In the second episode in a special three-part series of Destination on the Left episodes from the National Tour Associations Travel Exchange in Reno, I'm sharing more insights from the group travel industry. I'm excited to share their thoughts on key trends and challenges as we move into 2023. In this episode, you'll hear from these extraordinary leaders: Peter Johnson, Manager & Market Development at Tourism Nova Scotia Richard Arnold, President at Atlantic Tours Limited Tillie Youngs, Sales Manager at Visit 1000 Islands Anjuli King, Director, Domestic Group Tour & Entertainment Sales at Visit Savannah Debra Asberry, President & Founder at Women Traveling Together, Inc. Heather Egan, Director of Leisure & International Sales at Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Travel and Tourism Insight from The National Tour Associations Travel Exchange In my interviews at the NTA, I talked with tour and travel professionals about how dynamic and resilient the group tour industry is. I asked each guest to share trends, challenges, and the future outlook for the tour industry from their viewpoint — you will find a lot of similar themes running through their answers. Peter Johnson — Manager & Market Development at Tourism Nova Scotia Peter discussed the number one issue they are facing in the industry right now and how Tourism Nova Scotia are moving through it. He shares what they're doing to combat labor shortages with innovative ways to bring people back to the industry, including working closely with partner organizations. Richard Arnold, President at Atlantic Tours Limited The impact of COVID-19 on the group travel industry included reducing numbers on tour departures for health and safety reasons. Richard describes how this pivot has led to Atlantic Tours developing an offering of small group departures and why he believes that offering individual, unique experiences are among the key trends of 2023. Tillie Youngs — Sales Manager at Visit 1000 Islands Tille describes the impact straddling two countries has on her destination marketing organization. She discusses their notable collaborations on both sides of the St. Lawrence River and why they have always seen themselves as a two-nation destination. We also talked about the opportunities to collaborate and work as closely with international partners. Anjuli King — Director, Domestic Group Tour & Entertainment Sales at Visit Savannah There are so many great destinations that have a huge amount to offer groups, and Savannah is undoubtedly one of those places. Anjuli shares some of the trends she is seeing right now in the group tour industry, including the popularity of their black history tours. She also discusses why she believes that Georgia as a whole has opened up to new opportunities in the last couple of years. Debra Asberry — President & Founder at Women Traveling Together, Inc. Debra tells me about why she founded Women Traveling Together and describes the ethos of their exclusively small group women tours and why they embed a tour leader to manage group dynamics and just show guests a wonderful time. Debra also gives me her word to describe the NTA Travel Exchange, which is ‘ready' and dives into how it relates to relationship building within the group travel and tourism industry. Heather Egan — Director of Leisure & International Sales at Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Heather and I discuss some of the problems that have become evident in the group travel niche over recent years. She shares how her organization balances the needs of the group tourism industry with the requirements of individual travelers and why they remain committed to finding the best way to accommodate groups and maintaining key relationships in the sector. Moving Through Challenges These brilliant travel professionals join me in exploring key trends and challenges for 2023 and how the COVID-19 pandemic has informed what's going on in the group travel niche right now. My guests also describe the NTA Travel Exchange in just one word, and some of the key themes you'll hear in this episode center on partnership, invigorating the industry, and strong connections. As an introvert it's really difficult to travel alone and when you do, you'd want to have someone who shares the same interest as you. Karen really wanted to travel but can't find friends who share the same time as her or who wants to visit the places she’d likes to. Though traveling alone is possible but she doesn't feel safe going anywhere all by herself especially if she doesn't know the area. All this changed after she discovers Women Traveling Solo Together on the internet. She decided to give it a try and there she met a lot of women from different backgrounds and personalities - widowed, divorced, extrovert, introverts - all with the desire to travel. People who she could take photos with and share memories while jotting them down on her notebook, something to look back on along the road. Traveling to different countries taught her not to jump to conclusions and just take a moment to assess situations before making quick assumptions. It also taught her not to take a lot of things for granted and appreciate what other cultures are going through.   