And it really doesn't come down to sexual orientation, it comes down to values and how I'm able to connect with people who really align with who I am.” “When it comes to using social media for client attraction, content is maybe 20% of the game. The other 80% is the engagement, the conversations—really connecting with your ideal clients.” “If you're not connecting on a personal 1:1 level with your ideal clients on social media, then you're not going to get clients on social media.” “People only want to work with other people that they really like and trust. The only way to build that trust is to show up as yourself.” Jacob Ratliff is a Client Attraction Coach and entrepreneur based in Asheville, North Carolina. Jacob has been around the real estate business since he was twelve as his father is a Real Estate Broker/ Investor and has worked in this industry since before Jacob was born. Jacob joins me today to share how he got started in the real estate business and managed to wholesale his first house when he was 17 years old. Jacob explains how he got started flipping houses with his dad and how he learned about wholesale deals. He talks about how he almost gave up on his first deal after a seller tried to take advantage of him. Jacob also shares some of the strategies that he used to teach himself about flipping and wholesales, and what you should do if you are just starting. "You fully need to understand the concept of whatever it is going to be, right? If you're going to go trade stocks-if you're going to go and get into crypto, why would you just put your money in there if you don't understand how the market works?" – Jacob Blank "It's only been like two years and it's just crazy that from your first deal, in such a short amount of time, you can become really, really successful." – Jacob Blank "I'm still in the trenches. I'm still closing deals. I need to make sure that these guys are 80% of me. So that way they can get as many deals that I'm getting." – Jacob Blank "If you're trying to figure out how to start, learn everything you can because right now there is more free knowledge out there than ever before.” – Jacob Blank This week on Fliptalk: What got Jacob interested in flipping houses and wholesale deals at a young age The steps Jacob took to prepare for his first wholesale deal How Jacob was almost played by a seller after signing a contract Why knocking a deal out of the park on your first try is not always a good thing Jacob's strategies to getting deals How Jacob manages his business today and his goals for the future What Jacob recommends you do if you're just starting out Why Jacob is expanding out of Arizona, and into Texas and California Resources Mentioned: The Call Genius Connect with Jacob Blank: Connect with Jacob Blank on Facebook Connect with Jacob Blank on Instagram Connect with Jacob Blank on TikTok Jacob Blank's Youtube Channel Rate, Review, Learn and Share Thanks for tuning into the FlipTalk podcast! Houston Week continues with Day 4 featuring the awesome and talented Jacob Medina. Jacob started his design firm, Jacob Medina Interiors in 2016 and now people seek out this boutique interior design firm for their expertise on everything from clean and handsome to luxe and funky. Jacob talks with us about his interesting path to design, starting with a degree in biology and teaching himself many of the basics and important technological skills. He shares the inspiration behind his handsome style featuring clean lines and a little twist of style and funk and tells us why there is no such thing as too many chairs. Jacob also gives us his real thoughts on using gray, how to emulate his purple kitchen, and the importance of starting with a cabinet plan in the kitchen. Jacob makes us laugh (and agree) when he makes the analogy between a good designer and a good marriage counselor — trying their best to make everyone happy with the end results! What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Jacob is not your average designer — he started with a degree in biology and was pre-med! He taught himself many of the programs he knows today. Jacob and his team focus on everything from residential projects including new construction, home renovation, and decorating. Yes, he is chair obsessed! There is no such thing as too many chairs, especially once we start entertaining again! How Jacob uses custom pieces and vintage to capture the essence of what the client is looking for in their soul. Gray will be here to stay, but Jacob tells us how to use it responsibly without making it boring or drab. Jacob talks about painting a kitchen a light mauve / purple color — and it works! The importance of starting with a cabinet plan. Ideas for keeping your kitchen neutral but adding a bold colored backsplash. Colors Jacob wants to see more inclusion of mustard yellow, rusty colors, and more patterns! We also talk about mixing plaids and florals and warm / cool tones. Changing the front door can make such a big difference! Everyone needs a little funky art in their life. Hacks for testing paint on your wall, and finding your favorite whites! Decorating Dilemma Even though we talked a lot about finding your best white paint color in this episode, Jacob doesn’t think white would be best here. A pale greige would be a good place to start. Check out Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray for a starter idea! We think moving the desk to where the table is facing the window could be a great idea and less boxed in. A square or rectangle table would be best, or maybe a banquette to go with the table you’ve already got, but not a round or oval table. A navy wall could feel neutral and not too much with some larger art on the long wall. As far as your coffee table, if it serves a function such as storage or a space to eat, then we can keep it. If not, you may want three different-sized tables for drinks instead! Mentioned in This Episode: Jacob Medina Why is it so hard to choose a paint color? @jacobmedinainteriordesign

When we're kids, we explore the ins and outs of what it means to be human and we don't care nearly as much about what other people think of us. Because of that, we do some pretty weird stuff, and in hindsight, a lot of that stuff is really funny. In fact, thinking back to when we were kids and had more childlike wonder and enthusiasm about the world can not only be a great perspective on for writing a joke, but it can also be a reminder to not take ourselves so seriously. Michigan comedian Jacob Barr joins us to talk about the really weird thing he did as a kid that any childhood psychologist would question as a red flag, when in reality, it was just innocent fun. We also talk about: -The small world of the midwestern comedy scene. -Jacob's bit about the weird "kink" he had as a kid. -The authenticity of sharing personal narratives onstage. -How Jacob gets away with being mean to the audience. -Leaving out story details if they don'r add to the joke. -Being comfortable collaborating with other comedians. -The dangers of taking an off-the-cuff comment or tag that worked in the moment and putting it on paper. -Drawing from personal experiences instead of sharing grander opinions. -Being bullies as kids. -The trick of being authentic about your inauthenticity. -Prank calls. -Nate Bargatze's bit on childhood toys. -How we're imprinted upon as kids to play certain gender and societal roles. -The reason Steve doesn't want to be TOO good with kids. -How we're our truest selves as kids and how it's conditioned out of us. -The joke-writing tactic of applying childlike curiosity to adult situations. -Weird childhood fears. -And more! Message TranscriptAlan Kirkpatrick (00:01): Good morning, Grace Place family, both on campus and on our online campus. We're glad you're here today. Second Samuel beginning at verse 10. I'm sorry. Second Samuel chapter 10 beginning of verse 12 is our reading for today. Be of good courage and let us be strong for our people and for our cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in his sight. So Joe AB the, uh, and the people who were with him, drew near for the battle against the Syrians. What are we this segment for you from a book that was written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. And it's the section where he talks about the arrest. And I want to read this to you before we get started today, he writes the majority, sit quietly and dare to hope since you aren't guilty, then how can they arrest you? It's a mistake.Alan Kirkpatrick (01:08):They are already dragging you along by the collar. And you still keep on exclaiming to yourself. It's a mistake. They'll set things straight and let me out. Maybe he was guilty. But as for you, you were obviously innocent. There are no, there are logical. These are logical people. They will set things right. Again, why then should you run away? And how can you resist right? Then after all, you'll only make the situation worse. You'll make it more difficult for them to sort out this mistake. And it isn't just, you, you don't put up a resistance of some kind. You even walk down the stairs on tiptoe, as you are ordered to do so, your neighbors won't hear at what exact point then should one resist when one's belt is taken away. When one is ordered to face into the corner, when one crosses the threshold of one's home and arrest consists of a series of incidental irrelevancies of a multitude of things that do not matter. And there seems no point in arguing about any one of them individually, especially at a time when the thoughts of the person arrested are wrapped tightly about the big question, what for the arrest, the evil Marxist inAlan Kirkpatrick (03:00):Soviet union mastered the arrests.Alan Kirkpatrick (03:05):They learned thatAlan Kirkpatrick (03:05):People would comply easilyAlan Kirkpatrick (03:08):With little fuss, no needAlan Kirkpatrick (03:11):Send armed troops, or bring some kind of intention to the subject of the arrest. They could take them by surprise at night while they slept, or while they dined at the favorite restaurant while they were on vacation or while they were in the break room of their workplace. One of the stories he tells about a woman who comes over to the table of a man and leads him out of the restaurant and into custody. So easy. It was for them to arrest someone and take them away. And in their minds, they struggled with the issue of I'm innocent and sooner or later, they'll sort these things out and they'll find out that I really don't belong here. Why was it so easy when faced with the evils of Marxism that many people were just arrested so easily, it has to do with the people believed that justice would win out because they were truly innocent, that they hadn't really committed a crime against the