Running With The Kenyans is the story of how Adharanand moved his family to Kenya for 6 months so that he could explore why Kenyan runners are so dominant. Adharanand discovered a talent for running at a young age, but like many kids in sport, ended up getting distracted along the way and not realizing his potential. He continued to run in adulthood, but never really pushed his limits due to family obligations with 3 young kids. As the world was watching Kenyan athletes rise to the top and sweep the podiums of many major races, Adharanand was wondering what their secret is. With the approval of his wife (who was up for the adventure), they moved their 3 young kids to Kenya for 6 months so that Adharanand could train with the best runners in the world. The book is divided into 25 numbered chapters. Each chapter included a piece of Adharanand's journey to improve his own running, find the Kenyan running secret and some side stories about people that Adharanand met along the way.Adharanand Finn is an Assistant production editor for the Guardian newspaper in the UK, freelance writer and author of 3 award winning running books:Running with Kenyans - the topic of this episodeThe Way of the Runner - Which talks about Japanese obsessive running cultureRise of the Ultra Runners – Which talks about ultra-endurance runners and what makes them want to complete gruelling endurance events like the Marathon des Sables. Today We Die A Little is the story of Czech runner Emil Zatopek's life and his athletic success, but also a history lesson of the communist era in former Czechoslovakia. Emil was born in 1922 and was the seventh of his parents eight children. Although not particularly athletic, or someone who you would mark as talented, his work ethic was exemplary, and he became the world's most dominant runner by sheer hard work. Emil was known for experimenting with training methods and was known for his ability to accept being uncomfortable. This book tells an incredible story about a legend in the sport of running, while at the same time acknowledging the difficulty in making sense of the rumours, and the lack of, or inaccuracy of, the information documented during the communist era. He also explains the fear and difficulty people had to trust others, and how difficult it is to get people to talk about that time.Richard Askwith is a UK Northamptonshire-based journalist and author whose passions include running, outdoor adventure and the traditions and ordinary people of the English countryside. He has written six books including Running Free, and Feet in the Clouds, an award winning book about fell running in the UK. Today's guest is an ultra runner, a podcaster, and the author of The Way of the Runner, Running with the Kenyans, and my favorite running book of all, The Rise of the Ultra Runners. Adharanand Finn joins us to talk about his journey from middle school athletics to a sub-three hour New York City marathon and then a fateful assignment that placed him in the Oman Desert Marathon - a grueling 6 stage race that nearly defeated him, but ultimately lit his fire for ultra-distance running. Adharanand Finn is a passionate runner, and an established and renowned author. Perhaps every runner must have noticed some of his work, including the well known titles Running With The Kenyans, The Way Of The Runner and The Rise Of The Ultra Runners. We had the pleasure and honor to welcome him on our podcast. The very specific aspect of his work includes the "hands on" experience while writing a book. This means, when writing a book on Kenyan runners, he moved to Kenya. When uncovering the secrets of running culture in Japan, again, he moved to Japan and stayed close to the scene. And, when he decided to write a book about the fascinating ultra running scene, he did his best to collect points for UTMB on multiple races and locations, and ran this epic adventure on his own. We had a very nice discussion with Adharanand, chatting about some topics from his books, potential influences those might have caused, impact of the corona virus pandemic. We also got to his personal way of the runner, which somehow wires throughout his runner career, documenting his adventures around the planet. Should it be reading any of the books mentioned, or catching up with some ideas from the episode, we hope this discussion will bring you motivation and inspiration for the 2021 running season. Be it events reopened or you personal projects, follow your Way Of The Runner! To follow Adharanand Finn, check out his Instagram or the The Way Of The Runner web, where you can find his books, blog posts and podcast episodes.
