What if the biggest thing holding you back wasn't external at all—but something within you? What if success wasn't about grinding harder, but about leading yourself better? In this episode of the Productivity Smarts Podcast, Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Doug Schmidt, self-leadership expert and author of The Power of Self-Leadership, to unpack the game-changing principles from his book. But this isn't just about productivity hacks—it's about reshaping the way you think, work, and lead. Doug's story is one of transformation, not just achievement. He gets real about the struggles that shaped him, the mentors who pushed him forward, and the powerful realization that self-leadership isn't about doing more—it's about becoming more. He dives into the importance of knowing your strengths and weaknesses, mastering your mindset, and developing habits that set high achievers apart. If you've ever felt stuck, like you're capable of more but unsure how to get there, this episode is for you. Get ready to rethink self-leadership, break through barriers, and take control of your future.  What We Discuss [02:01] Introduction to Doug Schmidt [06:05] The power of mentoring [08:43] Defining self-leadership [15:48] Top habits for productivity [21:46] Mindfulness and meditation [25:50] Neuroscience of meditation [28:29] Overcoming procrastination as a habit [30:56] The Pomodoro technique [35:05] Self-leadership and networking [36:17] The power of gratitude [41:19] The law of reciprocity [42:01] Closing remarks Notable Quotes [05:14] “The number one thing that's helped me the most is developing role models and mentors. Learning is such a critical habit; wherever you are in life, just keep on learning. That's a superpower we can all do.” – Doug Schmidt [09:16] “If I can't lead myself, if I can't manage myself, I can't lead or manage other people. So, let's start right there. If I'm out of control emotionally, have poor habits, or am a toxic person, that's going to impact how I lead others.” – Doug Schmidt [12:25] “One of the biggest mistakes I've made career-wise is not understanding what my strengths are. I needed someone else to show me what I was really good at, and from that point on, I changed my career direction.” – Doug Schmidt [26:57] “We can do the same thing these great athletes and leaders do. You might not be in history books, but you can improve your leadership skills, mental strength, grit, and resilience. You can do that too.” – Doug Schmidt [35:10] “I send personalized thank you notes. It cost me a dollar and a half, but it shows appreciation and gratitude. It's a small gesture that can open doors and build connections.”– Doug Schmidt Our Guest Douglas L. Schmidt is a firm believer in the power of self-leadership. He advocates for personal discovery, and the idea that obstacles can be powerful teachers. They form the foundation of Doug's approach to life and work, driving a passion for helping others unlock their potential. The goal is simple: to celebrate the spirit of homebrewers. The competition gives homebrewers a chance to receive invaluable feedback on their entries and also recognizes the most outstanding, world-class homebrewed beer, mead and cider. Final round winners are revealed at Homebrew Con.Over the years, we’ve seen homebrewers push the envelope and blur the lines between professional and amateur brewing. As homebrewers, you lead the way with style awareness and ingenuity, all while pushing homebrewing into uncharted territory.Check out https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/national-homebrew-competition/Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? As you'll hear, this has been a project that Doug, his wife Shari and Rick have been working on for several years. I hope that hearing about this successful program will inspire you to promote something similar in your hometown.  I had a conversation with Doug on his health journey that you can find above in the embedded player or HERE. After having 2 cardiac events, he realized something needed to be done. He went plant-based, lost weight and is now paying it forward and teaching others about this life saving way of eating and living. Doug's Forks Over Knives Article:  https://www.forksoverknives.com/heart-attack-plant-based-diet/#gs.8j46qx LiveKindly Article on Doug's Success: https://www.livekindly.co/new-york-state-school-districts-vegan-good-life-challenge/

Asha Saxena discusses the important topic of building business value using data as a core element with Doug Schmidt, a Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and an entrepreneur. In this episode, we ask a very important question: can we lead with innovation using data strategy to drive business strategy? Company leaders put a lot of emphasis on business strategy and not enough on data strategy. Even when leaders track key metrics, they often measure the wrong ones when they lag data strategy behind their decisions. How can we use data to drive the culture of our businesses? Listen in to find out how. What you'll learn in this episode: Using business strategy to show you where to start and which route you should take to the destination How mistakes often occur because businesses are operating within a culture that is not driven by data How successful people in the business world tend to focus more on the results rather than the process and methodology and how focusing too much on the results can hinder one's ability to deliver on the expectations they set for themselves The stigma that technology and those who work in this industry have of not being collaborative and not understanding how a business truly works Why technology is playing a greater and greater role in businesses with each passing year How technology has essentially depreciated, and in some cases, eradicated the world's oldest businesses The ways technology has changed how we consume media and how companies are targeting audiences for advertising Ways to contact Doug: Twitter: @bigdougschmidt

The book contains a pattern language for distributed systems. It contains 114 patterns that had been published before by many different other authors. The patterns have been rewritten to form a consistent language. We basically talked through the different sections of the book, which gives a really good overview over the challenges and the solutions of building distributed systems. These sections include From Mud to Structure, Distribution Infrastructure, Event Demultiplexing and Dispatching, Interface Partitioning, Component Patitioning, Application Contrl, Concurrency, Synchronization, Object Interaction, Adaptazion and Extension, Modal Behaviour, Resource Management and finally, Database Access. The book references several other previous works (as listed below). Interestingly, many of these referenced works and authors have also been discussed previously on the podcast.
