever show where we welcomed Uber-successful Health Tech investor Gary Rhodes who honestly, warmly and modestly shares his journey from window cleaner to multi-millionaire high net-worth investor. As well as the 100th show featuring the 1st ever episode, James also explains how Building The Brand came to be, the journey that led to the start of the show and how dinner with our guest Gary changed the direction of James’ life!  In this episode Gary explains how his desired to help improve the lives of others directed him into the health and fitness space, he needed cash for further training which lead him to purchasing the rights to a local window cleaning… this company almost accidentally grew and grew and grew, until Gary found himself with nationwide contracts to some of the biggest companies - but ultimately this business was never going to fuel the passions that lead to him starting it in the first place. He sold the window cleaning brand - which by this time was a big business - and use the proceeds to start investing in businesses that could drive his desire to impact change and improvements in the health of world’s population. In the show he shares: * How he discovers  brands to get involved with * What drove him to leaving a very successful business because of passion * How Gary fulfilled his own need in recent businesses and that’s often the way a good business starts  * What led to Tony Robbins becoming Gary’s business partner * How education of consumers can be essential with taking a new product to market * What to look for in a great business partner * How growing a brilliant business is based on relationships * How targets get reduced if anyone in the team takes their foot off the gas * What family life and entrepreneurship looks like to Gary  * Managing time when you’re running multiple businesses The mission of the show is create a sense of inspiration and aspiration for our community of likeminded go-getters who are the influencers, innovators, creators, makers, builders, crafters and doers who form the next big wave of entrepreneurial success and we think that Gary’s story, journey and vision will certainly do exactly that. Building The Brand - Episode 001 - Gary Rhodes - The Power Of Partnerships Hosted by multiple iTunes Top 10 podcaster James Burtt, Building The Brand is in-depth conversations with the entrepreneurs, founders, marketing and brand experts, PR specialists, CEO’s and CMO’s who have built some of the countries most successful companies and brands. This week on the show we have Uber-successful Health Tech investor Gary Rhodes who honestly, warmly and modestly shares his journey from window cleaner to multi-millionaire high net-worth investor. In the show he shares: * How he discovered Osteostrong - the brand he now acts as International Managing Director for * What drove him to leaving a very successful business because of passion * How Gary fulfilled his own need in Osteostrong and that’s often the way a good business starts  * What led to Tony Robbins becoming a business partner in Osteostrong * How education of consumers can be essential with taking a new product to market * What to look for in a great business partner * How growing a brilliant business is based on relationships * How targets get reduced if anyone in the team takes their foot off the gas * What family life and entrepreneurship looks like to Gary  * Managing time when you’re running multiple businesses The mission of our show is create a sense of inspiration and aspiration for our community of likeminded go-getters who are the influencers, innovators, creators, makers, builders, crafters and doers who form the next big wave of entrepreneurial success and we think that Gary’s story, journey and vision will certainly do exactly that. Guess what's on fire? That's right, the planet is. You can also add ‘The Kitchen' to that flaming hot list. I feel like I've made that joke before. I'd look back and check but I can't. I am a shark and I cannot reverse. This week The TickyOff Boyz utterly fail to deliver an intro to the episode. This is because they were in the pub. Sometimes, these things happen. I'd apologise but to be honest, water meet underside of the bridge. Bygones. Etc. Anyway you don't need an intro when you've got Selin Kiazim in the house* *It's not a house. It's an office. Just for full disclosure. Selin tells all about how she ended up owning and running two (and a half) restaurants, writing a cookbook and appearing on ‘Great British Menu'. There's Peter Gordon at The Providores chat, modernising the food of her childhood discussion and operating in a tricky business environment…..verbals. Meanwhile James drops an enormous jug of Bloody Mary mix on a train platform, Sam explains competitive hot-dog eating contest technicalities and Selin admits that the cooking show that inspired her to start cooking may well have involved a pair of legends known as The TickyOff Boyz of the early nineties, Gary Rhodes and Ainsley Harriot. Gary Rhodes in his spiky-haired prime, delicately basting a filet of beef with foaming butter… Nigel Kennedy in an Aston Villa shirt picking out a heartrending melody on his violin… Les Dennis effortlessly controlling a studio audience with wit, good looks, and pure charm… All masters in their respective fields. Operating at the very top of their games. Providing inspiration, inspiring jealousy, moving humankind forward, showing the way. Proving what is possible with God-given talent and almost superhuman dedication. None even come close to James Reginald Colin Ramsden talking about postboxes on this week's TickyOff. None. It's obviously slightly downhill after a start as incredible as this one but music photographer Edu Hawkins steps up and more than holds his own. He provides ample mouth-created sounds about photographing BB King, Gil Scott Heron, Jarvis Cocker, and perhaps less impressively, Ed Sheeran. There's also New Orleans food discussion, the problem with The Foo Fighters and strange toilets in restaurants. Finally, Sam is very anti reckless activity, James reviews Gloria Trattoria, Edu can't burp and they all decide what they'd want to see if they peeled the skin of their faces off. This is TickyOff and if you don't know what you've signed up for, then read the small print ya phony! This week's episode is sponsored by the Levi Roots of wine dropwine.co.uk

BBC Good Food Show Summer / BBC Gardeners’ World Live - Birmingham NEC 13 - 16 June 2019

Tom is a great character with amazing presence, obvious warmth and an infectious laugh, so it wasn’t a surprise when Tom landed his own TV show. The brilliantly popular BBC2 series Proper Pub Food became a huge overnight success with excellent ratings with Tom’s fan base growing weekly as the 6 part series went on. Accompanying the show Tom wrote his first book of the same title which fast became a best seller. Most recently, Tom has been presenting BBC2’s new series Bake Off Crème De La Crème which saw some of the country’s top pastry chefs compete, creating elaborate pastries and desserts. Tom is also part of the team on BBC2’s The Food Detectives, helping people improve their cooking skills. In 2014, Tom presented his second series, Best Ever Dishes which again proved extremely popular, along with his bestselling book of the same title. Tom also took on the challenge of opening another restaurant, The Coach, which is also in Marlow. The Coach is a relaxed modern pub, open all day, every day serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and pub snacks. The Coach has a no reservations policy and has enabled more visitors than ever to taste Tom’s incredible take on traditional pub food. Tom also took on hosting BBC2’s flagship cookery show Food and Drink. Tom cooked alongside other TV heavyweight chefs, championing seasonable produce and creating dishes accessible to everyone at home every Friday night on BBC2. In 2015, Tom’s latest book, Toms Table was published and topped the best seller charts. It also inspired a special pop-up ‘Toms Table’ restaurant at Harrods Food Hall which saw Tom cooking dishes from the new book as well as favourites from both his restaurants, the pop-up sold out and was a huge success. Prior to having his own show, Tom appeared on shows such as Market Kitchen, MasterChef the Professionals, Saturday Kitchen and has competed and won the main course twice on BBC2’s Great British Menu. No-one else has ever won twice! Tom’s first catering job was a stint as commis chef at Calcot Manor in Gloucestershire. He also worked for Stephen Bull and Gary Rhodes before joining Odette’s in Primrose Hill. After a spell at Monsieur Max in Hampton he moved to Norwich to take over running the Michelin starred restaurant Adlards. He then decided it was time to find his own place taking over a run down pub in Marlow called the Hand and Flowers. The rest is history…