James S.A. Adharanand Finn: The Way of the Runner* (deutsch: Ekiden – Der Weg der Läufer* – ab 1. Mai 2021 erhältlich) Adharanand Finn packt seine Siebensachen (und seine Familie) und begibt sich auf eine spannende Entdeckungsreise nach Japan, der „laufverrücktesten“ Nation der Welt. Episode 83 is an interview with the author Adharanand Finn. Adharanand Finn is the author of Running with the Kenyans (2012) and The Way of the Runner (2015). The first of these was the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year, won Best New Writer at the British Sports Book Awards and was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book Award. He is a journalist at the Guardian and also writes regularly for the Financial Times, the Independent, Runner's World, Men's Health and many others. A description of the book says; Marathons are no longer enough. Pain is to be relished, not avoided. Hallucinations are normal. Ultra running defies conventional logic. Yet this most brutal and challenging sport is now one of the fastest-growing in the world. Why is this? Is it an antidote to modern life, or a symptom of a modern illness? Adharanand Finn travelled to the heart of the sport to find out - and to see if he could become an ultra runner himself. His journey took him from the deserts of Oman to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, and on to his ultimate goal, the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. The Rise of the Ultra Runners is the electrifying, inspirational account of what he learned along the way. Through encounters with the sport's many colourful characters and his experiences of its soaring highs and crushing lows, Finn offers an unforgettable insight into what can be found at the boundaries of human endeavour. Are injuries or ongoing niggles causing running to be painful ruining your enjoyment of your sport and hobby? Get on top of these now so that you can enjoy running again and get back to preparing for the upcoming race season!! Ever wonder why someone would want to run distances longer than the marathon? Isn't the marathon hard enough? What about hundreds of miles through the woods, across the desert, or up a mountain? If you ever wondered how any runner becomes an ultra runner, and why, these are the questions explored in Adharanand Finn's latest book The Rise of the Ultra Runners. Adharanand Finn is a journalist and a runner living and working in the UK. This book reads like a story but provides lots of information about ultra-running, well known (and some not so well known) ultra-runners, and Adharanand's own journey into becoming an ultra-runner. In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing the author and he tells us about his journey to become an ultra-runner and how the experience changed him. Adharanand completed a series of ultra-races including the Oman Desert Marathon, the Miwok 100, the Comrades Marathon (this name is misleading as it is actually a 90 km race), the Dorset Coast 45 mile race, a 24-hour track race, and the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). He tells us about the experience of running these races, and about some of the people he met along the way.Thank you to Pegasus Books for providing us a review copy, and also putting us in contact with the author for the interview. In this episode of Amanda’s Wellbeing Podcast I chat with Advanced Accredited Sport Dietician Stephanie Gaskell who is currently working on her PhD about exercised-induced gastrointestinal syndrome at Monash University.Sports nutrition is a vast area and one where our knowledge is expanding all the time. Today, Steph and I focus on how to fuel for endurance events or long training sets. Steph explains the physiological reasons why it is beneficial to take carbohydrate on board when we are exercising for prolonged periods of time e.g. over two hours and what form that carbohydrate should take for the best results. Of course, eating during an event is not always easy and, as you can tell from the topic of Steph’s PhD, can cause gastrointestinal issues for some athletes which can at best be uncomfortable and, at worst, derail an entire race. That obviously comes into our discussion as does what to eat immediately before and after an event.Steph is an accomplished endurance runner herself with some impressive race results to her name. We talk about some of her racing experiences plus time she spent at Iten in Kenya at Lornah Kiplagat’s Hight Altitude Training Centre. Here is a link my review of "The Rise of the Ultra Runners" by Adharanand Finn that I mention in the podcast: https://amandaswellbeingpodcast.com/the-rise-of-the-ultra-runners/Links to Steph’s practice:http://www.nutritionstrategies.com.au/stephanie-gaskell/HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.If you could rate and review the podcast on iTunes, that would be super helpful.Purchasing a book from my website is an easy way to support the podcast too.Thank you.
