From working with elite athletes and veterans to building nationwide men's groups, Owen offers practical insights on how to reset the nervous system, navigate burnout, and show up more fully in life and leadership. If you think you're handling the pressure just fine—this episode might change your mind.
Today, I'm joined by Owen Marcus, an expert in somatic and emotional healing for men across the world. His company is called MELD. He is highly knowledgeable, with 30+ years of experience, and it was a real pleasure speaking with him. Many of us men struggle to express our emotions. It's classic! What we may not know, though, is that unprocessed hard emotions can easily evolve into porn cravings and porn relapse. Anger and shame (the feeling of not being good enough) often drove my cravings for porn. And I hadn't a clue this was happening! This skill of noticing your emotions, processing through them, and being able to sit with them when they're uncomfortable is crucial for recovery from porn addiction. This is because from a psychological perspective, hard emotions and insecurities (and I know that's a swearword for a lot of us men) are at the root of our porn addiction. In my program, I teach men specific methods to get deep into these emotions, reflect on them, and become experts at effectively working through them so that these fundamental human insecurities don't evolve into cravings for porn. In today's episode of Men's Therapy Podcast, host Marc Azoulay welcomes Owen Marcus. He is a seasoned expert in somatic therapy and emotional development. Owen sheds light on the complexities of emotionally unavailable men. He has years of experience helping men embrace vulnerability and heal from trauma. He provides valuable insights into the impact of toxic masculinity on emotional detachment. Additionally, he examines how societal expectations play a role in this issue. Owen shares, "For many men, emotional unavailability is a defense mechanism. It's not a trait, but a learned response to years of conditioning. Where vulnerability was often seen as weakness." He emphasizes the importance of healing emotional wounds and taking time to focus on personal growth. Owen emphasizes that embracing vulnerability fosters deeper connections with oneself and others. This approach can lead to a more fulfilling life. Owen examines how men often adopt coping mechanisms like suppression and avoidance. These behaviours can hinder their ability to form meaningful connections. As a result, men may struggle to build deeper relationships. Owen's somatic therapy approach targets both the mind and body. It is an effective tool for men looking to break free from harmful cycles. This therapy helps them heal emotionally.

Owen Marcus started helping men because he realized he needed help with his relationships. His 30-year journey from leading men's groups led to writing a book, a documentary film on his work and starting three businesses that adapt the science behind stress and trauma therapy, attachment theory, and leadership development to train men to succeed in all their relationships. His work has been featured in Men's Health, New York Times, The Today Show, ABC News, NPR, and more. Leading therapists such as Esther Perel and Sue Johnson have endorsed this work because of the sustainable change it produces. His passion for the work and the men it severs comes through the unique stories he has from decades of doing the work. Both men and women leave inspired and with a new frame to view men and how to help them. 3 Top Tips My ROC Formula: slow down to Relax, Open up to vulnerability, and reach out for Connection How we disconnect from our own experience or others is not our fault. Those coping mechanisms are survival strategies that have outlived their usefulness. We have a growing epidemic of drug use, suicides, loneliness, and despair in part because men as they get older don't have real friends. We have found easy and fun ways for men to develop some of the deepest friendships of their lives. We are not therapy, addiction recovery, or suicide prevention services, but we have several men come out and say, if it wasn't for this work, they would have killed themselves. We have created a scalable way for men to help men. Talking points: masculinity, culture, relationships What is it men are actually looking for? We know how media tends to define "masculinity", but what is it men are wanting to define? I sat down with MELD founder and fellow coach Owen Marcus to dig into some of this, because we've both found that what men really want and what mainstream narratives say they want are often two different things. Dig in, team. (00:00:00) - Why do you think “masculinity” gets so much attention in our culture? (00:05:44) - When are where do men feel most aligned, and why getting out of your head is important (00:12:07) - Where did mature masculinity go, and the balance of biology and culture (00:19:25) - What happens when men miss moments of maturation (00:27:03) - The value of being able to share what you're going through with others, and what gets in the way (00:33:27) - What is emotional physiology? (00:39:24) - Tools to get back into the body, and what about men who avoid the work for fear it'll make things worse? Owen Marcus resisted getting into men's work, and it was