It's time to live fierce, stay bold, and eat deliciously with my Mom, Ann, and sister, Jane Esselstyn!  That's right, we're celebrating the release of their new book, Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior, which is out and available now. It's always a party with these two and I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to be with them in person just a few weeks ago when we were all together at the Esselstyn Family Farm. You know what that means – it can get a little nutty when the three of us are together because that Esselstyn feistiness is ALIVE and WELL! Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior isn't your typical cookbook. Truly, it's a peek into our family history with stories, photos, quotes, and recipes from three generations of Esselstyns. Mostly, this book pays homage to the people who started it all - my parents - for forging and navigating that undiscovered path of plant-based nutrition at a time when no one understood how vital it was (including me and my siblings). Here we all are decades later and I'm so proud to sit with Jane and Ann and share some of the inspiration and recipes with you today. My Mother has been called the “Julia Child of Plant-Based cooking” and you'll see why after you dig through some of the recipes and photos in this gorgeous book. This truly is a fun and inspiring message of hope for all women to improve their own health so that they remain strong, bold, and fierce in body and mind! (and let's face it – there aren't many people MORE fierce than Jane and Ann!) I remember when I first went vegetarian as a teenager in the 90s. There were no recipe or nutrition blogs. If I wanted information, or a sense of community, my main outlet was Vegetarian Times magazine. I poured over the pages, even buying my first ever cookbook, The Vegetarian Times cookbook, that I could not have fed myself without. So I cannot imagine what it must have been like for Ann Esselstyn when her husband, Dr Caldwell B Esselstyn Jr made the discovery that a whole food plant-based diet just might help reverse cardiovascular disease. The whole family, including their daughter Jane, went fully plant-based pretty much overnight and had to completely relearn how to cook and eat. But we're lucky they did…because the Esselstyn clan has become a huge force for positive change in so many people's lives in their enthusiastic support for a health-focused plant-based diet. And what makes it possible? The thousands of recipes that Ann, and later Jane, have developed to take the guess work out of feeding yourself plants. So I jumped at the opportunity to chat with Ann and Jane Esselstyn ahead of the release of their latest book, Be a Plant-based Woman Warrior: Live Fierce, Stay Bold, Eat Delicious. On this episode we chat about: What it was like for Ann to start learning to cook plant-based meals for her family pre-internet when no one around them was eating this way The classic meal that remains a stable in the Esselstyn household to this day and is even served at weddings! How a plant-based diet changed Jane's relationship with her body The surprising source of so many superstar recipes in their books Why their approach to using diet to reverse disease looks different than nutrition for a healthy person The plant foods Ann + Jane try to eat daily How a plant-based diet powerfully supports women Their tips for boosting flavour and satisfaction in your meals How they stay energized as they age We get schooled on the CUVA…you'll have to listen! The original “Julia Child of plant-based cooking” teams up with her daughter to offer a multigenerational celebration of the power of a plant-based lifestyle—with 125 recipes. The Esselstyn family is three generations plant-based strong. Encouraged to create recipes without dairy and meat when her husband's research pointed to the impact of diet on reversing disease, Ann Esselstyn began feeding her family creative, plant-based meals more than thirty years ago. She and her daughter, Jane Esselstyn, are bolts of energy from the same strike of lightning and have become fierce, big-spirited advocates for a plant-based lifestyle, reaching hundreds of thousands of fans through their previous books and their popular YouTube channel. At eighty-six and fifty-six, respectively, Ann and Jane are pictures of ageless health and vibrancy and spend their days hiking, doing yoga, gardening, cooking, and spreading the message that diet is the key to living a happy, strong, and disease-free life. Be a Plant-Based Woman Warrior explains how women everywhere can pass on this important legacy in their own families through the generations, and illuminates how plants powerfully support a woman's body and mind. This cookbook is a call to action and a message of hope for any and all to be Plant-Based Women Warriors filled with vitality and in control of their own health. Dr. Beth Frates is a physician and Director of Wellness Programming at the Spaulding Stroke Research and Recovery Institute at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Frates is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. As I was listening to our conversation in post-production, Dr. Frates reminded me of past guest and plant-based rock star Jane Esselstyn with some of her language and mannerisms and inflection and occasional bursts of vocal volume and passion. Dr. Frates was influenced to practice lifestyle medicine from a very important person in her life, the person or patient she calls “Patient Zero”. This person, a major life-changing event and the effect he had on her caused a life-altering shift in her mindset, her thinking and ultimately her career path. In our conversation, we speak about Dr. Frates' interests in stress, the nervous system and its effect on heart health and vascular health. Dr. Frates has also devoted a considerable amount of time educating herself on behavior change and a “Coach Approach”. The emphasis on talking to your patients, not talking at them, being a coach instead of their finger-wagging doctor and enabling them to find the answers to their own concerns, to own their problems themselves by leading a discussion, asking questions, being a good listener and not judging. I sense that this content is very applicable to doctors and medical professionals who listen to this podcast. In other news, I have a big announcement of the completion of a project that I've been working on for many, many months. Not a book or a study, but a course, a webinar, to further your knowledge about plant-=based nutrition and the many reasons why this is the future. It is, to my knowledge, the first ever comprehensive webinar on the implementation of the plant-based diet for endurance athletes. If you're relatively new to the podcast or to me and my story, I am an endurance and competitive cyclist who just happens to have a radio style announcer voice, who just happens to have a podcast about plant-based nutrition. So, I've created this course that details from introduction to implementation, how athletes can implement a plant-based diet into their life. Why would you want to do this? Because it WILL make you a better athlete, no doubt about it. The line baloney that we've been fed that you must eat meat and dairy to be healthy humans and strong athletes is simply not true, and I have compiled the evidence and explanations to take you on a step-by-step journey to the end goal of immediately implementing this so that you can start to reap the rewards of this lifestyle for both your short-term athletic success and long-term health. This is somewhat time sensitive as I begin teaching this live and interactive webinar, on August 18, 2018. I have much more information on this course, what's included and specifics of dates and times of presentation by visiting plant-basedcyclist.com/plantbasedathletics. I'll also include several links in the show notes to make it easier. Plant-Based Nutrition for Endurance Athletes Details on the Webinar itself I hope you enjoy and learn something from this conversation, on Episode #47 with Dr. Beth Frates.

