Send us a Text Message.Coheed and Cambria is a progressive rock band originating from Nyack, New York, known for their unique blend of intricate instrumentation, fantastical storytelling, and dynamic vocal performances. Formed in 1995, the band consists of Claudio Sanchez (vocals, guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Josh Eppard (drums), and Zach Cooper (bass). At the core of Coheed and Cambria's discography lies "The Amory Wars," a science fiction saga created by frontman Claudio Sanchez, which serves as the conceptual basis for much of their music. The narrative follows the epic journey of characters Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon as they navigate through a universe plagued by war, betrayal, and cosmic forces. Each album released by the band corresponds to a chapter in this overarching story, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for listeners.Musically, Coheed and Cambria's sound is characterized by intricate guitar riffs, soaring vocal melodies, and complex rhythmic patterns. Drawing inspiration from progressive rock, punk, metal, and alternative rock, their music seamlessly blends together elements of various genres to create a distinctive sonic landscape. Sanchez's powerful vocals, often compared to Geddy Lee of Rush, are complemented by Stever's and Cooper's dynamic guitar work and Eppard's precise drumming, resulting in a sound that is both grandiose and emotionally resonant. The band's breakout album, "The Second Stage Turbine Blade," released in 2002, garnered widespread acclaim for its ambitious storytelling and musical craftsmanship. Subsequent albums such as "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" and "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" further solidified Coheed and Cambria's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential bands in modern rock.Overall, Coheed and Cambria's impact on the music industry extends beyond their innovative approach to rock music; they have created a rich and immersive universe that resonates deeply with fans, solidifying their place as pioneers of modern progressive rock.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------L.S. Their inaugural album, "Past Lives," dropped on November 11, 2022, introducing singles like "Permanent Rebellion," "2022," and "Bombsquad." Following their UK tour debut in January 2023, they embarked on their first US tour in July. Born during the pandemic, the group initially convened during rehearsals for Thursday's 2020 holiday livestream, initially operating under the moniker "Dad Bods." Despite their individual recordings, the ensemble's lineup remained undisclosed until Rule sent Green the instrumental tracks. The emergence of this post-hardcore/emo ensemble first surfaced with their inclusion on Riot Fest's May 2022 poster. Their Riot Fest debut showcased six tracks from "Past Lives." Join me, Jason LaChance, host of the @KnockinDoorzDown podcast, certified addiction recovery coach, and mental health advocate for my sit down with the beyond-talented Anthony Green. Anthony is the vocalist behind many bands, including Saosin, Circa Survive, The Sound of Animals Fighting, and most recently, L.S. Dunes. Anthony has been very open about his struggles with addiction and mental health struggles and his lyrics over the past few decades convey that. Anthony is now in the best space he's been in for many years. He continues to share his struggles while on tour, including his struggles and his emphasis on Narcan (opioid overdose reversal medication) awareness and how to dispense it if ever needed as he's been saved a few times from an overdose death. This week we have with us a bandmate, collaborator and brother to me by the name of Rich Balling. Many of you will know Rich as leader of The Sound Of Animals Fighting but he has also has created projects such as Pyramids and Hospital Gown. In addition to being a musician/producer Rich is also an educator by trade, devoted family man, and high level film buff specifically in the horror genre. After finishing our last TSOAF shows of the year Rich and I sat down and had an excellent chat that unfortunately requires you to listen to my stupid laugh more than I'd like anyone to endure. In this conversation we talk about Rich's breakfast game, egg cooking techniques, his band merch collection, the magic of certain lead singers, being present with our age, his daughters making fun of him for being cringe, Braid's Frame and Canvas, his love for Del Taco and lots more. Thank you esteemed members of The Guild. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today on the podcast we welcome Rich Balling from The Sound of Animals Fighting, Hospital Gown, Pyramids, and RX Bandits. Rich and I reconnected recently as we last crossed paths during my days at Equal Vision during The Sound of Animals Fighting release “Lover, the Lord Has Left Us…” back in 2006. Now The Sound of Animals Fighting has a new EP called “APESHIT” out on Born Losers Records. Rich and I discuss his career balancing music, collaboration and his day job. Old shows he saw growing up in LA, plus his amazing knack as a teacher in real life to provide some real knowledge about listening to your heart, your mind, and realities we face as creative people. And yes, we talk emo. It's a podcast about emo.
