Celebrating Emotion Is Dead: BRETT DETAR From THE JULIANA THEORY Reflects On The Impact And Future Of The Band

Interview by Angela CroudaceAs The Juliana Theory prepares to celebrate the anniversary of their seminal album Emotion is Dead with a special Australian tour, frontman Brett Detar shares his thoughts on the album's creation, its unexpected impact, and what fans can expect in the future.Looking back, Brett recalls the humble beginnings of the album, created when he was just 21. “We were five kids from a small town who recorded in a tiny converted garage studio,” he says. “We made the album for very little money, and to think that it has had such an enduring impact—people telling us they named their child after our band or got married to a song off the record—is humbling.” Reflecting on how time has passed, he adds, “It's wild to think that more time has passed since Emotion is Dead was made than I had lived at that point.”When it comes to the rapid rise to success the band experienced, Brett admits it was a gradual process. “We played local shows for a while, and then suddenly, after our first album Understand This as a Dream, we noticed the crowd size was doubling at venues. It was a shocking but exciting moment, but we were so young, we didn't quite grasp how special it was,” he recalls. The upcoming tour marks a full circle moment for The Juliana Theory, as they join forces with The Spill Canvas, another beloved band from their era. Brett recounts a unique experience from 2019 when the two bands toured together in an unexpected way. “We did a US tour, but we played as just an acoustic duo. That tour reignited our passion for making music together, and it led to new songs, new recordings, and ultimately, us signing to Equal Vision.”Discussing the creation of Emotion is Dead, Brett explains the shift in the band's approach after their first record. “We wanted to expand beyond just making a fast, poppy emo record. We wanted to experiment with longer songs, heavier sounds, and even throw in some Pink Floyd-inspired moments.” The album's title, Emotion is Dead, came about in a joking conversation during the van ride, with Brett and the band brainstorming what would later become an iconic, yet tongue-in-cheek, statement about the genre.Despite the album's association with the “emo” label, Brett admits the band has never fully embraced the term. “At first, we thought it fit, but then it started feeling limiting. We've always tried to push boundaries and not just fit into one box.”Bret neatly wrapped up his feelings, saying; “It feels special to see how much Emotion is Dead still means to people, and it's even more exciting to bring new music into the mix."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Join us on a transformative journey as we navigate the evolving landscape of spirituality and bhakti, focusing on the necessity of adapting timeless principles to various cultural contexts. We discuss the importance of approaching our spiritual journeys with humility, a beginner's mindset, and an openness to new perspectives. Through personal anecdotes, we reveal how unconscious bias and cultural assumptions impact spiritual circles. Hear about surprising encounters that highlight how quickly people judge based on appearances and delve into the presence of racism within the Bhakti yoga community. Join us as we explore the intersection of spirituality and inclusivity through interfaith dialogue and the issue of cultural appropriation. In this episode of 'Rise with Radhanath Swami', the importance of spiritual vision is discussed as being something that can make or break us as souls on the journey to enlightenment.   When we love what we are doing, when we are centred in service to others, we can inspire society to no end. Leaving a legacy of compassion and service wherever we may go.   Through great examples of unlikely people dealing with challenges in strength and integrity, we are reminded that a life worth living isn't necessarily easy. Developing equal vision in happiness and distress, towards rich and poor, and in all dualities of life, can aid us in ascending to a level of being able to see the unity in the diversity of all living things. Seeing all beings as beings of love. This is the essence of Bhakti.

