In this sermon, Pastor Kevin looks at Genesis 32-33. As Jacob returns home, he fears being reunited with his brother, Esau. Will Esau still be angry? Will Jacob be able to appease him? Before Jacob and Esau reunite, God meets Jacob "face to face." Through this encounter, Jacob learns an important lesson: the greatest approval needed is not that of man, but of God.

As Jacob returns to the promised land in Genesis 32, he's attacked in the middle of the night. As the two men struggle until the break of day, it slowly begins to dawn on Jacob that there's something special about his wrestling partner. In fact, by the end of the encounter, it's revealed to Jacob that he's actually been “striving with God.” Many commentators suggest that the patriarch wrestled with God in order to receive a divine blessing, but is that really what's going on here? At what point does Jacob even realize this man's true identity? Shane Rosenthal discusses this mysterious passage with Matt Foreman and Doug Van Dorn, authors of The Angel of the Lord. __________ To receive our free INNtro kit which includes the current issue of Modern Reformation magazine and our most recent set of extended length White Horse Inn CD's, go to whitehorseinn.org/kit __________ Become a partner and you will receive all of the White Horse Inn extended episodes, access to our extensive archive as well as a subscription to our magazine, Modern Reformation. He doesn’t do parties or events. In fact, he’s completely antisocial. How To Master Customer Experience Leadership