state. And, and they were innocent and sooner or later someone would figure this out and someone would come to the rescue and release them. That belief is even present today in our world, in our circumstances.Alan Kirkpatrick (04:36):And it is reallyAlan Kirkpatrick (04:38):Kind of centered in this belief system that the innocence of, of a person will always prevail. And then in the end, justice will win out. And it is, it's wrapped around a kind of fundamental belief in all of us in the goodness that resides in all of mankind. And we believe that maybe this person may not be good or that person may not be good, but sooner or later, the justice of our situation will arrive on the desk of that person who has goodness, that one person who is able to exact, uh, look over our situation without bias and, and recognize that we are truly innocent and will rightAlan Kirkpatrick (05:25):Wrong. And Jesus spoke to thisAlan Kirkpatrick (05:29):Mark chapter 10, verse 17 through 18. It's significant that we understand this. It's crucial that we understand as believers, what Jesus is saying here, and that we learn to live with this understanding and that it is at the root of our basic understanding about mankind.Alan Kirkpatrick (05:52):And I'll read thatAlan Kirkpatrick (05:53):This passage to you. It says now he was going out on the road, talking about Jesus. And one came running and knelt before him and ask himAlan Kirkpatrick (06:04):Good teacher. What shall I?Alan Kirkpatrick (06:07):Well, I do that. I may inheritAlan Kirkpatrick (06:10):Eternal life. Jesus immediately, uh, speaks to him about his greeting. That's based in that understanding that all are good. And Jesus says to him, why do you call me good? No oneAlan Kirkpatrick (06:30):Is good, but God, that is no one is good. But one that isAlan Kirkpatrick (06:37):God, Jesus.Alan Kirkpatrick (06:39):I wanted to bring a baseline understanding into the life of this person, seeking eternal life. You are not going to find the answers in a another person. You're not going to find remedy justice and redemption in the best that society hasAlan Kirkpatrick (06:57):Offer, butAlan Kirkpatrick (07:00):You are coming to me and I'm telling you right away that there is only oneAlan Kirkpatrick (07:05):Who is good. Yeah.Alan Kirkpatrick (07:07):There is only one who has good intentions for your life. A good purpose, a good outcome for you. And that is good.Alan Kirkpatrick (07:16):God alone.Alan Kirkpatrick (07:18):Goodness is an attribute of God. And man, without God is incapable of divine, consistent goodness,Alan Kirkpatrick (07:26):Character. We all needAlan Kirkpatrick (07:30):God living in us in order to have the goodness of God full out towards others. Genesis chapter six, verse five, as another reminder to us of mankind.Alan Kirkpatrick (07:43):Oh my goodness. ThenAlan Kirkpatrick (07:45):Lord saw that the wickedness of man Genesis chapter six, verse five, was great in the earth and that every intent and the thoughts of his heart were only evil,Alan Kirkpatrick (08:00):Evil, continually. Jeremiah talked to us about the heartAlan Kirkpatrick (08:05):Being desperately wicked, and that there's only one who can know all of the intents of your heart and what's exactly going on inside of you. And that is God alone. And we're told over and over again in the new Testament that we need to seek Christ on the throne of our lives in order for the goodness of God, to flow from us, that when we are left to our own devices, we will always choose wrong overwrite. We will always do injustice rather than justice. It is the nature of our fallenAlan Kirkpatrick (08:40):Full man. In second step,Alan Kirkpatrick (08:42):Samuel chapter 10, the King of the Ammonites had died. And to give you a background about the story in the passage that we're reading, his son, Hannon had ruled in place and David was the King of Israel and he wanted to show kindness to Henan. And so he, he sent delegates to express constellation to the new King over the loss of his father, but who Nan had allowed himself to be convinced by the princes and the advisors that were around him to tell him that David didn't mean good to him. The David wasn't coming to, to, uh, to send this delegation for his good, the David was scouting out to see how he could conquer him or overcome him or to see what great Weldy might have and take it away from him. And when David heard this, um, you know, it troubled him in his heart and, and the, the delegation that he had sent down to Henan was mistreated and, and made fun of and mocked and not allowed a visitation with the King directly.Alan Kirkpatrick (09:49):And as a result of that, this trouble David, and he became very angry that what he meant for good had been treated in an evil way. And as the, as the Ammonites learned that David was angry, they decided to, to get their men together and go to battle against Israel. They thought it's only a matter of time before the self fulfilling prophecy comes to place that they're going to come and try to overcome us. So they send an army in advance and they, they went to their neighbors and they got them to, to gather with them as well, the neighboring countries. And they put together this, this massive army to March against Israel. And as it developed, the Amorites were a raid at the walled city to, um, to, uh, go against Israel. And the Syrians had gathered in the open field and Joe Eben, the Israelites found that they were sandwiched in the middle of God.Alan Kirkpatrick (10:42):Uh, David had sent them out to answer the marching armies and they found themselves sandwiched in the front was this mighty army. And behind them was this mighty army. And we read and talked about it last week. How Jacob commanded his brother to be on one side, to fight the enemy. And he would fight the ones on the front side. And if, if his army, if the armies of the enemy overcame his line, that the, his brother would bring reinforcements to help. And if it happened on the backside, he would be the reinforcements to help. They found themselves sandwich. What do you do when evil is all around you? When, when your, your front is, is at attack and your back is that attack. And we've been living through this many of us through 2020, that the evil of the enemy not personalizing in any personality, but just the work of the enemy in our world has, has come to kill, to steal and to destroy. And we have literally seen the face of evil Joel Eben. His men begin to prepare for battle. One of the things that we learned from watching a, what David instructed and watching the army of Israel was that they had learned something. God taught Israel very early on. And that is that appeasement is never an option when you're faced withAlan Kirkpatrick (12:00):The Bible clearly tells us that evilAlan Kirkpatrick (12:03):Has no intention of making a bargain, a treaty and agreement with you that you must be ready to stand up against evil bursts, decile Indians chapter two verse four says for, we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the good newsAlan Kirkpatrick (12:22):News. Our purposeAlan Kirkpatrick (12:24):As a church is to please God, not people. He alone examines. The motiveAlan Kirkpatrick (12:32):Of our heart. Evil will sound.Alan Kirkpatrick (12:35):I know treaty with us. It will make no agreement with us. And if it did, it would make no difference because it doesn't stand behind any of its agreements. First, John chapter three verse eight says the one who does what is sinful is the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. Don't miss that. The reason the son of God came was destroy the work of the devil against your life. He came, it says in John 10 and 10 to steal, to kill and to destroy. But Jesus said, I came that you might have abundant life. You might have fulfilled life, life to the fool. I've come to destroy, not just put in check, but to destroy the work of the enemy against your life, to redeem you and bring you to myself. And so Joanne, the men of Israel faced evil. Head-on they recognize theirs. We're not going to go out and try to wave a white flag and surrender. It's either we're dying on this field and that was God's design, or they're dying on this field. And that was God's design. There is no way we're trying to make some kind of a covenant or agreement withAlan Kirkpatrick (13:48):It's evil. And so joyAlan Kirkpatrick (13:51):And his armies begin to face him. I'm wondering this morning, how is it that you stand up against evil when, when you are pushed back, do you even recognize evil when you see it? Are you able to recognize evil when you see it? I was struck by reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn's book and Ben rereading recently, and going back through particular sections of the book, and it really amazes me how so many millions were led off as lambs to slaughter in the arrests in the cities, in their homes, in, in restaurants just casually, just walked off and put into prison. And many, many of them died in the Gulag. And it's it. It is fascinating to think. And, and you, you really should be examined. It began to realize that there's, there is a flaw in us as human beings, that we are often unable to see evil when it presents itself, when it comes and just stands in front of us, we're often reasoning that that's not really what it is.Alan Kirkpatrick (15:00):And as he was talking about in the arrest segment, that we think that justice will eventually went out. It seems like it shouldn't be difficult for us to know good from evil, but in reality, almost everyone automatically, you know, we, we know that a it's wrong to kill. We know that it's wrong to torture someone. There are issues that we are pretty concrete on and, and we feel like they're right and they're wrong, but we don't have to look very far in our society to recognize that even among Christians, there are people who believe that it's okay for a woman to have an abortion. And people who believe that, that, uh, that, that, that is wrong. You're, you're killing a life. You're destroying a part. How is it that two people could have so different views on the same kind of a situation you and I are ultimately easily deceived.Alan Kirkpatrick (15:58):And the enemy knows that that's how the enemy succeeds in leading us into sin and, and leading us away from the presence and the power of God. We need the Holy spirit to lead us away from evil and into obedience to God. Jesus said to the disciples, before he ascended, I must go away. There's an emphasis on this urgency of Jesus saying, he's hung out with these guys for three years. They don't want him to go anywhere. They're happy after the resurrection. They're like, all right, man, let's go forward from here. Let's continue this ministry. We're standing