Curiosity is definitely the buzz word for this interview on ScaleUp Radio.  I interviewed Manda Graham who is the director of Equal Vision, which is a social enterprise, a Community Interest Company.  Manda is also the founder of something called the Curiosity Museum – which is an immersive careers advisory service for students.  And this is where it gets really interesting, because they had just got to the point of launching a live version into schools literally in March of 2020 as COVID hit so they've had to do that overused word - pivot.  There's a lot of interesting stuff around how Amanda has been able to do that and the support that she's had.  All sorts of great stuff you'll hear about how one of the constraints early days was things had to fit in the back of her Volkswagen Polo. So that's a constraint that I've not heard before, certainly on ScaleUp Radio.  So really interesting, different ways of looking at things, a lot about the schools and the education market. Also some thinking around sprint methodology. Some really, really interesting things from Manda on this discussion.   Manda can be found here: linkedin.com/in/mandagraham https://www.equalvisioncic.co.uk/curiosity-museum/     Resources   Sprint by Jake Knapp - https://www.waterstones.com/book/sprint/jake-knapp/john-zeratsky/9780593076118   Asana - https://asana.com/   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. Hospital Gown's debut album Diamond Life 2 came out earlier this month on Born Losers Records, and TSOAF are gearing up to release their first EP in 14 years, Apeshit, on December 8 via the same label, followed by a tour in January. Rich and I discussed TSOAF's comeback; the multi-genre, multi-generational collaborations on the Hospital Gown album that range from screamo to hyperpop to rap and beyond; some TSOAF history, like the time Equal Vision had to destroy copies of their 2006 sophomore album Lover, the Lord Have Left Us because of an uncleared Neurosis sample; how playing Taylor Swift's Red in the car for his daughters led to a love of pop music; dealing with negative comments on the internet; and much more.   Theme music by Michael Silverstein.

I heard about Never Loved through Kenton Remmey, the singer from the OC band Silence of you. They got a tour coming up together supporting Armor for Sleep (as of today, it's still happening!). Well, I'm glad he did because Camm's journey is pretty inspiring for new bands. After a few years of playing just for fun in the Florida scene, he craved for more. He wanted to show up with a professional project and start a real career. His talent convinced Matt Squire (Underoath, Panic! at the Disco, Sum 41, Simple Plan, All Time Low, Good Charlotte, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, and many more) to help him materialize his vision. A few tracks later, Camm formed the band around his project and they soon signed with the great label Equal Vision. Sounds like a fairy tale? I bet it's more the result of being smart, hardworking, and talented! We talk about all that, the Florida scene, and the LA mythical venues in this episode. Together, we're starting a conversation about saving Rock N' Roll in the City of Angels. Casually talking from the Sunset Strip, we are launching a movement with our collective called Team Nowhere and we are calling artists & fans to unite. If you are in a band, or if you're a photographer, a developer, a hairstylist, whatever your craft... In other words, if you really want to help to put Rock music back on the map for the ten upcoming years... well let's build a community together, and let's plan concrete actions to make a positive shift in our industry. Rock isn't dead, the Sunset strip isn't dead. But only if we want it! #Teamnowhere #Hangingonsunset @team_nowhere @hangingonsunset --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/support

For this episode of Renaissance Soul, I’m joined by Dave Stephens, founding member and vocalist of the Troy, Michigan metalcore band We Came As Romans, as we talk about their debut album To Plant A Seed. Originally released on November 3, 2009 via Equal Vision Records, a deluxe edition of the album was released on January 18, 2011 which includes one bonus track and a DVD titled To Plant a DVD. In covering this monumental debut album, we talk about the beginnings of the band through their early touring and their two EPs, Dreams and Demonstrations, both self released in 2008 before getting signed to Equal Vision. We also go track-by-track throughout the album and Stephens shares any stories he has about the song or making of it. We also touch on the vocal contributions of the late Kyle Pavone, who passed away in 2018, from this album. We Came As Romans originally were going to tour this album to both celebrate it and retire the songs from it for live shows when the pandemic hit and were only able to perform a handful or so shows before all live music got cancelled. We discuss the reasoning for that tour as they are set to do a live stream on April 23rd playing To Plant A Seed in its entirety online. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Brett Detar of The Juliana Theory over Zoom audio! The Juliana Theory have returned with new song and video “Can’t Go Home” – their first new music in over 15 years.