I brought Rachel back on the podcast because she's an awesome friend of mine, but also because the frameworks and lessons she outlines in her book have guided her and her team in building Abode Luxury Rentals into one of the most respected vacation rental management companies in the country. Early in this conversation, Rachel tells a story about a guest family that called her team constantly with complaints — and then asked to extend their stay. What her team discovered when they stopped being defensive and started being curious became the foundation for everything she's built since. She breaks down the framework behind it: three deceptively simple commitments she and her co-authors spent years uncovering — show up, make room, and build belonging. We get into the service recovery paradox, a concept Tim Ferriss personally pushed her to put in the book, and why managing a mistake well can create a more loyal customer than a flawless experience ever could. Rachel makes a sharp case for why outsourcing guest communication to AI might be the single worst place to cut corners, and where she thinks AI actually belongs in vacation rentals instead. We talk about the real cost-benefit of writing a book while running a business, what a breathing coach taught her about leading under pressure, and why presence — the kind where the rest of the world genuinely disappears — might be the most underrated competitive advantage in hospitality leadership right now. Friends, you're going to love this conversation. Be sure to order her book, "Please Do Disturb," wherever you get your books. You can pre-order it now, and there's a link in the show notes below. Peak Happiness at what age? Birthday Chaos, Boomer Complaints & Uncrustable News

The Rizzuto Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2026 49:58

Happy Thursday... unless you're still under 47.This episode starts with stormy weather and surprisingly good moods before spiraling into one of those classic Rizz Show conversations where absolutely nothing stays on the rails. One minute everyone's discussing thunderstorms, Jason Sklar stopping by the show, and preparations for Rizz's upcoming birthday celebration. The next minute, an unexpected study claims that 47 is the happiest age of your life, immediately putting Rizz under the microscope as the crew debates whether he's actually become a happier human being over the years. That naturally leads to a full-on birthday debate. Are you someone who celebrates for an entire week with parties, brunches, vacations, and enough cake to feed a small town? Or are you the type who hopes nobody notices your birthday at all? The crew dives into the psychology behind birthday people versus birthday avoiders, sharing stories about how their own families handled birthdays growing up and how the show's attitude toward celebrating has completely changed over the years.Along the way, they confess the embarrassing things they learned way too late in life. From believing Elton John was blind because of his sunglasses to confusing Jimmy Buffett with Warren Buffett, nobody escapes the roast. Lauren admits her biggest regret is never paying attention in history class, while everyone else piles on with stories that somehow become even more ridiculous. Then it's time for one of the greatest grocery store discussions ever recorded. Boomers' biggest complaints about modern shopping somehow evolve into a business pitch involving off-road grocery carts, dune buggies with shopping baskets, lift kits for grabbing cereal off the top shelf, Bluetooth speakers, themed vehicles, and of course, an extensive update on the latest developments in Uncrustable technology. Yes... refrigerated Uncrustables become breaking news. Yes... everyone takes it completely seriously. The chaos keeps rolling with questionable life advice passed down from older generations, hilarious family sayings that somehow stuck forever, and a continuation of yesterday's impossible moral dilemma involving crimes, saving dogs, and making the world a better place in the weirdest ways imaginable.Later, the conversation turns surprisingly wholesome as the crew discusses new research into helping dogs live healthier, longer lives. Would you pay thousands of dollars for a few more healthy years with your best friend? Everyone has a different answer, and the discussion gets unexpectedly heartfelt before immediately swerving back into shark attacks, dangerous animals across America, and why Missouri's deadliest creature isn't nearly as exciting as you'd hope.As always, the conversation refuses to stay in one lane for more than a few minutes. That's exactly what makes this daily comedy show feel like you're hanging out with friends who accidentally turn every headline into an hour of laughs, random tangents, and conversations nobody saw coming.Whether you're here for birthday debates, grocery store adventures, ridiculous hypotheticals, weird news, celebrity mentions, or the latest in frozen sandwich innovation, Episode 49 delivers another unpredictable ride from The Rizzuto Show. Thanks for listening to another daily comedy show with the crew. On Behalf of HR Realizing Its Necessary Potential - Not as a Complaint Department