with you. You're our leader. Let's go. And Jesus, that, that sense of expediency of him saying, I have to go away, but I'm sending the Holy spirit. And he is going to be not only with you, but in you. And he's going to lead you step by step.Alan Kirkpatrick (16:56):You are going to know as he leads you, right from wrong, good from evil, what your next steps are supposed to be. You're going to see something. So in advance that is wrong. That is evil. That is destructive for you and your family and your nation. That, that the enemy will, will Telegraph it. Uh, we'll be trying to hide it. And, and the Holy spirit will Telegraph it out to you. You will know in advance and you will know how to counter step and to move in that season. In that direction, you must be spirit led. You're not able to stand against the evil on your own. John chapter 14, verse 26, but the helper Jesus said the Holy spirit, whom the father send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to remembrance. All things that I have said to you, and many of you that are here today, or listening online have had that very experience in your walk with the Lord where the Holy spirit is brought back to remembrance to your mind in a particular season, passages of scriptures are true that have been taught to you through the word of God.Alan Kirkpatrick (18:16):That help you make a stand in that moment. In that instant, we desperately need the Holy spirit to lead our lives. And the question then becomes, you know, how can we facilitate the work of the Holy spirit, the leading of the Holy spirit in our lives? How can we make it easy for the Holy spirit to lead us so that we're not deceived and walking around and, and treating evil like it, it actually is good. And then surprised one day that we are under arrest, that we have been taken away captive by the enemy. And the answer is, is that there are two values that are developed in our life through spiritual formation that help more effectively allow us to navigate as people of God and be led by the Holy spirit. There are things that God is teaching you right now through what's called spiritual formation.Alan Kirkpatrick (19:14):Now, how, how is spiritual formation taking place in your life right now is one of them. The teaching of God's word is, is taking rough edges off. It's bringing understanding and truth into your life. There are relationships in your life. Some of them have been callous and difficult and challenging, and some of them have been loving and warm and friendly. And they're all a part of God's spiritual formation in your lives. There have been encounters in your life that you've had like many of the Bible characters that we've read about. You've had a dream. You've had a vision. We have a, uh, a Hannah's here today. She had a, she had a dream. She had a vision that we should make mask as a church. And, and these, the seasons that God brings truths and words into our lives. In, in those manners, you have had experiences in your life.Alan Kirkpatrick (20:06):I remember I had a friend who was going through a real difficult time, and he was looking for one of those object lessons in nature. God does that to us. Sometimes it doesn't need, he gives us, we'll walk outside and, and we'll see the lilies are growing or the flowers, or God's taking care of them. God can take care of me. Right? And so he was out in nature. He was sitting on a park bench, near a little Lake, and he was waiting for God to send him a sign. He was really discouraged and God send me a sign. And suddenly out of this Lake, a turtle crawls up a water turtle, and it starts walking towards the bench where he's at, and he's still amazed. And he says, speak God.Alan Kirkpatrick (20:50):Okay? But there are all kinds of ways that God is speaking to us through friendships and encounters and object lessons. And through his word, as we get into God's word is a primary way that he's constantly speaking to us every single day through his word. Right? And, and it's so important that you and I put that into practice. But as in the process of spiritual formation, there's two things God's trying to do, and you're fighting him on it. That's going to help you be spirit led, all right, stop fighting. Here's the number one, the value of self discipline, the value of self discipline. God has not given you what you want when you want it. And, and he has called you into self discipline in particular areas of your life. And when we respond favorably in the area of self discipline, we grow to better be led by this Holy spirit to be led by God's spirit.Alan Kirkpatrick (21:51):When we allow God and we say, yeah, do that work in me. Cause that's going to make a lot of room for the Holy spirit to do his work inside of me. If I learn about self-discipline, you know, if I can begin to govern myself, look at Proverbs chapter 25, verse 28, whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down without walls. Your, your susceptible to every attack of the enemy. You're a broken down wall city. When you are not practicing self discipline, self disciplined in action is, is us saying there are 14 things I can do with this weekend. I've had an invitation to go do this, to go do that. I've had a desire to go do this, to go do that. I am disciplining myself to bring my family to God's house, to worship and put him first self-discipline is, you know, my coworkers want me to go out after and, and, and celebrate. Somebody's a new home that they bought. And we're going to go to a place that wouldn't make everybody in my family happy, including my wife. And as a result of that,Speaker 3 (23:12):Uh, I'm going toAlan Kirkpatrick (23:13):Say, I'll check out. I'm not going to go guys, if you, if you change and you decide to go somewhere else, that that isn't a place that would displeasing to my wife, to me, to my God. Then I will go with you. Self-discipline enacted in, in our lives on a daily basis, makes it easy for the Holy spirit. Then to lead us in our next steps, we have a wall up against the attacks of the enemy, and we're listening to the Holy spirit. We're being led moment by moment, day by day by the Holy spirit. And so when the enemy comes in to arrest us, we are ready. We're Watchman on the wall. We know he's coming. We've seen him a mile off, and we know what God wants us to do in that instant. The Holy spirit speaks to us. Take no thought what you should say in that hour, but the Holy spirit will give it to you.Alan Kirkpatrick (24:12):Jesus told his disciples on one occasion, Paul and Silas, as captives in jail, they hadn't learned to, to prepare themselves and make room for the leading of the Holy spirit. And they, the Holy spirit prompted them to sing worship songs and they began to sing worship songs. Can you imagine coming out of the jail cell, uh, the songs of worship and God shook the place and opened up every one of those gels cells and they were allowed to walk out and to begin again in preaching the gospel, there is no jail cell that can hold them. I was, I was struck by what John MacArthur was saying. Uh, as the city kept challenging their church in California, and we're going to shut you down and we're going to put you in jail for six months. He says, I've followed God in a lot of ways.Alan Kirkpatrick (25:05):And my favorite, one of my favorite, uh, old tests, or one of my favorite characters in the Bible is Paul. And he said, you know, um, I've I've, he was put in jail. His whole life was, you know, when he went into a city, he didn't ask, you know, what's the best accommodations you have here. He would ask what the jail cell was like. Cause he knew that's where he was going to go. And he was going to spend time because they had threatened to arrest him said, come and get me. I've never had a prison ministry or a jail ministry. I'll start one. All right, that's being led of the spirit and knowing that the things that are coming towards you, God has remedy for them and God's going to lead you through them. And God's going to direct you. The second value. That's so important for making room to be spirit led and courageous living is that, that of the value of deferred gratification, Psalms chapter 27 verse 14 says, wait for the Lord, be strong and let your heart take courage.Alan Kirkpatrick (26:02):Wait. But the Lord part of self discipline is also enacting that value of self gratification that we always want. We want something, we have money in the bank. We have the ability to go do that. We just go get it. And it's, it's delaying that gratification. It's waiting until God provides the moment, the opportunity and the time. Because when we get engaged in things in instant gratification, we get drawn a way by our lost our own desires, our own passions. We get stuck the way from the things that God has actually caused us to, to focus on from being focused and, and transforming the world that God has placed us in. We are suddenly out of business. There's an out of business sign hanging where, where we should be in business, doing mission, work kingdom, work for the Lord or engaging our families. We're too busy. We wanted to go out. We just needed some time off. We needed a break we needed to get away. It's just been all too hard. It's been too tough. So we put this on the credit card and we decided we were just going to go do X, Y, or Z.Alan Kirkpatrick (27:16):John Maxwell said it this way you can play now and pay later, or you can pay now and play later. It's understanding the significance of deferred gratification in every area of our life. You don't have to have it right now and you don't get to take it with you afterwards. Right? Deferred gratification is, is making room in our hearts for the courageous living that the Holy spirit will direct us in for God saying, you know, I don't have to meet all of these wants in my life. God's taking care of my needs. And often God just surprises me and gives me a want, even though it's not something that's needed in my life, I'm blessed to follow his leading. And I want to defer gratification in line with waiting on the Lord to do the work that he does. A believer who is not actively involved in resisting evil and obviously seeking to do good is not being led of the spirit.Alan Kirkpatrick (28:29):No matter how much they think they might be surrendered to the lore. The faithful believer is not an observer, but a good soldier of Christ. Jesus, who is engaged in active service for the Lord. The success of my calling and your calling is in knowing good from evil. God told the prophet Amos that I'm going to set you out at the Gates. And as people come in, I want you to establish justice. The you call out evil. You call out what is good. It is the job and the role of the church to call out what is good and what is evil. We don't have