The FBI-orchestrated murder of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in 1969 remains one of the most singularly evil crimes of the 20th century, and it's a story about which most Americans know very little. The 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King, is a heavy, detailed consideration of the events that led to Hampton's death, focusing mainly on the figure of William O'Neal, a small-time thief coerced by the FBI into becoming a confidential informant working within Hampton's organization. As Justin and I discuss in this episode, the film puts us in the center of the complicated moral calculations that defined 1960s radicalism, and asks hard questions about the price of loyalty, freedom, and revolution. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jeffrey Haas. A long time attorney for the People's Law Office in Illinois, Haas represented Fred Hampton and member's of Chicago's chapter of the Black Panther Party. Haas talked with Hampton and heard him speak against Racism on a regular basis. Hampton had such an impact that Haas remained dedicated to fighting to expose the government-led, White Supremacist conspiracy to assassinate the young chairman. He compiled the years of deceptions and courtroom battles in his 2010 book, The Assassination of Fed Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther. We'll discuss the role of FBI informant William O'Neal, a black male recruited to spy on black people when he was 19-years-old. O'Neal is accused of drugging Hampton the December night in 1969 when the Panther leader was killed in his sleep. He admitted to providing a detailed floor-plan of the premises. Haas describes O'Neal as a "moral eunuch." We'll discuss the years of lies to conceal this unjust murder and how Fred Hampton's assassination relates to other incidents of Chicago history, like the murder of Emmett Till and the Torture of black males by former Police chief Jon Burge. We'll be sure to ask for Mr. Haas's views on the film Judas & The Black Messiah as well as his upbringing in Racist Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Haas got riled when Gus referred to his longtime White comrade and former C.O.W.S. guest Bill Ayers as a criminal. Ayers, as a part of The Weathermen, was complicit in the bombing of the Pentagon and the US Capitol building. Today, let's talk about integrations. Most software companies these days want to be a “platform”. Part of that play is to build APIs, document them, and facilitate other companies building integrations as well. But many of us have unique workflows and so have to build our own. Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 American biographical drama film about the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O'Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lil Rel Howery, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne, and Martin Sheen also star. The film is directed and produced by Shaka King, who wrote the screenplay with Will Berson, based on a story by the pair and Kenny and Keith Lucas. A Fred Hampton biopic had been in the works for several years, with both the Lucas brothers and Will Berson writing and shopping screenplays individually since 2014. Berson's version almost got made with F. Gary Gray directing, but, when that fell through, King was hired to direct. The cast joined in 2019, with the blessings of Hampton's family, with filming taking place that fall in Ohio. Judas and the Black Messiah premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 1, 2021, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 12, simultaneously in theaters and digitally on HBO Max. The film was lauded by critics, who praised King's direction, the performances (particularly Kaluuya's and Stanfield's), and its timely themes. The film earned six Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Stanfield, and won Best Supporting Actor for Kaluuya and Best Original Song ("Fight for You"). For his performance, Kaluuya also won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

How cool is that?

In this episode, the Buzzards interview writer-director Shaka King. In just under a decade Mr. King has amassed an impressive resume, including a string of films that have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and several highly-acclaimed television series episodes. His latest film, JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH, is the hard-hitting examination of the last years of the enigmatic revolutionary-activist Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton and his subsequent betrayal at the hands of a colleague, William O'Neal, who was conscripted by the FBI to do their bidding. Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for both leads, Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield, Best Cinematography and Best Song. The interview focuses on Mr. King's early life growing up in Brooklyn, his influences in literature and cinema and the trajectory of his career as we discuss several of his films. Our guest is Shaka King, the director, co-writer and producer of “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The film tells the story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and FBI informant William O'Neal, whose intel led to Hampton's killing by law enforcement in 1969. King talks about why he felt a responsibility to make the movie, how one day of shooting felt like stepping into a time warp, and making the jump from indie filmmaking to big studio production. The new Hollywood film “Judas and the Black Messiah” is based on the lives of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and the person who betrayed him, FBI informant William O'Neal. The film's director Shaka King has credited documentaries for playing a key role in his research. One of his main influences was “Eyes on the Prize II” (1990) that scored the journalistic feat of interviewing O'Neal after he had gone into a federal witness protection program. Pure Nonfiction host Thom Powers interviews four members of the “Eyes” team - directors Louis Massiah and Terry Kay Rockefeller along with researchers Noland Walker and co-director Bennett Singer. They describe how they got O'Neal to talk, why questions still linger about his reported suicide, and the legacy of the Black Panthers.Further resources:- Learn more about our guests: Louis Massiah (executive director, Scribe Video Center), Terry Kay Rockefeller, Bennett Singer (co-director, Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin and Cured), Noland Walker (co-programmer, ITVS's Independent Lens)- Watch all 14 episodes of Eyes on the Prize on Kanopy This podcast conversation touches upon episode 9 “Power!” about the Black Panthers and especially focuses on episode 12 “A Nation of Law?” both co-directed by Louis Massiah and Terry Kay Rockefeller.

This week on the latest episode of the BIG show, the story of the rise of Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and the mole, William O'Neal who infiltrated his sphere, leading to his assassination is brilliantly captured in Shaka King's powerful film, Judas and the Black Messiah.BlackfilmandTV's Wilson Morales joins Charles Kirkland, Jr. and host Tim Gordon as we discuss this poignant film, plus we remember one of the founding members of The Supremes, Mary Wilson. We'll have all that and more on Episode 442 of Keeping It Reel with FilmGordon.
On the latest episode of Reel Reviews, we discuss the biographical drama which details the betrayal of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party in the late 1960s, at the hands of William O'Neal. Directed and produced by Shaka King, from a screenplay written by King and Will Berson, based on a story by King, Berson, and Kenny and Keith Lucas. The film stars Black Reel Award nominees Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield as Hampton and O'Neal, respectively, with Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, and Martin Sheen in supporting roles.
Fred Hampton's cathartic words “I am a revolutionary” became a rallying call in 1969. As chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Hampton demanded all power to the people and inspired a growing movement of solidarity, prompting the FBI to consider him a threat and to plant informant William O'Neal to infiltrate the party. JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH not only recounts Hampton's legacy and the FBI's conspiring but also gives equal footing to the man who became infamous for his betrayal—highlighting the systems of inequality and oppression that fed both of their roles.