Can the skills we learn through running – endurance, resourcefulness, patience – help us during the current crisis? Author Adharanand Finn believes so. Also discussed is the current tension between runners and dog walkers, and the small positives that have come out of the pandemic. Thanks for joining us for another week of endurance. What do these numbers mean? 08:22:21 (47:42, 04:23:51, 03:06:53) How about the number 23? This athlete's age. Or the number 7? 7th pro to qualify for Kona 2020 https://www.trirating.com/kona-2020/ We are talking about the 2019 Chatty Champ, Sam Long! This dude we predicted was just going to mature into an incredible talent at the Iron distance. This kid has been doing a huge volume of training from an early age. He did Ironman Boulder at 18 and did it coming off an injury. He won IM Chattanooga this past weekend by nearly 9 minutes! The real story if Iron War 1989thestory.com TGINR Hourly updates Midday podcast 303 Kona Athlete Profiles Aaron Acuna - What are you most excited about in competing in Kona Soaking up the whole race(week) experience. The IRONMAN World Championship is really the cherry on top for me this year and I am considering it more of a "victory lap". I qualified for Kona at IM Boulder this year and then the following week proceeded to start the Leadman race series (5 trail events over 3 months ending with the 100 mile run in Leadville, Colorado back in August). Been a long and busy year so I am excited to just be there in Kona with family and friends supporting. What is your favorite career IRONMAN memory so far Drinking beers on State Street with family/friends the night before qualifying at Wisconsin back in 2013. That and running down Ali'I Drive. So much emotion and feelings in those last couple hundred yards. Is this your first time competing in Kona and if no how many other times have you done so? No. This will be my 2nd time back in Kona, hoping for some redemption this time around. If someone were watching that is new to the sport, what would you tell them is the coolest thing about being a triathlete and competing in this venue. I think there is something to be said about sharing this course (and the day) with the world's best athletes. Coolest thing about this venue...everything you see on TV, the magic and mystique of the island is so true. What do you think is the hardest thing about doing an IRONMAN? Like training for any endurance sport/event, knowing when to hold back to stave off injury and/or burnout. The hardest thing about actually executing the IRONMAN race is pulling everything together (pacing, nutrition, race strategy, etc.). For me, It's HOW you manage those variables and unknowns that are thrown at you on race day that separate you from having a great race to an okay race. Niki Leo What are you most excited about in competing in Kona? I am most excited to experience the legend course, to personally feel the heat, humidity, and winds that are so infamous. I am also excited to see in person, at one time, many of my heroes in the sport. Triathlon is genuinely one of the only sports in the world where you get to compete on the same field of play as the professionals...and do that with all of them is going to be amazing. I am truly excited about just being able to have this opportunity. What is your favorite career Ironman so far? That is a hard one...Louisville 2018 where I qualified will probably always be special because I realized a dream come true. However, my first Ironman--Arizona in 2011--will probably always be my favorite because my love for the sport was all so pure then-- a lesson in ignorance is bliss. The celebratory feeling that I could actually do something like a full Ironman...there is always that doubt...and then you cross that finish line and you cannot believe it...the feeling is so indescribable unless you've done it. It is also the only time I ever felt that way...after finishing the first, knowing you could do it, the others after that were amazing but I knew I could finish because I had before. Is this your first time competing in Kona? Yes. I have always wanted to qualify and came close a couple of times however, in 2018 after my first DNF (ever) in Ironman Boulder--which was supposed to be my 11th IM--I did IM Canada (which turned out to be #11). Destroyed about the DNF at Boulder, I registered for Louisville (12) to get onto the Legacy list. Well...I finished second (missing first by 6 seconds) and qualified! If someone were new to the sport, what would I tell them is the best thing about being a triathlete and competing at this venue? For sure, triathlon has saved me in so many ways...it has given me something to live for and something to always work towards. It has given me the feeling few will ever