to be standing necessarily on the corner of some street with a megaphone screaming at people you're at appropriately dressed. You're doing drugs,Alan Kirkpatrick (29:24):But how do we establish justice in the Gates? We're raising families who cherish and love God. We're living. By example, we took the extra $10 that HEB gave us in change. Uh, inadvertently, we took it back and gave it to the checker who check this out. We're establishing justice in the Gates. We see someone that's hurting. That's wounded that needs help. We go and give them a helping hand. We direct them to where they can get permanent help, not just today's food, but through Jesus Christ, your life can be transformed. We're establishing justice in the Gates. We're showing people what is good and what is evil. And the same time walking in humility saying, don't follow me when I stray, keep following Jesus. But as long as I'm following Jesus, follow me because I'm going to just take it to him. I'm going to take you into his presence and show you who can make a difference. Paul exhorted, every believer in second, Timothy chapter two, verse 23 through 26 of Boyd, foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife and a servant of the Lord must not whirl, but be gentle to all able to teach patient in humility, correcting those who are in opposition. If God perhaps will grant them repentance so that they may know the truth and that they may, and let's read this together. This last line, come to their senses and escape. The snare of the devil having been taken captive by him to do as well.Alan Kirkpatrick (31:16):It crushes us. Doesn't it to think that we had been taken captive by the enemy to do his will. One of the thing Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn story points out to us is people have been taken by the enemy and they're doing his will. They're not doing what they think is the right thing. They are doing. What? The one who is influencing them, who is directing them. And listen to me, people, not everyone is a Satanist worshiper. They're not obviously going out to, to, to a, uh, a Satan synagogue to worship the devil, right? But if they're not worshiping God, they're influenced by the enemy. He is the one that is giving them thought direction, uh, encouragement along particular lines. There is no justice in this world, but the justice that comes from God, there is no goodness in this world, but the goodness that comes from God and blows through the life of those who are sold out and committed to relationship with him,Alan Kirkpatrick (32:31):We cannotAlan Kirkpatrick (32:32):Stand against evil in our world without the Holy spirit,Alan Kirkpatrick (32:38):Without the Holy, we are often, uh, not even able to recognize what is good and what is evil. And we're engaged sometimes in the process of culture and community calling evil good and not even recognizing the difference. God says you got to make room or two, two values that I'm trying to form it. You that are, that are going to make it easier for the Holy spirit to work, teach self-discipline raise up the walls. You want to hear one voice. It is my voice speaking into your life so that you're crystal clear on how to move forward.Alan Kirkpatrick (33:18):Stop trying to build your own work, delay gratification, and allow me to do what I need to do. You're not ready for what you think you're ready for. You're not ready to engage in, in some areas that you think you're ready to engage in. Without the Holy spirit, we can't tell good from evil, even in the life of the disciples, walking with Jesus, we can see this over and over again. We can see them resisting on one occasion, a group of people who they come back and tell Jesus, they were casting out, you know, a devil's in your name, but they weren't with us. So we rebuked him. Aren't you proud of us? You know, we tore down their tent and we said, no more meetings over here. Cause there's just one group of disciples. It's us. We see it over and over again. We see, uh, at the, at the table at the end of, of, uh, you know, the, the Lord's supper, Jesus telling Judas, one of the 12, go do what you have to do.Alan Kirkpatrick (34:35):Crushes you, man. Some of you are parents. Who've been betrayed in your own household, by your children who against the things that you have taught and valued and lib have, have rejected them, turn their back on him and walked away. You need the Holy spirit to lead your life. Every moment we always make the wrong choice, bad decisions, misjudge evil for good, good for evil. We always do it. When the Holy spirit is not directing our lives, we can be so easily deceived. Hebrews chapter five, verse 13 and 14 for everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness or he is a babe, but solid food belongs to those who are of full age. That is those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil in the process of spiritual formation. The Holy spirit is working you out, running you, challenging you breathing life into you, instructing you, correcting you and you're making mistakes and I'm making mistakes. We're making mistakes as followers of Christ. And he course corrects us and shows us where that was wrong and brings us back to a place of repentance to our brothers and sisters that we may have offended. And to the Lord are who we are following in our lives that we've surrendered to him. And he's helping us understand in that process. This is good. This is evil. This is good. And this is evil. What do you do? How do you stand against evil?Alan Kirkpatrick (36:39):God is challenging us to allow spiritual formation, to make room for those values in our life to discipline ourself self-discipline and to delay gratification and to say, I choose what you want for my life over what I want for my life. He closes that passage out by saying solid food belongs to those who are of full age. What's he talking about maturity? You can tell, you can tell that I believe this Dennis Prager had a, had a video out that, you know, I knew this too. He said at six years old, I knew that man was not basically good he's Jewish. And he said, the reason I knew man was not basically good is because I read the book. Genesis X is a little bit it's like even the best of them were sorry. Examples of goodness. Right? They all had failures. So he said, I know it wasn't intrinsically a part of humanity that they were good.Alan Kirkpatrick (37:43):Right? He said, I knew they needed a good God. And that's, that's so huge for us to, to understand it. And it's a part of our maturing in the Lord. When you have matured in the Lord, you understand that society is not looking out for your best government. Isn't looking out for your best. Humanity is not looking out for your best interest globalism. Isn't looking out for your best. Who's looking out for your best interests. God alone. Yes. He's the good God who has good plans for you. But you're in a world, surrounded by people who are allowing evil to lead their lives. So what will you do at the, at the end, after we'veAlan Kirkpatrick (38:36):Had the worship team come back and we're spending a time in prayer, Michelle's gonna come up and talk to you a little bit about a class that we're starting next Sunday at 6:00 PM. And you can get online and participate in that class. Uh, we'll have a Google hangout set up for you. And the class is just simply titled stand up for Jesus. How do you make a stand and evil times? We need to get ready. We're already seeing some forms of persecution in America. Nothing like other countries have seen, but we need to be ready to stand. One of the things that I was talking to another pastor, uh, in the parking lot this week, and you know, he said, one of the things that that seems to be happening across America is the church is being revealed. The real church is being revealed. There's a lot of consumer Christianity that's been going on and people are going where it's been comfortable and nobody really challenges their belief systems, their, their social media postings or anything else.Alan Kirkpatrick (39:37):And, and so they've just been gravitating and moving along thinking, uh, yeah, God will accept this and God will accept that. And God will accept something else. But missionaries that would tell us that one of the challenges about going to particular places overseas was that they wanted to, to add Jesus. They love Jesus. You know, when he talked about how great Jesus would, they were like, Oh, that's great. We need Jesus too. Let's put him up here with Buddha. Let's put him up here with, you know, a Muhammad let's put him up here with, he can just be one of the gods that we will. They're like, no, no, he has to be theAlan Kirkpatrick (40:09):That's it,Alan Kirkpatrick (40:11):He will not share the throne. And it was, they said there was challenging breast to be able to tell people, you know, you have to tear these things down in your life. You have to get rid of them. He is only God alone.Alan Kirkpatrick (40:25):Yeah. All by himself, solid foodAlan Kirkpatrick (40:29):Belong to those who are full age by the worship team to come back. Grownups grownups areAlan Kirkpatrick (40:38):Led by the spirit andAlan Kirkpatrick (40:41):Filled with God's word led by the spirit and filled with God's word. We see the perfect example of what that was all about in the life of Jesus before he started this ministry, you remember he's he's baptized. And then it says he was led of the spirit where out into the wilderness and in the wilderness, he begins to be tempted. And the spirit is showing him the word of God, right? Because the temptations come and, and, and the enemy would, would say, you know, uh, it says in the Bible that if you I'll take you up to this high pinnacle, and you know, if you cast yourself down, it says the angels will protect you and watch over you. This is the habit that you didn't read. The whole counsel, the book, it says, don't tempt the Lord, your God, this has been out here for 40 days.Alan Kirkpatrick (41:37):You're hungry. Um, why don't you just turn these breads into stone? And, uh, you know, I'll go the grocery store and get a little butter and men I'm telling you what, we will have a feast, you know? And, and we can, we can sit here and eat, go ahead. You know, you're, you're hungry. This thing's all over now. Uh, just go ahead and turn those stones into bread. And man, we will have a feast. Okay. I'll sit here with you. We'll just have a good time. And he said, you didn't read the whole counsel of the book is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God, I'm going to delay, gratifying myself with food. And I'm going to listen to the voice of God and follow his leading. He led me into the wilderness and he can lead me out of the wilderness. Amen, man.

