In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explore how the nervous system impacts fat loss and how certain behaviors and supplements can accelerate fat burning. I explain how non-exercise movements like fidgeting and shivering trigger adrenaline to boost fat metabolism. I also examine the impact of exercise intensity and fasted workouts on fat burning, and how supplements such as caffeine, GLP-1 and berberine can further support fat loss. These science-based tools go beyond traditional calorie counting to enhance metabolism and improve body composition. Huberman Lab Essentials are short episodes (approximately 30 minutes) focused on essential science and protocol takeaways from past Huberman Lab episodes. Send us a textIf you're a listener of mine or in any way interested in fitness, I'm sure you have an app for counting and tracking your calories floating around your phone—I know I do.But where did this idea come from? Let's go back in history (cue the cheeky rewind sounds)... It's 1909, and women can't even vote yet, but Lulu Peters was a rebel with a medical degree and a dream: to teach America how to eat and maybe—just maybe—shrink her “too-too solid bod.”Fast forward to 1918, and boom! She publishes Diet & Health: With the Key to Calories—the first bestselling diet book. Suddenly, bread isn't just bread; it's 100 calories. Pie? 300. Food had become numbers. Delish.Around the same time, the industrial revolution told us, "Hey, you're basically a machine!"—and machines need fuel control. Being “super skinny” went from a rich person's nightmare to the total dream. The bathroom scale arrived right on time, gleefully offering up your daily measure of self-worth, and just like that, thinness became a moral virtue. The only way to lose weight is by maintaining a caloric deficit—that's an irrefutable fact. But is counting every calorie really the best path? Counting can be tricky, with user error, inaccurate labels, and wildly variable “calories out” due to body type and countless other factors. We aren't just calorie-burning machines; we're way more complex. Yet, the impulse to quantify everything still has a hold on us.With my programs, I aim to help pave the way to sustainable habits that naturally support a deficit: eating loads of veggies, waiting to eat until you're actually hungry, and managing stress. Boring? Perhaps. But here's the twist: it actually f*cking works. What's Inside:Who invented the calorie and why does it matter so much? The historical path that led to THIN IS IN.What's the problem with relying on calorie counting as your only form of weight loss?Sustainable habits that stack alongside a healthy caloric deficit.Imagine a world without calories. Maybe we'd have less highly processed, low-calorie snacks? Or maybe the thinness of your body would exemplify your moral value? The truth is calories are important, but knowledge and positive habits make all the difference. Are you a calorie-counting junkie?  Let me know on Insta!Mentioned In This Episode:Transform Your Body & Habits In 28 Days.  Guaranteed. I'm sure at one point or another we have all wanted to lose weight and everyone has heard the same boring crap. Eat less, move more. Although it is much more complex than that… (Basal Metabolic Rate accounts for almost all our calories and just eating less is the jam, providing we can avoid eating disorders). I've heard these all:* cut your carb intake* fasted cardio* don't eat with a screen* eat slower* don't eat junk food* you can eat junk food as long as its within your calories* portion sizes* plate sizesHave I missed any?Now the main issue for me is always my hunger! Maybe I was born with an appetite or maybe I'm a glutton but I always have seconds, I always want more and I always have room for dessert. My wife's parents literally call me “Fan tong” which is Cantonese for “rice bucket”