only because his pain exceeded his fear that he started his first men's group in 1995 in his clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. The conventional approach to men's groups began to feel inadequate for Owen and the deep, transformative work he sought. After completing his straw bale home in the forests of Idaho, he decided to take everything he had developed in his practice and worked to create a new model. By the middle of 2005, he had a thriving men's group group. What began as the Sandpoint Men's Group (SMG) grew beyond Marcus's wildest expectations. Nineteen years later, it boasts over 400 alumni and more than 50 active members. This journey led to the birth of EVRYMAN and now MELD, each step an evolution of his initial vision. Learning to be vulnerable with others can benefit your relationships, your health and your business. Owen Marcus is the cofounder of Evryman, a wellness company for men that seeks to help men connect and grow emotionally. The majority of men are raised to believe that showing vulnerability and emotion is a sign of weakness, and it's time that we destigmatize this. Getting in touch with your emotions can relieve chronic stress, strengthen relationships, and make you more creative and collaborative in business. We all learn and let our guard down through modeling and example, so the more you show up as your authentic self, the more you will attract emotional connections with others. Let your guard down, be vulnerable, and help create a culture of real connection!

In modern masculine culture, there can be a lot of pressure to shut down, suppress, or numb out emotions. But just like everything else we can experience, there's tremendous amounts of information in what we're feeling. This is why I'm such a big advocate for somatic practices—really feeling in your body what's going on—and cultivating emotional intelligence. And it's why I sat with EVRYMAN co-founder Owen Marcus; he's an expert on this subject. For more than twenty-five years, Owen Marcus has worked with men's groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, celebrate their strengths, and live their lives fully and with joy. As co-founder of EVRYMAN, he and his support men worldwide. As the New York Times describes it: “CrossFit for emotions.” Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger's Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others find their out-of-the-box solutions. However, it wasn't until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. Along the way, he met many incredible men – men who struggled to create the lives they wanted. Owen observed the patterns in his corporate management and Mindfulness Stress Reduction seminars and then began working with groups of men to give them something new: how to be their own man. Of course, the ManKind Project is near and dear to my heart, as they were my initiation to men's work. Another group I have tremendous respect for is Evryman. Evryman was founded in 2016, and whose mission is to connect and help men to lead more successful, fulfilling lives. Evryman has a particular focus in getting men out of our minds and into our bodies to feel our emotions. In fact, Bryan and I use a variation of the Evryman protocol in our own men's group to practice emotional fluency. What propelled Evryman on the national scene was one of their co-founders, Dan Doty, appeared on the Joe Rogan show…which led to big time media exposure including a spot on The Today Show. Evryman has been featured in Men's Health, Inc. Magazine and the NY Times called Evryman the “Crossfit for Your Emotions” According to our guest today, over 1,000 men have gone through their in person retreats and another 1,000 men are involved in their online communities. I think it's important for you, the man who is listening, to have knowledge of and access to the men's work organizations that I've vetted and would personally recommend. So today, our guest is Owen Marcus, co-founder of Evryman, to give you a behind the scenes look of what goes on at an Ervyman retreat. Owen Marcus is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Evryman, an organisation that helps men live successful and fulfilling lives, through greater emotional awareness. After going through a difficult period in his life, where he experienced burnout, triggered by the betrayal of a business partner, Owen turned to other men to see how they experienced similar struggles. He felt safer, but didn't have a group to discuss openly with. So he created one. The first men's group, which ultimately evolved into Evryman, dedicated to supporting men's emotional and mental health was established 17 years ago. Specific topics covered in this episode include: Burnout, identity and betrayal; How men supporting men is can be transformative & destigmatise men's vulnerability; The support systems and tools that Owen relies on for his wellbeing; In addition, we discuss the following questions: Is entrepreneurship a calling? How do we show up authentically, when as men we are not taught to be emotional? How do we create a space for vulnerability in business? Lucas Krump joins me on the podcast this week to talk about men’s mental health. Lucas started a company called EVRYMAN, for the sole purpose of helping men, improve their mental health and