Did you know that the average employee spends nearly 2.5 hours per day in drama? Yup, we spend 150 minutes a day gossiping, tattling, withholding buy-in, and resisting change. The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way. Imagine having the right tools to leave the drama ––AKA emotional waste –– behind, and instead spend your time and energy on your actual work and wellbeing. This is the goal of Cy Wakeman, a therapist accidentally turned drama researcher who is recognized for cultivating a counter-intuitive, reality-based approach to leadership. During this episode, Cy shines a light on the part that we ourselves play in creating workplace drama (it's not just a problem that everyone else has) and she provides techniques to improve the way we face these challenging moments in our interactions with colleagues. She also shares her most embarrassing moments ever on stage.Cy is a New York Times best-selling author and a sought-out consultant and speaker for many Fortune 500 companies. She's been featured on the TODAY Show, the AskGaryVee Show with Gary Vaynerchuk, The New York Times, Business Insider, The Daily Muse, SHRM.com and many more. Now she can add being on  the Surfing Corporate podcast to her accolades. You can learn more about Cy Wakeman by checking out her website. You can also follow her on Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and Tiktok. Credits:Surfing Corporate is produced and edited by Aileen Merciel. Cohosts are Aileen Merciel and Glenda Pacanins. Our Intern is Stephany Gil de Sucher.  Surfing Corporate's original theme song is by Chaliwa Music. The rest of our music is by BlueDot Sessions.

New York Times bestselling author and thought leader Cy Wakeman rejoins Dr. Laura on the podcast to share more insight from her newest book, “Life's Messy, Live Happy”. Cy addresses aspects of resiliency and spirituality that contribute to happiness and contentment.Cy describes how her process for seeking answers in life is to ask better questions. She avoids “either/or” questions and challenges herself to reframe how she's asking things and what she's asking. Better questions bring better answers. Dr. Laura and Cy discuss vulnerability, the need for authentic apology, and whether we are allowing ourselves to evolve and to raise our consciousness. Cy also shares some writers, meditation tools, and poets that inspire her daily. This episode will open a window into how near happiness can be to you with a shift in perspective.“And there's universal principles that have been with us for thousands and thousands of years. And they didn't just come from religion. They've come from philosophy, oral traditions, cave petroglyphs … as long as humans have existed, there seems to be some commonality in how we're all seeking to evolve and move through this world with a general state of contentment.”  - Cy WakemanAbout Cy Wakeman:Cy Wakeman is a drama researcher, global thought-leader, and New York Times best-selling author who is recognized for cultivating a counter-intuitive, reality-based approach to leadership. Backed by over 25 years of unparalleled experience, Wakeman's philosophy offers a new lens through which employees and executives alike, can shift their attention inward, sharpen their focus on personal accountability, and uncover their natural state of innovation simply by ditching the drama.Deemed “the secret weapon to restoring sanity to the workplace,” Wakeman has helped companies such as Google, Facebook, Viacom, Uber, NBC Universal, NASA, Pfizer, Johns Hopkins, Stanford Health Care, Keurig Dr. Pepper, AMC Theatres, White Castle, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and countless others learn to navigate our rapidly changing world using good mental processes to harness energy wasted in workplace drama and reinvest that effort into achieving profound business results. As a highly sought-after conference headliner, Cy Wakeman holds a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation from the National Speaker's Association, placing her within the top 3% of speakers. Dr. Laura welcomes New York Times bestselling author and thought leader Cy Wakeman back to the podcast. Dr. Laura dives into aspects of Cy's most recent book, “Life's Messy, Live Happy”, and Cy offers her unique and inspirational perspective on the reality of why she wrote the book.Cy Wakeman challenges listeners to examine what happiness really is and discusses what she terms “toxic positivity” with Dr. Laura. Cy did not want to write a book simply telling people how to be happy, but wanted to say “hey, join in the club of humanness - this is our human experience”. She weighs in on the three questions that have changed her life, the true depths of how to look at gratitude, and the differences between self-care and self-soothing. Cy's warm presence and the insightful thoughts she shares with Dr. Laura are not to be missed.“And so I wanted to write a book that wasn't about toxic positivity, like pressuring people to be happy in the midst of a pandemic, but really showing people how you can be happy in the context of your entire life, that there's space for all of it. You can build a life big enough to hold sadness and happiness at the same time.” - Cy WakemanAbout Cy Wakeman:Cy Wakeman is a drama researcher, global thought-leader, and New York Times best-selling author who is recognized for cultivating a counter-intuitive, reality-based approach to leadership. “If someone says they can’t go through the door, or the back door, or the side door, I’m coming down through the fucking chimney. You've got to figure out a different way to get what you want, it’s not always going to be the same way as everyone else.” - Lauryn Evarts Bosstick   I’m particularly excited for this episode because it’s an interview with someone who is brought up on this show A LOT as an example of a personal brand (and overall brand) who is doing it right and killing it in their space. I've mentioned her, guests have mentioned her...   