Key Takeaways: Karen, not a first time solo traveler, shares how she looked for opportunities to travel after her retirement and how women traveling together caught her eye. When you travel, you experience a lot of interesting things and enjoyable activities in an unconventional way. You have to be flexible to use that particular method in order to adapt to the culture and tradition of that specific place. It's good to have a group to remind you of the do's and don'ts when you're in a particular country. It's better to travel with people whom you could relate to and shares the same interest as you. Her favorite trips are the ones where she laughed a lot but people are the best part!     Mentioned in This Episode: Women-Traveling.com Women Traveling Together on Facebook Email: wttmail@women-traveling.com   Leave a Review: Did you like this episode? Welcome to the very first episode of the Women Traveling Solo Together Podcast. The purpose of this podcast is to share real stories and helpful tips from women who've traveled solo with other solo women travelers instead of going alone. Our very first guest is Debra Asberry, founder of Women Traveling Together. Debra’s story began more than 20 years ago when she had a desire to raft the Colorado River but could not find a travel partner in her immediate circle. Fast forward today, the company has grown to running over 80 trips all around the world and has built a solid community of women who travel not just for the growth factor but also for the sheer fun and the ability to go see the places they have been dreaming about their entire lives. In the coming episodes, we will be sharing stories from trip leaders and travelers. We’ll talk about everything from the where they have gone, why they've gone and the fun stories that they've had along the way. I can't wait to share what's coming up next on the Women Traveling Solo Together Podcast. Key Takeaways: Debra shares how Women Traveling Together started from a dream trip she wanted to take 20 years ago How a chance conversation with another woman who had the same desire to travel led her to find other women who had the same desire for travel From the first international trip in 1998, Women Traveling Together is now running over 80 trips all around the world Solo women travelers are more socially accepted now as compared to 20 years ago Women are so much more ambitious now about where they want to go, what they want to do, and are more willing to create lifelong friendships Solo traveling has nothing to do with marital status - a woman could be married, single, divorced, or widowed. It is now easy for women to turn their dreams of travel and make it a reality. Debra shares what a trip leader is, the process of becoming one, and the responsibility it entails Mentioned in This Episode: Women-Traveling.com Women Traveling Together on Facebook Email: wttmail@women-traveling.com Leave a Review: Did you like this episode? Debra Asberry is the owner of Women Traveling Together, a company built on her own personal frustration when she could not find a travel partner to do a once-in-a-lifetime trip with her. Women Traveling Together cultivates an environment where solo women can experience new things without a travel buddy, in a safe and secure way. The company was started in 1997, and has created an experience where even the most inexperienced traveller can have a fun time without feeling pressured to keep up with the pros.   Key Takeaways: *What is Women Traveling Together about, and how did it get started? *Debra and Women Traveling Together will be hosting around 70 tours throughout 2017. *The company started because no one wanted to travel with Debra on a rafting trip 20 years ago. *Debra knew she couldn’t have been the only one who felt this way. She wanted to share her experiences with someone. *The mainstream tour operators, at the time, did not want anything to do with solo travellers. *You can talk to the other women in the group before your trip to get a better feel for what they are and aren’t comfortable with while traveling. This makes the group activity great for both experienced and inexperienced travelers. *How does Debra work with introverts and the lone wolves? *Some people have strict definitions of what solo travel is. Both Jennifer and Debra do a bit of debunking! *You can be as alone as you want to be on any of these trips! It’s just up to you how you want to spend that time. *Jennifer loves what Debra is doing because women who are going through a midlife transition are able to rediscover themselves and redefine their stories in a safe way. *What are some of the qualities Debra looks for in a tour leader? *Debra has 12 employees on staff and 29 tour leaders that are on the front line and who ensure that the tour runs smoothly. *What’s next for Debra and her company? *A company like Debra’s makes it so easy for you to get up and go, and live life on your own terms.   Mentioned in This Episode: Transformviatravel.com Transform via Travel on Facebook @GoSoloLive on Twitter Email: Jennifer@TransformviaTravel.com   Connect with Debra: Website Call Debra: 1-800-795-7135   Leave a Review: Did you like this episode?
