Alex Dorr speaks to audiences and organizations all over about ditching the drama and getting more productivity and engagement from employees and more overall value for companies. His session at Digital CPA in Denver in December 2024 focused on many of those same principles and was tailored to modern accounting firms. On the Journal of Accountancy podcast, Dorr, vice president at Reality-Based Leadership, explained more about how readiness for change can lead to a better work reality for employees and managers alike. What you'll learn from this episode: · Dorr's reflection on whether he was a “high-drama” college basketball player. · Why the examination of an employee's or team's value should include an assessment of “readiness for what's next.” · The “juicy” question Dorr answered about speaking to accounting groups. · The importance of validating someone's experience in the workplace before addressing ways to make it better.
Alex Dorr is the Vice-President of Reality Based Leadership.
This week's episode is all about a common pattern that happens when people are really excited about Reality-Based Leadership, or they just learned some of our new techniques after a session. They accidentally begin weaponizing Reality-Based Leadership, and the ideas. We get it, you're excited about some new approaches and really looking forward to trying to shift a place your team has been stuck, or an individual has been stuck for a long time. What often happens, is people grab the harshest part of the message and use it on the person that's running away from them the fastest, and then the content doesn't work. This is one example of many that are talked about in this week's podcast of where the loving part of Reality-Based Leadership gets weaponized and used for evil. So today's episode, Cy and Alex discuss some of the ways that great techniques that can work most of the time, get used in a way that's harsh and actually backfires for people that are excited about Reality-Based Leadership. This can affect even the most seasoned practitioners of our content and tools, so this is a great reminder. In fact every two years just like what sparked this episode, there's usually an example that comes through that someone grabbed a deeper part of the philosophy and used that first in their very next meeting after a session, and we hear reports that it backfired, then the groups a little bit turned off from RBL. This podcast is designed to help those who may have experienced setbacks, offering a chance to reset, as well as those eager to maintain the momentum they've built with their teams. It's all about preventing the misuse of the tools, practices, and techniques of Reality-Based Leadership, while ensuring we focus on loving people up so we can call people up to greatness.
In this episode, Cy and Alex share some incredible insights from Reality-Based Leadership's Leadership Development Series! While many know them for their engaging keynotes, their deep dive programs are all about transforming teams into modern leaders who can ditch the drama and turn excuses into tangible results. They reveal some impressive data from participants, showcasing significant boosts in career satisfaction and leadership skills. For instance, 50% of respondents reported higher job satisfaction, 94% said they'd stay in their roles post-course, and burnout was reduced by an astounding 50%! On the leadership side, 55% feel more confident coaching others on the spot, while 70% have enhanced their ability to hold teams accountable. Plus, 60% are ready to lead their teams through change with newfound confidence. Remarkably, 80% are excited to drive results without just hoping for the best. And every single participant is now using at least one powerful tool daily to elevate their leadership. Cy and Alex also explain how the program is structured, from interactive sessions to group coaching and ongoing support that truly makes a difference. If your current training isn't delivering the results you're looking for, this conversation is a must-listen. And if you're interested in redesigning your curriculum, Ana from our team can work with you to create a tailored approach for your team. Don't miss out! Email us today at info@cywakeman.com
A leader recently asked Alex and Cy, “What happens when you're trying Reality-Based Leadership or using a tool and everything goes silent? Does that mean that the tools not working? What do I do when there's silence? What do I do when that silence feels like it has some extra tension attached to it, is it working?” All of these questions came up and in this podcast, Cy and Alex explore their own experiences in coaching with running their own business facilitating tools that have led to silence. And what that really means from a Reality-Based Leadership perspective. Many people believe that something is not working when there's silence after introducing a tool technique, coaching question, but we would say that actually means you are just beginning Reality-Based Leadership and getting to the good stuff, cultivating accountability. Self reflection is the foundation of accountability, and self reflection often includes silence. So in this episode, we're going to share with you ways to use silence to better your leadership and prove your use of the tools and most importantly, moving people from why we can't to how we could. And moving people from where they're stuck into where they're hoping to be. You'll love this episode. We had fun doing it and can't wait to hear your feedback on ways you can use these tools in your leadership.
