China does not acknowledge or accept the European Union's final ruling to impose additional tariffs on electric vehicles manufactured in the Chinese market, the Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday, vowing to take all necessary measures to protect the interests of companies.10月30日,中国商务部表示,中方对欧盟对华电动汽车加征关税的终裁结果不认同、不接受,将继续采取一切必要措施坚决维护中国企业的合法权益。The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, announced on Tuesday the conclusion of its anti-subsidy investigation, resulting in the imposition of definitive countervailing duties on EVs produced in China. Electric vehicles are becoming more popular and if you can't afford a Tesla, a cheaper Chinese made car could be the answer. But in the United States, the Biden administration wants to ban all Chinese developed software from cars on American roads because of security concerns. The US government already charges a big tariff on imports of Chinese EVs. Today, Adam Tong from the Center for a New American Security on whether the cyber security risk cited by US officials is really something to be concerned about. Mr. Tong explains that the interconnected nature of modern EVs increases their vulnerability to cyber attacks. He highlights that malware could potentially be embedded in the software deeply embedded in the vehicles, posing risks to both personal data and physical safety. Mr. Tong notes that while no major attacks have occurred yet, the proactive measures by the US aim to prevent future threats. He also discusses the economic implications of the ban, suggesting it also serves to protect the US EV industry from Chinese competition.Featured: Adam Tong, associate fellow at the Center for a New American Security Key Topics:Electric vehiclesChinese EVsCybersecurity risksBiden administration US-China trade relationsEV industry Tariffs on Chinese importsNational security concerns

Shoot us a Text. It's the last Friday of the month, and today we're covering new US tariffs on all sorts of Chinese goods, how OEMs are flocking back to television ads on NFL games, and Mr. Beast's manifesto on how to build a successful company. Show Notes with links:New tariffs go into effect today, as the Biden Administration targets Chinese-built EVs and other imports. The 100% tariff on Chinese EVs escalates trade tensions between the US and China and follows months of negotiation. The tariffs affect 14 categories of Chinese goods, including 50% on solar cells and 25% on key materials like steel, aluminum, and lithium-ion batteries.Tariffs on Chinese semiconductors are expected in 2025 and electronics such as laptops and cell phones are set for 2026.Chinese EVs only account for 2% of US EV imports.China has threatened retaliation, labeling the tariffs as “bullying” and escalating the global trade war.Automakers are ramping up their advertising spend during the NFL season after a few years of reduced activity. Brands like Toyota, Hyundai, and Detroit automakers are betting big on live sports, especially NFL games, to capture consumer attention.Automotive advertising increased by 17% over the last two NFL seasons and is expected to keep growing.Last NFL season, 44% of automotive ad spend on national TV was dedicated to NFL programming, compared to 31% across all sectors, according to Guideline.Toyota has become the “Official Automotive Partner of the NFL,” and GM plans to boost ad spending by $400 million in the second half of the year to promote new vehicle launches.NFL broadcasts garnered 17.9 million viewers on average last season, with the Super Bowl drawing 123.7 million.Toyota's Dedra DeLilli said, “The most appealing aspect of this partnership is we have access to 218 million highly diverse, highly engaged fans of the NFL.”MrBeast, YouTube's biggest star, is now making waves as a thought leader in the tech world. A leaked workplace guide by Jimmy Donaldson has caught the attention of Silicon Valley, sparking conversations on leadership, productivity, and intense work expectations. The 36-page guide emphasizes hiring "A-Players" who are obsessive, coachable, and the best in their field.Donaldson expects workers to be laser-focused, demanding radical accountability and a "no excuses" approach to their work. It's been compared to "founder mode," a hands-on management style popular in the tech industry. While some praise its intensity, others criticized it for promoting a grueling work culture.Investor Marc Cohen said, “It feels like it's written by a person rather than a corporation,”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Bruce Nurse, Founder and CEO of Pure Wave Hydrogen, a Colorado-based company dedicated to the discovery and development of natural hydrogen resources across North America. EV paradise or charging hell? Alarming electric car secret exposed. How will hydrogen change the EV industry? How will it affect the US reliance on China when it comes to natural resources that fuel the US EV market?
