Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 86-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 22,574 on turnover of $5.6-billion N-T. Shares in Taiwan took a beating, plunging more than 500 points Monday, with selling sparked by steep declines on U.S. markets at the end of last week amid rising worries over the Federal Reserve's next move. The market opened up, but sell-off accelerated in the afternoon session, with weakness seen among other electronics heavyweights, dragging down the Taiex down to almost the day's low at the end of the session. Non-tech stocks moved lower in line with the broader market, with some exceptions in the petrochemical industry, which was boosted by higher international crude oil prices, after the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against Russia's oil industry. Yunlin touts success in waste reduction -- by searching people's trash bags The Yunlin County government says it has reduced the county's overall trash volume by 7 percent after implementing a search policy. The Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau says the county's waste output had risen to around 400 metric tons per day, and the local government has instructed waste management workers to search some residents' trash bags and refuse those that contained food scraps and other recyclable materials. Since implementing the policy, almost 20-thousand bags of trash hve been rejected, out of about 100-thousand. The bureau says Yunlin's monthly trash volume last November was 1,200 metric tons lower than in July, equivalent to (等值的;相等的) around 7 percent less trash per day. The bureau says currently, the county generates 360 metric tons of trash per day, which it hopes to reduce to 340 metric tons by the end of this year. NKorea Test Fires Projectile South Korea's military says North Korea has test-fired at least one unidentified projectile toward its eastern waters in its second launch event of 2025. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday didn't immediately provide (提供) more details. The launch followed North Korea's first ballistic launch of the year last week. The North described that the test involved a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to strike targets in the Pacific as leader Kim Jong Un vowed to further expand his collection of nuclear-capable weapons to counter rivals. Romania Protests Calling for Election Resumption Demonstrations were held in the Romanian capital on Sunday calling for a resumption (繼續) of presidential elections. The election was annulled in December by the Constitutional Court citing the illegal use of digital technology to influence the results. William Denselow reports from Brussels. British Declassified Documents Reveal Spy Details Newly declassified British documents show that Queen Elizabeth II wasn't told details of her long-time art adviser's double life as a Soviet spy because palace officials didn't want to add to her worries. The files about royal art historian Anthony Blunt are among a trove from the intelligence agency MI5 released Tuesday by Britain's National Archives. They shed new light on the spy ring linked to Cambridge University who spilled secrets (洩漏祕密) to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Blunt confessed to espionage in 1964, but according to the files the queen was not given full details until 1973. Her private secretary reported that “she took it all very calmly and without surprise." Blunt was not publicly exposed as a spy until 1979. That was the I.C.R.T. Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and John Cairncross—passed almost 17,000 classified documents to the Soviet Union for 30+ years. The information was so extensive and the volume so large, that Soviet intelligence initially suspected some of it might be disinformation, due to the high-ranking positions these spies held and the access they had. However, much of this intelligence was invaluable, influencing Soviet strategies during pivotal moments of World War II and the Cold War. Join us as we teach you about one of the most notorious spy rings in modern history, The Cambridge Five, and the most prominent member, Kim Philby. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/15minutehistory/support
PREVIEW: #MARKET GARDEN: #MONTGOMERY: Conversation with colleague Gregory Copley regarding the revelation in a soon-to-be-published book that Anthony Blunt, a member of the Cambridge Five and a spy catcher at MI5, discovered the details of Operation Market Garden and passed them to his NKVD handler. It is presumed that the information was then relayed to Moscow and Stalin, who may have subsequently shared it with Berlin. The discussion will explore the possibility that Stalin's motive was to prevent the Allies from crossing the Rhine and reaching Berlin before the Red Army. More details to follow later. 1944 Market Garden

His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. The Second World War was not Hitler's war; it was Stalin's war: Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin's War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east. Hitler's genocidal ambition may have helped unleash Armageddon, but as McMeekin shows, the war which emerged in Europe in September 1939 was the one Stalin wanted, not Hitler. So, too, did the Pacific war of 1941–1945 fulfill Stalin's goal of unleashing a devastating war of attrition between Japan and the “Anglo-Saxon” capitalist powers he viewed as his ultimate adversary. McMeekin also reveals the extent to which Soviet Communism was rescued by the US and Britain's self-defeating strategic moves, beginning with Lend-Lease aid, as American and British supply boards agreed almost blindly to every Soviet demand. Stalin's war machine, McMeekin shows, was substantially reliant on American materiél from warplanes, tanks, trucks, jeeps, motorcycles, fuel, ammunition, and explosives, to industrial inputs and technology transfer, to the foodstuffs which fed the Red Army. This unreciprocated American generosity gave Stalin's armies the mobile striking power to conquer most of Eurasia, from Berlin to Beijing, for Communism. A groundbreaking reassessment of the Second World War, Stalin's War is essential reading for anyone looking to understand the current world ordeR.