One of the top three biggest questions we get at Reality-Based Leadership is, How do I get my team to buy-in? How do I get them to buy into what needs to be done? How do I get them to buy into strategies? How do we get people to buy into changes the organization needs us to execute on? And the next question after that is, what do I do If I thought I had buy-in, and then it turned out it was fake, or it seems to be where people say they're bought in, but the behaviors are different? So in this podcast, Cy and Alex talk about this pattern, if it's happening and how you might be able to address fake buy in, how you can go after more buy in, and the truth is, buy in is the first step of accountability. It's about commitment. Buy in is a verb and if an individual isn't able to offer up their buy-in, it's really game over when it comes to happiness results in engagement at work. So Cy and Alex do all they can to come up with our best techniques to help you go after buy-in, secure buy-in, but remember you can only work with the willing, you can't buy someone else in, and this podcast will give you some techniques to figure out what's really going on.
Many leaders struggle with giving freedom for their employees to do their best work, because they forget to provide some structure for them to work in. In today's episode, Alex and Cy talk about leader's role in finding the balance between structure and play. In the conversation, they go into a key Reality-Based Leadership focus that all leaders need to have, is setting your nonnegotiable as a leader to then get people to buy into those. From there, people are allowed to bring their best self play in the workplace so to speak and create magic. They also cover why it's so important to focus on this balance because too much structure and people believe we're over proceduralized. And they feel like they can't do any work and too much play, then it's really a free-for-all and innovation can't happen. So the magic comes from just enough structure and then people are allowed to innovate and collaborate knowing they have the same basics, so this is a really, really important episode to setting the groundwork for good leadership and Cy and Alex can't wait to hear your thoughts.

If you're a leader that is currently leading your team through change, transformation, innovation, and noticing that there is a lot of resistance concern or fear, this is the podcast for you. Cy and Alex dive deep into what they call Business Readiness, which is their modern take on traditional change management. In short, change management has been the name of the game in leadership for years and in many ways still is, but Reality-Based Leadership is starting to see that it is not ready for the modern workplace. It is a model that responds to change. It notices change happening and then starts to manage it, where Business Readiness is a forward, thinking, leaning in to ensure that people are ready, willing, and able to deliver on what the business needs. This shift and mindset will help you transform in the way which your team embraces and sees it as an opportunity to capitalize on it, so where change management focuses on change being least disruptive to the people, Business Readiness is a model that helps you ensure that change is least disruptive to your customers, your patients, and your organization. Cy and Alex go back-and-forth on how this connects to resilience and how you can build resilience in your people and readiness in your systems in your organization. And this sweet spot is how to disruption-proof your workplace and ensure that it can handle whatever change comes its way. You don't want to miss any word in this podcast, so be sure to tune in.

In this episode of CISO Tradecraft, host G Mark Hardy welcomes Alex Dorr to discuss Reality-Based Leadership and its impact on reducing workplace drama and enhancing productivity. Alex shares his journey from professional basketball to becoming an evangelist of reality-based leadership, revealing how this approach helped him personally and professionally. They delve into the concepts of SBAR (Situation, Background, Analysis, Recommendation) for effective communication, toggling between low self and high self to manage personal reactions, and practical tools like 'thinking inside the box' to confront and solve workplace issues within given constraints. The conversation underscores the importance of focusing on actionable strategies over arguing with the drama and reality of workplace dynamics, aiming to foster a drama-free, engaged, and productive work environment. One of the core philosophies of living Reality-Based Leadership at work is to stop judging, start helping. People love this as a way to get started and dive right in, but sometimes their helping becomes doing everyone else's work, or jumping in to fix a lot of things. This creates the risk of becoming an over-functioner or an enabler in your workplace. So many people that just start reality-based leadership say that I started to say how can I help and next thing you know I was busier than ever and couldn't get my work done. This is another step in the evolution of being a reality-based leader is how to jump in to help without taking on everyone else's work. In this episode, Cy and Alex talk about this pattern and how to watch for it and how to see when you're helping is actually hurting and how to begin saying yes and separating out how the work gets done to be able to keep momentum going and agree to goals but also keep your boundaries. With these boundaries, you're able to then take on the short term issues that need to be taken care of where you do jump in and fix, but then you can leave some space to have others help you with midterm issues and then long-term issues in the workplace. Truly a powerful episode to make sure that one of the best tools of reality-based leadership doesn't get weaponized and used for evil. Enjoy, share with your colleagues and make sure you subscribe to the podcast and have discussions on this topic. We can't wait to hear from you.