My guest this week is Lauryn Evarts Bosstick, the creator of The Skinny Confidential, which is it’s own media empire, including a blog, a book, an incredibly successful podcast and she’s not stopping there.  Lauryn’s collaborated with a who's who of brands from Nordstrom to Victorias Secret  TopShop, Free People, SHAPE, Reebok, Nasty Gal, Elizabeth Arden, Skinnygirl, Benefit Cosmetics, Roberto Cavalli, Urban Decay, Urban Outfitters, and more!   On last week’s episode, I interviewed Lauryn’s husband the CEO of Dear Media and also one half of The Skinny Confidential podcast, Michael Bosstick. If you have any interest in the business of podcasting, monetization, the future of audio, influencers, you’ll want to check out that episode.    And Michael and Lauryn do a lot together - business wise, brand wise, and obviously they are married, but it was never a question to me that I really wanted to interview them separately because they are worth knowing separately.   They both provide so much value and experience in so many areas that are relevant to this audience that it wouldn’t have done it justice to make it one show. They really are such a power couple and I’m honored to know them (they really are class acts on top of it!).   Before we get into the show, I want to give even more context on why Lauryn’s brand is one to watch. I started following her journey in 2016 after I met her and Michael when they came in for a filming of The #Askgaryvee Show. How hard she worked was obvious then and the growth and the evolution of her brand in the last three years is completely a result of her hustle.     Lauryn's brand is a true case study of building brand the right way. This is a woman who lives and breathes her brand and Her execution is frankly flawless.  I’ve dealt with a countless number of personal brands at this point and here’s a difference I want to note for people. There are plenty of people out there who are very calculated about their brands, Lauryn is intentional. And that’s a huge difference. She IS the skinny confidential.   Some people know their audience down to the last detail, but don’t fully know how to execute on that, but Lauryn is great at delivering exactly what they want and building a true community. Again, people throw around the words community - her Skinny Confidential private Facebook group, which you should definitely check out if you’re a woman because it’s only for women, IS active. I can personally say I’ve met some great women from that group. You can check out any photos, videos or posts from live events she does - she gets a huge turnout. Even just check her comments on Instagram. She gets engagement.    All while also being a master at monetizing in a way that feels organic. She’s one of the few influencers in the space who has gotten me to convert based on her recommendations. I’ve been watching her adapt and grow as a business woman and I’m so excited to see what she’s building next. We literally ran out of time, but I could honestly have talked to her about just her brand for hours. I can’t say enough good things about the value she dropped in this interview. She’s told her story a million times so I didn’t want to waste time there, you can head to theskinnyconfidential.com/about if you want some more background context, but we cover all parts of her business from her content process, to her different income streams to how she’s strategically evolving her brand.   Let’s just get into it, please enjoy my conversation with Laura Evarts Bosstick.   To connect with Lauryn: Instagram The Skinny Confidential TSC Podcast My episode on TSCPodcast To connect with me: Free Brand Audit Free LinkedIn Training Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Website Facebook

He is also the author of four New York Time’s bestselling books including Crush It!, The Thank You Economy, Jab Jab Jab Right Hook, and #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneurs Take on Leadership Social Media, and Self-Awareness. When Gary was fresh out of college he took his family’s wine business and grew it from a 3 million dollar a year business to a 60 million dollar a year business. He did this in just five years. He is also a prolific angel investor and a venture capitalist investing in companies like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Uber, and BirchBox before eventually co-founding Vayner/RSE, a 25 million dollar investment fund. In today’s show, we talk about how Gary was approached by a publisher and got his first book deal. We also discuss Gary’s feelings on self-publishing, and what it means to Gary to build a brand. We also touch on business and book promoting tactics that Gary used to become as successful as he is today. Gary also talks about the importance of finding what you are good at and the important concept of “hustle” and just putting in the work.  