PREVIEW: #STALIN: Conversation with author Sean McMeekin about his book "STALIN's WAR: A New History of World War II," which presents Stalin as planning to set the capitalist states of Europe and America against each other. The book explores how Stalin aimed to use the American aid he received as a bulwark of his empire. This perspective is possibly underlined by the recent revelation that Stalin approved his spy, Anthony Blunt, at MI5 to inform Berlin about Operation Market Garden, in order to prevent the Allies from reaching Berlin first. Sir Anthony Blunt, esteemed art historian and a favourite of the Royal family, was publicly revealed as a Soviet spy on 15th November, 1979, when Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher confirmed he had been part of the "Cambridge Five", a group of double agents who secretly passed sensitive information to the Soviet Union. Despite his confession to MI5 in 1964, Blunt continued his association with the royal household, working as a surveyor of the Queen's pictures until his retirement in 1972. The response in Parliament included disbelief and accusations of deliberate cover-ups to protect Blunt, leading, eventually, to his knighthood being rescinded. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how Blunt's privilege facilitated his double-dealing at the very highest levels of British society; ask whether his homosexuality influenced his relationship with Guy Burgess and his willingness to betray the British establishment; and explain how a fictional work - and some trigger-happy lawyers - led to his downfall… Further Reading: • ‘Art historian who spied for the Soviet Union' (The Guardian, 1979): https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/nov/17/anthony-blunt-spy-sentenced-1979 • ‘Anthony Blunt: confessions of spy who passed secrets to Russia during the war' (The Telegraph, 2009): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/5889879/Anthony-Blunt-confessions-of-spy-who-passed-secrets-to-Russia-during-the-war.html • ‘Art historian, professor, writer, spy – the extraordinary story of Anthony Blunt' (The British Academy, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Z4lucQar0 Love the show? durée : 01:00:00 - Les Nuits de France Culture - par : Albane Penaranda - Histoires d'espionnage soviétique : les "Cinq de Cambridge" racontés par Alexandre Adler Dans une série consacrée aux "Histoires d'espionnage soviétique", Alexandre Adler consacrait deux épisodes aux "Cinq de Cambridge". The revelation that spies working for the Soviet Union, recruited at Cambridge University in the 1930s, had deeply penetrated the British intelligence and diplomatic systems causes shockwaves throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s as more and more either defected or were exposed. The fascinating figure of Guy Burgess was at the heart of the scandal, and his secret flight to Moscow in 1951 stunned the world, shaking confidence in Britain in its Cold War ally, the USA. Andrew wrote a much acclaimed biography of Burgess and this week he talks Phil through his remarkable story, and that of the other key spies. And they discuss whether Burgess was the most important of them all. They're joined by one of Britain's greatest ever writers on intelligence, Nigel West. Nigel met with Anthony Blunt, one of the most important Cambridge spies, and gained access to previously secret Soviet files. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stalins-Englishman-Lives-Guy-Burgess/dp/1473627362 www.nigelwest.com Andrew Lownie.twitter.com/andrewlownie Phil Craig.twitter.com/philmcraig You can now get in touch with the show...team@podcastworld.org (Place 'Scandal Mongers' in the heading please) This show is Part of the PodcastWorld.org network.
This is part 2 of the Hess Enigma. What happened to Hess? Was he murdered? Was it Hess? We also examine the roles of other characters such as Tancred Borenius, the Polish leader Sikorski and others. There is also Anthony Blunt the Soviet spy who carried out dirty business for the Royal family. There are so many secrets and rumours regarding the Hess flight, and he was prevented with communicating with anyone after he was locked up, so it is unlikely that the truth will ever come out.

An excerpt from THE LEONARDO GULAG by Kevin Doherty Narrated by Edison McDaniels “[The Leonardo Gulag is] vivid, fresh, gripping, clever. This historical thriller set in a gulag in Stalin's Russia thoroughly propelled me. With appearances from Stalin himself and Soviet spy Anthony Blunt, it feels authentic on every page. I felt I was there.”—David Morrell, New York Times best-selling author “[The Leonardo Gulag is] an extraordinary novel with a fresh and unique premise—one that draws the reader into a world that's both clever and imaginative. Bravo. Bravo.”—Steve Berry, New York Times best-selling author “The Leonardo Gulag is a bold, bracing, and brilliant take on the human side and costs of [the Cold War]. Kevin Doherty's starkly original tale of prisoners forced to forge da Vinci masterpieces lives up to pop culture classics like Stalag 17 and The Great Escape, not to mention the best of Leon Uris and the Louis L'Amour classic Last of the Breed. This is a historical thriller of the highest order; smart, savvy, and sensational.”—Jon Land, USA Today best-selling author “This relentless tale of cruelty and survival provides a sobering look at Stalin's Russia. Fans of Kafkaesque historical fiction will be satisfied.”—Publishers Weekly Kevin Doherty grew up in Northern Ireland, graduated from Queen's University Belfast, and lives in England, near Windsor Castle, with his wife, Roz. His professional background is advertising and marketing. He has worked for a number of U.K. and international companies and has advised business and government agencies in Britain and Europe. This week's show is called "Life Experiences - Anthony Blunt." Listen to Opal Bailey in "Live with Necee" weekly as she brings to you, topics, people, and ideas that help you think more about Life, Living, and Loving.
