OPB’s partner station, KMHD Jazz Radio, has been celebrating its 40th birthday this year. So we’re using the milestone of this anniversary to look back at Portland’s birth and evolution as a jazz town.   When you think of jazz, perhaps its birthplace, New Orleans, or New York City first come to mind. But Portland’s been attracting jazz stars and fostering local jazz talent for practically a century, and is home today to a vibrant local scene that’s expanded beyond the boundaries of traditional jazz. We explore the history of the genre’s golden era in Portland, when the jazz scene thrived on North Williams Avenue in the city’s Albina neighborhood. Albina’s music scene later evolved to include soul, funk and R&B in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Many Black-owned jazz and soul clubs in Albina didn’t outlast destructive “urban renewal” projects that hit the historically Black neighborhood hard. But continued investment in the jazz scene by local musicians like Mel Brown has helped rebuild it to what it is now.   We also hear from beloved longtime KMHD DJ and host, Ted Smith, also known to listeners as “The Baby Boomer,” about the station’s ethos of “jazz without boundaries,” what he hopes to provide to listeners of his show, “The Soulful Strut,” and what he sees in Portland’s jazz scene today.   For more Evergreen episodes and to share your voice with us, visit our showpage. One Tuesday morning in Tāmaki Makaurau mid August, Pete, John and I had the chance to sit down at the table at Coco's Sound Lounge and chew the fat with Rosie Finn of Neudorf Vineyards — and she can chat. Rosie almost broke Matt Dicey's record of such adept conversational flow that next to no editing was required. Dreamy! Matt still holds the record but Rosie was hot on his heels with only two short excerpts ending up on the cutting room floor. It was a total treat to chat to this fine wahine who is truly flying the flag for successful succession — quite a thing for the NZ wine industry — all the while being a relatively new Mum herself. Rosie's folks, Judy and Tim Finn (not the musician) started Neudorf in the 1970's. Like almost all of our wine pioneers that meant a mortgage or two and a lot of fast learning. Fast forward to 2023 and their daughter Rosie has stepped into the family biz as her folks step out to enjoy retirement.Rosie knows how to spin a yarn and in this chat she shares one of the best stories I've heard of pairing wine with food. It combines one wine and the cuisine of a Copenhagen based Michelin star restaurant and a night dive in an underwater cave set beneath Takaka Hill in the Kahurangi National Park. During our chat we had the pleasure of indulging in a sneak peak at the soon to be released 2022 Neudorf Rosie's Block Amphora Chardonnay (coming at you 1 October). To say the wine was delicious is an understatement. While we crushed a cup, Rosie chatted away about how a Facebook post from Jude landed her a job with the wonderful wine ambassador Mel Brown at Pop Brixton, London. After what looked like a few years of nothing but fun Rosie reluctantly had to leave, unable to secure a visa extension. She returned home and suffered the common culture shock most of us kiwis feel after a few years of cutting loose in Blighty. She dried her teary eyes and took firm hold of the torch from Judy and Tim as the next generation to  drive this incredible family business. This was a chat that flowed from the moment we sat down. Rosie Finn is one delightfully funny woman.  So, find yourself a comfy spot, close your eyes and imagine you're parked up somewhere on the beach in the Abel Tasman. The sun is shining that warming hue of Neudorf yellow and there's a delicious glass of Chardonnay in your hand. This is the not serious Rosie Finn chat.not serious wine chats would like to thank our supporters:TradecraftBy the BottleAntipodes Water Co. Mel Brown is a talent success manager, a trained celebrant and host of her own podcast, Mel's Monday Musing. She describes herself as childfree by choice but can see children in her future. As a woman in her mid-thirties who is open to parenthood, in our chat Mel shares the pressures that come with dating when it feels like the biological clock is ticking. We dive into dating, exploring options such as egg-freezing and why Mel is asking herself if it is selfish to have children in a world of environmental uncertainty. As Mel is very much open to having kids, we do explore topics such as fertility and parenthood, which may not resonate with everyone. WAGRadio Vinyl Librarian Bill Reiter and DJZigZag are remembering two compatriots: Dickson Loo was one of WAGRadio's biggest fans. He passed away suddenly Friday, Oct. 22nd. It will be difficult knowing that brother Dickson won't be listening and loving Groovin' Blue anymore. Part of the creative heart of the WAGRadio flagship programme has been taken away by his death. Dickson was one of the kindest and most caring people as anyone who met him can attest to. Also, on Monday, Oct. 25th, musician and life-long friend Larry Volen left this world. A beautiful soul who played soul music beautifully. A joyously real guy. This latest Groovin' Blue and all future shows are dedicated to these two wonderful pals. It was written by Keith Schreiner also known as Auditory Sculpture and today's guest trumpeter, composer and educator Derek Sims. They called themselves Jazztronica in the early 2000s. Derek holds the trumpet chair in Mel Brown's famed Septet, previously held by Thara Memory. He started the Portland Jazz School in September of 2017, is the Adjunct Professor of Jazz Trumpet and the Jazz Band Director at Portland State University. What I didn't know before talking to him today is that he has returned to his Jazztronica period in his newest compositions. Let's catch up with Derek Sims.

