While the first "On the Trail of UFO's" may have felt like a crash-course into the deep end of the UFO phenomena, this second installment pulls viewers back into critical aspects of the phenomena that seem to be overlooked by current media. Much of what we ingest online and through television can be described as "digestible snippets" or shock-video announcements, Small Town Monsters pulls back, and immerses viewers into the position of the researcher, the documentarian. Seeing some familiar faces in both the YT and Paranormal communities, I enjoyed the cinematic direction taken in this documentary as an encouragement to get back into the field and get on the trail of the stories that make up the folklore and mystery of the small towns I explore. Camera angles situate the viewer as though they're taking part in the retelling of experiences, in-depth conversations with experiencers and witnesses reminding those interested in the phenomena that the most important part of the phenomena are the witnesses and the accounts. It's enough to go charge my camera batteries and beat down the doors of storytellers in my neck of the woods, seek out the strange stories and legends around the Blue Ridge & Appalachia. Overlapping historic accounts and folklore, I'm always grateful for STM's ability to bring folklorists into their modern work. Much of my informal interest is the evolution and linking of stories, and I appreciate Heather being able to provide her perspective on everything correlating. While a bit of this was filmed during 2020, I appreciate the newer faces brought into the story surrounding the northern Appalachian region. True to STM's continued theme of family, including new individuals wraps up a larger message of community and welcoming new experiences/encounters into the bigger picture. They also seem to behave differently than what we read about in more mainstream encounters. So, are witnesses experiencing the same phenomena, or something more sinister? Here's an experience sent in by a friend of the podcast, Sam. After her story, did some research: Shadowy figures appear on the rez, usually near the outskirts of an area. However, if they are in the pueblo/town, I’ve got a handful of reports of him being near doorways, and balconies specifically. Lurks. Big time Lurker. Unlike typical shadow people reports, reports from the Pueblos/Reservations have multiple witnesses, not just one person. The reports of shadowy figures are usually of the “Top Hat Man” which is different from Shadow people. The Top Hat Man Early Mention of Shadow People: Coast2Coast The Hat Man – What are shadow people? Harley “Swiftdeer” Reagan. Who implied that Shadow People were medicine men who walked in the spirit world and did harm to the living. (Story from Sam) I was 14 and we had just moved back to the Wanblee reservation a few months before. My mom was going thru a divorce so there was a lot of turmoil in our home. Because my mom and caregivers were working or busy at night, I usually hung out with my cousins. One night it was just me, Tam and our cousin Kayla home. My mom was out for the evening with one of the aunt’s on my dad’s side. Tam & I were still good girls but my older cousin Kayla was already being rebellious and started smoking. So we had made popcorn and we were watching Brahm Stokers Dracula that night. It was fall so it was already cold outside, there wasn’t a moon out that night either so it was really dark. In part of Wanblee area there is a 10pm curfew so we aren’t supposed to go out but you can be in your own yard and not get in trouble. So Kayla said she needed a smoke so we went out our bottom door and turned the porch light off. We were standing around talking while Kayla smoked, and I found an old broken GI Joe in the dirt. So as we talked and laughed I broke this the GI JOE up and I was throwing his pieces towards the road. I had his torso left and Kayla had finished her smoke so her and Tam went inside. So I threw the torso and when I did I stepped off the porch and there was a man standing on the side of our house looking at me. He was about 15 feet from me! I freaked out!!! I turned around, didn't even lock the screen door, had a hell of a time locking the bottom door. There’s a landing and then 6 steps to the main part of the house. I ran up those stairs screaming like a mad woman that someone was outside listening to us. I biffed it on the last step up and literally slid into the living room still screaming. Of course Tam & Kayla were laughing at me. Then they saw the terror in my eyes and they freaked out trying to calm me down enough to tell them what had happened. I finally told them and they freaked out. So they grab knives from the kitchen and we discuss running to our aunts house. I needed a weapon and said I had a baseball bat in my bedroom. So we walk down the hallway in a line. Me first of course, as we get closer to my bedroom I notice the temperature had dropped significantly and my bedroom light was on. I hadn’t left it on but the door was open a crack. So