Gwendolyn Dolske and Rudy Salo welcome musician/producer/educator/education consultant, Rich Balling (RX Bandits, The Sound of Animals Fighting). What is it like to follow the two paths of music and education? How to balance creativity with profession? What is the state of education? What is the significance of reading and test scores for young students? Greetings wonderful humans. In this episode I take you through vibes and sounds of this last T.S.O.A.F. tour we just finished a couple weeks ago. You'll get a peak inside my routines, habits, and preferences on tour in a style similar to an amusement ride, meaning you just sit back and take it all in at the pace already set. You'll also get to be a fly on the wall for different conversations during the tour; you'll be listening from a hotel room, a dressing room, a hotel room, in an alley and on the street. After this episode we will continue to roll on with more Field Reports and more full length conversations with guests. Coming in hot ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend, here's a wholesome new episode of Beats, Beards & Brews for all to enjoy! It's December, which means the music release calendar has slowed way down, but that doesn't stop the boys from diving into the latest EP from The Sound of Animals Fighting titled APESHIT. Listen with glee as the gang debates whether they like this experimental indie/post-hardcore rock band's new tracks or not. It's a lot to digest, that's for sure! The Sound of Animals Fighting songs previewed during this episode include: Apeshit Wolf Sharon Tate, Despite Everything In a new segment titled "Eric's New Cool Winter Beard Oil Scents," the man himself (Eric) drops three cold weather beard oil recommendations. These are beard oils that Eric recommends for any bearded man when the temps get cold. Eric's top beard oil picks for the 2022 winter season include: The Lodge by T3 Beard Co. (alternate picks if this is sold out include Yukkon & The Bumble) Scent profile: Warm amber, tonka, sandalwood, smokey sweet pipe tobacco, Oud, cedar wood, sweet almond, warm honey. Joy by Can You Handlebar Moustache & Beard Co. (and a link to Goodwill for something a little different) Scent profile: Peppermint, clary sage. Huntsman by The Beard Baron (see website for even more cold classics) Scent profile: Cedar, oak moss, amber. Don't forget to check these businesses' social media accounts (especially Instagram) for potential sales codes. Finally, the boys serve up a fisting of beer reviews, as they all drink Fistmas, a holiday red ale with ginger and orange peel, by Revolution Brewing. Happy holidays!

The newest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast is an interview with Rich Balling, founder of the experimental post-hardcore supergroup The Sound of Animals Fighting, former RX Bandits member, and the person behind Pyramids, Sailors With Wax Wings, White Moth, the Handmade Birds record label, and the new hyperpop project Hospital Gown. Hospital Gown's debut album Diamond Life 2 came out earlier this month on Born Losers Records, and TSOAF are gearing up to release their first EP in 14 years, Apeshit, on December 8 via the same label, followed by a tour in January. Rich and I discussed TSOAF's comeback; the multi-genre, multi-generational collaborations on the Hospital Gown album that range from screamo to hyperpop to rap and beyond; some TSOAF history, like the time Equal Vision had to destroy copies of their 2006 sophomore album Lover, the Lord Have Left Us because of an uncleared Neurosis sample; how playing Taylor Swift's Red in the car for his daughters led to a love of pop music; dealing with negative comments on the internet; and much more. Theme music by Michael Silverstein.
Today's episode is an interview with Anthony Green! If you're unfamiliar, Anthony's been a lifer of post-hardcore and underground rock in general for over 20 years, having fronted the bands Circa Survive, Saosin, The Sound of Animals Fighting, and more, and he remains very busy. He's fresh off releasing his excellent new solo album Boom. Done., Circa Survive recently put out two great new EPs, Saosin have upcoming shows (and new music in the works!), and The Sound of Animals Fighting are plotting their return too. We talked about almost everything Anthony's been up to lately, and he also reflected on his early days, talked about some early influences, and looked at the way his own classic material has influenced new bands like SeeYouSpaceCowboy (who recently put out a Saosin cover). He also talked about writing lyrics that open up about mental health, and the ways even major artists like Kendrick Lamar are doing that, and he talked about the idea of achieving longevity as an artist, and discussed some other artists who have done so, like Deftones and (the just-broken-up) mewithoutYou. And just days after we recorded this episode, the news broke that Anthony's fronting the new supergroup L.S. Dunes, which also features members of Thursday, My Chemical Romance, and Coheed & Cambria.