wellbeing by focused on the unique dynamics that men deal with around mental health and wellness. Lucas is passionate about connection, community, and emotional wellness. As CEO and Co-Founder of EVRYMAN, Lucas together with EVRYMAN co-founders Dan Doty, Owen Marcus and Sascha Lewis lead a global movement that brings men together to develop their emotional skillset, enabling deeper connections with themselves and others. Since launching in 2017, EVRYMAN has supported thousands of men to lead happier, healthier more connected lives via retreats, weekly groups and online programs. EVRYMAN has been featured in the New York Times, Men's Health, The Today Show and The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast. He is an adventurer and a traveler. Lucas grew up in Kansas, after college he spent 10 years living in Africa and Asia before moving to New York City and now Hudson, New York. where he calls home. His passion for service and commitment to purpose are rooted in his Jesuit education and midwest values. He believes deeply in human connection and its ability to heal wounds and open hearts to the endless possibilities of the human experience. The mission statement of the EVRYMAN program says that we cannot change what life brings, but we can change how we respond. This resonates strongly with a lot of what I have learned in recovery from addiction. You can connect with Lucas and learn more about EVRYMAN here: EVRYMAN Website, Lucas on LinkedIn, Video Explaining EVRYMAN, Lucas on Instagram, EVERYMAN on Instagram, EVRYMAN Podcast HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Lucas Krump joins us to talk about the mission of EVRYMAN. EVRYMAN is a men’s wellness organization focused on supporting men with mental and emotional health by improving their emotional resiliency. The approach is peer to peer support by combining online and offline activities aimed at bringing men together to practice improving mental and emotional health. Lucas explains the founding story of EVRYMAN and talks about his own personal struggle to find satisfaction and happiness in his late 30s. He thought about what he was missing and what he needed to make him happy. On paper, he had all the things society told him that would make him happy but that is not what he was feeling. That realization led him to create EVRYMAN out of his desire to find a group of men to support him personally in that effort. What do men go through? What causes men to have a specific mental health challenge differently than women? Lucas explains how men go through transitions in their life and how those transitions impact us. We talked about how socially and culturally that men have received a message that they need to “go it alone” during the singular pursuit of accomplishment. This leads men to struggle to handle the transitions we face in life. We talked about where the societal pressures that negatively impact men originated from and how they have evolved over time. We talked about why men tend to “suffer in silence” and what we can do about it. Lucas takes us all the way back to when we as a species evolved out from a “farming” based society to an “industrial” based society where individual pursuits were prioritized over team and community pursuits. We talked about being proactive versus reactive with our own mental health care and wellbeing and how someone can go from being “reactive” about their wellness and mental health to being proactive and engaging in managing our mental health. EVRYMAN started out as “in-person” men’s groups and has evolved into digital groups as they scale toward their goal of reaching and helping 1 million men with their mental health. We talked about nervous system regulation and learning how to do it (and why it is so important). We talked about how powerful groups, and interactions with others (sitting intentionally in a group, bound by a set of agreements) can be for helping us learn to slow down, feel safe, learn to express ourselves and begin to regulate our own nervous system. We talked about the EVRYMAN business, how they are growing, who they want to work with and what they need to scale including potential partners, capital, etc. Explanation of EVRYMAN from their website: EVRYMAN is not about “finding yourself,” but “creating yourself” -- understanding and acting productively on your emotions instead of burying or redirecting them, and thereby building a more fulfilling life. With the need for safe distancing, our online program gives you what you need now more than ever. It’s an interactive behavioral curriculum, not therapy or guru worship, and we invite you to experience it for yourself. Many of us have suffered major personal, professional and financial losses over the last several weeks, often on top of pre-existing feelings of sadness, loneliness or disconnection. He talks about the role of physical/somatic experience in shaping emotional experience, how suppressing our emotions creates PTSD pathways in our brains, and the power of "changing your mind” over “learning new techniques.” Lastly, we talk about how connection is the essence of being human, what it takes to achieve deeper connections, the benefits of emotionally risk-taking, and actionable advice for how people, men in particular, can cultivate better emotional intelligence.