Hey everyone, I am Ian Cramer and thank you for listening to my podcast…the podcast that's dedicated to making you healthier by interviewing doctors and scholars of lifestyle medicine and plant-based nutrition. I hope that you come away from each of these episodes learning something about how diet and lifestyle can affect different areas of health. I had this conversation with Jane Esselstyn before she was about to speak to a large group of college students at SUNY Brockport, a local college here in the Rochester Area. We talk about projects she's working on, including a new YouTube channel that she's spearheading with her Mom, Ann. We also touch on her personal positions on ketogenic dieting, genetics and its role on disease as well as trends within the plant-based movement. If anyone has a sense of the ‘pulse' of the plant-based movement, it's Jane. She is part Energizer Bunny and part rockstar, her personality is infectious which makes the message she conveys that much more impactful. Jane is known for her talks on health above and below the belt, which if you knew how Jane started, isn't surprising. One of Her first gigs was teaching sex education, so it's not surprising that she melded plant-based nutrition with topics having to do with sexual health. Her talk provides an interesting angle and further reinforces the beneficial impacts of eating a whole foods plant-based diet. Jane offers some great insights on how to actually implement a plant-based diet from the food preparation side of things.  We talked about the easiest meals you can make, what to use instead of salt, sugar, and oils, and whether green juice is actually a true health food.  We also talk about protein, where she gets her inspiration for recipes, and the fact that you don't need to oil to saute your food.  Topics Discussed in the Podcast  the simplicity of eating plant-based why it's hard for some people to change their diet what to use instead of salt, sugar, and oil in your cooking is green juice healthy? how much protein you actually need the inspiration behind a recipe simple foods to add into your diet Links Jane Esselystyn's Instagram Jane Esselstyn's YouTube Channel Jane Esselstyn's Website 7 Day Rescue Diet Cookbook Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook The Engine2 Cookbook Plant-Strong with Rip Esselstyn Podcast episode with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Podcast episode with Rip Esselstyn (most downloaded episode of the show!) In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Brian Hart, M.Ed. About how culture influences health. Brian is a highly experienced educator with over twenty-five years in the field as a teacher, administrator, and advocate for school change in both the public and private sectors. He is currently working as an educational consultant and program designer for his own consulting company, EVOLV.ED. Specifically, Brian specializes in working with organizations to help them create immersive, hands-on, experiential programs designed to transform thinking and build problem-solving skills. As well, Brian and his wife, Jane Esselstyn RN, conduct seminars across the nation that help people “wrap their head, heart, and hands” around whole food, plant-based eating. He is a former Outward Bound instructor, wilderness EMT, plant-based chef, teacher, middle school principal, and carpenter. When not carting his kids to and from swim practice or editing their papers, Brian is a committed ultra-endurance athlete with four Ironman finishes to his name, among other run, bike, and ski events. Brian also holds a Rouxbe Cooking School professional certification in plant-based cooking. Today we talk about how culture influences health, why we choose the foods we do and how it inevitably affects our health. It is really quite fascinating to think about why different cultures and religions eat particular foods. Leaving behind the foods you grew up on is hard. Telling your elders you choose not to take part in those traditional dishes is even harder. Today we look at the connection between food, culture and why we make the choices that we do.   In this episode we discussed: Growing up SAD The culture of sports and junk food Religion, culture & socio-economics Why is it so hard to just make good choices Making good choices Training ourselves Culture of excess Just for one day Social and emotional challenges Our genes “But my grandma…” What about the Paleo people?   Links to things we mentioned: Brian Hart: , , , Jane’s – March 11th @ The Cleveland Clinic Wellness Center – P149 – PTP123  by Rip Esselstyn  by Ann Crile Esselstyn and Jane Esselstyn by Greg Easterbrook by Richard H.
