Sam Sadigursky is widely recognized as one of the most talented clarinetists and reed doublers of his generation. He has released eleven acclaimed albums as a leader and appears on over sixty recordings as a sideman, including numerous Grammy-nominated and Grammy Award-winning projects. A member of the Philip Glass Ensemble, he has also toured and recorded with Brad Mehldau, David Byrne, Bruce Hornsby, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, the Mingus Orchestra, and U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. This five-album series reflects on the Borscht Belt—the once-thriving Jewish resort region that helped shape 20th-century American culture—while also exploring contemporary experiences of immigration and Jewish identity. The Solomon Diaries Volume IV .https://open.spotify.com/album/6aueHALAzKJf0eDoo048ek?si=LVmkM3hhQiSBUJJBb1egAwThe Solomon Diaries Volume V https://open.spotify.com/album/6dkN03M2qai0xXNC38VTSa?si=bBjX0IVXQQyJO4J1hjKtVA

The boys warned you things were going to get eclectic, but they may have outdone themselves this time, as the selections run the gamut from a jazz trio reimagining Bach preludes to a cutting edge big band arranger/composer tipping the cap to Cab Calloway to a night it the Georgia woods and is what we're hearing even music? Plus, a thoughtful look at what happens when one of the better known ensembles of the eighties loses a pivotal member and expands its horizons past its signature format. Adam Birnbaum – PRELUDES; Marion Brown – AFTERNOON OF A GEORGIA FAUN; WSQ - METAMORPHOSIS; Darcy James Argue – DYNAMIC MAXIMUM TENSION. Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. mikebaggetta.com https://mainsteamstopvalve.com Tickets to OCT 7th mssv at Beachland Tavern Cleveland OH https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/13205278/mssv-c-level/

Disfrtad. Repertorio: 1. Jono El Grande - Bach's Beach (Melody Of A Muddle Mason) 2. Tomeka Reid Quartet - Niki's Bop ( Old New) 3. Gal And Osh - Liran Donin's 1000 Boats (8 Songs) 4. Camembert - Untung Untungan 2.0 ( Schnörgl Attahk) 5. Bobby Previte - Last Stand/Final Approach (Rhapsody) 6. Simone Graziano Frontal - Afror (Sexuality) 7. Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores - Black Ice (Sister Death) 8. Stabat Akish - Sprouts (Nebulos) 9. Darcy James Argue's Secret Society - Missing Parts (Brooklyn Babylon) 10. Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between song and solo, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. The press says this approach is “…beguilingly atmospheric…” (Time Out New York) and that “Baggetta's music is quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes, his playing can sound almost static, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air.” (Hartford Courant) Baggetta's most recent release is the album Everywhen We Go, his second album with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Mike Watt on the BIG EGO label. He also leads the band mssv, is a post-genre power trio featuring the iconoclastic rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt. They have just released their self-titled debut studio album, Main Steam Stop Valve, on BIG EGO Records, following up 2020's Live Flowers album on Striped Light Records, recorded live in Philadelphia, PA and Northampton, MA (with special guest J Mascis), as well as 3 limited edition 7” releases recorded solely over quarantine, featuring guest artists Petra Haden and Nels Cline. After completing their first full US tour in spring 2022 mssv recorded their second full length album for release next year. This band grew out of Baggetta's first album for BIG EGO, Wall of Flowers, which featured a reimagining of his music alongside bassist Mike Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta has had the pleasure to work all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. Everywhen We Go - the new album from Mike Baggetta / Jim Keltner / Mike Watt - is available for pre-order HEREOfficially out Nov. 18 on BIG EGO Records, you can reserve your copy of the limited edition 1st vinyl pressing of 500, featuring a hand-stamped foil number, and get an immediate download of the title track/single now, and the rest of the album on release day. Ingrid Jensen is the 2019 recipient of the Jazz Journalists Trumpeter-of-the Year award. She is constantly in demand with tours internationally - both with her own groups and also with jazz orchestras such as Maria Schneider (1994-2012) and Darcy James Argue (2002-present). In addition to her accomplishments as a trumpeter and composer, she is also currently the Interim Associate Dean and Director of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. We begin our conversation by asking Ingrid to trace the arc of her career, from her beginnings in music and her musical family to studying at the Berkeley School of Music, moving to Copenhagen and then back to New York, eventually moving to Austria to teach at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. In the course of our conversation, she talks about how playing the same tune in a different country can be different.
Software updates are often blockbuster events, but sometimes they are smaller affairs that just make working in the programs appreciably better. Such is the case with the latest updates to Finale and Dorico. Philip Rothman and David MacDonald recap the Finale v27.2 update, which featured new a jazz template and document style designed in collaboration with Darcy James Argue. We also explain why it's important Finale is now a "universal" application for Macs, like Dorico 4 is, which means that it can run natively on Apple's newest M1-powered machine. We then turn our attention to the Dorico 4.0.20 update, and highlight a few of our favorite improvements in this update. We discuss why the jump bar, the seemingly low-tech text-only way of working in Dorico, might be the secret to working faster in Dorico now that it returns better search results. We also discuss improvements to Dorico's Key Editor and look ahead to what's already been promised to come in the next update. More on Scoring Notes: Dorico 4.0.20 update brings fixes and improvements; iPad version also updated Darcy James Argue jazzes up Finale with “style” Finale version 27.2 adds new jazz template, native Apple silicon support
Darcy James Argue returns to Scoring Notes to talk with Philip Rothman about his role in creating the fully revamped SMuFL-compliant jazz default file and document style in the Finale v27.2 update. Darcy's a composer, bandleader, and, as pertains to today's topic of conversation, world-renowned music preparation expert, particularly when it comes to Finale. Darcy's a stickler for detail, and he tells us all about the process of overhauling the Finale Jazz defaults, with more than two decades' worth of items on his wish list. One of those items is the addition of lower case characters to the JazzText font — something that users have been asking for since it was first introduced by Rich Sigler back in the 1990s. It's not just an aesthetic preference; when used in chord symbols, they make it much easier to read and understand. The chord symbols in the new SMuFL Finale Jazz Font Default are all made up of individual characters (not single-character JazzChord glyphs) and can all be typed directly into the score, and Darcy discuss the process of stripping down the original font into its most basic elements and reconstituting them to be used in as many chord symbol combinations as was practical to include. There are also many differences under the hood in Document Options, such as tie and slur appearance, tuplet bracket appearance, margins, and layer settings, and Darcy tells us about the inspiration for those — including everything from Judy Green manuscript paper to the artful copyists of the golden age like Clinton Roemer and Bert Kosow. We also talk about what this means for Finale users now and in the future. More on Scoring Notes: Finale version 27.2 adds new jazz template, native Apple silicon support Finale version 27.1: SMuFL burrows deeper Finale version 27 review: SMuFL and MusicXML 4.0 support Cooperating with chords in Finale DJA's Notes: Left-align chord symbols A few brief thoughts about the size of music paper
Drummer Jared Schonig is much-loved both in the New York jazz community and amongst Broadway musicians. He took on the gargantuan, brilliant task of releasing a double album, “Two Takes Volumes 1 & 2”, on Anzic Records in September 2021. The recording features quartet renditions of his music, followed by big band arrangements of the same repertoire by eight of the great arrangers working today-Jim McNeely, Miho Hazama, Darcy James Argue, Alan Ferber, Laurence Hobgood, Brian Krock, John Daversa and Mike Holober. The result is musically exciting and impressive, bridging the gaps between big band jazz sounds, progressive rock and contemporary jazz.