The Modern Customer Podcast

A customer focus and strong customer experience starts from the top. In order for companies to be totally customer-centric, they must have strong leaders.  However, we're facing a leadership crisis today where most leaders don't know how to lead. Jacob Morgan (who just happens to be my husband) is a best-selling author and expert on leadership and the future of work. As he was conducting research for his book, The Future Leader, he came across this startling statistic: most people become leaders in their mid to late 20s, but they don't receive formal leadership training until their late 30s or early 40s. That means most leaders go more than a decade without any training. No wonder we have such a lack of strong leadership.  To be effective, leaders have to take training into their own hands. The first step is to create your own definition of leader and leadership. We are surrounded by leadership, but few of us can actually define it. Establishing a definition allows companies to create filters for who they hire and promote. Those filters ensure that the organization is filled with consistently great leaders instead of a mix of great and sub-par leaders.  Jacob's definition of leadership is being a lighthouse. The purpose of a lighthouse is to shine light on ships in the harbor and guide them to safety and success. Similarly, a leader's purpose is to guide their people and organization to success. But a leader lighthouse is useless without ships. Leaders can't just focus on themselves—they must focus on others.  From interviews with more than 140 top CEOs, Jacob created the Notable Nine: the skills and mindsets leaders need to adapt to succeed in the future of work. These skills are crucial to becoming a customer-focused leader and creating a culture of customer centricity.  Mindsets Explorer: Become a perpetual learner, be curious and focus on agility and adaptability. Chef: Balance humanity and technology. Servant: Serve your leaders, your team, your customers and yourself by being humble and vulnerable. Global citizen: Surround yourself with different people and look at the big picture.  Skills Futurist: Look towards the future and think through different scenarios. Yoda: Practice emotional intelligence and empathy. Translator: Develop listening and communication skills Coach: Motivate and engage others and create effective teams across geographies and generations. Technology teen: Embrace new technology and be tech-savvy.  A common element for all leaders, especially those leading through the current uncertainty of COVID-19, is to focus on people, not profits. Successful leaders develop their people, set a vision, engage and coach them to be more successful. They are focused more on engaging their employees than hitting their quarterly revenue goals. As Jacob says, putting people first is a philosophy backed by a set of actions. Don't just believe it—you have to show it.  Customer experience leadership impacts the entire organization. In order for a business to succeed, leaders must focus on people and strive to become lighthouses that guide others to success. How to be faithful when days blur into weeks and months. Well, It’s Blursday, the Upteenth of Meh…Againa sermon by Rev. J. Christy Ramsey DOWNLOAD A LIVE RECORDING Audio from an empty sanctuary and full zoom on a laptop at St. John’s Presbyterian in Reno, Nevada lot on August 23, 2020. Originally given at Lee Vining/Bishop Zoom on July 19 Genesis 28:10-19a Sermons also available free on iTunes Looking for the way to be faithful in the world without gathering with the saints Two sisters were terrors at home, school, neighborhood, everywhere but church. There they were angels because that was God’s house. Well, with the school and church building closed and the parents were stuck with them day after day without any away time or church angel hours. So they do what parents do when they are at their wits end, they called the pastor and asked her to do put the fear of God in them. So the pastor said, “Let me talk to the oldest.” The parent handed the phone to the oldest and the pastor quizzed her, “WHERE IS GOD?” and the oldest said, “At God’s house!” The pastor continued, “Ok, No body is at God’s house, where is God?” The child didn’t know the answer but knew she was in big trouble. She froze. Her sister asked, “What’s wrong?” The oldest pushed mute and answered her: “The Pastor Can’t Find God! She Thinks We Stole Him! Where is God is the question of 2020. Since March we have been spread abroad from west to east to north and south. To homes, laptops, phones, tablets, zoom, YouTube, Facebook. And we wonder, “Where is God when God’s House is Closed?” James Goff had a cartoon in April where the devil is bragging that he closed every church. God is next to him saying, I opened a church in every home. The wave of blogs virtual worship guides and the stream of emails with requests for rulings about what was real worship or real communion flooded the web, twitter, emails and Facebook posts. Christians of a certain age will hear the lament in the question from “On The Willows” from Godspell. Psalm 137:4 How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a foreign land? Rev. Joey Lee, the Executive Presbyter of San (Hos say) says if we complain about lockdown…try being a refugee. We catch up with the heel grabber Jacob who has just started being a refugee on his way toward Haran. He is fleeing his sheltering home and family support because it is not safe to stay there. From favorite son to refugee. In the desert he found a place to stay overnight. There he found God standing beside him tell him that God is with him and will keep him wherever he goes. Jacob’s named the place, Bethel, the house of God. He fled his house and found himself in the house of God. For Christians, the answer to the pastor’s question is not a place, but a person. God acts to make sure we know he is not housebound to a place by Jesus or rather Immanuel, God with Us. Where is God when God’s house is closed? As Jacob found out, God is standing beside us. God is Immanuel, God is with us. God is not housebound. Jacob may leave home, but God’s house goes with him. Psalm 139 has a similar promise most often heard at funerals and memorials. The leaving is magnified in verse: Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night’, even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you. God found Jacob in the desert, but this isn’t a story about Jacob’s ladder to heaven it is about God setting his ladder to heaven wherever we are. God is the subject. Jacob did everything he could to grab his piece of heaven, to secure his place and future. His artful deal swindled his brother out his birthright for a bowl of stew. He tricked his blind father to steal the blessing that was due his brother Esau. He was a heel grabber from birth. Yet there is a reckoning. Today we find him in the desert. Without family, fortune or future; that birthright and blessing cut off by the fear of that is brother would be angry and vengeful. His scheming for all left him with nothing. Yet it isn’t just us who finds him, but God. Who gives him the blessing not of his father for his family, but to be a blessing to all the families of earth. God who replaces his birthright with the promise of the birth of offspring like the dust of the earth. God, who builds Bethel, the house of God around the homeless refugee not artful deals of grasping Jacob. The church is stripped of all of the things we planned, prepared and schemed for over the decades: We have been exiled from our beautiful buildings even our favorite pew… Eye contact is replaced with far away stares. Handshakes and hugs are replaced with video smiles and distant waves. In person, even smiles are masked away And in person means double arms length, too far to hug. Like a modern day Babel, our chorus is fractured solos, we sing together alone; our unison responses jumbled syllables scrambled by the tech tubes that connect our eyes but not our voices. We can no longer receive communion from a neighbors hand but only take it from our own. We are in the desert, alone, in exile from all we have gathered and grabbed, stripped of our birthright and blessing. Sir Winston Churchill is credited with first saying, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” He said it in the mid-1940s as we were approaching the end of World War ll. Jacob doesn’t waste his crisis. He recognized that he is a guest of God’s house wherever he is. Not by his own cunning, but by God’s care. That ladder is not a way to heaven as it is an affirmation of that God’s work is going on, even here. Angels are moving cares up to heaven and messages are coming down us. The supply chain is secure delivering even in the desert even though zoom. And he vows to return to this place where God’s house is. Rev. Joey Lee, also says that when the quarantine hit changes that we been working on for years where made in a weekend. Our tech friendly expansive ministry is reuniting the ex-pats, the homebound, the young, the physically and socially distant, the ones who can’t hear but now can turn up the volume, the ones who can’t walk but now have church delivered, the one who work or play on Sunday morning, let’s not forget this place where God came beside those alone and away from the home. A ladder delivering grace and inviting a connection to God from wherever you are. Virginia City Presbyterian that still has gas light fixtures because they are not convinced electricity might be a fad, hung a video screen in their sanctuary after a unanimous approval from the session so folks weren’t required to touch and pass hymnals and paper. What a faithful response to exile. When I heard that, I asked my echo what the ski conditions in hell were. I don’t know what the future may hold, but I know who holds the future. Ralph Abernathy The quarantine is a forced demonstration that God’s house is not built of our traditions, our schemes and empire building but where people stop to rest and find God beside them. Setting up a ladder to heaven where faith climbs and blessing descends. We can keep the faithful attitude of how God is present where we are instead of trying to jam God into where we were. We can all be like my mother-in-law Kathryn who lives in the desert of Sedona on House Rock Road. We can set up our house rock and say remember, God is here. God is with us where ever we stop and look for God. “He’s Always There” The Lord leads us on with tender care, lifting our burdens to bear He blesses us as we pass on, to what awaits eternal dawn Tho we so often may not see, He’s always there and will always be… J. Paul Horgan “The Poem Painter” 7/17/20 c.