Ever thought that doing Reality-Based Leadership might take the humanness out of work? What Alex and Cy cover in this session is that RBL actually brings the true humanness back to work. We don't try to bring our whole self to work but instead, we invite you to bring your most evolved self to work. This means that we're not trying to take the humanness out of work we're trying to limit the effect of the human condition on us doing our best work, or at least the lack of the human condition that leads to drama. So in this episode, Alex and Cy dive deep into how to bring your most evolved self to work. We discuss a great story about what happens when the judgments are reduced, and how humans create things in the world with less judgment. Also, we give you practical tips to ensure that people are finally able to bring their most authentic, evolved self to the workplace to do their best work in a highly engaged way. We can't wait to hear your feedback from this episode and make sure to subscribe and share with others to have a conversation about bringing the humanness back to work through Reality-Based Leadership.

Leaders don't manage people, they manage energy. Drama researcher, thought leader, and New York Time best-selling author Cy Wakeman joins Erin to discuss what it means to manage the energy of your team & the individuals you lead by analyzing emotional waste and how to replace it with good mental processes. If your team is burning out quickly and you're not sure what you can do – this is a good place to start. More about Cy: Cy Wakeman is an International Speaker on Leadership & Management, a Global Thought Leader, and Drama Researcher—which is a career she discovered accidentally and has since quantified how much drama there actually is in the workplace. Her research has shown that the average employee spends nearly 2.5 hours per day in drama, gossiping, tattling, withholding buy-in, resisting change and stepping down from accountability. Drama is emotional waste, any unproductive thought or behavior and like any other waste in the workplace. Now, her work is focused on giving leaders tools to recapture that emotional waste and upcycle it into results. Cy founded Reality-Based Leadership, her company that teaches leaders and individual contributors ways to lead, and reality that diffuses drama in the workplace. Cy is also a New York Times best-selling author and has published four books, the latest of which is Life's Messy, Live Happy: Things Don't Have to Be Perfect for You to Be Content (2022). Have you ever wondered how to manage gender expectations as a female leader, even if your Enneagram type's gifts don't align with gender norms? Look no further! We spoke with Kelli Thompson about how to harness your powers and excel as a leader, regardless of your personality type.Kelli Thompson is a keynote speaker, writer and leadership coach. She has delivered talks, webinars, and workshops for many organizations including the Young Professionals Summit, Executive Women International, Medical Solutions, Management Women Inc, and more. She has over 10 years of leadership experience for financial services and technology organizations, and is certified in Reality-Based Leadership, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and the Enneagram. Kelli is actively writing her first book, The Clarity Effect, to be released in 2022.We begin our conversation with some background on how Kelli became a leadership coach and what drew her to using Enneagrams in her coaching. As Kelli describes, she started in sales before moving on to marketing. Marketing is all about psychology, and as Kelli was always into personality tests - like the Meyers-Briggs test - it was a natural fit. She soon discovered another form of personality categorization, the Enneagram. Kelli states that an Enneagram is different in that it's not just about what your personality is; it's also why or how you developed to be this way. If you're not familiar with Enneagrams, Kelli gives a useful overview here. The name comes from Greek, meaning nine personalities. Indeed, with Enneagrams, there are nine fundamental types. (Kelli mentions that there are actually 27 types, but we don't get into quite that much detail here!) Host Raymond Hawkins discovered that despite lacking formal leadership training, Cy Wakeman, President & Founder of Reality Based Leadership, has written a plethora of books in the leadership genre. As a former counselor in human psychology, Wakeman revamped traditional leadership views. She explained, “I saw the world from a viewpoint of shared accountability at the time that most people were seeing the world as the leader was really responsible for the wellbeing