I used to think my body was simply a machine, and you just need to hit a few buttons to lose weight... Hit the button for increasing calories burned by moving your booty; hit the button for decreasing calories in your pie hole. AKA Calories In vs. Calories Out. CICO is a law, and it is true. BUT our bodies are more like complex computers… there's more to our programming than meets the eye. To lose weight we need to dial in 3 things: Your diet - specifically how much calories you consume, your activity level - how much you move around each day to burn calories, and the 3rd piece of the weight loss puzzle is the one that most doctors, nutritionists, trainers, and people miss…  The metabolism. And I'm not talking about that thing that you believe you are born with and can't change. When people go on a diet or start an exercise program and they have #1 and #2 in place, but they don't lose any weight, or maybe it moves a bit at first but then stalls out fast… this is often due to today's topic: metabolic damage. We'll discuss who metabolic damage affects the most, signs and symptoms of metabolic damage, take you back in time to my middle school days for a useful analogy, and more! Time Stamps: (1:32) Goodbye Kitchen Recording Studio (5:15) The 3 Dials to Weight Loss (6:32) Your Metabolism (8:24) Prospect Example (10:12) Metabolic Damage (14:56) Untreated Hormonal Issues (17:52) Middle School Trombone Days (24:55) Taking The Next Step With Us---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? It's time to become the ultimate coach and make a profound impact in the world of fitness. In this episode, Scott Schutte and Dr. Janine Stichter, certified personal trainers and experts in fitness psychology, take you through the three essential phases that clients often find themselves in during their fitness endeavors. We understand that everyone desires results promptly, but sustainability is key. Therefore, it's important to guide our clients in determining their ideal approach based on their unique personalities and the season of their life they are currently in.The first phase we explore is the "Walk" phase. This phase involves making small changes gradually and adopting a slow-and-steady approach towards achieving fitness goals. We emphasize the importance of defining this phase clearly, aligning client and coach expectations, and recognizing that clients may shift between this and the other phases based on their circumstances and motivations.Next, we delve into the "Jog" phase. Here, clients are ready to make notable changes in their routines and activities to propel themselves closer to their fitness objectives. It's an exciting stage that requires dedication and a willingness to step out of one's comfort zone. As fitness and wellness coaches, we provide the necessary guidance to ensure clients clearly understand and have the tools to execute key changes to achieve optimal results during this phase.Lastly, we explore the "Sprint" phase. This phase is characterized by a total commitment to overhauling one's lifestyle and pushing boundaries for rapid transformations. Although it may be intense, this phase can yield incredible results in a short period. We discuss when this phase is and is not ideal toward their fitness goals. We also highlight that this cannot and should not be the only type of phase clients and coaches pursue.Interested in BECOMING the ULTIMATE FITNESS COACH?! Find out more here

Quick Gains Are Quick Losses With Chevy

Today with us on the Incite Change Podcast is Chevy Philips, a good friend, and colleague of Mauro's. Chevy is a Mechanical Engineer and IFBB pro athlete who has competed on big stages. Always leading an active life growing up in martial art and track & field, Chevy started working out in the gym as a skinny teenager focused on becoming bigger.  Chevy moved to Canada in 2009 to pursue his Undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering. He had a pretty active life in college and continued on this path of fitness after school. Engineering has influenced his training style in terms of applying ideas of mechanics and moments to the movement of his body. Nowadays he's a pro athlete and fitness trainer. Interestingly, it took him 7 shows over 2 years to win his pro card. Chevy shares a story of how getting laid off from his engineering job pushed him to pursue a career as a fitness trainer. Nutrition plays a big role in your fitness goals. Whether you're building fat or building muscle, it has a lot to do with what energy you're using in the gym. The simple way to understand it is to increase the food you are eating if you want to gain weight and vice versa. “Calories in Calories Out” - that's the name of the game. Most people try cutting water weight to get a quick win which is not sustainable. Real change doesn't happen quickly. Quick gains are not sustainable; they are like gambling. When it comes to training clients, a major thing to look out for is commitment. Chevy advises people to focus on inputs and lifestyle, and output will