Alex Potter is a photojournalist, trauma nurse, former wildland firefighter, and co-founder of Global Response Medicine, a humanitarian non-profit bringing emergency medicine to low-resource and high-risk areas. Alex spent her early career photographing conflict in the Middle East, before spending two seasons as a wildland firefighter in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. She then moved to Alaska to pursue a career as an Air Force Combat Rescue Officer and was selected in Phase 2 of the CRO pipeline in 2022. While a twist of fate (and knee) changed that path, she remains passionate about mountain pursuits, far-forward medicine, and the ability to help others achieve their goals. She is a current board member of the Special Operations Climbers Coalition, and recently moved to Bozeman, Montana.More about Alex: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexkpotter/Global Response Medicine: https://global-response.org/Photography: https://www.alexkaypotter.com/Support GRM: https://givebutter.com/AcuteCareTimestamps:00:00:22 Introduction to Alex Potter00:01:14 Piecing Together Alex Potter's Career00:04:48 Combat Rescue Officers VS. After building a successful hospitality empire in London, including venues like Rum Kitchen and Island Poké, Alex Potter found himself feeling empty—despite external success. A profound spiritual awakening led him to leave his business empire and divorce, embarking on a path of self-discovery through breathwork, plant medicine, and coaching. Now, through his company Kaizen, he helps leaders reconnect with their authentic selves through innovative retreats and coaching programmes that blend ancient wisdom with modern practices. Photographer, journalist, trauma nurse, wildland firefighter, and all around badass Alex Pottter joins the podcast to talk about her journey from growing up in a small town in the midwest to living and working in Yemen and throughout the middle east as a photojournalist, to working as a trauma nurse on the front lines of the war in Mosul, to her years as a wildland firefighter and all the adventures in between. During our conversation Alex tells me what it was like traveling through the middle east as a young woman and the purpose she found in the region, the tragic loss of her husband Pete Reed who she met and worked alongside in Mosul, the importance of being present with the ones you love, and the advice she gives to others looking to find their own purpose and adventure. This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Alex Potter. One of the first things Alex told me when we spoke was that she always knew hers would be a travel centered life. Travel along with living and working abroad changes and enlightens, anyone who chooses to do so. You can't help, but change a little, at least a little once you're exposed and immersed in a culture other than yours. Anthony Bourdain once said: "Travel changes you as you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly. You leave marks behind however small. And in return life and travel leaves marks on you." Alex went to school to become a nurse. During that time she chose to study abroad. She spent time in India, Uganda, and Jordan, while working on her degree. All the while she knew she had a passion for journalism and photography. Once she graduated, nursing jobs were tough to find and she returned to Jordan. That was the start of a career that would find her in Jordan, Yemen and Iraq. Just to name a few of the countries. Her story takes twists and turns involving revolutions invasions, wild land, firefighting, trauma nursing, and in the middle of all of it, finding love. Alex has experienced her share of trauma, death, loss, and grief.Never one to back down from a challenge, Alex has met it all head on and with her head up. Perseverance and a life fulfilled are the themes running through every aspect of her human experience.

The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Welcome to a fresh week in Retail Auto as we talk about the automotive show that made news over the weekend…OURS! We also talk about dissension in the Toyota Annual Meeting, as well as a calculation on Tesla's charging win. From reporting the news to making the news. We want to thank Dan Shine, Editor of Automotives News Fixed Ops Journal, and writer Abigail Ham for publishing this piece on our More Than Cars Series"More Than Cars" hosts Paul Daly and Kyle Mountsier grew to love the auto industry while working in it. Now, they want to teach others to love it, too."More Than Cars" aims to highlight what Daly and Mountsier feel is an overlooked side of car sales and service: the humans behind it.The duo, who run the auto retail content creation company Automotive State of the Union, hope to make seven more episodes. They will film the second episode in Atlanta this month.Amongst a rare show of dissension, Toyota's annual meeting has sparked a debate over Chairman Akio Toyoda's cautious approach to electric vehicles, with shareholders including the New York City comptroller's office and the California Public Employees' Retirement System considering voting against his board reappointment due to his resistance to an all-electric lineup.“Even in this difficult business environment, Chairman of the Board Akio Toyoda has been strengthening our competitiveness from a long-term perspective,” a spokesman for the company said.Although the probability of Toyoda's removal from the board is low, even a slight reduction in support could be seen as an embarrassment in Japan's consensus-driven corporate culture. It is not uncommon for shareholders to tearfully thank Toyoda, the grandson of the company's founderHe received a 96% approval for renomination to the board a year agoUnder new CEO Koji Sato, Toyota is accelerating its push into EVs without setting a definitive date for an all-EV lineup, contrasting with automakers like GMand Honda. The company plans to be carbon neutral by 2050 and aims to halve new-vehicle carbon emissions by 2035, compared with 2019 levels.Tesla could be adding $3B to its revenue by 2030 and up to 5.4B by 2032 from GM and Ford partnerships alone according to Piper Sandler analyst Alex Potter who released a research note late last weekWhile these revenue figures may not be significant compared to Tesla's existing annual revenue exceeding $80 billion, the agreements could impact the margins of Tesla's competitors, GM and Ford, who have stated their EV programs are currently unprofitable.According to Potter, “Other brands will be forced to join this consortium, effectively establishing Tesla's ‘North American Charging Standard' as the preferred approach for EV charging — at least in the United States.” Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Non-Governmental Organizations, Non-Profits and Volunteers have been providing critical services on the battlefield for millennia. Historically the traditional view of medical care in conflict zones was that the military focused on victory and everything else was ancillary, even care of their own wounded. Only in the last few centuries has there been an evolution of care as another focus after completing the mission. Through all of this it was often family members, clergy and Volunteers providing aid to those left to rot on historic battlefields. These NGOs and Volunteers have recognized this gap and organized themselves into powerful coalitions that are able to go where traditional militaries cannot or will not due to political pressures. Sometimes however, there exists an overlap of traditional military presence and NGO response as the situation matures or devolves. Alex Potter and Global Response Management positioned themselves far forward on the front lines of the battles for Mosul when times were tough and the International military and humanitarian response to ISIS was in its infancy. Thank you GRM for your hard work and dedication. We are extremely proud of what your team accomplished and maybe even a little jealous in the bittersweet way that only those who have experienced the horrors of armed conflict can comprehend. www.prolongedfieldcare.org

Her work explores conflict and trust, loss and isolation within communities and relationships and her goal to bridge the gap between the foreign and familiar by creating thought-provoking and emotional images. I had the chance to sit down with Alex over coffee during one of her few days back home in the US this year to hear her story of how her passion has taken her all over the world and hear her advice on finding your calling.