In November 1979, Margaret Thatcher exposed the distinguished art historian Anthony Blunt as a former Soviet spy - part of the infamous Cambridge Spy Ring who traded secrets with Moscow during the Second World War. Blunt's unmasking provoked a media outcry that turned him into a national hate figure. In this 10-Minute Talk, President of the British Academy David Cannadine discusses the background to this extraordinary story. And he reveals how the British Academy itself got caught up in the public furore, leading to a showdown at its Annual General Meeting forty years ago this month, on the question of whether Blunt should be expelled from its membership.'A Question of Retribution? The British Academy and the Matter of Anthony Blunt', edited by David Cannadine, was published on 23 July 2020.Image: Anthony Blunt at a press conference, 20th November 1979 © Central Press / Stringer / Hulton Archive / Getty ImagesTranscript: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/podcasts/10-minute-talks-art-historian-professor-writer-spy-the-extraordinary-story-of-anthony-blunt/

He was one of a group of double agents recruited at Cambridge University who passed vital information to Moscow. The BBC's Gordon Corera explains the scandal which shook the British establishment. Plus the Black Panther Party's free breakfast programme; the abolition of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy towards LGBT troops in the US military; Ethiopian troops in South Korea; and memories of celebrated children's author CS Lewis. Donald Maclean was one of the most treacherous and productive – for Moscow spies of the Cold War era and a key member of the infamous “Cambridge Five” spy ring, yet the complete extent of this shy, intelligent, and secretive man's betrayal of his country and his friends, family and colleagues, has never been explored—until now. Drawing on a wealth of previously classified files and unseen family papers, A Spy Named Orphan: the Enigma of Donald Maclean (W.W. Norton, 2018) meticulously documents this extraordinary story. In the first full biography of Maclean, author and publisher, Roland Philipps unravels Maclean's character and contradictions. Like many members of his generation, Maclean became infatuated with Communism during his school days, even before his time at Cambridge. The very model of a perfect diplomat, he rose through the ranks of the diplomatic service rapidly, never arousing suspicion of his treasonous double life. He married an American woman despite his sexual ambivalence and increasing antipathy to the United States. He was prone to alcoholic binges and general erratic behavior, that should have blown his cover, yet they never found their way onto his record. A sworn enemy of capitalism, he had access to some of the greatest secrets of the time, transmitting invaluable intelligence to his Soviet handlers on the atom bomb and the shape of the postwar world. In a brazen escapade, he successfully eluded the British authorities to defect to the Soviet Union, where he worked and lived unrepentantly for the next thirty years. Philipps offers memorable portraits of Maclean's and his coconspirators—Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, and Anthony Blunt—as well as the gifted Russian spymasters of the period. A gripping tale of blind faith and fierce loyalty alongside dangerous duplicity and human vulnerability, Philipps's narrative will stand as the definitive account of the mysterious and elusive man first codenamed “Orphan” for many years to come. A must read for anyone interested in this tales of spying, intrigue and treason. Charles Coutinho holds a doctorate in history from New York University. Where he studied with Tony Judt, Stewart Stehlin and McGeorge Bundy. His Ph. D. dissertation was on Anglo-American relations in the run-up to the Suez Crisis of 1956. His area of specialization is 19th and 20th-century European, American diplomatic and political history. Claudia Cragg (@KGNUClaudia) speaks here for @KGNU with Roland Philipps, about his new book, the first full biography of one of the twentieth century’s most notorious spies. Donald Maclean. Maclean was one of the most treacherous spies of the Cold War era and a key member of the infamous "#CambridgeFive" #spyring, yet the full extent of this shrewd, secretive man’s betrayal has never been explored—until now. Drawing on a wealth of previously classified files and unseen family papers, A Spy Named Orphan meticulously documents his extraordinary story. Roland Philipps unravels Maclean’s character and contradictions, informed by a domineering father in a childhood at once liberal and austere. Maclean became infatuated with Communism during his school days, even before his time at Cambridge. A model diplomat, he rose through the ranks of the British Foreign Office rapidly, never arousing suspicion of his chilling double life. He married an American woman despite his sexual ambivalence and increasing antipathy to the United States. He was prone to alcoholic binges that should have blown his cover, yet they never found their way onto his record. A sworn enemy of capitalism, he had access to some of the greatest secrets of the time, transmitting invaulable intelligence to his Soviet handlers on the atom bomb and the shape of the postwar world. Maclean was a spy who loved and loathed the role. In a brazen escapade, he successfully eluded the incredulous authorities to defect to the Soviet Union, where he worked and lived unrepentantly for the next thirty years. Philipps offers memorable portraits of Maclean’s coconspirators—Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, and Anthony Blunt—as well as the gifted Russian spymasters of the period; a vibrant evocation of Cambridge and London between the wars; colorful descriptions of Maclean’s postings in Paris, Cairo, and Washington, D.C.; and a riveting re-creation of the tense international code-breaking operation that ultimately exposed him. A gripping tale of blind faith and fierce loyalty alongside dangerous duplicity and human vulnerability, Philipps’s narrative will stand as the definitive account of the mysterious and elusive man first codenamed "Orphan."