Automakers got ahead of their skis. EV sales are up globally and in the U.S., but growth has been slower than expected and uneven. After enjoying a wave of growth driven by early adopters, automakers overestimated demand of more cautious consumers and ended up producing more than buyers wanted. Now auto dealers are slashing prices to move cars off the lot. So how did the market get here? And how can EVs appeal to the next wave of consumers? In this episode, Shayle talks to Gene Berdichevsky, co-founder and CEO of anode material manufacturer Sila Nanotechnologies. Shayle and Gene cover topics like: How high-performance cells can lead to lower-cost batteries Why Gene says lithium-iron-phosphate may hit a ceiling in the market The potential of sodium-ion batteries Who can take advantage of production overcapacity The limitations of the Inflation Reduction Act in the face of weak demand How manufacturing is competing with other major loads, like data centers, for electricity Solving the challenges of vehicle-to-grid Recommended resources Bloomberg: The Slowdown in US Electric Vehicle Sales Looks More Like a Blip The Wall Street Journal: EVs Are Cheaper Than Ever. Shoot us a Text. It's Tuesday. That is all. Today, we're talking about a new report that shows the CDK hack resulted in $1B in losses, how GM is pulling back from its EV target and what other retailers are doing to take advantage of Amazon Prime DayShow Notes with linksDealerships across the nation are reeling after a devastating cyberattack on CDK Global resulted in $1.02 billion in losses, as reported by the Anderson Economic Group (AEG).Between June 19 and July 15, dealerships lost 56,200 new-vehicle sales.AEG initially projected a $944 million loss but updated it to $1.02 billion due to new sales data and the actual duration of the outage.AutoNation estimated the CDK situation had stripped $1.50 out of its second-quarter earnings per share. On June 21 more than $25 million of bitcoin was sent to an "address assessed by TRM Labs to be controlled by the ransomware group BlackSuit," according to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs.AEG CEO Patrick Anderson highlighted the need for businesses to brace for potential cyberattacks, stating, “This episode is a wake-up call for the auto industry, and a warning to all others.”General Motors CEO Mary Barra has adjusted the company's ambitious EV production target, signaling a shift in expectations amid slowing momentum for electric vehicles.GM will not reach the production capacity for one million EVs by the end of next year, as previously aimed.Barra emphasized that customer demand will dictate the pace of reaching the one million EV annual sales mark. The company faces hurdles, including recent battery production issues and delayed opening of an electric pickup truck plant near Detroit.GM is increasing production of the electric Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox models to boost sales.US EV deliveries were flat in Q2 year-over-year but increased 11% from Q1, per Cox Automotive.Despite the slowdown, Barra remains confident the market will eventually support their EV goals, stating, “We won't get to a million just because the market's not developing, but it will get there.”As Amazon gears up for its 10th Prime Day, rival retailers are not sitting idly by. Major players like Walmart, Target, Kohl's, and newcomers TikTok Shop and Temu have launched their own summer sales to attract deal-hungry shoppers.Retailers are leveraging the excitement around Prime Day to offer their own discounts and promotions, aiming to capture some of Amazon's market share.July sales events help retailers pull in back-to-school shoppers and those looking for summer items, mitigating the traditional summer lull in retail spending.Retailers closely monitor each other's pricing, with some, like Best Buy, adjusting their deals in real-time to stay competitive with Amazon.Perceived deals and the urgency created by limited-time offers can drive significant consumer interest and spending.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text. We've reached the end of another week in the automotive industry. There's a buzz around news that CDK will financially compensate dealers for their losses due to DMS outages, more interesting Q2 data involving Kia's EVs and a new battery that could help drive EV adoption. In a letter to over 15,000 dealerships, CDK Global CEO Brian MacDonald committed to compensating customers for financial losses caused by the June cyberattacks, saying "We recognize the events have been challenging, and we will provide you with some financial relief."MacDonald also assured ongoing security improvements: "We have taken steps to secure our environment and we will continue to work with top third-party security experts to constantly evolve our approach. [As] a market leader, CDK is well equipped to make the ongoing and necessary investments.""For the industry, we are offering to any dealer — regardless of whether or not they are a CDK customer — a free tool to conduct training to better prepare for potential cyber incidents and to help dealership employees avoid common pitfalls."Specifics of the compensation will be shared by CDK's Customer Engagement Team, though a spokesman stated CDK didn't have "further detail beyond what's in the letter to share at this time."Rita Case, CEO of Rick Case Automotive Group, suggested this approach: "My suggestion would be to offer the dealers, over a year, a credit equivalent to three months of their services."It was reported that CDK payed a $25M ransom to resolve the outage. Kia surged ahead in Q2 US electric vehicle sales, thanks to its new EV9 model. Kia placed third in the US EV market behind Tesla and Ford. The success of the new EV9 model and increased sales of the EV6 contributed to this growth.Kia sold over 29,000 EVs in the first half of 2024, capturing 4.6% of the US EV marketThe new EV9, a three-row electric SUV, sold 9,671 units in the first six months, and Kia's EV6 sales increased by nearly 40% in Q2.The top 10 EV manufacturers in the US right now are Tesla, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, BMW, Rivian, Chevrolet, Mercedes, Toyota, and Cadillac.Kia's Q2 market share was 5.4%, topping Hyundai's 5.1%."Kia's rapid growth in the EV sector is a testament to our innovative models and strategic market approach,” said a Kia spokesperson.Nyobolt, a startup from Cambridge, has unveiled a revolutionary battery that charges in under five minutes. The new 35kWh lithium-ion battery charges from 10% to 80% in just over four and a half minutes using a 350kW DC ultra-rapid charger, which is currently rare but expected to become more widespread by the end of the decadeCharge time is much faster than the current fast chargers, bringing EV fast charging from over 20 minutes closer to the refueling time of gasoline cars. The battery's design generates less heat, improving safety and longevity.NyoHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

