Only 39% of employees strongly agree that someone at work cares about them as a person, and that number has fallen faster than any other engagement measure since 2020.Zach Mercurio, organizational psychologist and author of The Power of Mattering, joins Ashish Kothari to explain why billions spent on recognition platforms and perks can't fix what only an interaction can, and shares the three research-backed practices leaders use to show people they're noticed, affirmed, and needed. You'll discover why people need to feel valued before they can add value, the "noticing notebook" that transformed a factory team, and the five words that instantly show someone they're relied on. If you lead people and want performance without burning them out, this conversation is for you. What You Will Learn:Value people before they perform, not after. Zach's research shows feeling seen and valued is what fuels performance, not a reward for it. Start with who someone is, not what they produce.Mattering is built through interactions, not programs. Belonging and inclusion respond to initiatives. Mattering, the sense that the group wouldn't be complete without you, is built one conversation at a time. Spend less on programs and more on your managers' daily interactions.Upgrade your thank-you with four parts. Name when and where it happened, the specific behavior, the person's unique gift, and the impact it made. "Good job" is appreciation. This is affirmation: it shows people exactly how they made a difference.Say the five words: "if it wasn't for you." Needing is the practice leaders score lowest on. Tell someone what wouldn't have happened without them. Tell people what you missed when they were gone. Being relied on, and knowing it, is one of our deepest needs at work.Episode Chapters: – 4-5 key stamps (Key moments YouTube)(00:29) Janitor study: a moment of mattering, a 30-year career(08:04) What mattering is(10:40) Why feeling valued comes before adding value(15:38) The three practices: noticing, affirming, and needing(17:47) The biggest gap: showing people they're relied on(36:45) Affirming: proof of impact and the four-part thank you(44:56) $50b in recognition can't replace one caring interaction(51:23) Three anti-mattering forces: distraction, busyness, and AIResources:Connect with the GuestLinkedIn: Zach MercurioRecommended Reading: The Power of Mattering How Leaders Can Create a Culture of SignificanceConnect with the HostLinkedIn: Ashish KothariWebsite: Happiness SquadBook: Hardwired For HappinessYouTube: Happiness Squad ChannelTEDx: How to make flourishing your competitive edgeIf this conversation sparked something for you, please subscribe and leave a review, it takes 30 seconds and helps more people discover the show.

Father Tom Wilson joins Patrick to discuss Human Dignity (10:45) Identity of human Dignity Why does the Church even care about AI? (18:31) Nick - In a couple months, it would be nice to go back to this to see how the public has digested it. Militia of the Immaculate...look at encyclicals. We have a duty to uphold and live a life worthy and protect the venerable. We're called to be missionary disciples. Hold the identity of all. Tom -Remember back in 3rd grade...had to use the bathroom. Janitor was in there and asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Said I didn't want to be a janitor and he told me there's dignity in every job you do. (25:23) Break 1 Is AI all bad? (32:12) Erica - Separate time talent and treasure from the idea that we're not needing to do anything to be valuable to God. Trying to be fruitful with the gifts he's given us. How does human interaction get lost in technology? (38:21) Break 2 Margo - For the people who are not intellectually able. I work with some of them. They get caught up with a lot of scams...tend to be gullible. As things advance with AI, grows worse. Their level of comprehension is more challenging. (42:33) Mary Alice - There's an epidemic of loneliness. I've asked them to stop texting me. I understand there's so many who are craving to get together, but guys play with hand held devices and have little social skills. (47:52) How does upholding human dignity help society to flourish? Well, the Film School Janitors did it. They accomplished something they normally don't - they finished covering an entire collected work spanning decades! (Insert joke about them not finishing the NCU run yet! - not to be confused with the "MCU"...) With THE TOXIC AVENGER UNRATED (filmed in 2023 and released in 2025), they have consumed all things "Toxie", and does that make them experts? If they remembered everything, it would! So sit back, relax, grab a Tide Pod to chew on, and listen to what the Janitors think about this (final?) (latest?) entry to THE TOXIC AVENGER-VERSE! (Not to be confused with anything Marvel.)

Hey Streetwalkers. This is a throwback episode with actor John Kapelos, the janitor from The Breakfast Club! John first appeared on the show on 6.24.24It was such a compelling & fun episode, l decided it needed to be re-visited!Enjoy this throwback episode, tell a friend, and thanks for listening!John KapelosTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know John Kapelos. You may know John as 'Carl, The Janitor' from the 1984 cult classic film: The Breakfast Club; but he is so much more than that! In this episode, we chat about him spending nearly a decade with Second City, his experiences on some of the greatest John Hughes films, and even his time as 'The Sniffing Accountant' on Seinfeld. We discuss how the show must go on, even after his father unexpectedly passed. John reveals the moment he found out that Emelio Estevez was the son of Martin Sheen, stories from the set of The Breakfast Club, and his scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off that got cut. As if all of this improv comedy and hall of fame acting isn't enough, John Kapelos also put out an album! It is called "John Kapelos: Too Hip For the Room"; and he lets me play a track from it. I think you're gonna dig it!John is a consummate professional, and he gets honest and vulnerable with me in this interview. I appreciate him for letting go, and not holding back. If you have a chance to see John in a play, or singing, or in television and film; I highly suggest you check him out. In everything he does, he BRINGS IT!