Grappling with God A sermon preached by Rev. Ginger E. Gaines-Cirelli for Foundry UMC August 9, 2020, tenth Sunday after Pentecost. “Close Encounters with the Living God” series. Text: Genesis 32:22-31 It’s a scene tailor-made for a movie script or a budding psychoanalyst’s dissertation. The archetypes are stacked one upon another—estranged twin brothers who have different ways of being in the world; a shadowy antagonist; a struggle alongside a river crossing with foreboding heavy on both sides; the thin place that exists in the hours just as day is breaking. Jacob is at the center of this scene. Over the centuries, he’s become a kind of stock character, a trickster, a hustler—his name is translated “he supplants” or “heel”—for he was born holding the heel of his twin brother Esau. From the beginning of his life he’s engaged in one kind of struggle after another, working angles, trying to get ahead. And he always seems to come out smelling like a rose, always one step ahead of danger. But on this night, Jacob knows that his life may have finally caught up in a way that could be the death of him. You see, at God’s leading (Gen 31:3), after around 20 years away, Jacob is heading back home after some trouble with his father in law. His brother Esau, still living in their hometown, vowed to kill Jacob back in the day for taking his birthright and his blessing. Jacob sends word to his brother that he’s coming, that he’s done alright for himself, and hopes that they can, you know, make up (Gen 32:3-5). The response is swift: Esau is on the march to meet Jacob with four hundred men. Cue the ominous orchestral theme… Jacob does several things at this point. He prays to God, humbly but directly—“I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown” (32:10)—“I am afraid of him…” (and then, in case God forgot) “Yet you have said ‘I will surely do you good…’” (32:11-12) He sends gifts ahead to try to appease his brother. And he sends his wives and children ahead of him as well, never knowing if he’ll see any of them again. Jacob has done everything he can, worked the only angles he’s got, he’s prayed, he’s planned, he’s gifted. And now he is alone. Imagine Jacob, afraid and knowing he may die, reflecting upon his life… The way he came into the world holding on to his brother. The way that relationship got twisted—in part through the actions of their parents. How Jacob developed his own strengths of quick wit and cleverness, so different from his brother’s strength in the hunt and the fields. How he had gone through an elaborate ruse to try to be like his brother so that he might receive blessing from his father. How, in the process, he hurt his brother and humiliated his father and was forced to leave home and his mother’s fierce love and protection. I imagine Jacob remembering all the highs and lows of love and marriage, the complications with Leah and Rachel, and with his father in law, Laban. He might also have played back the dreams and visions he’d been given, images of his children’s faces, the beauty and bounty he’d experienced…as well as all he’d said and done that was unkind, unjust, deceitful and hurtful. I imagine Jacob looking back over his life with gratitude and regret and guilt and fear and hope all tumbling over his mind like a creek flowing over rocks. And when night fell the wrestling began… Can you relate? Ever found yourself awake in the wee hours of night in a kind of wrestling match in your mind and heart? Your story won’t include the details of Jacob’s life. But who among us doesn’t grapple with fear? Who among us doesn’t carry things from childhood forward that we are bound to run into on our life’s journey? Who among us is without the marks of our parental or sibling relationships on our psyches? We have all made decisions that led us down one path or another, sometimes into danger and regret and other times into freedom and joy. There are different energies within us, like twins who have different gifts and strengths, all deserving nurture and love—but often it’s difficult to honor it all and hold these energies together with any sense of wholeness. What have you done in order to try to get love? What have you sacrificed in order to try to earn the blessing you crave? Who have you been willing to hurt in order to gain wealth or comfort or pleasure? What losses have you suffered that are yet uncared for, what wounds are untended? What are you proud of in your life and what would you give anything to do over?... When we are alone, when it is clear we are vulnerable, that things are going to be different one way or another, that we must confront the reality of our life—all our history, our personality, our gifts, our mistakes, our strengths, our woundedness, all our complications—in those moments, there is struggle. There is wrestling. That’s what happened with Jacob. Is he fighting with himself (like Luke Skywalker in the cave)? Is it a demon? An angel? Is it God? The struggle is intense and it leaves Jacob limping. But he holds on. He holds on even when the man tells him to let go. He holds on even when he doesn’t have a clue who he’s wrestling. He holds on when it seems it would have been a big relief to let the mystery assailant go on his merry way. But Jacob would not let go. And it is here that the story turns. You can characterize Jacob in all sorts of ways. But the thing that seems consistent throughout his story is that he is determined to fight for the life he longs for. And he’s not afraid to ask for the blessing that he needs. “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The response to Jacob is simple: “What is your name?” All Jacob has is the name he was given, “Jacob”—the supplanter, the usurper, the “heel.” In speaking his name, Jacob makes a kind of confession, an admission of the mix and mess and striving of his life. Here I am, alone—no “Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.” Just Jacob. And this one with whom Jacob has been wrestling has something to say to that. “That name, that narrative, is not all of who you are. All the striving of your life—the struggle with humans, with yourself, and with me has led you to this moment. And when you cross the river, when you pass into this new day dawning, when you leave this place walking differently as a result of your hip, I will call you Israel.” Jacob asks the man’s name. And the implication is beginning to get clear—this is God! And God asks, “Do you really need to ask my name?” There God blessed Jacob/Israel. I wonder whether the whole encounter was the blessing, this close encounter with the living God… What does Jacob’s grappling with self, others, and God teach us about our own? If Jacob’s story is any indication, we learn that the whole of our lives is held in God—the painful bits and the joyful surprises and the tensions and the triumphs. God is always at work for good—not just in the world around us, but in our world. Paul writes, “all things work together for good for those who love God who are called according to God’s purpose.” (Romans 8:28) Lately, this verse has made more and more sense to me. It isn’t that God causes everything that happens to you, but that God is with you in all of it and desires nothing more than to help you come through, to survive, stronger, wiser, with more compassion and love. Jacob’s story reminds us that God knows all of you, so you might as well be honest. God knows you better than you know yourself—knows not only what you’ve done, but why. God knows everything you’ve experienced, suffered, offered, achieved, everything you’ve sacrificed, everything you’ve dreamed, how hard you try and how much you’re carrying. God knows what you’ve done that was harmful or hurtful. God knows it all. If you read the whole of Jacob’s story, you’ll see how God just keeps showing up even when we might think Jacob doesn’t deserve it. Morning by morning, new mercies are received…over and over. I am increasingly convinced that the most difficult thing for many of us to grapple with is God’s mercy. To acknowledge who you are—all of it—and then to receive God’s mercy is a deeply humbling, awe-full experience because you know you didn’t earn it, but that somehow God believes you’re worthy. Receiving God’s mercy is a blessing that, if fully received, changes us because we begin to recognize the depth of God’s love and the stubbornness of God who is determined to get it through our thick heads that we’re more than the worst thing we’ve done, that we’re more than the self-limiting names that we or others assign to us. We struggle to believe that God cares so much, that God loves us and wants to bless us. Jacob is a champion of demanding the blessing which God always wants to give. Many among us are metaphorically at the ford of the Jabbok river right now. Some are facing difficult decisions, perhaps feeling stranded and afraid, uncertain about the future or how to proceed, having worked every angle and done everything you know how to do. Many among us are weary and worn down with grief and rage and loneliness and stress. Some among us are paralyzed with guilt and regret, a sense of unworthiness or emptiness. Others are trying to discern how to step into life as it continues to shift and change all around us, how to adapt and find ways to thrive and to serve and to grow. As a nation we are standing at the river being asked who we are, being asked to tell the truth about our whitewashed history, being asked if we’re willing to hold on even though it’s painful to acknowledge our nation’s sins, being asked whether we’re willing to meet as siblings and write a new narrative of true liberty and justice for all, whether we’re willing to be substantively changed so that we move together in a new way. And when we find ourselves at this point, when things get really difficult, when we feel most vulnerable, weary, guilty, wounded, uncertain, angry, and afraid, knowing that things in our lives need to change, the temptation is to just give in—to shut down or let go of our faith, our hope, our love. At this point God always shows up and takes hold of us—sometimes as a parent tenderly holds a child and sometimes like a mysterious wrestling partner. In any case, like Jacob, our part is to hold on, to persevere, to not let go before we step into the new day dawning. As we hold on to God, trusting God to hold on to us as we step up to face what is before us, we eventually learn to let go of our idols of self-sufficiency, control and comfort, to let go of the names and narratives that hold us back from life God knows is ours to live, to let go of our deepest fears and self-loathing. As we hold on to God, Jacob teaches us not only to expect but to ask for God’s blessing. That blessing may not be what you imagine, but it will be life for you. Because it will always be some form of God’s tender mercy and liberating love. And that’s something you won’t want to let go—even if you could. https://foundryumc.org/
