The EU's financial system operates in the shadows, with institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB) wielding immense financial power, but who actually benefits? In the latest episode of EU Watchdog Radio, we sit down with Yanis Varoufakis - former Greek Finance Minister, Member of the Greek Parliament, and relentless critic of financial elites - to dissect the EU's economic machinery. From the European Investment Bank's role in fueling corporate capture to the EU's relentless push for competitiveness at the expense of social and environmental justice, we dig into the flaws of a system designed to benefit the few. In an exchange with Alexandra Gerasimcikova, Varoufakis unpacks the implications of Europe's lack of political will to mobilise large scale public funds to build a green economy, prospects for Europe to compete with global actors in the field of artificial intelligence, the dangers of Europe's growing military spending, and what bold changes are needed to shift power back to the people.Tune in for an unfiltered conversation that exposes the reality behind EU finance.
Yascha Mounk and Yanis Varoufakis discuss whether the dominance of large cloud-focused tech companies signals the arrival of a new economic order. Yanis Varoufakis is an economist, politician, and the former Greek Minister of Finance. Varoufakis is the author of Another Now: Dispatches from an Alternative Present and Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. In this week's conversation, Yascha Mounk and Yanis Varoufakis discuss whether the extraction of "cloud rent" by Big Tech heralds a return to an earlier, pre-capitalist form of commerce; the technological and economic future of Europe (and of the European Union); and the geopolitics of a new cold war between China and the United States. City Lights and Melville House present Yannis Varoufakis in conversation with Peter Maravelis, discussing "Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism" by Yannis Varoufakis, published by Melville House. Purchase here: https://citylights.com/topographies/technofeudalism/ Perhaps we were too distracted by the pandemic, or the endless financial crises, or the rise of TikTok. But under cover of them all, a new and more exploitative system has been taking hold. Insane sums of money that were supposed to re-float our economies after the crash of 2008 went to big tech instead. With it they funded the construction of their private cloud fiefdoms and privatized the internet. Technofeudalism says Yanis Varoufakis, is the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and is the greatest current threat to the liberal individual, to our efforts to avert climate catastrophe—and to democracy itself. It also lies behind the new geopolitical tensions, especially the New Cold War between the United States and China. Drawing on stories from Greek myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power, and, ultimately, what it will take overthrow it. Yanis Varoufakis is an economist and academic, a bestselling author, and the former finance minister of Greece. He is a co-founder of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025. His books include "And the Weak Suffer What They Must?," "Talking to My Daughter About the Economy," "Adults in the Room," and "Foundations of Economics." Praise for "Technofeudalism:" “Blending intellectual memoir, history, and economic and technological history, Varoufakis creates an intimate atmosphere that is a genuine pleasure to read … It's hard to read this book and deny its power … illuminating.” — The Washington Post “An outstanding economist and political analyst.” — Noam Chomsky "Arresting … an ambitious thinker and a lively writer … Varoufakis is right that we are in thrall to digital platforms, who hold our data hostage and prevent us from switching to 'a competing cloud fief'" ― The Times (London) Originally broadcast via Zoom on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Welcome to technofeudalism. The owners of big tech have become the world's feudal overlords—replacing capitalism with a new system that defies democracy and rewrite the rules of global power. But this is no dystopian story—as visionary economist Yanis Varoufakis argues, this is our world today. In conversation with Ash Sarkar, Varoufakis illuminates the dark underbelly of this new system—and reveals what we can do to thwart it. Learn more about your ad choices. Emma and Chloe take on Yanis Varoufakis' new book, Technofeudalism. Varoufakis argues that capitalism is dead, ushering in a new mode of production he calls technofeudalism. He claims that the system we live under today is more like the feudal system which predated capitalism: the main economic activity today is the collection of rent by big tech "cloudalists". These tech giants, like Amazon and Google, are now our feudal overlords, while the rest of the capitalist class has been reduced to mere "cloud vassals". Workers are disempowered, a minority of us are "cloud proles", while the majority of the population are "cloud serfs", unwittingly creating value for the cloudalists through our clicks, likes, purchases and posts. Chloe and Emma offer a critique of this theory, arguing that Varoufakis' "cloudalists" are just monopolies, which have been a stable feature of capitalist markets for centuries. We defend the idea that the modern working class is a powerful force because they create the profits, not rent, of the capitalist class. We also offer our own theories for why Varoufakis and others like him are so keen on proclaiming the death of capitalism every few years. Who profits from our online lives? How is all our clicking and scrolling giving tech companies such unprecedented power and wealth? This isn't capitalism, argues Yanis Varoufakis: it's technofeudalism. Maverick economist Varoufakis argues that we're all serfs now, paying rents to the big tech "cloudalists” (cloud + capitalists). He talks about why we don't actually own the music and movies we buy online; what Don