In an age where the complexities of healthcare often obscure the straightforward paths to wellness, one man's dedication to truth and simplicity brings us back to the essentials of human health. In this episode of The Health Feast (Listen on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube), Dr. Rak is joined by Jason Gootman, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, certified nutritionist, and certified exercise physiologist. He's known for his refreshingly honest approach to health and well-being. Jason has profound insights into lifestyle medicine that challenge the prevailing norms of the healthcare system. He advocates for a model as straightforward as caring for a houseplant. Jason's philosophy is rooted in salutogenesis, which focuses on promoting health and well-being rather than merely treating disease. During our conversation, Jason shares his personal journey that shaped his professional ethos—a journey marked by early struggles with body image and excessive exercise, leading to his transformative approach to balanced health. His story is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and holistic well-being. Jason's holistic approach to wellness coaching integrates psychological motivation, intrinsic self-worth, and the practical implementation of healthy habits. He highlights how establishing a harmonious relationship with oneself is crucial in actualizing a life of wellness, and he advocates for a compassionate, needs-based approach to health. Our discussion also delves into Jason's views on the healthcare industry, prompting us to reconsider the conventional approach to health and wellness practices. This conversation bridges the gap between complex medical systems and the innate simplicity of living well. Jason's articulate, thoughtful dialogue offers not just food for thought but a veritable feast for the soul, encouraging us all to embrace a lifestyle that genuinely nurtures health and happiness. Prepare to be inspired and enlightened by Jason Gootman's visionary perspective on health, wellness, and the journey to a more harmonious life. Takeaways Taking care of the inside and outside are concomitant and interconnected. Identifying needs and taking action to meet those needs leads to a sense of harmony with oneself. Real self-love involves engaging in behaviors that truly benefit one's well-being. Framing healthy behaviors as gifts rather than chores enhances motivation and enjoyment. Taking small steps, building self-identity, and celebrating small wins are key to sustainable behavior change. A new system that focuses on holistic wellness is needed, and the public plays a crucial role in driving this change. The current healthcare system needs to change to prioritize prevention and lifestyle medicine. Health coaches can play a crucial role in making behavior changes and addressing the root causes of chronic diseases. Lifestyle medicine emphasizes self-harmony and well-being, which is often overlooked in traditional healthcare. The shift towards lifestyle medicine requires patient participation and the normalization of guidance and support. Have you ever had a session with a practitioner who just couldn't be bothered to get to heart of matter with you? Or had your concerns be dismissed by a health professional? It's frustrating, to say the least, and it's extremely common in so many industries. In this episode, Vicki + Jo talk about the current state of operations under a Pathogenesis, problem-focused, paradigm. One where all focus seems to be on what is “wrong” with us, the never-ending hamster wheel of healing + self-improvement, and how this way of operating doesn't really get anyone anywhere. You'll also discover the antidote to Pathogenesis, which is Salutogenesis and how it goes above and beyond a holistic outlook into the depths of what it means to thrive as a whole and sovereign being. They also discuss unconscious and cognitive biases and how that affects our behavior and interactions with others, what we can do to become aware of our biases, and how to create more flexibility in our behavior, our nervous system, our emotions, and our beliefs. Ready to stop living from the neck up? In a hyper-vigilant state of endless thought loops? Listen to this excerpt from my Salutogenesis for Your Soul event and start integrating the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical parts of you for stressless success. Our four bodies