Rx Bandits are an American four-piece band from California. The band formed in 1995 in Orange County, California. They have appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Bamboozle, and plenty of club shows throughout the world I think. In 2001, after touring on their third album "Progress", Rich left the band, citing frustrations he had with certain aspects of the music industry. He later went to form The Sound of Animals Fighting. They released a trilogy of records between 2004 and 2008, and performed only four live shows, following their second release in 2006. The band's live lineup consisted of 12 different musicians and they often employed the use of animal masks to conceal their identity. Rich slid into my DMs on IG a while back after he found the Donuts N' Glory interview (Episode 114) and we've been chatting about old scene stuff since then. I wanted to find out about his days in RX Bandits and The Sound of Animals Fighting, so I asked him onto the podcast, he said yes, and this is what we chat about: Donuts N Glory Flyers How The Sound of Animals Fighting got their sound Shame about the masks No Knife Nick from Link 80 writing him a letter The ska band shame Rejection letter from Mike Park How they got on Drive Thru Fenix TX The Gadjets Finch Being on the Bloodhound Gang's CD And a ton more Go buy his Revolution on Canvas books and check out all of the music he's created by clicking on the links in the show notes. Anthony Green is likely one of the founding fathers of the very scene we discuss so regularly on this podcast, however, may have eluded the pigeon-holing that often comes with being a poster boy for emo. Though his vocal style has been mimicked poorly by countless others in emo-adjacent genres since, Circa Survive, The Sound of Animals Fighting and his solo career have all steered clear of being typical. Notorious for his high-pitched vocal timbre as well as his vast musical output, Green's back catalogue across all his musical identities carries a reputation for quality, experimentation and authenticity. Anthony Green (lead singer of Circa Survive, Saosin, and The Sound of Animals Fighting) opens up about his struggles with addiction and living with bipolar disorder. He describes how his distorted self-image manifested into disordered eating and drug and alcohol abuse, and details his first stay in rehab and being misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. Mayim breaks down the clinical definition, types, and dual-diagnoses associated with bipolar disorder, and opens up about her own father's struggle with the affliction. She and Anthony discuss the dopamine loop and how this can also apply to technology, and highlight the importance of tackling addiction one step at a time, having an outlet to communicate, and exercising patience with those who are struggling. Anthony explains his process for accepting his diagnoses and managing his stressors and triggers, and how he has been able to repurpose his mania to use as a hack for improving his creativity as an artist.National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255 // https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/Anthony Green's new live album "Live at Studio 4": https://memorymusic.limitedrun.com/products/707405-anthony-green-live-at-studio-4?view=f15452BialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

On today's episode, he talks about the influence of 9/11 and end-of-world prophecies on his career trajectory; how Grace is the meeting ground of delicacy and power and should imbue all creative acts; and how fixing the world's economy at times seems less of daunting proposition than being a good parent. Keith and Tommy sit down with Keith Goodwin of Good Old War. We discuss Keith's early days in the Bucks County scene, his first band Days Away, the recording of their now classic 2005 LP "Mapping and Invisible World", band ups and downs and their eventual demise. We also discuss the formation of Good Old War, performing with Anthony Green and the Sound of Animals Fighting, life, addiction and more.
For the first full length episode of The Musicians Guild I wanted to stay close to home, and there are few people I've shared my musical home with longer than my brother and bandmate Matt Embree. Vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and deep thinker are just some of the many trades and titles he has collected over the years. In this conversation we discuss early touring days of RX, songwriting and creative habits/tendencies, Frank Zappa, Metallica's use of subpar drumming and many other things I'm forgetting. It's not uncommon for Matt and I to have phone conversations that last an hour or two so this conversation was just a fraction of all the things we normally discuss. I can already tell that I'll have to have him back for more episodes. Enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we welcome Anthony Green from Circa Survive, Saosin and the Sound of Animals Fighting. My history with Anthony goes back to the early days of Circa Survive and working alongside him at Equal Vision Records for the Juturna and On Letting Go album releases. As the years passed, we stayed in touch and would see each other as you do when a band rolls through town. Anthony was always super into what I was doing with Washed Up Emo and check in when I’d post something about The Promise Ring or Braid. Anthony came along at an amazing time for punk rock and rode the wave with Circa Survive to heights not afforded many and still can play anywhere in the world for his solo material or with Circa Survive. In the hour we chatted, we got to catch up in thoughts on emo, sneaking up on stage to ask Thursday, who he didn’t know, about joining a certain band. Plus, how I forced Circa Survive to do a Fuse TV event for a girl that really just wanted Panic! at the Disco and where he is now and what he would have said to himself 10 years ago. His new solo album “Would You Still Be In Love” is out now and he’s touring the 10th anniversary of “Avalon” his debut LP now. In episode 1 of Joyous Eclectic we listen to what makes different guitar solos good and not-so-good. Listener submission provided by Wyatt Lampley. After the break we talk about Physical vs. Digital music, vinyl and how we can best listen to music moving forward. Many times animals find themselves being abused at the hands of humans--and the fight's not fair. Animals cannot speak to defend themselves or stand up for their own rights (without a human advocate). But there are times, when animals get fed up and fight back! In this episode, we explore the topic of animals who take matters into their own hands (or paws) in the face of abuse. Join hosts J and D, Saturday January 24th at 5pm Central, as we explore this topic.

Now while we don’t condone dog fights, cock fights, or other forms of animal cruelty, when the animals in question are fictional, and are already maiming and killing, it seems reasonable enough to toss the little buggers in the ring and let them go at it. Entering the ring this week are Rocket Raccoon and Dex-Starr! VOTE MAJOR SPOILERS DISCUSSION: Starman Omnibus Volume 3 In this new, third volume, Starman’s hometown of Opal City is terrorized by Dr. Pip, an eccentric bomber. And with no demands from the mad villain, both Starman and the local authorities are unable to track him down.