take care of itself. By focusing on lifestyle inputs to hit your goals, you are more likely to maintain them.Chevy loves to work with clients that want to exercise as a part of life, people who are making changes and see the value of exercise and what effect sleep and nutrition have on them. One thing to avoid is overloading your clients too soon. Help them enjoy the process and not make it feel like a chore. In doing so, they are more likely to stick with it and achieve their goals. Most times it's not the aesthetics for them but just the feeling of being able to function, move, and use fitness as a vehicle to a more fulfilled life. When training, make sure to start with building up with what you can do. Don't try to get results right from the beginning. Just be consistent and eventually you will see the difference. Finally, Chevy encourages us to appreciate life, think outside the box, deal with things as they come, and remember it's never too late to start something. More thinking is wasting time, so take action. Modern day first world peasants eat so much better than ye old day kings, but at what cost? A discussion filled with food, alcohol, baseball, fat shaming, Pontiac disgust, and frog legs!   SHOW NOTES: Diet of the Kings  Rarity (100 dollar bottle of wine) study  Rarity makes everything better  Kobe Steak is delicious  Poverty, Minnesota, Nutrition, and Food Deserts:  Honey Crisp is the best apple ever Life expectancy of the ye old times Typhoid Mary We are getting fatter faster.  Paleo Diet  Calories In and Calories Out  Sugar Tax, cause why not?   Variety is the spice of life Cricket Burger needs to take a page from the Potato Marketing Campaign  Minnesota frogs have 5 or more legs Unfermented cheese, why is it illegal in the US?    K Sera’s Afterthoughts: Rarity or arbitrary value MIGHT make things “better” in a subjective way. I’m willing to admit that perception of a thing can be considered to be an attribute of a thing. Like the placebo effect… kinda.   Still love burgers   Spices are the spice of life.   I have since learned that Japan had cattle brought over from China around the second century AD, but were largely used as draft animals up until around the Meiji Restoration (1868). There was actually a ban on eating certain kinds of meat in Japan and until the Emperor, Musuhito decided to lift the ban in 1872 - likely because beef is delicious. As bad as some of the things are in the world, how unfair and depressing… I can still say that there isn’t another time period before now that I would prefer over the present. I really enjoy the variety and general affordability of foods and spices - and let’s be honest, alcohol - that we have access to.    Speaking of access to alcohol - I died a little on the inside when I said “They don’t lack [dedication and discipline] they just don’t have enough of it…” - Let’s blame that statement on my beverage consumption that evening. (Oh addictions, how you ruin us.) I guess what I meant to say there is that losing weight requires discipline along with the mental and physical resources to care about “holding the line,” so to speak. It is incredibly difficult to combat your desire for easy, efficient energy over a desire to maintain a healthy weight when, say, other factors in your life are taking away your energy to achieve long term goals.   As Micah was implying, poverty is a huge stress factor in a person’s life. The stress of living paycheck to paycheck and not knowing if you’ll make enough to pay rent influences your choices and takes from your resources - like time. If you are working a minimum wage service job (or 2 or even 3), and you want to live in an ok apartment, you're probably working more than 40 hours a week just to make ends meet. Your time is way more limited. Are you going to spend your limited hours cooking a nutritious meal? Probably not. Probably, you are going to take five to ten minutes on your way home to pick up fast food because the cost of resources (time, money, effort) are low and the immediate rewards are high (tasty, high calorie, filling). When you are poor, your vision of the future can shrink. You live more day-to-day and aren’t always able to put your energy into a longer view.   So, maybe what I’m saying is, it’s a little too simple to say an overweight person lacks discipline. If other factors in your life are drawing on that finite energy reserve that you put towards goal setting and basic needs, it isn’t necessarily solely that persons ‘fault’ for not having ‘enough’ willpower and dedication to losing weight. And there’s probably some genetic factors that influence your weight and some upbringing factors as well. It may boil down to discipline in the end, but life and situational factors can make this issue more complicated. Yeah.   Church of the Obviei (Obvi-eye?) - we could make this a thing, right? Then we could call ourselves a non-profit and have rituals where we all consume illicit cricket burgers every Wednesday.     Phillip's Afterthoughts: I didn't even discuss Fried Chicken!