## Introduction So in our studies so far this year, we have tried to re-enforce our theme, “Change What You Love.” We began with wisdom literature in our study of Ecclesiastes. We did two topical summer series, Love the Commandment and Love the Church. And now we are going to end the year with a narrative. Today we begin a 16-week series on the life of Joseph that will take us to Christmas. In our study of Joseph, we see in narrative fashion how love changes. We see the bad love behind jealousy, rage, condescension, lust, power, self-pity, and self-loathing transformed into good love resulting in forgiveness, compassion, self-sacrifice, and worship. We see a man remarkably mature from a 17-year-old soft and immature boy to a 110-year-old sage in such a way that the young Joseph would not recognize his future elderly self if he had met him. God uses failure/success, mistreatment/promotion, suffering/fame to shape the affections of Joseph into a God-loving, enemy-forgiving, leader and savior of a nation. This is a drama that, if you let it, will change your life. Background So let’s dive into this fascinating story. The story of Joseph begins in chapter 37 of the book of Genesis. And one of the things that might be obvious but worth saying is that the author of the book of Genesis would have expected you to have read the 36 chapters leading up to this story. They are connected and there is a larger story that is being told. So I want to spend just a moment understanding where this fits into the book. I’m not doing the obligatory background step here. This is absolutely essential to understanding the narrative. So if you focus, I’ll move efficiently. Deal? Genesis literally means beginnings. And in the beginning, everything is good. It begins with God’s very good animals, living on his very good land, filled with his very good birds. The creation story climaxes with the creation of Adam and Eve, two very good beings specially made in the image of God. Over and over we read that everything is good. And of course, the reason it is all so good is because God is good. This entire good created order is shattered when the goodness of God and his good creation is called into question. God says don’t eat of this tree in the middle of the garden. And he only gives them a one-sentence reason, because if you eat it you will die. Because I am good, you can trust me that this is true. But then they ask this damning question, “How can God know what’s good for me?” I’m the only one who can know that. And so they become the judge of what is good and eat the forbidden fruit. And rejecting God’s good always means choosing a world without good. The poison of sin begins to leech into every aspect of life. If you cut a flower from a vine, it doesn’t wilt instantly. In fact, it looks great but slowly, because it is cut off from the source of life, it dies. And the first 11 chapters of the book of Genesis describe the horrible wilting effects of sin. And everywhere we look in these first 11 chapters, instead of good, we see evil. The ground is cursed. Cain becomes jealous of his brother and kills Abel. God looks down on the world he created his summary was, Genesis 6:5, “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” God destroys the world in a flood. The Tower of Babel describes the pride of men and people’s evil desire to become like God. And so the first 11 chapters set up the problem. The absence of good has created this space for evil to invade. And it’s painful. The next rest of the book begins to suggest a solution. God appears to a man Abraham and says out of you shall all of the nations of the earth be blessed. He makes a promise to him. The rest of Genesis, chapters 12-50, trace a promise of God through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph to restore good. Over and over again, God makes good promises to evil men. God is faithful while man is faithless. A faithful God revealing himself to faithless men. Now, this is an important point because by the time we get to the New Testament the patriarchs have been immortalized into history as the founding fathers of the Jewish faith and are held in high honor. The Pharisees were proud to say, “We are children of Abraham.” It’s a badge of honor to associate yourself with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But if you read the story of the actual patriarchs as described in the actual narrative, they are a bunch of losers. These guys are a bunch of chauvinistic, cowardly men who use their wives as shields to protect themselves from danger. They are faithless bufoons who revert to paganism, superstition, and generally are an embarrassment to the Christian faith. Now I want to say something here. The point of Genesis is to establish exactly that fact! The goal is to point to God’s faithfulness despite the faithlessness of his chosen people. Maybe the best way to point this out is to illustrate an interpretive problem we’ve likely all had. When you read the book of Genesis there are some embarrassing chapters. After the flood, we read of Noah getting drunk in a tent and involved in some sort of super awkward, lewd behavior. I’m not sure you’ll find an episode of Veggie Tales on that story? And there is no commentary. You just read that and get uncomfortable and move along. You have the rape of Dinah in chapter 34, where Jacob’s daughter Dinah is raped and then the 11 brothers of Jacob go out and murder in cold-blooded circumcision trickery the entire tribe that raped her. And again, there is no commentary. You are thinking, “Is that what God wanted?” I mean, you can search high and low and you are not going to find a Sunday School flannel graph to go along with some of these stories. In chapter 38, you have this story of Judah who thinks he sleeping with a temple prostitute but is really being tricked by his daughter-in-law Tamar who was widowed. And she’s doing that because Judah forced her to remain a widow. I mean, awkward. The whole time, we are wanting God to provide some commentary. Why are you including this stuff in the Bible? This is really messing up my family devotions with my 7-year-old. I’ve heard people say, “I could never worship a God who condones the polygamous marriages we read about in the heroes of the Christian faith. I mean look at Abraham. Look at Isaac. Really? This is the model of how God wants his people to be?” All of this illustrates a profound misunderstanding of the point of Genesis. Your intuitions are absolutely correct. These guys are a bunch of losers. But look at what God can do despite losers. This is why it is so important to see the book as a whole because commentary does come at the end. The whole book is highlighting the failure of men. Adam fails, Cain fails, Noah fails, Abraham fails, Isaac fails, and Jacob fails. They all failed. These men were polygamous, jealous, petty, greedy, and in almost every way, faithless. And then you have God who just intervenes and delivers. That’s how you are supposed to read the book. Now to be sure, you don’t get this until the very end of the book. That’s when it all connects. It all clicks. Have you ever watched a movie where you have no idea how you are supposed to interpret anything until the very end and then great reveal happens and it all makes sense? That’s how the book of Genesis is structured. And that great reveal, this interpretive key comes at the very end of the book, at the climax of both the Joseph narrative and the book of Genesis as a whole. We get this powerful statement, “You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.” That’s the commentary on the book of Genesis we were looking for? What does God think of all this crazy narrative? They are wilting flowers cut off from the source of life! Without the life-good they can only do evil. They were evil and did evil. But God is greater than their evil. They meant it for evil but God is good and therefore can redeem it. Joseph So, as we open up chapter 37 and look at the story of Joseph, let’s remind ourselves that we are in a narrative of brokenness where evil is very much afoot. In Joseph’s case, this brokenness was most keenly felt in his own family. Genesis 37 begins. Now let’s talk about Joseph’s family. Most of us come from a home where we have an imperfect father and an imperfect mother. Joseph came from a home where he had an imperfect father and four imperfect mothers, technically two wives and two surrogate mothers. Joseph’s father was married to two wives, Rachael and Leah, who also happened to be sisters. How Jacob came to be married to Rachel and Leah is a story unto itself filled with deception and trickery and doesn’t exactly paint the great patriarchs in very flattering light. You will remember that Rachael and Leah are sisters who are bitter rivals. Rachel is beautiful, bright-eyed, is loved by her husband. Leah is not as beautiful, dull-eyed, and is not loved by her husband. You might think Leah doomed in this marriage save one factor. Rachel can’t get pregnant; Leah on the other hand, if Jacob just winks at her from across the room is instantly three months pregnant. Now in our culture, sadly, having children is not valued very highly. However, in the ancient near east, nothing is more important than bearing children and in particular, male children. Male children carry on the family name and strengthen a tribe. Having male children is like hitting a grand slam in baseball. It’s like draining that eagle in golf. I mean these are things you keep track of on a scorecard. And Rachael and Leah are keeping score. And in chapter 29:32 you have that scorecard. Chapter 29 is the chronicles of the labor and delivery ward of Jacob’s tribe. And chapter 29 begins with Leah giving birth to all these children. And she’s giving birth to them at this astounding rate of one verse at a time. In verse 32 that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son—she called him Reuben; verse 33, she conceived again and gave birth to a son, called him Simeon; verse 34, she conceived and gave birth to a son and called him Levi; and verse 35, she conceived again and gave birth to a son and she called him Judah. And then the narrative pauses. 29: “Then she stopped having children.” So far the score is Leah four, Rachel zero. The story continues in chapter 20. Rachel, when she saw she was not bearing Jacob any children, became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die.” Jacob says, “What’s your problem woman? I’m not God. I can’t control this stuff. That’s God’s business.” And so Rachel did what was customary at the time: she took the servant maid Bilhah that she had been given and she gave her to Jacob as a surrogate wife. Rachel was thinking, “Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and that through her I too can build a family.” Any children born through the servant maid would be credited as children of Rachel. And so Bilhah gets pregnant, Bilhah gives birth to Dan in verse 6, and to Naphtali in verse 7. So now the score is Leah four, Rachel two with an asterisk. Now the jealousy and fighting and resentment and envy between the sister builds. Leah’s childbearing ability stalls out and so she decides on the same strategy with her maidservant, Zilpah. And Zilpah and Jacob get together, and Zilpah in turn gives birth to Gad in verse 10, and then to Asher in verse 13. And then you have this unbelievable thing here where they’re trading sexual favors for mandrake crops. Mandrakes are a vegetable from the nightshade family that were believed to be aphrodisiacs. Rachael says, “I want some of your son’s mandrakes,” presumably so that she can get pregnant. Apparently, they worked for Leah and so Rachel wants some. Leah says, “No way. You took away my husband. I’m not helping you.” Rachel said, “I’ll let you sleep with him tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.” So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” What