An Alliance for American Manufacturing report called for tariffs to protect the U.S. electric vehicle market from an “extinction-level event” caused by Chinese competitors. The report follows Chinese EV maker BYD, the world's largest EV maker, releasing a $14,000 EV in February that could “demolish” domestic EVs, often $40,000 more expensive. The report says China uses Mexico's trade relationship with the United States to avoid high tariffs. The Institute for Energy Research says BYD will dodge a 27.5% tariff from China by building a factory in Mexico where tariffs are 2.5%. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michigan-in-focus/support

Big shifts are everywhere on this day before the leap year day as Apple cuts the bait on the AppleCar, BYD has announced they will not be pursuing the US market, and Jag-Land Rover are ditching their agency model plans. CarPlay may be the best iPhone users can hope for in their car as Apple is officially shutting down its EV program Project Titan, reallocating resources to developing its AI capabilities. Billions invested and numerous strategy shifts later, Apple acknowledges the complex challenges of the automotive sector, choosing to focus on its strengths in AI.Some developers from the car project are transitioning to AI roles, while those who work on hardware will likely be facing layoffs"Apple canceling this project is a sigh of relief for us," shares Dan Morgan from Synovus Trust, highlighting the challenging fit of automotive projects within Apple's portfolio.Jeff Schuster, global vice president of automotive research at consultant GlobalData said “They (Apple) certainly had the most downside,” he said. “Tesla benefits big time from being a status vehicle. And an Apple EV definitely would be a status vehicle.”Elon Musk on Tuesday sent a post on X with a saluting emoji and a cigarette.Chinese EV maker BYD has decided against launching its electric vehicles in the US, citing the market's complexity and political entanglements as major deterrents as the company's focus turns to strengthening its presence in Mexico with a new manufacturing facility.Stella Li, BYD Americas' CEO, highlights the US EV market's intricate landscape, discouraging the Chinese automaker's entry.Li criticizes the US's slower electrification pace and the confusing political climate, contrasting sharply with China's robust EV adoption and clear policies."If you are not investing for electric car, you are out. You will die. You have no future," Li asserts, emphasizing the stark difference in EV market dynamics between the US and China. In the first of possibly many about-faces, Jaguar Land Rover is abandoning its agency model plans in the UK as it opts to maintain its traditional franchised sales model amidst retail partner consultations.JLR is backing away from its fixed-price, no-haggle sales strategy, opting instead to stick with its current dealership model rather than moving to direct sales.Influenced by feedback from partners, JLR's decision is showcasing its commitment to a "client-centric retail experience" while maintaining the foundation of the franchise model."The franchise model is a tried and trusted model," Darren Edwards, CEO of Sytner Group, is stating, applauding JLR's flexibility and its response to the evolving market dynamics.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

The US has historically lagged behind mainland China and Europe for electric vehicle ownership, but is this about to change? If you believe GM and Ford, who cite falling demand for the delaying of their near-term EV sales targets, the logical answer would be no. But here at BloombergNEF, we've been crunching the numbers and what they show is not only are US sales of battery-electric cars rising, they are poised to cross the 1 million mark this year. On today's show, Corey Cantor from BNEF's EV team returns to talk with Dana. Together they discuss how the Inflation Reduction Act has supercharged the US market, whether red or blue states have the highest EV uptake, and whether Rivian can cross the ‘EV valley of death' to scale from a startup to mass production. Complimentary BNEF research on the trends driving the transition to a lower-carbon economy can be found at BNEF on the Bloomberg Terminal, on bnef.com or on the BNEF mobile app. Links to research notes from this episode: Rivian's Path Through ‘EV Valley of Death' Looking Clearer - https://www.bnef.com/insights/32741 US Annual EV Sales Close In on 1 Million All-Electric Cars - https://www.bnef.com/shorts/s3va1ydwx2ps01?context=eyJjb250ZW50VHlwZSI6InNob3J0IiwicmVnaW9uIjpbXSwic2VjdG9yIjpbXSwiYXV0aG9yIjpbIjQwNjI3Il19 US EVs Hit 1 Million Annual Sales - With Time to Spare - https://www.bnef.com/shorts/s20elht0g1kw01?context=eyJjb250ZW50VHlwZSI6InNob3J0IiwicmVnaW9uIjpbXSwic2VjdG9yIjpbXSwiYXV0aG9yIjpbIjQwNjI3Il19 EV Sales Speed Past the 10% Tipping Point in 10 US States - https://www.bnef.com/shorts/s1p7zydwx2ps01?context=eyJjb250ZW50VHlwZSI6InNob3J0IiwicmVnaW9uIjpbXSwic2VjdG9yIjpbXSwiYXV0aG9yIjpbIjQwNjI3Il19 Biden States Faster to Adopt EVs But It's Not All Politics - https://www.bnef.com/shorts/s1nv4tt0g1kw01?context=eyJjb250ZW50VHlwZSI6InNob3J0IiwicmVnaW9uIjpbXSwic2VjdG9yIjpbXSwiYXV0aG9yIjpbIjQwNjI3Il19See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