On my program the Bay Area has been a major focus of my journey to a land before my time. The heliport, Denny Zeitlin, Vovo, Sly Stone, Jacks on Sutter, Jimbo's Bop City, Wally Heider Studios and so much more. Yet, another part of the Golden Bay is San Jose which had it own regional music scene separate from San Francisco. East Side San Jose, the gospel and blues coming out of the church and night clubs churning notes that were Fixing to Die with Hamstrung Guitar and a Hammond Organ with the Leslie Speaker swirling goodness to the masses who could take in the music live and see the likes of John Lee Hooker, Mel Brown, Boz Scaggs, Steve Miller, Linda Tillery, B.B. King, John Turk, Cornelius Bumpus and Michael White. Floating between genres my guest has always tried to convey a spirit of oneness, inclusiveness and sophistication. This has been in different neighborhoods, in different towns, different cities all over the world. When you combine His mind creation and soul creation you get a heart that beats in polyrhythms determined to pump energy and love to all those he comes across. Along the way on this bus to never never land The spirits have helped bring me closer to my native seed. The ability at @ 32 years old to begin to harness my passion for music with my broadcasting prowess. This is not to say that the journey has not been winding, laborious and full of lessons. Still, there are moments when you realize what your doing is painting a picture of Americana. Mexico is the country south of the United States. And it's in the biggest of cities, Mexico, that my guest started his life. He was around the Cunga as the city itself was thriving amongst the mix of Afro Cuban, Bossa and Native Rhythms. Upon returning to the states as a kid my guest wound up living one block away from Bob Weir. While they never played music as kids it was an initial connection that would be amplified later on. Before Kingfish, the British Gigs and Partying with Brent Mydland my guest had to stand out. He had to get up at an all black club, the kind that this host fantasies about, and play his harmonica. The blues leaders of the Day in the South Bay were the liked if Clifford Coulter, Johnny Carswell and Mel Brown. One day in San Diego I walked into a record shop and noticed this Mel Brown LP and when I looked at the personnel there was my guest on Impulse late sixties and at that point the intersection had occurred. Taking chances has been my guests whole life. He has participated in several group and solo shows in galleries, restaurants and coffee shops.   “I deal with color on an intuitive level. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment”  flow.  With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design.  The same is true for my mixed media work.  My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. Today it’s…well I suppose we should call him a keyboard player because he can play them all but I think Louis Pain would rather be known as an organist because we’ve seen him so many times sitting behind the mighty, mighty Hammond B3 and playing with people like Paul deLay, Mel Brown, LaRhonda Steele, Sweet Baby James Benton, Soul Vaccination, Lloyd Jones…shall I go on? I could. He’s got a new album called Rock Me Baby with LaRhonda Steele which has gotten national recognition and airplay. We’ll find out how he got to be named “King Louie.” He’s one of the busiest musicians in the state. Glad he took some time out to talk with us. P.S. Just to clarify......During the conversation, I asked Louis about the bands he's currently in. Somehow the conversation took some left and right turns and we never got back to the fact that he plays with Lloyd Jones and, when he's in town, Ty Curtis. Ty is based in Austin now but they work together quite a bit during the summer. Blame me.

Through the lens of some of Portland's most influential music scenes—think Satyricon, X-Ray Cafe, and Jimmy Mak's—Scott Pemberton has channelled a ray of sunlight he calls “timber rock.” That's the name of his latest album, which came out last year, but it's also the name of the subgenre he is pioneering, harvesting funk, grunge, jazz, blues, and hippie jam vibes with the epic sweep of his roaring guitar. The resulting music is both tight and loose; recognizable as part of a lineage yet unorthodox; full of evolutions and improvisational concepts that may come and go. For some bands, the live show is a place for experimentation, the record a place for distillation. For Pemberton, even the album is just a slice of time."I came from very much a jazz background, so I think I naturally approached the songs that way," he says. "Within jazz, there is more of a skeletal song structure, that then every time you play the song, you add the flesh.”Born and raised in Portland, the guitarist spent time in legendary jazz drummer Mel Brown's band and has worked with heavy-hitting blues and soul vocalists Curtis Salgado and Linda Hornbuckle. But Pemberton also wears his classic rock influences on his sleeve. The last track on “Timber Rock,” for example, is a cover of The Beatles' “Dear Prudence.” This track, he says, epitomizes his way of approaching musical creation: play the songs live and see what works, both for the musicians and the audience. “I think that's part of what the audience enjoys," he says. "Every show is different. You might hear some of the same songs from one show to the next, but they won't be played the same way."Scott Pemberton—undoubtedly in his patented fedora and bushy beard—is on tour now and will be performing at Star Theatre on May 28th.
