This All That's Jazz episode is a conversation with three diverse and virtuosic musical masters - renowned saxophonist Jeff Coffin, venerated drummer Jordan Perlson and bass legend Viktor Krauss - have joined together for a nine-track debut of all original music that's been described as “a thrilling sonic odyssey that showcases undeniable musicianship and boundless artistic expression.” Coffin, Perlson and Krauss first started playing together in 2020. The connection between them was evident instantly. During the pandemic, the three Nashville based musicians formed a social pod, and made playing together a regularity as long as they were safe to do so. Using this unexpected time, the trio decided to record at Krauss' home studio to officially document this special collaboration, eventually settling on seven compositions and two solo works. The result is their first album as a trio, self- titled ‘Coffin /Perlson/Krauss.
Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. This Quoircast episode is brought to you by Deadly Faith Podcast: a true crime podcast that explores the world where religion and crime collide. In this episode we chat with Jennifer KnappJennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, author, speaker and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. Knapp received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with The Los Angeles Times calling her “a rising star” and People Magazine describing her as “an uncommonly literate songwriter.” With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial success, Knapp walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album Letting Go, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. Set Me Free followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a memoir, Facing the Music: My Story, published by Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album Love Comes Back Around, produced by Viktor Krauss, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with Americana style rootsy arrangements. As the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity, her unique position created opportunities for national dialogue, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 Knapp founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues. You can follow Jennifer on:Facebook Twitter Instagram TikTok YouTubeYou can find all things Jennifer Knapp related on her websiteYou can purchase Jennifer's book Facing the Music and her music at her online storeYou can connect with This Is Not Church on:Facebook Instagram Twitter TikTok YouTubeAlso check out our Linktree for all things This Is Not Church relatedPlease like and follow our Quoircast Partners:Heretic Happy Hour Messy Spirituality Apostates Anonymous Second Cup with Keith The Church Needs TherapyIdeas Digest The New Evangelicals Snarky Faith Podcast Wild Olive Deadly FaithJonathan Foster Sacred Thoughts Holy Heretics Reframing Our StoriesEach episode of This Is Not Church Podcast is expertly engineered by our producer The Podcast Doctor Eric Howell. Fourteen years after their Grammy-winning debut, Raising Sand, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss followed up with Raise the Roof—which was nominated for three more Grammys. Now on tour, the duo also has a new band that includes bassist Viktor Krauss, guitarist JD McPherson, and utility player Stuart Duncan. But before they hit the road, Krause, Duncan, and McPherson—and their techs Paul Ackling and Kevin Devogel— invited the PG team to a rehearsal at Soundcheck Nashville for a look behind the gear curtain. Here's a sampling of what our team of John Bohlinger, Chris Kies, and Perry Bean saw. Watch the Rundown for the whole picture.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.
Bassist/songwriter/producer/composer Viktor Krauss has a resume that is noteworthy both for its quality and its quantity. He's had long tenures with artists as dissimilar as Lyle Lovett and Bill Frisell, toured as part of the recent Robert Plant & Alison Krauss "Raise the Roof" tour, and has a handful of fascinating solo releases. Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. This week on the show is the great mandolin player, singer and songwriter Sierra Hull. Sierra is a monster player, and while she's still really young, she's been making records of her own for over 15 years now. The latest one, called “25 Trips” came out right around the pandemic, so her touring was curtailed for a while, but she's back at it now in full force, playing with her band and also with Cory Wong and Bela Fleck, being a major part of Bela's “My Bluegrass Heart” album and shows earlier this year. I was really interested in talking to her about that because I can't imagine how crazy that must be to be sitting in a room full of your heros that you grew up listening to and learning from and suddenly they're your peers and you're right in the mix with all of them. In the bluegrass world, that project doesn't get any heavier - Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Stuart Duncan, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle - they're all involved, and it's a great album. Sierra has made some great solo albums with Allison Krauss and Bela Fleck producing, and on the latest one, “25 Trips”, she's co-producing with a killer engineer named Shani Gandhi. It's definitely rooted in bluegrass, but steps out into some more experimental territory as well with some innovative sounds and production ideas. The crew on this album includes Justin Moses, Viktor Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Paul Franklin, Jano Rix and lots more. So we got to talk about how she approaches making music, and all about how she prepares as a side-person for some of the heavy gigs she's involved in these days.Sierra is constantly out on tour and you can keep up with what she's doing and where to see her at: sierrahull.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
Viktor Krauss is an accomplished musician with several solo albums as well as being a long time member of Lyle Lovett's Large Band. He's also played on records by Dolly Parton, Natalie Merchant, Sarah Jarosz and many, many more. Right now, Viktor is on the road touring with Robert Plant and his sister Alison Krauss. Viktor tells me about recording and touring with Robert and Alison and what he's been enjoying while being on the road, like some deep dish pizza in Chicago. Viktor Krauss joins me on the show this week. Viktor has been in Nashville for many years, but originally hails from Illinois. Viktor is one of the most recognizable players of the upright bass around and has developed a signature sound that is both massive and somehow understated at the same time. I first came to be aware of Viktor through an incredible string of albums with Bill Frisell, starting with the “Nashville” album, but have come to know his extensive body of work which includes stints with his sister Allison Krauss, and a long-standing gig in Lyle Lovett's band. Enjoy, share the episode, and don't forget to leave us a review, and subscribe to the show.

From the 1940s to the 1960s, Eva Garza’s voice could be heard singing Mexican rancheras throughout Latin America. Though her story and music is largely forgotten today, her genes live on: Garza's great-niece is the Texas singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez. In 2016, she released Lola, a bi-lingual record that combines her own Americana sound with the echoes of her family’s musical heritage, courtesy of a crack band led by Luke Jacobs that includes guest guitar polymaths Bill Frisell and David Pulkingham, bassist Viktor Krauss, and others. Carrie Rodriguez plays music from Lola, in-studio.

In this week’s episode, I have the extreme honor of sitting down with singer songwriter and Kansas native, Jennifer Knapp. We talk about her coming out process and the choice to return to the public eye after years “underground.” We also talk about her adventures in self-discovery and how the Enneagram can help! Here’s more about Jennifer: Jennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, author, and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases Kansas (debut 1998, Gold-certified), Lay It Down (2000), and The Way I Am (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and again in 2010. Knapp has received critical acclaim for her human approach to the divine, with the Los Angeles Times calling her "a rising star" and People Magazine describing her as "an uncommonly literate songwriter." With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial successes, Knapp walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album Letting Go, which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. Set Me Free followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a memoir, Facing the Music: My Story, on Howard Books/Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album Love Comes Back Around, produced by Viktor Krauss, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with rootsy arrangements. As the first major artist known by the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBT identity, her unique position has created opportunities for dialogue at churches and universities through her organization Inside Out Faith and on the TEDx stage at University of Nevada. A true Renaissance woman, Knapp recently completed a master's degree in theological studies from Vanderbilt Divinity School. Connect with Jennifer Here: www.jenniferknapp.com And look! Anyone remotely plugged into 90’s contemporary Christian music has probably heard of Jennifer Knapp. This week Jeff has a wonderful conversation with her about everything from early years in the Christian music industry to her current music and work with LGBTQ people of faith. MORE ABOUT JENNIFER KNAPP’S NEW ALBUM Jennifer Knapp has experienced enough chaos and turmoil in her life that she could write about it on every album. Instead, she made Love Comes Back Around, a collection of songs that focus on what really matters. Funded through a PledgeMusic campaign and produced by Viktor Krauss, Knapp’s latest features 10 compelling new tunes exploring