When Jacob wrestled with a man, this man was God himself – which proves that we have been created in the image of God. As Jacob did, we also have permission to wrestle with God. At the burning bush in Exodus 3, God spoke to Moses face to face but Moses hid his face, because he was afraid. In Exodus 33 Moses again spoke to God face to face without fear, because he had built a relationship with God based on real-life events which had changed his life. Face to face communication with each other is very important in this life, because if we cannot master this by practising it, how will we be able to communicate with God – whom we cannot see? By becoming deeply and intimately acquainted with God and recognising and understanding His ways more clearly, we will find grace and favour in His sight and everything we ask from Him, will be granted to us. To get to know our Father better, we need to rest upon his bosom, because there his voice resonates on a different level. The secret to get to know Him better is to listen and take comfort in Him. A moment in the Father’s presence will change everything for you.

America has a conflicted relationship to science. Historically, presidents and Congress have questioned and derided scientific research that is at odds with their beliefs, political and economic interests. At the same time, public confidence in science is growing and evidence of the impacts of climate change on rising sea levels, displacement and migration in coastal communities is now widely accepted. As Jacob Carter, biologist and research scientist from the Union of Concerned Scientists’ Center for Science and Democracy explains, the pushback on science has serious implications for decision-making on issues including climate, energy, transportation and food. If scientific evidence is rejected, how can sound policies be enacted? Jacob points out the unprecedented suppression of science by the Trump Administration, including research and reports issued by federal agencies ranging from the US Environmental Protection Agency to the US Fish and Wildlife Services. Scientists within the federal system are being defunded, censored and prohibited from attending meetings on their areas of study. This aggressive stance has left our federal scientists with a serious morale problem and is dissuading early career scientists from entering the public service pipeline. In fact, the President’s defiling of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration maps, known as SharpieGate, is just one of 120 documented attacks on science by this Administration. The Center for Science and Democracy’s unyielding support for federal scientists extends to the communities most impacted by deregulation and other anti-science actions. As Jacob says, grassroots communities know based what is happening to them and what they need. Their contributions to the Center’s policy recommendations are invaluable. Jacob is heartened by the outpouring of scientists and supporters who showed up for the March on Science around the globe and the fact that public trust in science is at an all-time high.