“I think people are feeling uncertain right now,” said songwriter and vocalist Brett Detar. “I’d say that it’s pretty impossible not to feel that way. As humans I imagine we’ve always innately known that there’s no way to turn back the hands of time to simpler days but 2020 has fed us all an uncomfortably large dose of unfamiliarity – ‘wayward stranger days.’ Is this uncertainty a new normal? I’m not sure but I’ve always used music as a coping mechanism and I think this year I’ve needed it more than at any other point in my life. Many of us are feeling isolated and removed. Joyous collective experiences like live music shows are gone for the foreseeable future along with many of the other communal ways we come together as humans. Longing for that cathartic sense of collective unity one only gets from a gathering of people, we tried our best to capture the sound and feeling of a large group of people singing a simple melody together in unison in the chorus.”“Making new Juliana Theory music was not really something I thought would ever happen again. If you had asked me 5 or 6 years ago if the band would ever make new music I would have emphatically said ‘no,’” Detar continues. “But in 2019 lead guitarist and founding member Josh Fiedler and I were asked out of the blue to do a 30-show acoustic tour playing our old songs in a way we never had before.” Thanks to good timing in between films (Detar is now an accomplished composer for film including The Devil Inside and Brahms: The Boy II), the duo, who met in a high school guitar class, decided to give the acoustic tour a shot even though their closeness had waned over the band’s hiatus. “Much to my delight the tour ended up being one of the most enjoyable things either of us had done in years. We truly had a great time hanging out and performing together and got along perfectly. If anything, I’d say the time we shared gave us each a new-found respect for one another both as musicians and more importantly as humans. Continuing to make music together after the tour ended just felt right – almost like coming home in a way.”The Juliana Theory rose through Western Pennsylvania’s post-hardcore scene of the late 90s and early 00s and went on to become one of the most highly cited influences for the next generation of alternative artists. Always willing to push the boundaries, the band unabashedly mixed their punk rock and pop influences into a sound well ahead of their time. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of the team as The Juliana Theory write their next chapter,” Equal Vision’s Dan Sandshaw said. “‘Can’t Go Home’ feels modern, yet somehow familiar. This is such an important song for the soundtrack of 2020.”“Can’t Go Home” is written by Brett Detar and long-time collaborator Benjamin Romans (LP, Carly Rae Jepsen) and co-produced by Courtney Ballard (Jessie J), Benjamin Romans, and Brett Detar and marks a new era for the band. “The Juliana Theory never did shy away from changing our sonic identity from release to release but the emotional core of our songs has always remained the same. At no point have we ever wanted to repeat ourselves and retread the same worn out territory and try and fail at recreating a past era of the band,” said Detar. “I like to think this is exactly what The Juliana Theory in 2020 should sound like.”We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Tom Mullen (Washed Up Emo) over Zoom audio! Author, podcaster, and music industry veteran Tom Mullen has announced a September 7, 2020 release date for Anthology of Emo Volume 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017's acclaimed Anthology of Emo Volume 1, which sold out in less than a year and garnered praise and coverage from the likes of Vice/Noisey, The New York Times, Brooklyn Vegan, Kerrang, UPROXX, Billboard, SiriusXM, Alternative Press and many more. Volume 1 will also be re-released in early September, the title's first reprint in 3 years. The books are now available to pre-order separately or as a specially-priced bundle with a limited poster at www.AnthologyofEmo.com.Anthology of Emo Volume 2 continues what the first volume started, with interviews from heavyweights in the music genre including Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World), Chris Conley (Saves the Day), Bob Nanna (Braid), authors and scene veterans Trevor Kelley and Leslie Simon, and the final interview of emo scene legend, Jon Bunch (Sense Field) prior to his untimely death in 2017. The book includes rare photographs and printed ephemera, an introduction by Tom Mullen, and a forward by writer and author Luke O’Neil (Welcome to Hell World).About Anthology of Emo Volume 2In 2017, after 100+ interviews with artists and those involved with the emo and hardcore scene for the critically acclaimed Washed Up Emo Podcast, Tom Mullen, on the 10th anniversary of WashedUpEmo.com, introduced Anthology of Emo. The book, selling out in less than a year, compiled the best stories from the podcast and features rare and unseen photos and ephemera. The follow-up, Volume 2, picks up where the previous book left off and features interviews, quotes, and more from key figures and veterans of the scene. For a word that’s often misunderstood, the Anthology of Emo series is an informative companion and faithful guide to the genre of emo. Tom Mullen is a music industry executive and veteran podcaster. He’s spent time at Atlantic, Equal Vision, Vagrant, TVT, EMI and Sony, where he was a 2016 Clio and Cannes Lions winner for his work with Bob Dylan. In 2007, he founded WashedUpEmo.com, a destination for the entire history of emo. The site and podcast has been featured