The Clare branch of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service is warning further hospital cancellations in The MidWest are highly likely unless urgent supply issues are addressed. The IBTS has issued a pre-amber alert, which means all Irish Hospitals have been asked to conserve their use of blood. An additional 2,000 donations are needed over the next month to restore adequate blood supplies and clinics will take place at the West County Hotel in Ennis on Wednesday 18th and 23rd and in Kilrush Community Hall on Thursday 24th. Healthcare campaigners are calling for a permanent end to uncertainty surrounding patient care in Clare and the MidWest. It follows the gradual restoration of outpatient appointments of elective and day surgeries at Ennis, Nenagh, St. Johns, University Hospital Limerick and Croom Orthopedic following three weeks of scheduled care deferrals. The measure was introduced as part of an "escalation plan" to alleviate overcrowding at UHL and the UL Hospitals Group says the resumption of care is being managed within available resources and is subject to daily review. Ennis MidWest Hospital Campaign Spokesperson Hillary Tonge has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it's unaccpetable that longstanding patient appointments could be cancelled at anytime due to pressure on the Emergency Department.
A Regional Health Forum West member says unacceptable overcrowding has become the norm at University Hospital Limerick. The HSE took the decision last Wednesday to defer scheduled care at University Hospital Limerick as well as Ennis, Nenagh, St. John's and Croom Hospitals due to spiralling overcrowding following the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Trolley numbers reached as high as 127 last week compared to 80 on the same day last year. Regional Health Forum Committee Chairperson and Shannon Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan says the facility is in crisis response mode day in day out.

This week we had the pleasure of talking with Erika Hoagland! Erika was previously the editor for Ultrarunning Magazine and today she still writes a column called I Am An Ultrarunner as well as she owns a cookie company (she makes the most beautiful cookies), she is a mom and she trains for and races ultras. We chat about the joys and insanities of motherhood, her journey through child birth and her consistent racing through the years. Erika ran Western States this year after using the pregnancy deferral when she had her daughter in 2017. She explains her experience, how it works and why it's so important in our sport to allow moms the freedom of not having to choose between racing and growing their family. Briefly, here's how it works: if you raced your way into Western States or had your name drawn in the lottery but you are pregnant or get pregnant before the race and feel like it's not the best time to be running 100 miles, you can defer your race to another year when you're more ready to run without any punishment of loosing your place in this race that is so difficult to get into. This allows mothers to do what is best for their bodies and families (Hallelujah). Erika shares about her race at Western States this year and the fears, anxieties and stresses she carried with her in training and the race itself. She didn't have the race she hoped for and it brought about some heavy emotions that she has processed and thankfully shared with us because her words were so relatable and life-giving to the rest of us (at least for Stef and I!) As humans, and especially as moms, we can tend to compare our past selves to our current selves and cringe when we don't feel like we're “back” to where we once were athletically. We can intertwine our self-worth with our race times and be saddened by unmet expectations. But Erika is moving forward and embracing the runner she is right now, ditching the stress of outcomes and finding joy in ultra running. We loved our time with Erika and are so inspired by her! Ep.#11 [THEME FIVE] As we continue down this ESOP mini-series, we want to do some serious myth-busting by diving even deeper into the technical details on how ESOPs work. This two-part episode is all about deal structures, 1042 tax deferrals (similar to 1031 exchanges), seller’s potential to capture future equity growth via the form of warrants (similar to rolled equity), how to handle key executive compensation plans, and the shareholder benefits of transforming a company into an ESOP. In this episode, you will learn how an ESOP offers great tax benefits and how you can prepare to maximize your tax deductions before switching to an ESOP. Also in this episode, you will learn about the interview process from a trustee’s standpoint and about warrant options to ensure that the best interest of the employees are at the forefront of the deal without screwing over the primary seller. In part one of this episode, Keith Apton, the managing director of UBS’s ESOP Capital Group, talks about some false narratives with ESOPs, such as, “If I sell to an ESOP, I won’t get as much cash for my business.” He then talks about the 1042 tax code and discusses how converting the business from an S Corp to a C Corp could defer the gains at the time of the transaction and potentially indefinitely through estate planning. Keith tees up the topic of warrants and how they act as a form of rolled equity that can be as lucrative as the rolled equity in a private equity sale–except in an ESOP sale, the owner still has control over the direction of the company. Keith finishes this segment of the episode by sharing a story of what he thinks would change if S Corps had the same tax benefits as C Corps. In part two of this episode, Miguel Paredes, president of Prudent Fiduciary Services, is a trustee and shares stories about how a trustee keeps the employees’ best interests in mind without screwing over the seller, and even more so, being a partner that can help everyone get what they want out of the business during the transaction, and most importantly, in the future. Miguel goes deep into the mechanics of how warrants and SARs (stock appreciation rights) plans can be used to reward key executives with additional future equity based on the value they help create. Do you find your AP team stuck with getting accounts payable entered and paid on time that they are unable to focus on doing other finance processes in the company? This results from inefficient bookkeeping workflow, skepticism in getting an accounting professional to work remotely, and transitioning to a paperless accounting system that affects your ability to close your month faster. Numerous transactions posted in your general ledger will come from purchase invoices or invoices from purchase orders. Suppose those are entered to the wrong accounts, incorrect amounts, or even the wrong dimensions — it can take a lot of fixing at month's end because first, you need to review and find all of those errors. It is, therefore, crucial to have an accounts payable employee who is properly trained on what can be done with the Business Central/NAV system because a lot of people don't know what the functionality is. An accounting team that doesn't know what to do with the system will be ineffective and hurt your business in the long run. ✔️A BC/NAV feature that not many people use is Deferrals. NVS Accounting Manager Cari Corozza shares that this is her favorite function that immensely improves how users can process accounts payable. This helps eliminate the number of journal entries made at month end by doing it upfront on the purchase invoices. ✔️ Save time, frustration, and tons of paper.