(Gn.28:10-22;   Ps.91:1-4,14-15;   Mt.9:18-26)   “Know that I am with you; I will protect you wherever you go.”   What the Lord says here to Jacob, He says indeed to all of us:  He will protect us on our journey; let us but take refuge in Him.  Our dearest Jesus is the abode of God, and in Him our souls are safe. As Jacob sets forth alone from the land of Canaan, he fears that he shall not return to this place of His promised inheritance.  But the Lord comes to him in a dream to stand “beside him” and assure him that the promise is firm: “I will never leave you until I have done what I promised you.”  With these words of encouragement and the vision of heaven's ladder still in his mind, Jacob cries out in “solemn wonder” of that place in which the Lord revealed Himself to His servant.  He sets up a memorial stone, thereby to mark “God's abode.” Our psalm today sings of the Lord's protection upon those who trust in Him.  He answers our call in distress, rescues us from “the snare of the fowler,” and gives us refuge.  Thus we “dwell in the shelter of the Most High,” abiding in His shadow, covered by His wings of blessed protection.  “Because he clings to me, I will deliver him,” says our psalmist in the voice of the Lord; and indeed we know that trusting in Him is our salvation. And in our gospel we discover where such refuge lies; we find Him who is the true house of God, and we are shown the faith which is necessary to make our home there.  What Jesus says to the woman, He says to His whole Church: “Courage, daughter!  Your faith has restored you to health.”  Her great faith told her she needed but to “touch his cloak,” but to press up against the walls of the temple that is Christ to find healing.  And the synagogue leader states simply and clearly his faith in the Lord: “My daughter has just died.  Please come and lay your hand on her and she will come back to life.”  Yes, indeed the protection of the Lord, the refuge and strength He is to us in our faith, reaches beyond the grave. Our own journeys can be arduous, brothers and sisters.  At times it can seem as if the Lord is leaving us, as if He is far away.  Faith.  Faith, brothers and sisters, will see us through all difficulties, even death.  We are destined to rise with Him on the last day; we are blessed here now along the way.  Jesus is the ladder which leads to heaven; He Himself is the House of God.  With faith in Him and in His protection, let us climb with the angels to His abode. Today in our hearts let us set up for Him a memorial stone, that we might remember His sacred presence.  For now we do more than touch the tassel of His cloak; He enters us and we enter Him whole.   ******* O LORD, we shall be raised up, if we but trust in you. YHWH, you are our refuge; help us to trust entirely in you.  If we have but faith, we shall be saved from all disease and even death.  We shall dwell with you forever.  For you bless those who trust in you, who seek to do your holy will. To Heaven let us come, dear LORD; send us your Son to carry us there.  He is the ladder upon which we climb, aided by your angels.  How shall we fly unto you if you do not reach down to us?  If you do not call us, we cannot go forth.  Without your protection we shall surely die.  We have no hope but you. You raise the daughter of the faithful man; you heal the hemorrhage of the poor woman.  Into the Promised Land you guide your chosen child, Israel.  You alone are awesome, O God.  You alone save us from distress.  Bring us into your House this day, for your House is a fortress where we take refuge and find our souls secure.

Day 17 of the podcast, reading Genesis 46-47 ESV, read along at: https://www.esv.org/Genesis+46-47/ This is day 17 of our journey. What a blessed reunion! After 22 years, Jacob is finally reunited with his beloved son Joseph. The entire house of Israel travels to Egypt, 70 people in all. They settle in the land and prosper there as Joseph provides for them. As Jacob enters Egypt, he is brought before Pharaoh and blesses the most powerful ruler in the land. As God had once promised, Abraham's family IS a blessing to the nations! Join me in Genesis 46-47 as we witness God's preserving power at work in the house of Israel! Key verses: Genesis 46:3-4 Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. [4] I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.” Genesis 47:7 Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and stood him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Genesis 47:27 Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen. And they gained possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied greatly. All Scriptures are from the ESV. Check out these links for more thoughts on the topic: I really enjoyed listening to a series of sermons on the final act of Genesis. I'll be including them over these next few readings: Genesis 46-47 - http://subspla.sh/qk2bkj5

Engaging the Bible Daily Podcast

A podcast designed to help you engage with the Bible daily! Each day, we begin with a reading assignment, designed to take no longer than a few minutes. Then a few minutes of thoughts, comments and questions follow, to help you more fully engage with the text, and to consider throughout the day or to help you begin journaling. It's not the intent to be exhaustive in covering everything, or even to tell you what you should think about a given text. The main idea is to give you a starting point to begin thinking through and engaging with the text yourself, whether you a seasoned Bible student, or this is your first time reading the Bible. The reading selections are kept purposefully small, to make it as easy as possible to develop the discipline of regular Bible reading, and more importantly Bible engaging! It also helps make it possible to catch up if you fall behind a few days. March 21, 2017: Genesis 48 Jacob, nearing the end of his life, decides to "adopt" Joseph's two oldest sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, and make their inheritance equal with the other sons of Israel. As Jacob is blesing the two children of Joseph, he crosses his hands, and places his right hand on the younger brother, Ephraim. When Joseph notices, he tries to correct his father's "mistake," but Jacob insists that this is how he wanted it. Question to consider: * Why do you think Jacob wanted to elevate his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh, to the status of sons?