are interconnected. That's why it's so important to be attuned to how you physically feel instead of always trying to push through. The stress response causes us to navigate the world from a state of fear. Salutogenesis is a way to generate health by sending the physical body cues that it is safe and can relax. All five aspects (sense of coherence, self-efficacy, relaxation response, prospect and refuge and biophilia) are important to include in your lifestyle. Salutogenesis resets the nervous system and allows the body to focus on regeneration and healing. This message then spreads to the other three bodies creating less stress and more clarity and well being. Take the Personal Growth Initiative Assessment at otovets.com/pgi Our Inner Work Life Tells a Story Struggling with feelings of burnout and stress at work are not unique to the veterinary profession. In fact, this is an endemic issue that pervades almost every level of our society. Scientists have begun to classify these internalized thoughts and feelings that are brought on at work as "Inner Work Life." We've all experienced the power of Inner Work Life at some time. The waxing and waning of motivation throughout the day, that little voice that can ramp up your emotions building relationships or creating conflict, even altering how our subconscious mind perceives the actions of others around us during the day. What Inner Work Life describes is our behind the scene's motivators; the silent judgements we make, the stories we craft that affect decisions made by us and how these interpretations control our own internal thoughts and actions. Our feelings of our own levels of control over these situations, aka autonomy, form a key aspect to how we craft these stories. So how can we increase autonomy? The first thing we must realize is there are differing types of autonomy. First, there is what I call "Controlling Autonomy" or the ability to schedule your day in a way you desire to control it, letting the individual autonomy decide when tasks and appointments to be done. This simple act of Controlling Autonomy can help us feel more efficient and better able to cope with daily challenges, unfortunately it does very little to progress personal growth and in the long term only minorly improves feelings of autonomy. This is a common and important level of autonomous control within our society given to employees by managers as a way to say they provide autonomy in the workplace. This makes Controlling Autonomy a common scapegoat by managers when they fail to provide a much more empowering type of autonomy; "Meaningful Autonomy." To aid our employees in this evolution toward increased Meaningful Autonomy we may need to provide some structure and/or identify how they can discover, plan for, and pursue Meaningful Autonomy themselves. Christine Robitchek's Personal Growth Initiative lab has a great model for this; Personal Growth Initiative Scale (PGIS), or a measure that allows us to track the individuals readiness for Meaningful Autonomous growth, ability to plan for effective growth, opportunities and presence of relationships needed for growth, and their tendency towards taking action in areas of Meaningful Autonomy. Listen in to learn more about how PGI can form the framework for your own Personal and Professional Growth Journey. Take the Personal Growth Initiative Assessment at otovets.com/pgi

Salutogenesis is a word few of us have heard before but could be the means by which we can rejuvenate our profession. Salutogenesis is the pursuit of knowledge around the study of the origins of health, contra the origins of disease, resulting in a better understanding of the "flourshing state" of mental, physical and spiritual health. More simply defined; salutogenic research revolves around the "top performers" and what makes them the top, vs focusing on the pathologies that cause bottom performers to become bottom. The pursuit of the factors that lead to flourshing allows us to elevate people from a "healthly" normal and better protect that elevation from suboptimal states using techniques we learn from the top 1%, 5% or 10% of practitioners in their fields. In order to make salutgenesis mainstream in veterinary medicine we will need a fundamental shift in resources from our "we've always done it this way" mentality and instead we must begin to embrace alternative interventions that focus less on correcting the underlying pathologies.