I kicked that bitch open and barged into my bedroom The foot of my bed was even with my bedroom window and there he was SITTING IN THE **** WINDOW SILL!!! My window had been removed from the frame and was laying on my bed and he was sitting there like the fucking blacked out Marlboro man. He turned his head and looked at me. I saw no face, just red eyes and I screamed and just stood there in shock. He nonchalantly jumped out of my window. My sister and Kayla had already run into the living room. I grabbed the bat and followed Then we ran to my aunts house 8 houses down. I tried to explain what had happened to my mom but she had partied too hard and kept laughing at me because I was in hysterics She finally called the cops and they met us at the house. They went out back behind the house and it had rained earlier that day so there was mud back there and NO FOOTPRINTS After that for a few months I had a recurring dream of him in our house, and he was always standing in doorways. From L in Vancouver: Two friends n i were living at lake kathlyn in smithers ⁰0ne night a guy walked around our balcony looking straight at all of us and glaring at us like very mean and scary but all you could really make out was his eyes. Like he was in the shadows. He walked around the corner where the balcony is third floor level. i look out the window next to where he disappeared and it was to high for him to jump off the balcony so i don't understand how or where he could have went to.. weird scary stuff use to happen to us there all the time. I think it was haunted . A. in Coon Rapids: You have guys ever encountered a being that was 8ft tall, wears a 1800s to 1700s suit and a top hat. First I actually encountered this thing was early fall late summer. It was just standing outside a warehouse in coon rapids. I always seen it while riding late at night 3am to 2am. I don't know, maybe this is hat man. A crazy version of it. I'm not crazy, I know. I hope it's just me being tired and I'm hallucinating. This isn't exactly evil but I could feel it could be sinister if it wanted. Some think the reason the Top Hat Man is more common is because he represents something outside of traditions for the area, and he may be a sinister trickster. Some think the phenomena makes it clear folks should go back to their indigenous beliefs: Brass: I live in an area where shadow people show themselves! I totally believe they are released to influence suicide! They thrive on fear and are around the drinking and crystal meth users! We gotta pray and go back to our old ways, our culture and ways of praying!! It saddens me! I ain't afraid of these black shadows ! But some people are most evil things like this thrive on fear!! The person will tell him the approximate location and he will bushwhack or drive his way to the location only to see it has disappeared. According to Wade Edward Speer's book, the lights are explained by human and natural phenomena in his book. I saw his Zoom presentation earlier this year on October 30. The documentary features the Wamsley family and highlights Jeff Wamsleys continued efforts to explore/investigate the Mothman incident. There are folklorists and researchers, and experiencers sharing Mothman incidents and details that aren't commonly known in the paranormal community. While it's a deep-dive into Mothman, the documentary doesn't regurgitate pop culture or commonplace information that can be looked up with a basic internet search. Increase in strange lights seen in the skies in WNC. Report from John: We went to the Brown Mountain Lights overlook at mile marker 20 Saturday night. We did not see the lights, but were fascinated with how bright the stars were! We did see an object in the sky flashing red white that made a sharp turn and moved very quickly. I expect it was a jet, but who knows? :) It was moving at a normal speed at first. It actually reversed course in a hairpin type turn, then rapidly crossed the sky about five times faster than other planes with that bright of lights. The reason I thought it was a jet was because of the trailing jet sound. It started almost over Brown mountain heading to the right (SSW) and then after approaching another jet moving in the opposite direction, it doubled back, speeded up significantly, and flew off to our left (NNW). For a few moments I thought it might be a drone moving that fast, but then I heard the trailing jet engine sound. A couple more notes. I believe it took less than 15 secs to reach the horizon, starting from above us. Also, the trailing jet-like sound was faint, in fact, Stephanie did not even hear it. That is another confusing point. To be a jet moving that fast might indicate it was a low flying jet, but the jet engine sound was so faint and trailing so far behind, it had to have been very high, similar in altitude to normal jet traffic. However, the red and white blinking lights were further apart on the object then I would have expected to observe on a jet that high. Maybe it was very high, very fast, and rather large also. 2nd