This episode covers much, including:How to frame this current time without being a victimWho do you want to be at the end of this time period? How embracing fear and uncertainty leads to better leadershipPersonal fears and vulnerability from Dan and OwenHow we can come together without coming together in person
With great joy I welcome my dear friend and brother, Lucas Krump! I’m excited to share our conversation around creating space for men to connect with their emotions, practice vulnerability, and build community. You’ll hear how Lucas’ story of disconnecting from his heart and doing what he believed as a man he “should” be doing led him to feel empty inside. From that low place, he did his own emotional work and is now the CEO and co-founder of EVRYMAN, an organization that creates community for men to do the same. ***Our meditation begins at [35:32]! ------------------ Lucas is passionate about connection, community and emotional wellness. “If you open up and actually be yourself, your not only going to be accepted and seen. It's going to power you through all of the tough shit your going through. It's going to power you towards the things you actually want and who you actually are.” On this week's episode host Dan Doty leans into an old part of himself and plays a recording of a song he wrote about loneliness. We then jump into an interview with Evryman's Owen Marcus to discuss how NOT to be lonely. I'll give you a hint: it starts by taking a risk and being vulnerable. Guest Introduction: Dan Doty is a writer, filmmaker, coach, and mentor. Dan spent many years as a wilderness therapy guide, and later had a successful career as a director and producer of wilderness-based TV and film. He is the co-founder (along with Owen Marcus) of Evryman, an organization that focuses on men’s work, also called deep work. He is also the host of the Evryman Podcast. Dan has an important message for men about their emotional health, and discusses what men can do to become better partners, fathers, community members, and leaders. Interview Summary: In this interview, Dan begins by sharing his background and journey through several different careers. He talks about starting Evryman to address the two biggest issues that men face in today's world: emotional suppression and social isolation. He expands on what these issues might look like in someone's life. Dan then explains how men's groups help solve suppression and isolation by practicing vulnerability. He also talks about how his personal relationships have improved as a result of opening up. Dan describes how the birth of his son pushed him to fully commit to this paradigm of feeling more. He also shares how he was able to improve his relationship with his father. Dan then explains what it means to be fully present. He offers advice on how to be more present by slowing down, becoming aware of what's happening in ourselves, and then being fully there for others. Dan goes on to discuss how men's groups can help with dating and relating, and how they've impacted his relationship with his wife. Next, Chris shares the story of how the relationship between his parents fell apart, and about a friend whose marriage became strained. Dan elaborates on being vulnerable in the right contexts and with the right people, and how it takes practice to develop this skill. He then debunks the idea of the rugged individual and figuring things out on your own. He discusses the importance of social connection and the negative effects of loneliness. Chris talks about opening up to people in safe spaces. Dan applies the concept of titration to vulnerability, and explains how to cultivate openness through repetitions and small steps. He also references a similar concept from Steve Kotler's book about flow states. Chris then shares some of his past traumas that he's had to work through. Finally, Dan describes his first experience with a men's group. He also talks about how men's groups can be attributed to many of his successes in life, including building connections and starting new careers. For more than fifteen years, Owen Marcus has worked with men's groups to develop programs that give them the tools and teach them the skills to be successful men, to celebrate their strengths, and to live their lives fully and with joy. Owen Marcus overcame challenges such as Asperger's Syndrome and Dyslexia to pursue his passion of helping others to find their out of the box solutions. However, it wasn't until much later that he understood that in being free to be his own man, he was able to create and fulfill a life he designed. His book Grow Up is not a “self-help book”; it's a playbook on how to live your own life. Imagine a life where you can dream, love, create and live in the moment with an ease you never thought possible.

This episode is a throwback to an important weekend in my life. 2 years ago I invited my closest friends to Montana for my bachelor party. Instead of booze and strippers I asked my friend and mentor Owen Marcus to lead a 2 day intensive men's weekend. Before we began we sat down with my buddy Shawn Helvey to discuss what the hell we were about to do. Owen is a remarkable guy and although he's not that old, wrinkled, or green, he's the closest thing to Yoda I'll ever find.