You can find Gary here: Gary Vaynerchuk Website @garyvee on Twitter Gary’s YouTube Channel Gary Vaynerchuk on Facebook Gary Vaynerchuk on LinkedIn VaynerMedia #AskGaryVee Show    Show Notes [01:42] How Gary reacts to technology and the things going on around him. Miller This podcast is for creatives who are pursuing a career in freelance while making great art for a living. However, it's more than that in my opinion and I believe it focuses on creative personal / professional development. his quirky sense of humor and laid-back approach really elevates his honest advice on building your creative career. His “not taking himself so seriously” approach really helps me articulate my own thoughts and to not be so serious myself all the time. The #AskGaryVee Show with Gary Vaynerchuk The reason I find the show so valuable for creatives is because he gives you a real-time pulse of what’s going on in the world with social media and business marketing. “You've got to know what you are good at — that’s the game. If I had a potion that could allow somebody to become fundamentally self-aware and know what they’re good at, they would all win.”Gary VaynerchukNobody works harder — and smarter — than Gary Vaynerchuk. That's because the maniac known online as Gary Vee operates on one mode and one mode only: full blast. Gregarious, confident and incomparably charismatic, Gary is never at a loss for opinions on everything from the future of social media and the preeminent importance of authenticity to his almost antiquated but refreshing take on the importance, power and relevance of a committed work ethic – a welcome breath of fresh air that stands in stark contradiction to our pervasive, myopic lifehack culture — a regrettable, technocrat popular trend that woefully overvalues false promise short cuts to success over passion, service and fidelity to the journey.Internet omnipotent with over 1.2 million followers on Twitter, 500K+ Facebook friends and a vast and loyal YouTube subscriber base, I suspect many of you are already daily consumers of Gary's persistent, relentless feed of videos, blog posts, social media updates, Snapchat stories and live casts. For those unfamiliar, Gary is a Belarus-born entrepreneur, venture capitalist and CEO of NYC-based VaynerMedia, one of the fastest growing digital ad & marketing agencies in the world.A mainstay on YouTube, Gary hosts the hugely popular #AskGaryVee Show and dons protagonist duties on #TheDailyVee, a surprisingly hypnotic, behind the scenes gander into Gary’s everyday business life. You've seen him profiled in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Time and Fortune's annual list of 40 under 40. You've watched him on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and Ellen. And maybe you've even read one his three New York Times bestselling books, Crush It*,Jab, Jab, Jab*, Right Hook*,The Thank You Economy* and now #AskGaryVee* – his newest offering which hits bookstores everywhere March 8. A compelling and entertaining distillation of practical, timeless workplace advice on entrepreneurship and management for anyone launching their own company, working in digital media, starting their first job or simply seeking inspiration, Gary's fourth book is certain to be a massive, ubiquitous success.A legitimate marketing & business genius, Gary is a kick in the pants – loud, irreverent and unconventional. But he’s also incredibly warm, personable and quite giving when it comes to freely sharing a seemingly endless stream of good ideas, tools and strategies he credits as part and parcel of his personal success equation.Conversing with Gary is a bit like trying to wrangle a wild horse, so this one is a bit all over the place. Gary Vaynerchuk builds businesses. Fresh out of college he took his family wine business and grew it from a $3M to a $60M business in just five years. Now he runs VaynerMedia, one of the world’s hottest digital agencies. Along the way he became a prolific angel investor and venture capitalist, investing in companies like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Uber, and Birchbox before eventually co-founding VaynerRSE, a $25M angel fund. Gary also currently hosts The #AskGaryVee Show, a way of providing as much value as possible by taking questions about social media, entrepreneurship, startups, and family businesses and giving his answers based on a lifetime of building successful, multi-million dollar companies. The show is also available as a podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, and SoundCloud.   A Few Steps Ahead: Don’t be crippled by trying to quantify success -- use all the tools at your disposal -- try to be four to five years ahead of everyone else Technology and Innovation: The company’s of now will be done in eight years if they refuse to adapt and change -- to grow you have to ask dumb questions grounded in the future of business Storytelling: Every business has a story to tell -- don’t disrespect social channels -- they are a living and breathing channel of communication Transparency: We live in an ever-changing transparent world -- if you're company’s in the yellow-pages or newspaper because you're afraid of social -- then an opportunity will be missed Humanise It: People will follow the story -- communicate the story -- humanise it -- where is the personality Give or Push: Old fashioned rules -- you have to become a giving business through social channels -- before you ask and receive Value-Proposition: A good value-proposition shows your consumer the value they will receive   How best to connect with Gary: https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/