experience in their lifetime--that feeling of wanting so badly to stop and yet, feeling the most alive I ever feel. It has given me direction when I have been lost--depression, eating disorders, cancer. It has given me determination and grit to endure--pain, injuries (which all have come as result of getting hit by cars...multiple times). It has given me a family and friends that I would not otherwise have in CO since I moved here not knowing anyone. It has given me perspective that I'm human--changing and adapting everyday is required to lead a balanced life. The venue itself will cause you to doubt yourself, to face failure, to determine what your priorities in life are, and it will make you feel more alive than anything else in this world if you dare take yourself there. What do I think is the hardest part of Ironman? The time it takes. The energy it takes at times. The fear you have to overcome to test yourself. And to do it for YOU. That first one is always about YOU...then you "drink the kool aid" and for some reason, it changes. I have a love/hate relationship with Ironman because of this. I think the family and culture it creates can be amazing but I have also seen it destroy people. It can be so intimidating so I think the hardest thing is not to lose yourself and don't lose sight of what Ironman is in your life...that is, it is a hobby/sport you enjoy and unless you are a pro, it does not define you. The glacier sits astride the Grandes Jorasses mountain of the Mont Blanc massif, or complex of summits. Glaciers provide fresh water, and their rapid retreat is regarded as a symptom of climate change. "These phenomena once again show how the mountain is going through a period of major change due to climate factors and, therefore, it is particularly vulnerable," said Stefano Miserocchi, mayor of the nearby town of Courmayeur. Miserocchi closed local roads after warnings that the glacier's movement had accelerated by two feet per day. Scientists have been monitoring the glacier since 2013. WHY!!?? That's the question that comes to my mind when I hear about 100 mile runs. Any running race longer than a marathon (26.2 miles) is considered an ultra run or an ultra race. While it sounds downright insane to a lot of people, it's a genuine phenomenon with races through deserts, over mountains or just around and around the same track or city block. And if you're like me, maybe there's a corner of your mind where you're intrigued with the idea of learning how far you can really go. Adharanand Finn tried, and found out, and he shares his story.
In Episode 46 Kyle speaks with author and runner Arharanand Finn about his running experiences and training. We chat about the Scots in action at the The Vitality Big Half in London for the British Half Marathon Champs and the Inverness Half Marathon, and we've got a bunch of Scots in action at the British Athletics Inter Counties XC with Mhairi Maclennan finishing in an outstanding 3rd place to make the GB cross team.
Adharanand Finn is the British author of Running with the Kenyans, Way of the Runner, and his new book Rise of the Ultra Runners: A Journey to the Edge of Human Endurance. Running with the Kenyans was the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year, won Best New Writer at the British Sports Book Awards, and was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book Award. Adharanand is also an editor at the Guardian and a freelance journalist. He is also a former junior cross-country runner and now competes for Torbay AC in Devon, where he and his family usually live. For the first two of his books, Adharanand transported himself to Kenya and Japan to immerse himself and his family within the wider culture that he was documenting. For Rise of the Ultra Runner, Adharanand transformed himself from a traditional marathon runner into an ultra distance athlete, ultimately competing in the UTMB in France. We speak to Adharanand from his home in Totnes, Devon about his journey towards UTMB, the many things that he learnt along the way and just what makes elite athletes like Zach Miller tick. Adharanand has a wealth of knowledge about Kenyan athletes and his discussion on just why top flite Kenyan athletes have been reluctant to compete at ultra distance trail events is fascinating. Enjoy!
Adharanand Finn has lived with the elite Kenyan runners in Iten, he’s trained in Japan while learning about the famously cut-throat Ekiden races, and he’s now turning his attention to the burgeoning ultramarathon scene. In this interview, we talk about: The cultural and social influences on the Japanese distance running … The post Adharanand Finn | Japanese Ekiden, Kenyan Marathoners, and the Rise of Ultrarunners appeared first on Ultrarunnerpodcast.com.