love — but not the easy kind. These are love songs for grown-ups who have come a few miles. “It’s not just sex, it’s not just physical relationships,” Knapp says. “It’s hard work. It’s loss, it’s forgiveness, it’s a lot of things wrapped up in one.” Love Comes Back Around pairs her fearless songwriting and strong, expressive voice with rootsy arrangements: there’s growling guitar and a snakey beat on opener “Straight Road,” subtle horns layered into the background on “Perfect Pardon” and the mournful interplay of piano and acoustic guitar on “Roll Over Me.” Knapp’s vocals are the centerpiece of the title track, which she says is “a look at the mundane things in our lives, between who makes the bed and who doesn’t, and what makes you miss your partner when she’s gone.” In other words, the real stuff. Knapp knows plenty about that. Love Comes Back Around is her sixth album in a music career with two distinct sections. After releasing three contemporary Christian albums in the late ’90s and early 2000s, she took a long break from music and moved to Australia before resuming her career in 2009. The following year, she came out as gay and released Letting Go, her first mainstream album. Set Me Free followed in 2014, in conjunction with a memoir, Facing the Music: My Story. “At this point in my life, I’ve been in a relationship for well over a decade, I’ve had a public controversy and had to weather the storm over my sexual orientation in public, I’ve had to deal with what my faith does or doesn’t mean to my music,” Knapp says. After all that, she was ready to focus on something else. “I started thinking about a universal approach to what love is, and not just the sappy part.” Knapp’s return to music included moving back to Nashville, where she was based earlier in her career. “I’ve experienced Nashville in two ways,” she says. “At the heart of my stardom, so to speak, when things were really busy and I toured a lot, the irony was that even though I made my home here and worked professionally here, I wasn’t home enough to enjoy the camaraderie.” This time around, she’s home enough to have become part of a creative community. That’s how she connected with Krauss: friends of Knapp’s who knew the producer’s work recommended him. After Knapp listened, she invited Krauss out for ice cream and asked him to work with her on Love Comes Back Around. “If you don’t deliver music that creates the emotional space to dive into the lyrics, a lot of the subtlety is lost, and Viktor really understands that,” Knapp says. “He’s seen everything and played with everybody and has all these phone numbers, but he’s actually really humble and sincere, and that allows an artist like me to have confidence in my own work.” When she’s not occupied with music, or doing advocacy work on behalf of LGBTQ people of faith through her Inside Out Faith organization, Knapp is working on a master’s degree in theological studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. It’s not what she thought she’d be doing now when she was a young singer first starting out, but life has a way of carving its own unexpected path — and so does love. “There’s something beautiful in all of that,” Knapp says. “That’s why we call it love. And if it weren’t hard sometimes, we wouldn’t appreciate the beauty. And if it weren’t beautiful, we wouldn’t be willing to keep going through the hard parts.” RELEVANT LINKS Jennifer Knapp (Musician, Activist) Reaching Out by Henri Nouwen (Book - Amazon Affiliate Link) Inside Out Faith (Non-Profit Organization) Jennifer Knapp Discography Kansas (1998 Album) Lay It Down (2000 Album) The Way I Am (2001 Album) The Collection (2003 Album) Jennifer Knapp Live (2006 Album) Evolving EP (2009 EP) Let it Go (2010 Album) The Hymns of Christmas (2012 Album with Margaret Becker) Set Me Free (2014 Album) Love Comes Back Around (2017 Album) YOUR SUPPORT Thank you for listening to Irenicast. Producer Lee Townsend is my guest on the show this week. Lee is a producer in the truest sense of the word. He’s not a performing musician, never has been, but has always been deeply into music and he brings a philosophy and easy going nature to sessions that make people rally around and perform their best. Lee is best known for his decades-long relationship in the studio and as manager for Bill Frisell, with whom he has made many records, earned Grammy Awards and countless other accolades, but he has also made some amazing records for artists as diverse as Dave Holland, Viktor Krauss, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Louden Wainwright, Carrie Rodriguez, and many more. He is an artistic member of the group Floratone, which is an experimental collaboration with Frisell, Matt Chamberlain, Tucker Martine, and Lee. He has also worked as VP of A&R for Verve/Polygram and as General Manager of of ECM Records in the USA. I thought Lee would be a great addition to the series here as someone who brings an intense love and passion for music to the table and has a long history of great records under his belt. He is a true Music Maker and Soul Shaker!