Report from Heather: We were camping off highway 80 about 10 miles north of the Blue Ridge parkway turn to go to Mount Mitchell. We saw an odd plane late in the evening. I think it was the military. It was triangular, silver, with white and red lights. We heard a sound, like a sonic sound that was behind it. It was really odd. Then, when we all woke up in the morning, there were fighter jets flying and circling overhead. The silver triangular thing was large like a plane but flat and a weird bright light configuration in the front. The sound came from way behind it. Big Cats in WNC? Biologists and Wildlife experts say “no” however, in the past three years there have been multiple sightings. We recently received a report of one locally. People saying there’s no big cats: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article228080404.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThere%20are%20no%20known%20cougars,have%20been%20misidentified%20as%20cougars.%E2%80%9D The area this sighting occurred is in McDowell County, NC which are the NC ``foothills” of the Blue Ridge. The report includes howls, freaked out dogs in the small neighborhoods, and an alleged picture on a trail cam. We’re waiting on permission to share the trail cam photo, but it’s definitely compelling. What did a dinosaur's butt look like? This fossil tells us. Full Text of ReadingsTwenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 145All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Luke the EvangelistOn October 18, Catholics and other Christians around the world will celebrate the feast of St. Luke, the physician and companion of St. Paul whose gospel preserved the most extensive biography of Jesus Christ.St. Luke wrote a greater volume of the New Testament than any other single author, including the earliest history of the Church. Ancient traditions also acknowledge Luke as the founder of Christian iconography, making him a patron of artists as well as doctors and other medical caregivers.Luke came from the large metropolitan city of Antioch, a part of modern-day Turkey. In Luke's lifetime, his native city emerged as an important center of early Christianity. During the future saint's early years, the city's port had already become a cultural center, renowned for arts and sciences. Historians do not know whether Luke came to Christianity from Judaism or paganism, although there are strong suggestions that Luke was a gentile convert.Educated as a physician in the Greek-speaking city, Luke was among the most cultured and cosmopolitan members of the early Church. Scholars of archeology and ancient literature have ranked him among the top historians of his time period, besides noting the outstanding Greek prose style and technical accuracy of his accounts of Christ's life and the apostles' missionary journeys.Other students of biblical history adduce from Luke's writings that he was the only evangelist to incorporate the personal testimony of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose role in Christ's life emerges most clearly in his gospel. Tradition credits him with painting several icons of Christ's mother, and one of the sacred portraits ascribed to him known by the title Salvation of the Roman People-- survives to this day in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.Some traditions hold that Luke became a direct disciple of Jesus before his ascension, while others hold that he became a believer only afterward. After St. Paul's conversion, Luke accompanied him as his personal physician-- and, in effect, as a kind of biographer, since the journeys of Paul on which Luke accompanied him occupy a large portion of the Acts of the Apostles. Luke probably wrote this text, the final narrative portion of the New Testament, in the city of Rome where the account ends.Luke was also among the only companions of Paul who did not abandon him during his final imprisonment and death in Rome. After the martyrdom of St. Paul in the year 67, St. Luke is said to have preached elsewhere throughout the Mediterranean, and possibly died as a martyr. However, even tradition is unclear on this point. We have only edited the text for grammar and spelling). The first time I saw a ghost I was around 10 I was laying down in my room and I was facing my door and I was able to see into the other room. That is when I saw something fly around the light in the other room then go through the wall and come back. Then when I was 14 I woke up in the middle of the night and my closet doors were open and two shadow people walked out of my closet. My room was completely dark and they were dark then the darkness around them to where it was like a void of black that made them up they walked out of the closet and walked to my bed then they set down on the edge of my bed and the one closest to me reached out to me that is when I hid under the covers about. In that same year, my dad was seeing shadow people walking back and forth from their bathroom to their walk-in closet. He would set up and talk/yell at