Financial freedom is something we should all be striving for. Our parents taught us to be practical and get a good, stable job. But life isn't always stable, and if we are going to be bad ass feminists who do what we want with our lives, we need to be financially free. Financial freedom means leaving your cheating husband without worries and about bills, it means fully funding your maternity leave to spend time with your newborn, and it means taking a calculated risk on your time and not anyone else's. This week's guest is a good friend of mine who has done all this and more, and she's going to show you how you can do it too.    Jannese Torres is an award-winning Latina Money Expert. She became an accidental entrepreneur after a job loss led her to create a successful Latin food blog, Delish D'Lites. Now, she helps her clients and listeners build successful online businesses that allow them to pursue financial independence and freedom. Jannese is on a mission to educate marginalized communities on topics like entrepreneurship, investing, and financial independence through her personal finance podcast, "Yo Quiero Dinero." Her new book, Financially Lit!, was published by Grand Central Publishing on April 30, 2024. Order your copy at financiallylitbook.com  Launched in 2019, Yo Quiero Dinero® is an award-winning personal finance podcast for Latinas and people of color. The Yo Quiero Dinero® Podcast educates and empowers listeners on personal finance topics like entrepreneurship, financial independence, building generational wealth, investing, and money mindset through guest interviews & solo episodes.   In this week's episode, my long-time friend Jannese Torres will be catching me up on all her latest adventures, all while sharing what financial freedom can do for you. Whether it's getting yourself out of a bad situation or setting yourself up for a good one, you need to be financially free. No matter what situation you're in now, it is possible!  Follow Jannese on: Website: www.yoquierodineropodcast.com  IG: @yoquierodineropodcast  Pinterest: @dineropodcast  YouTube: @YoQuieroDineroPodcast  Twitter: @dineropodcast  TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdB1ydrw  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/yo-quiero-dinero  Follow Erika on: Instagram @‌theerikacruzTikTok @‌theerikacruzLinkedIn Website: http://www.theerikacruz.com How to work with Erika: Join the waitlist for the Courage Driven Latina program here. Hey everyone! Lauren has been having quite the summer, and with a couple of trips, buying/renovating a new primary, and a move we're doing a replay this week. Fear not, though, this is our most popular episode of the last couple of years so if you haven't listened yet, you'll love it. If you have listened, you may just love it again. Show notes: Athena got into the personal finance content creation world to help the Latina community (and everyone) learn along with her. She's passionate about helping her community because of the wage and income gaps present. Athena discusses the importance of diversifying income streams, as well as her investment portfolio. Since she literally wrote the (for dummies) book on budgeting, of course Lauren and Athena dove deep into this topic. The first method they talked about was zero based budgeting. The second was the 50/30/20 method, Lauren's favorite. The third budgeting method discussed was the cash envelope method, Athena's favorite. Finally, they talked about the pay yourself first budget, which is often not thought of as a budget at all! She offers tactical tips for sticking to a budget, like having groceries delivered. Athena also recommends an accountability partner, which can even be anonymous. Everyone should have a budget because it's the foundation on which all personal finance goals are based. About Athena: Athena Valentine Lent is a finance columnist for Slate and the author of Budgeting for Dummies (Wiley, 2023). Her writing has appeared in BuzzFeed, Prudential, The College Investor, GOBankingRates, Money Under 30, among other places. Her personal finance blog, Money Smart Latina, won the Plutus Award for "Best Personal Finance Content for Underserved Communities" in 2020 and was nominated for "Blog of the Year" in 2022. When she's not working, you can find her reading a Stephen King novel with her main man, a polydactyl cat named Harrison George. Building a business to improve your money choices Did you know that a woman's right to get a credit card without the signature of a man is only 50 years old? It's true. Until the passage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 financial institutions could discriminate against women who didn't have a male cosigner. The right for women to get a business loan without a male cosigner is even later—1988.  For women, having money can be especially important, but everyone can benefit from starting a business for income stability and a shot at a better life. Owning your own business can also facilitate: Leaving a bad job or just getting a better job Walking away from a toxic relationship Moving to a better situation Build an emergency fund Even if you don't plan to use a business to replace a day job, having a side business or other type of income diversity can expand your choices. It can be part of your financial independence journey. In Episode 98 of Your Leadership Legacy, Tina Paulus-Krause welcomes back the indomitable Araceli Esparza to share her inspirational story of resilience and leadership. Araceli takes us through her transformative journey, from her beginnings as a first-generation Latina professional to becoming a renowned author and founder of her own organization. Listen in as she discusses the lessons learned from "playing it small" during the pandemic, and how this period served as a powerful catalyst for her to emerge with a sharper focus and renewed strength. Araceli's tale is one of unapologetic pursuit of goals, underscored by the cultural anthems that fuel her drive for success. This conversation delves into the profound impact of mentorship, the influence of community organizations like United Way on career development, and the vital practice of leadership that contributes to a meaningful legacy. Tina & Araceli also explore the multifaceted world of entrepreneurship and the hurdles faced along the way. From navigating the complexities of securing loans and grants to the significance of a clear vision and a supportive team, Araceli sheds light on the systemic economic challenges, such as the gender wage gap, particularly affecting communities of color. The narrative then shifts to personal growth, the overcoming of cultural pressures that deter seeking help, and the importance of community support in dispelling the stigma around it. Furthermore, they celebrate the empowering initiative in the Midwest that uses storytelling and financial wellness workshops to close gender and racial wage gaps. We talked about her incredible journey to financial independence, breaking free from traditional paths and the importance of redefining success and wealth. Jannese opened up about her experience being laid off from her corporate job and realizing she needed to be her own safety net. We discussed the importance of representation and seeing ourselves reflected in success stories, the influence of Bad Bunny and Puerto Rican culture, and the cultural baggage that comes with money. She also got real about the emotional side of building wealth, especially the guilt that can come with achieving success when your community is struggling, as well as the impact of toxic relationships and the importance of protecting your wealth using prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Jannese's story is about so much more than just dollars and cents. It's about being true to yourself, breaking down barriers, and building a better future for yourself and your community. Welcome to [Podcast Name]! In today's episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Jannese Torres from Yo Quiero Dinero. Jannese Torres, the brilliant mind behind Finnacially Lit, joined us to share her inspiring journey. Growing up in an immigrant household, she experienced firsthand how money conversations were often nonexistent. In many Latino families, financial education takes a back seat as the focus remains on day-to-day survival. Despite being the largest minority group in the United States, the Latino community continues to grapple with cultural and systemic barriers hindering wealth accumulation. As a first-generation Latina, Jannese Torres understands these challenges intimately. She pursued the conventional American Dream, becoming the first woman in her family to earn a college degree, climb the corporate ladder, and secure a six-figure paycheck. However, despite achieving societal markers of success, Torres found herself discontent and unfulfilled. It became evident that the conventional notions of money and success were misleading. Driven by a desire for genuine fulfillment and autonomy, Torres embarked on a journey to redefine wealth on her own terms. She courageously veered away from the prescribed path, embracing entrepreneurship and seeking financial freedom. Join us as Jannese Torres shares her insights, experiences, and the invaluable lessons she's learned along the way. Get ready to be inspired to pave your own path toward financial literacy and empowerment.