This one is no joke. Scott was able to get money from Amazon that was rightfully his, without selling a product. It has to do with product refunds and damaged products that Amazon has processed in the past, and he owes it all to Jacob, today’s guest. The cool thing about it is that today Jacob is going to give you the step by step process for getting the money that is due to your seller account and he’s going to show you how you can use his automated service to get those refunds credited to your account without you having to lift a finger. It sounds too good to be true but it’s not. You can find out the details on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Stumbling across a cash cow in his Amazon seller account. Jacob sort of accidentally came across a situation in his refund reports that tipped him off to the fact that Amazon was holding some money that was due him in a suspension account. It was money that came as a result of customer refunds that were reconciled but Amazon had never given back to him. All it took was a simple inquiry to  Amazon’s seller support and Jacob was able to recover that money on the spot. The more he dug into his reports, the more money he discovered that Amazon had not credited to him properly. On this episode Jacob will show you how he discovered his “cash cow” and how you can use the same tactics to get money that is rightfully yours. Have you checked out your Amazon Seller Refund Report? Inside your seller account you can run all kinds of reports that show you the status of your sales, damaged products, refunds, and other variables that have to do with your products on Amazon. One of those is the “refund report.” It has to do with refunds that have been issued to your customers and the credits and debits to your account that correspond to those refunds. It may sound odd, but quite often you are credited money through the refund process and Amazon lists that money on your refund reports. By comparing that number with actual money you’ve been credited, you can find money that Amazon owes you but you’ve never received. Check out this episode to find out how you can get that money back immediately. Inventory damage is another area where you might be owed some money by Amazon. With any massive warehouse operation like Amazon you are going to eventually have some of your products damaged during handling. It’s part of how the business works. Amazon is usually very good about noting damage and giving you credit for it so that you don’t lose money because of their mistakes. But you don’t always actually receive that money, even though Amazon has noted the damage. On this episode Scott’s guest is going to show you how to investigate damaged products to discover if you’re owed money from Amazon. You’ll want to listen so you can get the cash you’re owed. How to go from unhappy to body-painted, half-naked happiness! ...with Jacob Sokol This week, I'm talking to Jacob Sokol, a life coach who helps twenty to thirty year olds create a life with more happiness, more fulfilment, and getting paid to do what they love.  He helps people follow their hearts while bringing their heads. Through his company Sensophy, Jacob has brought together a community of over 12,000 soul-siblings while creating a multiple 6-figure coaching biz in under 3 years. When he's not leading retreats in Bali or coaching at home in NYC, he's either listening to hardcore hip-hop or cuddling with his two cats. We started the conversation with me asking Jacob how come I'd seen a photo of him half naked and covered in body paint. :) Jacob rolls back a a few years and shares his story of discovering what it really means to be a happy and fulfilled human being. What you'll learn in this show: As children were often told "This is how it is. These are the rules. This is what's important." and then most of us keep on being told that as adults. There's something inside most of us that feels that what we're being told doesn't feel right or doesn't make sense (especially given most of the adults telling us the 'right' way to live seem miserable and unfulfilled!) but it's not clear what the alternative is, or even if there is one! If we stay in a situation where we're around people who believe and keep confirming our stories about who we are, it can be seriously hard to see what's true and what is simply years of beliefs and conditioning. I loved Jacob's example of how he went on his trip and then began to realise that he wasn't his thoughts. Nature's taking care of business, it's just about understanding how to listen. As Jacob described it 'the universe speaks universe', the more we get in touch with who we are before all the stories about ourselves, the more we're able to hear what's good for us.

First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa

There are many ways to say goodbye and each time we move on in life, more ways are created. Each way implies their own shades of emotion. Sadness, happiness, reluctance, or a mixture of many things. As Jacob prepares to leave the congregation after 3 years there are many goodbyes to be said. Come hear the goodbyes and say goodbye yourself.

My guest for episode #221 is Jacob Stoller, author of a book that was just released: The Lean CEO: Leading the Way to World-Class Excellence. It's available now through Amazon or you can learn more through his book's website. As Jacob explains, he's a journalist, not a Lean practitioner, and he interviewed CEOs across different industries to get their thoughts on Lean management. We discuss topics including how CEOs get exposed to Lean thinking, why humility is so important, what "respect for people" means in the Lean context, and reasons why more CEOs don't embrace Lean. Did Six Sigma and Dr. Deming come up in his interviews? You'll also hear a bit about Bob Brody, the CEO at Franciscan St. Francis Health, which was featured in my Healthcare Kaizen books. As Jacob returns to the place where he first encountered God, he realizes that he has allowed his life and his home to become compromised. He calls his family to rid themselves of the ungodly influences that have crept into their hearts and into their home. Then Jacob buries the idols once and for all. This passage is a good reminder to all of us that we must regularly assess the sinful things we allow to creep into our lives, or carry over from our past, and bury them! Husbands and fathers must especially fight for their families and be the spiritual leaders God has called them to be.