in the world? Don’t look at me like I’m being inappropriate. I’m just reading the Bible here folks. So with that, Leah becomes pregnant, she bore Jacob a fifth son. So she named him Issachar. And then she conceived again, and she bore him a sixth son, Zebulun. And then she pops out a daughter named Dinah. Can you believe this? I mean, this is like a rabbit factory. We got kids all over the place. So here’s the score at the top of the ninth inning. We got six boys and a daughter straight up by Leah; two by her servant maid, so that’s nine; two by the other servant maid—that’s eleven. So we got ten boys, one girl, one dad, four mothers, two of them concubines. You think you’ve got a complicated family? The family contained all the ingredients for a psychological nightmare. Why do we mention this? You need to remember something very important. Even though there are 11 children running around, Rachel has never born Jacob a son. She still has not had a son of her own. For all these years, she has been sterile. Rachel is loved but can’t produce any children to be loved. Consequently, she is steaming and raging with jealousy over her sister. She desperately wants a son. It would validate her womanhood. It would bring her honor. It would strengthen the tribe. She envisions that if only I could have a son, my husband’s love would be complete and my value would be established. And finally, one day it happens. Rachel, the very loved wife, gets pregnant and produces a very, very loved child. Joseph. Joseph was literally the fulfillment of a dream for Rachel. Her whole entire life since she was a little girl, she was told that her purpose in life was to bear children for the tribe. She wanted so badly to have a child. And now finally, here he was. This is a dream come true. How do you handle a gold medal? How do you handle a trophy? What do you do with your most precious possessions? So the narrative begins. Now notice, Leah is not mentioned even though she bore most of the children. Why mention Bilhah and Zilpah? That detail is there to remind us of the family tension. Joseph is living as a privileged son of the favored wife among the riff-raff offspring of concubines. He was the full-blooded favorite. That’s bad. But, the tension on that family spring is just beginning to wind. Now a ton of ink has been spilled on this verse. Was Joseph: an innocent young boy simply telling the truth about his evil, older brothers and unjustly hated, OR was he a spoiled brat ratting on his older brothers and getting what was coming to him? Like most things, the truth is probably in the middle. Certainly, there must have been elements where Joseph took advantage of his privileged position. The brilliant Jewish commentator Leon Kass (professor emeritus on the Committee of Social Thought at the University of Chicago, and chairman of the Presidential Council on Bioethics from 2001–2005), suggests that Genesis 37:2 be translated: “Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding his brothers among the flock.” So if this is correct, it would be a play on words. The older brothers are shepherding the sheep while the younger brother is shepherding the shepherds. Joseph was his father’s pet and his reports were designed to keep it that way. Do you really think that basking in the favoritism of his father, Joseph was able to resist all negative effects? Certainly, he developed in overconfidence and bit of self-righteousness tinged with arrogance. Lest you get too judgmental, let’s remember that we all do this. Let me ask you to recall everything you said about other people this week. You probably spoke to other people about your mother, your brother, your kids, your friends, your enemies, those you are jealous of, those you have a hard time with. So recall those conversations where you reported on the behavior of others. Now let me ask you, was it completely correct? So often we leave out slight details or embellish small bits to give a bad report. Joseph was a junior in high school. I don’t think he’s free of these temptations. That being said, some scholars insist that the story of Joseph as a whole gives no evidence that he had such a character flaw. It certainly betrays character flaws in his brothers. The way they respond to Joseph’s report demonstrates that Joseph’s reports may well have been accurate. It also appears that Jacob could trust Joseph but not them. I’m sure there are elements of truth in both of these perspectives. The virtues and vices of Joseph’s intentions are unclear, but how Jacob treats Joseph is perfectly clear. Now you have to understand how significant this would have been. This would be like making all the older kids ride bikes and giving the youngest baby of the family a Tesla. I mean the degree of favoritism here is embarrassing. The literal reading here is a coat to the hands meaning a long-sleeved coat. Most clothing of this era were tunics without sleeves. The idea of a “coat of many colors” comes from the older Septuagint which says, “many-colored coat.” It very likely could be both. Multicolored, long-sleeved coats were common among royalty. The short-sleeved versions have been depicted in many Egyptian papyri. In a world in which material is costly and color is very scarce, this would have been very extravagant and symbolic of high favor and prestige. Now, this isn’t just a nice gift. This is way more than getting a Nike sweater. Do you know what’s at stake with the coat? You have to understand. Almost certainly what is at stake is the first-born blessing. Even though it’s not stated explicitly, the brothers are stewing with jealousy because they can see the writing on the wall. The blessing always came at the end of life but they could see it plain enough. Their inheritance is getting stripped away by dad’s little pet. Now we look at this favoritism and it’s appalling to us. But remember, this was the son of his old age. This last one would come first. After all, he, too, was the last one who became first (25:23). So why did Joseph’s brothers hate him? So far we are told at least four reasons: He was born of the most loved wife. Whether it was for this reason or other reasons, the text straight up says, he was more loved than they were. He was given a special coat indicating that their inheritance and blessing was being stripped away. He was a snitch. Now if that wasn’t enough, we get a fifth reason. Now the dream needs no interpretation here. This isn’t like the dream of Nebuchadnezzar or even like the dream of Pharaoh later in the story where you have cryptic elements and strange symbols. The dream is so obvious in its interpretation and so crude that it flat out just feels like the made-up delusions of a narcissistic teen. It’s just arrogance in dream form. It’s not like it’s really even artful or poetic. It’s just crude, cave-man poetry. Me big and powerful thing. You weak and tiny thing. You bow to me. Haha. The brothers needed no interpretation. The Hebrew uses a grammatical construction here, the infinitive absolute, that conveys utter surprise that he would dare utter such a thing. Now, if that wasn’t enough, the audacity of it all continues. Maybe you are one of the brothers and you start cooling down and dismissing this as the looniness of immaturity and you are trying to give your brother the benefit of the doubt. But then this happens. Eleven stars huh? Okay, that’s it. This dream is so pretentious, so bald-faced and unapologetic. I have so much gravitational awesomeness that I’m like this supernova in the center of the galaxy and the entire solar system revolves around me. All you 11 weaklings will be captured by my gravitational awesomeness. Even mom and dad will be captured by my awesomeness. I am so awesome… Now the fact that this was universally nauseating to the family is evidenced by verse 10. Even dad, who favored him so highly that he gave him the Tesla, can’t stomach the attitude. Now I want to end on the question that Jacob asks Joseph, “What is this dream you have dreamed?” The story of Joseph begins with a dream. Let’s think for a moment about dreams. Dreams are, as yet, unmaterialized conceptions of how the world could be or might be. We dream of all sorts of things. We make little distinction between whether it happened while sleeping or awake. A kid might dream of becoming an astronaut, or dream of winning the lottery, or dream of getting married. Most dreams are simply dreams. They are impossible hopes. The most unlikely of all possible outcomes. Most dreams are statistical impossibilities. I dream of taking over Amazon or Google. I mean what are the chances? Joseph here has a dream that implies that he will be ruler of all men. That’s a crazy dream, especially given his position. As a kid, you may have dreamed that you would become president of the United States. And it’s likely that your parents deflated your sails in short order. They said, listen, the chances of that are so low. Maybe try being a carpenter. Jesus was a carpenter. This is kind of what Jacob seems to do with Joseph. Joseph, listen, you aren’t going to rule over us. That’s impossible. I want you to think just how impossible this dream really is. Suppose you were an Iranian shepherd captured in battle by the US Forces and detained as a prisoner of war and in Guantanamo Bay. What are your chances of being president of the United States as an uneducated, Iranian POW? I mean you have a greater chance of being struck by lighting 500 times in a row than that dream coming true. Now let me ask you this, "What is the difference between a pipe dream and prophetic dream? The difference is not in the odds. The difference is in the divine power to turn it into reality. God was hidden in Joseph’s dream. When God is at work, nothing can stop it, even when everyone wants it stopped. And that’s going to be the drama for the rest of the book. You see, Joseph’s dream is a threat to everyone in the family. When Jacob rebukes Joseph, do you see what’s behind that? This is no longer funny, Joseph. If it stays a dream, no harm, no foul. But you seem to be pretty assured of this. If that dream even so much as hints as entering into reality we have a serious problem. And everyone in the narrative is going to try to kill the dream. And the battle for the rest of the book is going to be between God who is hidden in the dream and the dream killers. But because God is in the dream, it can’t be stopped. Joseph’s brothers can’t stop it. Potipher’s wife can’t stop it. The baker can’t stop it. Pharaoh can’t stop it. Joseph overcomes the millionth, billionth odds and actually rises to power in a foreign nation to the glory of Yahweh, the God of Israel. You see, when God is for us, who can be against us? Like Jesus, Joseph, the one despised and rejected by his family, ultimately is the agent of their salvation and countless others. Joseph shows how God’s secret providence is behind the darkest deeds of men and works to their ultimate good. What a story! Application Now last week you were handed this Joseph booklet. And if you didn’t get one, they are fanned out beautifully in the foyer beneath the triple screens on your right as you exit. You’ve kind of been bombarded with booklets. But take some time in this. Every week you’ll be given discussion questions for your family devotions, for your small group, or just for you personally. There are also some suggested resources and extra resources to dig deeper.

