You might not be in history books, but you can improve your leadership skills, mental strength, grit, and resilience. We also rejoin John McCown as he embarks on his first journey to Camp Hale, witnessing the stark contrasts among the soldiers who would form the nucleus of this iconic unit. Guest Speaker, Pastor Doug Schmidt, used scripture to explain three reasons we don't have to be afraid, no matter what is going on in our lives. The focus scripture was Isaiah 43:1-7. We live in a society of information overload! If you don't know something, you google it. Resources are endless. Yet we find that, more often than not, more knowledge leads to even more questions. And we find ourselves frustrated when we can't get the answer we want RIGHT NOW. Today we continue our message series, Smoke & Mirrors: Deciphering Truth in a World of "truths", by looking to the book of Ecclesiastes to see that a “perfect” understanding of life will always be out of reach. Where does this leave us? To trust in God! Listen with us in today's message, Fallen Mind: Intellectualism, as we encounter the wisdom of God and realize only He is all-knowing!

Sermon, "Christ's Plan For The Church," by Doug Schmidt, Executive Director of Barnabas Ministries, during the Morning Worship Service on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at Calvary Baptist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan
— “Changing to a whole food plant-based lifestyle will open a whole world that you never knew existed. You will learn to like new foods and feel better than you have felt in a long time.” Valeria Teles interviews Doug Schmidt — the author of “Eat More Plants Love: Recipes for a Good Life.” Doug Schmidt, a veteran teacher, suffered a widowmaker heart attack at age 49. Not wanting to spend the rest of his life on medications, he sought answers. After finding the book, “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, he changed his lifetime of eating habits. He lost 60 pounds and ran his first marathon at age 58. Doug now leads the annual “Good Life Challenge” for teachers and staff for over 75 school districts and small businesses in New York. The challenge helps educate people about the benefits of plant-based nutrition and was featured on Good Morning America. What began as a goal to help prevent Doug from having future heart attacks has led them to now help others. They found out that not only does a plant-based lifestyle prevent and reverse heart disease, the leading killer of 1 in 3 Americans, it also helps with type 2 diabetes, autoimmune issues, kidney disease and most chronic diseases from which Americans suffer. It even helps fight some cancers such as breast, prostate and colon cancer. Doug, and his wife, Shari manages the Facebook group, Eat Plants Love, sharing their knowledge and expertise. This is Doug and Shari's 2nd cookbook. “Eat Plants Love - Recipes for a Good Life”, was their first cookbook. Doug has a master's degree in Special Education and has completed the Rouxbe Plant Based Professional Certification. He was formerly a professional baker who worked for one of the most prestigious grocery chains in America as their bakery trainer. Asha Saxena discusses the important topic of building business value using data as a core element with Doug Schmidt, a Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and an entrepreneur. In this episode, we ask a very important question: can we lead with innovation using data strategy to drive business strategy? Company leaders put a lot of emphasis on business strategy and not enough on data strategy. Even when leaders track key metrics, they often measure the wrong ones when they lag data strategy behind their decisions. How can we use data to drive the culture of our businesses? Listen in to find out how. What you'll learn in this episode: Using business strategy to show you where to start and which route you should take to the destination How mistakes often occur because businesses are operating within a culture that is not driven by data How successful people in the business world tend to focus more on the results rather than the process and methodology and how focusing too much on the results can hinder one's ability to deliver on the expectations they set for themselves The stigma that technology and those who work in this industry have of not being collaborative and not understanding how a business truly works Why technology is playing a greater and greater role in businesses with each passing year How technology has essentially depreciated, and in some cases, eradicated the world's oldest businesses The ways technology has changed how we consume media and how companies are targeting audiences for advertising Ways to contact Doug: Twitter: @bigdougschmidt
This week’s guest is Doug Schmidt who lives in Rochester, NY. Doug was previously a bit of a foodie and talks about how he would eat wheels of brie as an appetizer. Doug ended up having a heart attack, blockage in his widow maker, and told me that only 10% of people with this heart attack survive. He has since completely changed his diet, lost 60lbs, ran his first marathon of his life, and was even recently named PETA’s sexiest vegan male over 50. We have a great conversation and I hope that you enjoy. Thanks so much for tuning in.
After having a heart attack in 2008, at 49 years old and 225 lbs, Doug Schmidt knew that he needed to make serious changes to his health and life. What happened next was more powerful than he could have ever imagined. After transitioning to a whole food, plant-based diet, Doug lost 60 lbs and regained his health, but the positive impact didn't just stop there. He is now helping over 1300 colleagues do the same. His story has caught the attention of many mainstream media outlets, including his recent feature in Good Morning America. Doug's story is extremely inspiring and excited to continue to watch his powerful, positive impact on the world. Excited to share our conversation! Keep up with Doug on Social Media! In this Episode we talked about the new POSA 4 book which has recently been published. We talk to two of the authors, Kevlin Henney and Frank Buschmann (the third author, Doug Schmidt was not available - and he had also been on the podcast a couple of times :-)). The book contains a pattern language for distributed systems. It contains 114 patterns that had been published before by many different other authors. The patterns have been rewritten to form a consistent language. We basically talked through the different sections of the book, which gives a really good overview over the challenges and the solutions of building distributed systems. These sections include From Mud to Structure, Distribution Infrastructure, Event Demultiplexing and Dispatching, Interface Partitioning, Component Patitioning, Application Contrl, Concurrency, Synchronization, Object Interaction, Adaptazion and Extension, Modal Behaviour, Resource Management and finally, Database Access. The book references several other previous works (as listed below). Interestingly, many of these referenced works and authors have also been discussed previously on the podcast. Here are the back references: Domain Driven Design, Eric Evans Messaging Patterns, Gregor Hohpe POSA 2 Patterns, Doug Schmidt Concurrency: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and the interview with Goetz and Holmes Remoting Patterns Part 1 and Part 2 POSA3, Resource Management

This Episode is a round table discussion about Ultra-Large Scale Systems. In 2006, a number of authors (among them our guests Linda Northrop, Doug Schmidt, Kevin Sullivan, and Gregor Kiczales) have produced a report that addressed the following question: Given the issues with today's software engineering, how can we build the systems of the future that are likely to have billions of lines of code? In this episode, our guests discuss many of the issues that arise from this kind of system and provide an overview of the research areas that should be investigated in order to tackle the challenge. If you want to get more detailed information, you can read the ULS Report (PDF).