In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore some curiosities and unanswered questions from Greg's research, including the love affair that inspired the Rolls Royce hood ornament, a long-distance dancer, Otto von Bismarck's dogs, and a craftily plotted Spanish prison break. We'll also run after James Earl Ray and puzzle over an unsociable jockey. Intro: Workers constructing Washington's Grand Coulee Dam in 1942 fed a cable through a 500-foot drain by tying a string to an alley cat's tail. A 2001 earthquake in Olympia, Wash., drew a graceful rose with a sand-tracing pendulum. Sources for this week's feature: The best source I can find regarding the origins of the Rolls Royce hood ornament is this Telegraph article from 2008, in which Montagu's son says, "My father and Eleanor shared a great passion. It was a grand love affair - perhaps even the love of his life. All this happened before my father met my mother. But I understand my father's first wife knew about the mistress. She was very tolerant of her and they got on very well." But this quote is given in the service of promoting a film about the affair, which makes it less objective than I'd like. (Paul Tritton of the Rolls-Royce Owners' Club of Australia disputes the story here.) Alexandre Dumas' habit of eating an apple every morning beneath the Arc de Triomphe is described in this New York Times article, among many other modern sources. The earliest mention I can find is a 1911 article in the Dietetic and Hygienic Gazette, attributing the intervention to Hungarian physician David Gruby. I've confirmed that Gruby served as a physician to Dumas (père et fils), but I can't find anything about an apple. The incidents of the Savoy Hotel cloakroom and the Travellers Club suicide are both described in N.T.P. Murphy's A Wodehouse Handbook (2013). The suicide rule is mentioned at the end of this Telegraph article, which gives me hope that it's true, but I can't find anything more comprehensive. The story of the Providence United Methodist Church is told in both Randy Cerveny's Freaks of the Storm (2005) and Rick Schwartz's Hurricanes and the Middle Atlantic States (2007). Snopes says it's "mostly true." In Constable's Clouds, published by the National Galleries of Scotland 2000, Edward Morris writes, "It is this moment of early morning light -- and what has been described as 'the atmosphere of stillness tinged with expectancy' -- that Constable translates into the finished canvas." Judith Collins mentions Joseph Beuys' responsibility for snow in her introduction to Andy Goldsworthy's Midsummer Snowballs (2001). Reader Olga Izakson found the description of Tiras, Otto von Bismarck's “dog of the empire,” in Robert K. Massie's Dreadnought (1991). A few further links. The role of Esperanto in the planning of the 1938 San Cristobál prison break is described (I think) here. In 1600 William Kemp published a pamphlet chronicling his 1599 morris dance to Norwich, Kemps Nine Daies Wonder, to quiet doubters. The allegation that Margaret Thatcher ordered the identities of British government employees to be encoded in the word spacing of their documents appears in Gregory Kipper's Investigator's Guide to Steganography (2003). I've found it in other technical documents, but these tend to cite one another rather than an authoritative source. How important is diet to running performance? It's a question Food Programme listener and runner Nicole Marais wanted answers too and so she emailed the programme's production team. This programme explains what happened next.... When Dan Saladino went to meet (and run with) Nicole she explained she had tried lots of different diets, from one based on meat, to a vegetarian diet and onto veganism. She was keen to hear the experience of other runners and athletes and how they eat to run. Dan hears from Kevin Currell, Head of Performance Nutrition at the English Institute of Sport, to find out about the dietary advice given to Britain's elite athletes. Adharanand Finn, author of 'Running with the Kenyans', shares his insights into running, racing and eating in Iten, the town where many of the world's most successful distance runners live and train. Kenyan runners eat a lot of ugali, a carbohydrate rich porridge made of maize flour and water. Elsewhere however, others are arguing that a low-carb, high-fat diet will help runners reach peak performance. Author of Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes, Christopher McDougall, profiles diets based on this principle, that fuelled long runs by resistance fighters during the Second World War and early Iron Man events in the 1980's. It's a controversial approach and many believe it's just the latest food fad to be picked up by people in the running world. The programme also features Scott Jurek who eats a carbohydrate rich, vegan diet. It's enabled him to dominate runs like Badwater, a 135 mile race through America's Death Valley. Will these athletes and running writers give listener Nicole Marais the information she needs to break her own record in this year's London Marathon? Listen, find out and perhaps go on a run afterwards. Produced and presented by Dan Saladino. Researcher: Camellia Sinclair.

In this thoughtful essay Adharanand Finn provides a subtle answer to a simple question: why do we run? After all, he says, "running is hard. It requires effort. And after all the pain you usually end up right back where you started, having run in a big, pointless circle". With reference to childhood, hunter-gatherers and even the monks of mount Hiei, who run the equivalent of 1,000 marathons in 1,000 days, Adharanand arrives at an answer: running brings us joy. Recorded at the End of the Road music festival. Producer: Richard Knight.