Cheryl asks Angela the question, “What is Salutogenesis and how does it apply to healthcare?”  Angela answers, “This is a term coined by medical sociologist Aaron Antonovsky. It has latin roots--saluto meaning health and genesis meaning generating. We're all familiar with pathogenetic or disease causing, and this sort of the opposite. What Aaron Antonovsky had noticed was that the resources people had to cope in an environment affected their outcomes. Essentially the amount of stressors in their environment and the way that they could deal with things could make a difference whether they had better healing or less beneficial healing.” Learn more about how Angela and her team at GBBN apply salutogenesis and the positive outcomes that result. What Does It Take to Be a Chiropractor? with Dr. Ron Oberstein Today in this special episode of The MaxLiving Podcast, host Dr. Nick sits down with leading Chiropractor and President of Life Chiropractic College West, Dr. Rob Oberstein. Life Chiropractic College West is a private college in Hayward, California is known for its Doctor of Chiropractic degree program, and has been accredited since 1987 by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education and by the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners. In addition to his service as President of Life Chiropractic College West, Dr. Rob has decades of experience as a practicing Chiropractor and is seen as one of the leaders of Chiropractic in North America. In this episode. Dr. Ron shares what it takes to become a Chiropractor, what made him choose the path of Chiropractic, and the potential Chiropractic Care has to change healthcare for the better. When asked about what it takes to be a chiropractor, Dr. Ron says that first and foremost, one must have “the heart to serve.” He explains that Chiropractic is more than a career, and is in fact a calling that takes years of study and a dedication to providing health and wellness. What very few people know is that Chiropractors go through years of arduous study, learning many of the same subjects as medical doctors. What sets Chiropractors apart from medical doctors, then, is not what they learn, but how they learn. As Dr. Ron explains, “we learn it in a different way,” focusing on Salutogenesis, which is the focus on factors that support human health and well-being, rather than focusing on factors that cause disease (otherwise known as pathogenesis). As Dr. Ron explains, the process of becoming a Chiropractor is not severely limited by past studies, though a prior college degree is often required. However, as has recently become apparent in traditional medical students as well, an undergraduate degree in the sciences does not necessarily guarantee success in medical school. In fact, outside experiences and perspectives can inform medical and Chiropractic students alike, creating a diverse and well-rounded collection of health-minded professionals. Find out more about what it takes to become a Chiropractor: https://maxliving.com/healthy-articles/exceptional-chiropractic-care-begins-with-training/ Dr. Ron stresses the need for balance between traditional medical practices and the health-centered focus of Chiropractic care. As he says, “we all have to work together.” When you hurt your arm, you go to the nervous system, and then you need to visit your Chiropractor to care for your nervous system and help its ability to support smooth and fast healing. The underlying approach to Chiropractic and health is that “this body was born perfectly,” and Chiropractors “work with that intelligence so that the body can heal itself,” focusing on what's right with the body vs. what's wrong with the body. Dr. Nick asks Dr. Ron about his perspective on the role of Chiropractic in healthcare, the balance of emergency care versus preventative care, and the idea that Chiropractic care should be a part of your healthcare “from the womb to the tomb.” Both Doctors stress the need for Chiropractic in the world, and Dr. Ron discusses his educational insights into the growth of Chiropractic care in the future. As Dr. Ron and Dr. Nick state, “we need more Chiropractors” and “we need more people seeking them out.” Tune in to this exciting new episode of The MaxLiving Podcast to find out everything you need to know about Chiropractic, natural health, and more! In this episode, Dr. Cheryl talks about the salutogenic model to health and how it differs from the pathogenic model. Salutogenesis is a model of health that focuses on health and optimal potential. The focus is not on the disease or dysfunction, which is the focus of the pathogenic model. Most of us grow up and are inundated with pathogenic model viewpoints. We are taught to fear so, SO, much and not trust in our amazing bodies. We have so much more control then we have ever been told. Dr. Cheryl gets into the difference in the two models and the paradigm shifts that come with a differing view. Join our Facebook community to discuss these health paradigms and see where you fit!