Draper knew about behaviour modification; and how a Star Trek future could save us, and democracy. The memoirs of former German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble were recently released in Germany. As expected, Greece features heavily. All the key moments of the crisis and its main actors are sketched in his memoirs, from the times Grexit was genuinely on the table, to his dealings with prime ministers Papandreou, Samaras, and Tsipras, and finance ministers Papaconstantinou, Venizelos, and Varoufakis. Xenia Kounalaki, a journalist and weekly columnist at Kathimerini, which acquired exclusive rights of publishing excerpts from the book in Greek, joins Thanos Davelis for an inside look into the Greek financial crisis through the lens of one of its main protagonists. Capitalism's twin pillars - markets and profit - have been replaced with big tech's platforms and rents. Meanwhile, with every click and scroll, we labour like serfs to increase its power. Welcome to technofeudalism. Drawing on stories from Greek Myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power and ultimately what it will take overthrow it. On today's show, Dirk Pohlmann will discuss Yannis Varoufakis's analysis of the developments in the global economy since 1971, with Ola Frithiofson, a Palme social democrat who was in charge of foreign policy in the youth organization of Swedish social democracy. They will explore Varoufakis's analysis, which draws a map of the worldwide economic development after the USA dropped the gold standard in 1971. Varoufakis argues that we are in a new phase of feudalism, where a few oligarchs govern, a concept he refers to as "cloud capitalism." This discussion will touch on current developments in Scandinavia and Germany, where the left is in decline and without clear orientation. The conversation will explore whether Trump-style politics is seen as a cure and if there's a need for an open-minded approach in the midst of this tectonic geopolitical shift.

The past weeks have seen a shift in Western involvement in the war between Ukraine and Russia. In a dramatic U-turn, Germany, the US, and the UK massively upgraded their military assistance to Ukraine, agreeing to send the country 100 tanks on top of billions in war aid. While Germany's foreign minister admitted for the first time: “We are fighting a war against Russia”. Meanwhile, DiEM25's Yanis Varoufakis was in Cuba, where he delivered a speech arguing for a very different approach: that Europe and countries around the world should reject military blocs and massive weapons deployments, and instead unite around a New Non-Aligned Movement. It's been almost a year since Putin illegally invaded Ukraine. With both sides preparing for springtime offensives, and tens of thousands of deaths on both sides, it's time to re-assess what's really happening here. Are “weapons the way to peace”, as the head of NATO argued in Davos this week? Are we dangerously goading a nuclear-armed nation in a proxy war with the West, while arms makers profit? Or is there a greater geopolitical game afoot? Our panel, including Varoufakis and Julijiana Zita, investigate.

On October 27, Elon Musk took over Twitter in a 44-billion-dollar deal. The world's richest man promised to make the platform's content moderation rules less arbitrary, more transparent, and to make the “digital town square” a haven for free speech. Since then, it's been an eventful few weeks. Half of the company's staff was fired, impersonators took advantage of a new account policy to sow chaos and confusion, prominent accounts were banned and unbanned. And regulators – and even other Big Tech companies like Apple – are threatening to clamp down on Twitter due to concerns about hate speech. Some argue that these are just the growing pains of a platform in dire need of change and that oligarchs with a commitment to free speech like Musk are preferable to those with arbitrary and opaque moderation (or censorship) policies. Others say that Musk's “commitment” to free speech is nothing but smoke and mirrors hiding a right-wing agenda, or that he's just a mercurial billionaire with no grand plan at all. Still others – among them our own Yanis Varoufakis – see Musk as the latest member of a new ruling class, eager to turn us into 21st-century serfs using the power of cloud capital. What's the truth? Varoufakis, Juliana Zita, Mehran Khalili, and the rest of our panel debate. Join us live and send us your questions and comments!
Yanis Varoufakis is an academic economist and politician. He's a member of Greek Parliament,Founder and Secretary-General of MeRA25, a left-wing political party, and famously served asMinister for Finance in Greece in 2015. He subsequently wrote a book about the experience calledAdults in the Room (2017), about how the EU stymied his attempts to renegotiate Greece's debts inthe aftermath of the financial crisis. Varoufakis was elected to Greek parliament and appointed Finance Minister in January 2015 byAlexis Tsipras, in the midst of the Greek government-debt crisis. Varoufakis led negotiations overGreece's bailout conditions with the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and theEuropean Central Bank, but failed to agree terms. Varoufakis resigned from government andparliament in August 2015, despite a referendum indicating popular support for his stance.Varoufakis founded MeRA25 in 2018, under whose banner he returned to parliament in 2018. Varoufakis has authored numerous books on the Financial Crisis, austerity and debt, including TheGlobal Minotaur (2011), And the Weak Suffer What They Must? (2016), Talking to my Daughterabout the Economy (2017) and Adults in the Room (2017), as well as primers on modern economicsand Game Theory. Varoufakis holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Essex, has held posts at the University ofCambridge and the University of Sydney among others, and was Professor of Economic Theory at theUniversity of Athens. Varoufakis is a self-described ‘erratic Marxist'.