in The New Yorker, AV Club, Pitchfork, The New York Times, Paste, Billboard, Spin, Village Voice, Stereogum, Chicago Reader, Noisey, and Brooklyn Vegan. In 2011, it expanded to a podcast and DJ night in NYC. In 2014, he launched IsThisBandEmo.com, a site helping the world understand which bands are emo or not with a smile and a wink.A proud native of Vermont, he lives in Los Angeles and spends his free time documenting and archiving the emo genre for future generations. A now popular outlet, audio, proved fruitful almost instantly in 2011. The Washed Up Emo Podcast started after Tom realized a noticeable void of podcasts from the genre. Utilizing music industry connections and his background as a college radio DJ, it quickly snowballed with critical acclaim after a few episodes and now has over 1 million plays and continues to be the definitive podcast for the emo genre. The never-ending mountain of guests over the almost decade of episodes have included Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, and American Football. Now, after 170+ episodes, the Washed Up Emo Podcast still has one goal. To represent and document the entire history of emo for all fans of the genre. We want to hear from you! Welcome everyone to This Was The Scene, the podcast that takes a look back at the late 90s / early 2000 Punk scene, I am your host, Mike Doyle. Random Task was a punk band from NJ who frequented hall shows all across the NJ scene. Ben Jorgensen was the drummer but eventually left the band to front Armor for Sleep who got signed to Equal Vision, toured their asses off and eventually decided to close shop. If you haven’t heard Car Underwater then you should go on Spotify and listen to it as soon as this episode is over because it’s the shatttttt. Random Task was the younger band in the scene who were solid dudes to hang out with any time I saw them at shows. I typically talked to Ben and Evan and still think Evan’s write up of my band’s CD for his zine Braceface was shit and he should go back and do a better one. I reached out to Ben and asked if he’d like to talk about summers passed and he said that he would like that. And this is what we talked about. I’d also like to mention that Jeff is super fucking nice and his musical talents have passed down to his daughter who has a band camp page with some really fucking good songs that you should check out at melody.bandcamp.com I got Jeff on the phone and this is what we talked about: What his high school life was like Being scared of his first punk show Playing their first show with Inside Out How they started touring What he writes about Is it odd having his daughter listen to his songs? Recently on the roof of my work during lunch, Tobin and I talked about his history in the business. What was really great about this episode was that It touches on many things young and old bands ask about. A truly deep look into the thoughts and actions of an independent label that’s doing some big things. It’s our little version of This Could Be Your Life. Zech Pluister (lead vocals) and TJ Horansky (guitar/vocals) talk about why they're "basically the Al Capone of pop punk in Chicago." They also discuss: *How salsa verde "gives our band life" *The "diaper" strategy of taco-eating *Their new record deal with Equal Vision: How they got it, and what's coming next *The joy of making videos *Their friend Shayna, who happened to be walking down the street as we were recording. She says "hi" in the middle of the show. *Why TJ may soon be roaming the halls at Proviso East *Their excellent song "Burning At Both Ends" *Their territorial ruling over two blocks of Logan Square. The thing is, they can never venture beyond those two blocks. It's kinda like the Lion King. *Their Riot Fest after-show on 9/17 at Township Listen, share and enjoy!

Through his various jobs in music marketing, Tom Mullen has always been and still is a fan, first and foremost. Making a website for one of his favorite groups led to a storied career with punk/indie labels like Equal Vision and Vagrant to larger companies like EMI and Legacy Recordings/Sony Music, where he is currently Senior Director of Creative and Marketing Partnerships. He's had the pleasure of working directly with icons such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Cyndi Lauper and more, though indie-rock fans know him well as the founder and voice behind the Washed Up Emo podcast and IsThisBandEmo.com, a search engine devoted to the seemingly ageless debate about where bands stand within the genre. Today, we discuss the venerable emo museum of videos, flyers and other memorabilia that fans and bands send his way, some out-of-print seven-inches he was recently gifted, why MTV called him about rare Nirvana video footage he unearthed and JeffBuckleyCollection.com -- worked on directly with the Buckley family -- which allows fans to digitally browse through the late singer/songwriter's record collection. Following up on our episode on Say Anything's ...Is a Real Boy, we discuss "Judas Decapitation" from their album Hebrews (2014, Equal Vision). Bill and Brian discuss how the band continued to mature and challenge themselves 10 since their breakthrough record with an album featuring zero guitars. Afterwards, we get into a pretty interesting discussion about the state of music and music discovery thanks to an email from a listener, Shane, who questions if the accessibility of music has a deminishing effect on the enjoyment of it.