We all may complain about healthcare, but do you know the difference between sick care vs. healthcare? Dr. Jeff Algajer is a neurologically based chiropractor located in Chaska that has a passion for restoration. He joins us on The Transformation Show today to discuss how to recognize the difference between sick care vs. health care and how you can maintain a healthy lifestyle. Outline of This Episode [2:22] Why chiropractic care? [7:35] When did he realize the difference between sick care vs. health care [14:45] Most people only go to the chiropractor when they are feeling bad [22:48] Does he have any transformational stories? [32:08] Has he noticed a change in children? [34:25] Why should we move to live? [38:21] How much do you need to move to be healthy? Why did he choose chiropractic care? Jeff was always interested in health and after an injury, he became interested in chiropractic care. He admits that there is a lot of freedom in his work and he basically works for himself. There are various different techniques between chiropractors and they vary due to a difference in philosophies. Jeff is fascinated by the fact that our bodies can heal so well. They are essentially built for health. But the slightest shift in the spine can cause problems in the communication between the nervous system and the rest of the body. This problem in communication is called subluxation and it can cause the body to break down and misfunction. Chiropractic care improves nerve communication and can lead to healing in the body. When did Jeff begin to realize the difference between sick care vs. health care? When we don’t feel well we go to the doctor. The doctor examines us and asks about our symptoms. Then this usually leads to a diagnosis and medication to treat the symptoms of the ailment. Unfortunately, this is just treating sickness. Healthcare system is not set up to encourage health. The drugs that are prescribed by doctors often interfere with the body’s amazing natural ability to heal itself. The underlying problems are never fixed. To fix these problems people would have to drastically change their lifestyle rather than just pop a pill. What is stress? When most people talk about the stress they are talking about mental stress that they have in their lives. But the technical meaning of stress is anything that forces the body out of homeostasis. When the body is in homeostasis it is not changing. If we want to change the way our body works: to get stronger and healthier, then we need to impose stress. When you go to the gym to train you are stressing your body. It is then important for the body to rest. This cycle of stimulus and recovery is what training is all about. What can you do to focus on real health care? Salutogenesis is a term that literally means health creation. Real health care is all about doing things that are healthy for you. This means doing a job you love, moving your body (a lot!), and eating good foods. Your illnesses are the result of you living in a distressed state or a toxic environment. When you truly begin to focus on the health of your whole body then you can start living a healthy life. You can’t just go to the gym for a few months and expect change. The changes you make are a lifetime commitment. (There are no hacks to health care!) Eating right, exercising, and drinking enough water will bring about a better version of yourself. This episode features an interview with Gareth Presch, CEO and Founder of The World Health Innovation Summit. We discuss how taking a salutogenic approach to person-centred health really is the key to supporting wellbeing across individuals, organisations and communities. Gareth describes his story about how a single Tweet in 2014 led to a global movement today with the support of the United Nations to: Help grow our economies (globally, nationally and locally) Take pressures off our health and social services (staff and resources) Create healthier and happier populations (improve people’s health and wellbeing) Restore the balance to the environment Create equal and safe opportunities Support the most vulnerable people in our society Aside from all these, discover also what’s the future for the World Health Innovation Summit. Gareth is excited to share their future plans to do more and reach more people. KEY TAKEAWAYS What is the salutogenic approach? “Salutogenesis is Aaron Antonovsky’s health tier goals. In contrast to pathogenic, we look for wellness factors instead of risk.” It started with a tweet. It was already 3 years ago when he tweeted and invited people if they would be interested in coming to Carlisle, Cumbria o share knowledge. He got a surprising response from the community. World Health Innovation System (WHIS) is broken down into 5 areas: kids, workplace, elderly, technology, and environmental. What do kids learn about health and wellness? Kids learn about looking after themselves and managing their emotions. There are so many programs that hone the physical health of kids, but this time, WHIS wanna concentrate on teaching kids be in touch & take care of their emotional side. WHIS has become an international global movement which grew through social media. He prides on their business plan which helps them develop as an organisation. Also, 20% of their revenue is reinvested in the community directly. What’s the future for WHIS? Gareth envisions them to be a global platform for health and social care. He wants WHIS to be worldwide-known in the next 5 years and continuously help people. BEST MOMENTS “Work with people that work well with you. Understand the concepts to join & help others in a collaborative way… The further you collaborate, the further you go.” “The whole idea is to create new opportunities, generate income streams, and reinvest those income streams back to the community.” VALUABLE RESOURCES World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS) 17 Sustainable Development Goals World Economic Forum National Health Service (NHS) ABOUT THE HOST Dr Shan Hussain is an author, general practitioner, health coach, wellness advisor and ambassador to the World Health Innovation Summit.