Is Capitalism dead? Are we in what Yanis Varoufakis calls "Techno-Feudalism" ? Or are just moving to a new stage of neoliberal capitalism, such as "Platform Capitalism" (a term coined by Nick Srnicek in his book Platform Capitalism)? In this episode of the 1DIme Radio podcast, I am joined by Ed from the Podcast called "A New Conversation" which you can find linked below. Ed and I have done multiple podcast together related to Political Economy and in this episode, we analyze Yanis Varoufakis's bold claim we are no longer in Capitalism, but a new system called "TechnoFeudalism.' Varoufakis made this claim in his viral speech with Slavoj Žižek. You can find the link to a clip of it below: https://youtu.be/Ghx0sq_gXK4 In this podcast, we also discuss the book "Capital is Dead' by Mckenzie Wark and ponder if Marx's analysis of capitalism is still relevant in today's age of platform capitalism. Commentators on the war in Ukraine seem to have come to a consensus: public figures have a moral responsibility not to challenge anything other than the Russian narrative. This rejection of balance in favour of propaganda poses a problem for political thinkers like Yanis Varoufakis, who has been accused of 'Westsplaining' and being a Putin apologist in the last week alone. To give this controversial conversation a chance, Varoufakis joined Freddie Sayers for a wide-ranging discussion about Western pressure on Russia and finding a space for debate in what feels like a binary moment. Yanis Varoufakis is the former Finance Minister of Greece, professor of economics at the University of Athens, co-founder of the Democracy in Europe Movement, and member of the Greek Parliament. The Guardian describes him as "a motorcycling, leather jacketed former academic and self-styled rebel who took pleasure in winding up the besuited political class." He calls himself an "erratic Marxist," and has written economics textbooks, a memoir, and popular explainers of economic ideas. But now he has produced a novel: Another Now: Dispatches From an Alternative Present. Another Now is not a typical work of fiction. It is a novel of ideas, more like one of Plato's dialogues than an airport potboiler. Varoufakis draws on the tradition of leftist utopian fiction seen in 19th century works like William Morris' News From Nowhere and Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward. Those books tried to show readers a plausible depiction of what a socialist society might look like. In Another Now, Varoufakis is doing something similar: he shows us what our existing 21st century world might look like if the economy operated very differently and capitalism was done away with. He imagines a different timeline in which Occupy Wall Street had won and Wall Street itself had been consigned to the dustbin of history. But it's not quite right to describe this work as "utopian." Varoufakis is trying to do something extremely pragmatic: to show, using his academic training in finance and economics, that things that seem impossible are actually quite technically feasible. The attack on socialists generally is that their schemes are unworkable, and that without big banks and a class of wealthy capitalists, there could not be a dynamic, innovative economy. Varoufakis uses this story to show that this isn't true, and to explain in detail the concrete workings of a possible post-capitalist economy. If you're not used to novels that contain long descriptions of alternative banking systems, Another Now may be a challenging read. But it's exciting because it tries to seriously answer the question: "What would a realistic alternative to the capitalist economy look like?" In Varoufakis' "other now," the fruits of society's labor are not owned by capitalists, but by the people who do the work. There is some inequality, but there is a "democratic economy" in which corporate tyranny has been eradicated. Banks are public, not private, and poverty is eliminated. It is said that these days, the cramping of our imaginations has meant that it is "easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism." Varoufakis invites us to imagine the end of capitalism in our own time. The medium of fiction has allowed Varoufakis to include characters who are highly skeptical about whether this economy is possible, and who have to be convinced over time to believe in it. Another Now wants to speak to critics of the socialist project, and to show that the seemingly most insurmountable obstacles to eliminating capitalism (maintaining innovation and incentives, financing new projects, etc.) are actually easily solved problems. The most substantial difficulty is the creation of a political movement with the power to bring the necessary changes about.Another Now poses a serious challenge to capitalist dogma and offers an inspiring vision that should energize the left. In this conversation, Varoufakis and Current Affairs editor in chief Nathan J. Robinson discuss the novel and why a well-functioning socialist economy is more feasible than people assume. Warning: it gets a little bit heavy on the economics and it may be useful to read up on the history of the socialist calculation debate before diving in. The phrase "Astonishingly, There Is An Alternative!" is taken from Another Now, where it is a counterpoint to Margaret Thatcher's infamous dictum "There Is No Alternative."The interview Nathan did with the authors of People's Republic of Walmart is available here.