Richard Morris and Carl Franklin discuss the theory of CICO (Calories In vs. Calories Out), a very popular theory about how to lose weight: If you simply create a caloric deficit by expending more calories via exercise than you eat you will lose weight. Does it work? If not, why? Does your body utilize every calorie that you eat? Are all calories burned at the same rate all the time? Does exercise increase or decrease your metabolic rate (calories out)? These are the questions that the dudes tackle on this very technical and even more amazing episode. Errata: An alert listener, Matthew Whited, pointed out that it's gas, not fat, that makes stools float. Reference: http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM197205042861804

Preliminary Health Care Podcast
Eating Less and Exercising More = Disordered Eating

Preliminary Health Care Podcast

The most common weight-loss advice is to “eat less & exercise more” (ELEM). On a very playground toy sort of way, this can make sense: something must become of the food you eat, either it is expended or stored; if you don’t expend as much as you eat, then, it must be stored. The problem, though, is that your body’s management of energy is far too complex to be explained in this simple teeter-totter model. The actual physiology as to why/how is riddled throughout the site (check out the bottom of the page for related articles) as well as in our full Fat-Loss eBook (Dec 1, 2014), but briefly: It’s incorrect to assume that fat-cells are some passive dump-sites for excess fuel, or that physical activity is necessarily fueled by leaking fat-cells. Rather, fat-cells have a unique physiology which must be understood in order to determine why fat-cells are reduced and how you can affect that…and it has little to do with how much you eat/exercise! But even if fat-cells did work this way, your body has countless redundant mechanisms which aim to maintain adequate fuel to your body; in essence, ELEM causes your body to expend less energy and compels you to eat. So even if you could be sure the energy-deficit imposed by ELEM was compensated by reducing fat-cells (which again, isn’t necessarily true), it wouldn’t matter because your body’s expenditure of energy plummet—and your motivation to eat would steadily increase until you began bingeing. And that’s the focal point off this article. A Brief Model of Eating Behavior In order to understand the rest of this article, you have to accept that eating-behavior is NOT a matter of choice. Sure, you can decide what/if to eat at any given moment—and this is a difficult idea to accept. But it might help to understand eating-behavior like blinking-behavior; at any given moment, you can choose to/how to blink your eyes or not, yet you blink your eyes all day long without even noticing—furthermore, at a certain point, no matter how hard you try, you cannot help but blink. So if dry eyeballs is the insurmountable cause for blinking, what motivates you to eat? At this point, it might be helpful to mention the actual system in your brain which controls eating-behavior—called, the “Limbic System.” The Limbic System as well as the entire topic of eating-behavior, are covered in more depth in the full Fat-Loss eBook—here, it’s only important to understand the Limbic System integrates information from your mind, body, and environment to yield motivated behaviors, and the major signal to your Limbic System to motivate eating is stress. We generally associate “stress” with the emotional experience of enduring a challenge or hardship. However, your body experiences stress in many forms: emotional, physical, social, etc. It may not seem intuitive that stress would be the major motivator to eat—you would assume we would be motivated to eat based on some balance similar to the Calories-In, Calories-Out model…but we don’t! Rather, stress knocks the chemicals of your Limbic System out of whack in such a way that is uncomfortable, but which can be restored by eating; eating, then is “pleasurable,” because it relieves stress—the greater stress to which you’re exposed, the more pleasure you will seek to restore balance. Let’s consider this in the full context of ELEM, an unrelenting stressor of ever-increasing magnitude. ELEM Leads to Disordered Eating Many hormonal events occur during stress, one very important being the release of “cortisol.” When cortisol is initially released, it helps you to overcome a stressor by increasing your physical and mental capabilities. Once the stressor is resolved, cortisol remains elevated to initiate recovery from that stressor—which necessarily requires eating…which cortisol helps to motivate. In the short term, then, stress eventually causes you to seek food. This urge might be ignored for a while, but forever resisting and ever-strengthening urge is futile—especially when you consider that ELEM and stress leave you ever more fatigued and motivated to relieve your suffering (by eating to chemically rebalance). This is compounded with time because cortisol actually increases the neural pathways in your Limbic System which motivate you to eat. Eventually, when your ability to sustain the unsustainable inevitably falters, ELEM ends amid ravenous wanting and binge-behavior. Not only does ELEM subconsciously lead to disordered eating, through your suffering and bingeing, sense of failure and shame, an unhealthy relationship with food grows! Without understanding the basic physiology behind fat-cells, energy-expenditure, eating-behavior, etc., others as well as yourself generally blame you for some sort of failing. But you have not failed! You have been failed by those who made you believe ELEM was the solution.

Good & Bad Calories (starts at 4:50) Ever since the 1970s, the rise of obesity in the United States has an epidemic. Researchers around the world are trying desperately to figure out why so many of us get fat, and what we can do to change that.  A large amount of funding, and support from public health policy, goes toward the hypothesis that we get fat because we eat too many calories and do not exercise enough; when someone eats more calories than they need, the instructions go, they should exercise.  That's "Calories in, Calories Out."  But recently, an expert with a different point of view spoke to a packed audience of doctors, staff and medical students at the University of Colorado Medical Center.  The expert is Gary Taubes, the author of the New York Times bestsellers "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat".  Taubes is also the recipient of angel investor funds: $60 million to devote to research to better understand how the kinds of foods we eat affect our metabolism.  Central to Taubes' ideas is the opinion that "Calories in, Calories Out" simply cannot be enough to explain, or help people, maintain a healthy weight.  In this feature, we provide an excerpt from his talk at the CU Medical School. PhD Comics (starts at 13:50) Unless you work in science, you may not always be aware of the humor that goes on among scientists and what the culture is like.  So what better way to show the comic parts of science than by way of a comic strip?  One of the more well-known science-oriented comic strips is called "PhD Comics" and is written by Jorge Cham, who is trained as an engineer, holds a bachelors degree from Georgia Tech and a PhD in robotics from Stanford.  He also was an instructor at Caltech, a researcher in a neuroscience lab, where he studied brain-and-machine interfaces, and he also has a chemistry background.  So he has a wide set of experiences to draw on...literally DRAW on...for his comic.  We talk with Jorge Cham to find out more about the comic and other ways the scientist comic artist unveils the secret lives of scientists and, in particular, science grad students.