Pat Garland is an HR leader, author, consultant and Adjunct Instructor at Loyola University's Quinlan School of Business (in Chicago). Her career has spanned senior posts at Jim Beam, Anixter Intl, where she played a leading role in the company's success over several decades. Pat is also an equestrian who finds dealing with horses easier than dealing with people (whose motivations often aren't as clear, even to themselves).  Too often the Human Resources (HR) function at a company gets reduced to being a “hall monitor” or “complaint department” in the words of today's spirited and pragmatic guest: Pat Garland. HR, when it realizes its potential, should function not as some quasi-clerical payroll and benefits-focused operation (though those functions are vital) but as an enabler of business growth through respecting talent. Most importantly for HR, Garland observes, is starting by understanding the actual business, and then helping to design the flow of people and ideas that enhance its success. Note she doesn't mention policies. Because she's anti-policy. So she fit in beautifully at Anixter, which was high on accountability but allergic to running a business on policies. The Anixter culture understood, as Pat clearly does, that everything starts with trusting people. And building talent starts with getting people into roles where the work comes naturally because its a fit. For what kind of tasks are they best suited? Ultimately, the HR bottom line is pretty simple: back to “trust your people.” Enable them to grow, rather than creating rules that allow leaders and managers to cast the blame on HR when things don't work. The real need in any business is for leaders to lead and coach people well. A great HR leader is part psychologist, part lawyer, part actuary, part accountant, and 100% a humanist. Pat clearly is the latter. And her book, 33 Ways Not to Screw Up HR (NetWorlding Publishing, 2022), proves it. Real Transformations: Business Change That Works from the Inside Out is co-hosted by Julie Anixter and Dan Hill, PhD, entrepreneurs with deep experience as corporate change agents, devoted to helping companies make continuous change work for everyone through clarity and connection. What if the way you were taught to share your faith is actually the reason people keep pulling away? In this clip from The Daron Earlewine Podcast, Daron breaks down a model he calls "attack and extract" — find someone who doesn't know Jesus, challenge everything about them, and if they accept, pull them out of their old life into your camp. It sounds bold. It feels righteous. And it is almost never how Jesus operated. Daron walks through why this model does real damage, what nearly happened to U2 early in their career because of it, and what the actual alternative looks like — building a bridge of trust that can handle the weight of truth. This one hits different if you've ever felt like sharing your faith had to be uncomfortable or confrontational to count. KEY TAKAWAYS ⚡️ The "attack and extract" model prioritizes winning an argument over building a relationship — and Jesus consistently chose the opposite approach. ⚡️ U2 nearly quit the band because religious leaders convinced them they had to be extracted out of rock and roll to follow Jesus. What that almost cost the kingdom is worth sitting with. ⚡️ A bridge of trust that can handle the weight of truth is not a soft strategy. It is the strategy — and it requires both courage and genuine relationship. Overview Rob and Greg recap their time at Inman San Diego — the first Inman keynote without Brad Inman on stage, new CEO Tom Bohn's mixed reception, and Greg's fan encounter with his own book. From there they dig into a bigger debate: what's the actual purpose of real estate conferences, whether panels count as "education," and how MLS Reset and other events are trying to carve out a clearer mission. Key Takeaways Greg's second edition of "The Art of the CMA" is out; he's doing speaking engagements and bulk book buys tied to gigs This was the first Inman keynote Brad Inman didn't give himself, following the company sale New CEO Tom Bond's keynote got mixed reviews from attendees Inman has shifted toward more agent/broker-centric content and away from organized real estate coverage Complaint of the episode: Inman San Diego had no real central lobby bar Rob argues most real estate conferences (outside NAR events) lack a clear purpose or mission NAR Midyear and Annual are "working conferences" with real votes and lobbying, unlike most others Brand conferences (like Keller Williams' family reunion) succeed because their purpose is obvious T3 Summit, Gathering of Eagles, and RISMedia events each target a specific tier of attendee for marketing/networking purposes MLS Reset traces its roots back to the Clarity Conference and the MLS executive workshop model Rob and Greg disagree on whether panel discussions are ever educational Greg pushes back, arguing conferences can also be valuable as a source of inspiration and storytelling Rob's pitch for an ideal conference: two content sessions total, everything else built around networking and an open bar   Connect with Rob and Greg Rob's Website  Greg's Website    Watch us on YouTube   Our Sponsors: Cotality  Notorious VIP The Giant Steps Job Board    Production and Editing Services by Sunbound Studios

To watch a video version of this podcast, click here: https://youtu.be/vwDEHoyPgG4 In this episode, Reuben Saltzman, Tessa Murry, and Eric Houseman share some of the most memorable and unusual service inquiries they've encountered in the home inspection industry. From clients complaining about issues already documented in the inspection report to hidden defects concealed behind artwork and inaccessible attics, the conversation explores the challenges inspectors face when managing expectations after a home purchase.TakeawaysManaging client expectations before, during, and after an inspection is critical to customer satisfaction. Many service inquiries originate from misunderstandings about what a home inspection can and cannot uncover. Home inspectors are not required to move personal property, remove artwork, or access concealed areas that are not readily accessible.Hidden defects behind furnishings, artwork, insulation, or inaccessible spaces often become points of contention after a sale. Contractor opinions provided after an inspection do not automatically mean the inspector made a mistake. Home inspectors are not code inspectors, and older homes often contain conditions that would not meet current codes but are still functioning. Strong documentation, photographs, videos, and clear report writing help protect inspectors when questions arise later. AI can be a valuable quality-control tool by reviewing inspection reports for inconsistencies, missing comments, and reporting standards.Structure Tech has begun implementing an AI-powered report review process using uploaded procedures, style guides, and inspection requirements. Even experienced inspectors occasionally miss obvious issues, which can impact client confidence in the report. Showing up, listening, and communicating directly with clients often resolves concerns better than lengthy back-and-forth correspondenceMost home inspection complaints are relatively rare, especially when a company has strong training, processes, and quality control systems in place. A dedicated service manager can help objectively handle complaints without the emotional attachment inspectors may have to their own reports. Building trust through transparency and responsiveness is often more important than determining who is right or wrong.Continuous improvement through technology, training, and customer feedback strengthens both inspection quality and customer experience.