Those of us who enjoy success in the real estate business are typically introduced to a model, an investor operating at a scale we never considered, who gives us an idea for what’s possible and a vision for the future. And if we’re smart, we can learn from their mistakes and leverage their knowledge and experience as a springboard, affording us a more direct path to our own financial freedom. Jacob Blackett is the Founder and CEO of Holdfolio, a platform that connects investors with high-yield investments in the real estate industry, and Syndication Pro, a software company that helps syndicators raise capital and manage investors online. Jacob got his start doing fix-and-flips as a 19-year-old sophomore in college, and today, he has placed over $50M into income-producing real estate, building a portfolio of 600+ units (as the lead sponsor) and a network of 3K registered investors. On this episode of Apartment Building Investing, Jacob joins me to explain how an infomercial inspired his interest in real estate and share his journey from fix-and-flips to wholesaling to SFH rentals to multifamily. He walks us through the steps he took to scale his real estate business, describing why it’s beneficial to have an in-house property management team and how the technology he built to raise capital online became Syndication Pro. Listen in to understand how Jacob overcame losing $40K on his first deal and learn how to avoid his mistakes by joint venturing with an experienced team early on! Jacob Wellock is the founder of The Welded Athlete and co-owner of Double Edge Fitness in Reno, Nevada. He’s also Lindsey Valenzuela’s head coach. We had a BLAST nerding out about programming for general fitness vs competitors for the first half of this episode. Building skills, getting stronger, and improving your conditioning at the same time. We talk about the secret sauce that doesn’t really exist. But how do we get as close to that line as possible? Then we dive into what it takes to prepare a professional. How important is individualized program design? What was the progression and timeline like for Lindsey Valenzuela after she had her baby? What types of movements were complete “no-nos”? When was it time to kick things up a notch? How do you support athletes mentally and emotionally? How do you pull the reigns back? And so much more. It was truly a pleasure to get inside Jacob’s head. I’ll sum up with a post of his that really resonated with me. After chatting with him, I really believe it’s a representation of how he operates: “The lion knows it's a lion. It doesn't hide that or change for anyone. The lion also doesn't go around telling all the other animals that it is a lion, all of the other animals already know. Strive to be like the lion. Make your presence known through your actions without having to tell everyone about it. The lion knows how to rest just as easy as it knows how to kill. As an athlete, you should strive to have this mindset. Be like the lion.” Show Notes: (3:48) - Origins (7:45) - GPP vs Competitive programming (9:33) - How to cater to both as a gym owner (12:37) - Flow of the class workouts (19:15) - Importance of having fun for newcomers (24:55) - Articulating the stimulus you want to achieve (28:30) - Approach to strength training (36:22) - Testing periods and benchmarks (41:15) - Recovery and managing daily stressors (43:10) - How Jacob got connected with Lindsey Valenzuela (49:46) - What were Lindsey’s expectations as an athlete (52:15) - Bridging her back into training after pregnancy (56:07) - What were absolute no-no’s to stay away from after pregnancy (1:00:25) - How to support athletes mentally and physically (1:09:19) - Balancing coaching and competing (1:20:13) - “The lion knows it’s a lion.” Resources we may have talked about: Welded Athlete Programming Relentless How you can connect with Jacob: http://doubleedgefitness.com Instagram: @theweldedathlete Instagram: @jacobjw7 If you wanna grab any book we’ve talked about in the past, head over to theairbornemind.com/readinglist. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/ELDOA Four months ago, a guy knocked on my front door. He'd flown all the way up from Alabama to my house to train me in a new method of movement and deep fascial stretching that I had never before encountered…something called the "ELDOA Method". Now don't get me wrong: I've done my fair share of mobility training. For example, in the article "", I delve into how, on a weekly basis, I engage in everything from active stretching to yoga to foam rolling to traction to deep tissue massage and beyond. But Jacob Schoen, the guy who showed up at my house (and my guest on today's podcast) and trained me for eight solid hours over the course of a weekend, introduced me to this new form of extremely intensive "stretching", and helped me discover something I now take breaks from work to do each day and one of the best ways to eliminate low back pain, heal the spine, and get a full body myofascial stretch. It looks like this: Jacob Schoen is the owner and founder of SHIFT Sport and Wellness in New Orleans, La. Jacob is currently studying in the programs of a guy named Dr. Guy Voyer and is using this education to change the way people approach and associate with their pain or performance. By focusing on the purpose, precision, and quality of exercise Jacob inspires people to “move more aware” in the gym and in life. He hopes that by creating awareness in the individual through movement that he can create momentum towards a more connected and conscious culture of health. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Jacob discovered ELDOA after a series of injuries and poor movement patterns developed from cycling and triathlon...[9:47] -Why ELDOA is like using an inversion table on your whole body...[15:15] -What it means to create space within your joint s (and why joints aren't "stacked" the way you would think they are)...[18:30] -On a physiological level, what does ELDOA do, exactly? [22:45] -Why most stretching practices or techniques don't actually target your myofascia, and how ELDOA does...[25:30] -How stretching your wrist and big toe at the same time can, surprisingly, decompress your actual spine...[29:20] -What a sample ELDOA session actually looks like...[31:45] -What it means to "normalize" your muscle tone...[41:12] -What you probably don't know about the bones in the skull and why your jaw and skull bones are so important for decompressing your spine...[45:19] -How to self-adjust your jaw with a dowel...[50:15] -Why Jake is not a fan of foam rolling and deep tissue work and why Ben is...[54:15] -The #1 completely natural supplement you can take that is almost free and that vastly decreases back pain...[69:20] -How often you should do ELDOA...[72:45] -The best way for you to learn how to do ELDOA yourself...[77:00] -And much more! This one is no joke. Scott was able to get money from Amazon that was rightfully his, without selling a product. It has to do with product refunds and damaged products that Amazon has processed in the past, and he owes it all to Jacob, today’s guest. The cool thing about it is that today Jacob is going to give you the step by step process for getting the money that is due to your seller account and he’s going to show you how you can use his automated service to get those refunds credited to your account without you having to lift a finger. It sounds too good to be true but it’s not. You can find out the details on this episode of The Amazing Seller. Stumbling across a cash cow in his Amazon seller account. Jacob sort of accidentally came across a situation in his refund reports that tipped him off to the fact that Amazon was holding some money that was due him in a suspension account. It was money that came as a result of customer refunds that were reconciled but Amazon had never given back to him. All it took was a simple inquiry to Amazon’s seller support and Jacob was able to recover that money on the spot. The more he dug into his reports, the more money he discovered that Amazon had not credited to him properly. On this episode Jacob will show you how he discovered his “cash cow” and how you can use the same tactics to get money that is rightfully yours. Have you checked out your Amazon Seller Refund Report? Inside your seller account you can run all kinds of reports that show you the status of your sales, damaged products, refunds, and other variables that have to do with your products on Amazon. One of those is the “refund report.” It has to do with refunds that have been issued to your customers and the credits and debits to your account that correspond to those refunds. It may sound odd, but quite often you are credited money through the refund process and Amazon lists that money on your refund reports. By comparing that number with actual money you’ve been credited, you can find money that Amazon owes you but you’ve never received. Check out this episode to find out how you can get that money back immediately. Inventory damage is another area where you might be owed some money by Amazon. With any massive warehouse operation like Amazon you are going to eventually have some of your products damaged during handling. It’s part of how the business works. Amazon is usually very good about noting damage and giving you credit for it so that you don’t lose money because of their mistakes.