them asking them what they want and why they were there. The shadow people stopped when my dad made my mom put away an old quilt that my great great aunt made that my mom had inherited. But that did not stop the strange things in my room or house. Things would come on automatically in my room at night and my remotes for my stereo and tv would be somewhere else in my room in the morning for an example one night just my subwoofer came on and all you could hear was the bass when I went to grab my remote off my nightstand it was not there it was over on my desk and I know that I left it on my nightstand when I went to bed because I was listing to music. I then found out when I was about 16 that my grandad had died in that room before I was born. He had a heart attack in his sleep one year before I was born. Then every time I had friends over to stay the night some of them would always complain that they felt like something was watching them all night. When we were younger, my wife had similar experiences when she would come over to spend the night. At that time my bed was in the corner of my room and when she stayed the night she always wanted to be up against the wall because she would see shadow people and always feel like something was always watching her. I had an experience in the woods with my son & ex-husband. The whole day was weird. It started out with a bloody guy walking out of the woods into a small campground on the mountain (Erwin, TN). We were the only ones camping since it was mid-September. That night we heard some weird noises So weird we went to sit in the vehicle. That's when I noticed 100s of pairs of eyes surrounding us. The funny part was they were all the same height. Now that was my 2nd clue these weren't any type of animals bc of their being so many, if it were animals they would vary in age & heights. The first clue I got was there were SO many. Nothing runs in a pack that size except ants or bugs. So many. But these were exactly the same height. I wanted to know what it was. We set in the dark in the jeep. Every time I would flick the headlights the eyes would disappear. When I shut them off they would appear & continue to come closer to our car. I was so confused bc I had NEVER seen anything like this b4 & I have camped all my life. So I wanted to know. I let whatever it was getting all the way up the front bumper of the car so I could flick the lights & see what they were...mind u we were backed into the spot & there was a gravel rd & it was right in front of us so whatever it was had to cross the rd to get up to our bumper. I flicked the lights. NOTHING there..but you could see the bushes & grass moving across the gravel rd in front of us. I did this more than a few times to try & see what they were but nothing. Then in the dark, the eyes were visible. I narrowed it down to aliens or fairies or something that nobody obviously talks about bc I've told countless people this story & my ex husband & son both witnessed it so I'm not crazy. We weren't drinking or anything. But I have wondered for about 7 years what in (or out) of this world I saw. But you couldn't imagine how many sets of eyes there were. It was mind blowing especially when I did the headlights bc whatever it was either had a cloaking ability or was faster than the speed of light. We never did get bk out of the car to pack up. We left everything set up. We didn't go bk & get it or nothing. Hello horizontal lovers. horizontal is consensual eavesdropping on conversations about intimacy of all kinds, recorded while lying down, wearing robes. In this and the following episode, I lie down with Kai Mata, Indonesia’s rainbow-toting, openly LGBTQ+ singer-songwriter. She is a thoughtful rock star, an articulate activist, a love advocate, an outspoken woman with a bamboo guitar living a love life of liberation in a country that expects its women to be neither outspoken nor liberated. I love her. And her meter-long hair. Kai wears maroon and black almost exclusively, right down to her motorbike helmet. She displays or wears a rainbow flag at every single show, at every single gig, and she will continue to do so until all of her people are free to love who they love. She battles internet trolls, social media harassment, hate messages, homophobia, discrimination, and erasure by her culture of origin on a daily basis. She is publicly out in a country that persecutes its LGBTQ+ citizens. She is out for all of her fellow Indonesians who cannot be yet, in the hopes of a new era in which they all can feel safe to be. By the way, she’s 22 years-old. I first encountered Kai through a Facebook post she made, raising awareness of the persecution of anybody with a queer identity in Indonesia, and the government’s attempt to slip their discrimination into law. These are Kai’s words, posted on February 21st, 2020: I need your help. Indonesia is trying to label all LGBTQ+ people as deviants dangerous to society, legally requiring us to go to conversion therapy. I am one of the only publicly LGBTQ+ Indonesian Women