of their employees.” According to Wakeman, an individual can experience the same organization differently depending on their accountability. When “high accountables” are in pain, they question their role and how to address deficits. After addressing their role, what remains falls on the organization. “Low-accountables,” on the other hand, hold more of a victim mindset and first point to the organization as the source of their pain. Wakeman began implementing these ideas through reality-based leadership training to healthcare businesses that were losing money. Soon, other organizations began to request training. Wakeman has since built upon her training philosophy with many other essential concepts. For example, she emphasized that “A lot of people believe their circumstances are the reason they can't succeed. Your circumstances are the realty in which you must succeed.” Thinking inside of the box given the restraints to achieve a goal is a must. Leaders are key to this; they help move the ‘why we can't' to ‘how we could.'” Perhaps Wakeman's most important point is this: “True resilience is not about being the smartest or how much perseverance you have, it lies in the collective genius—have the best network of positive relationships, ask for help, and be vulnerable.” These concepts only touch the tip of the iceburg. For more details, you can reference Wakeman's books, visit realtybasedleadership.com, sign up for her newsletter, or follow @cywakeham.

Does your drama you bring to the table impact others more the higher up you get in your career? This was a great questions asked by a recent executive leader at one of my sessions that got me thinking. This podcast breaks down my thoughts on whether the impact of our personal drama as a higher-level leader in an organization is grander than our initial research has discovered. In our research at Reality-Based Leadership, we found that your overall value that you bring to your work decreases greatly if you are high in emotional expensiveness or lacking fluency in what causes drama in an organization. In fact, the amount of drama has a 3x negative effect in comparison to your performance and your future potential when you look at the total value you are bringing to a team, organization, interaction or customer experience. This -3x factor is quite an eye-opener for many who hear our work for the first time. Below is the link to do your own self-assessment and learn more about our Employee Value Equation and the cost of our own drama. https://www.realitybasedleadership.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Employee-Value-Equation-1.pdf But in a recent session in NYC with an executive group, an attendee posed the question about whether as a CEO or high level leader that your drama could be even grander than that because of your influence and position in a company. Could it be -5x, -8x or even a -10x because so many are aware of your every move, comment and non-verbal. After all, you are the final decision point for your organization and many look to your leadership for guidance. I had not considered this as an option so on the plane after the event I did some reflecting and put together this podcast. So this is a great episode for anyone wondering about: What is the effect of my drama as a leader on the organization How to lead better with less drama What is the cost of drama on high-level leaders Conflict Resolution and understanding our part in solving issues This really is something to consider and I can't wait to hear what you all think about this topic and my reflections. It really makes you think about each day and your influence especially for some of you who have a determined team working alongside you. Your influence if you are not bringing your highest self to the table could be an even grander cause of chaos in your workplace. If you have any feedback or questions let's continue the discussion at any of the places below: Twitter Instagram Facebook For more of my videos and behind-the-scenes footage of my keynotes and speaking engagements check out my YouTube Channel. Today's episode features an idea that has been keeping me up at night. Could there ever be some universal good mental processes that everyone agrees on that lead to more happiness and results in our lives? If so, could they become non-negotiable as professional ways to behave in meetings and discussions. I'm fascinated with this idea and share some of those good mental processes as examples in this episode. Drama is an enormous interference in our life and at Reality-Based Leadership we have found that the average person is spending 2.5 hours per day in drama. This is arguing with reality, blaming, moaning and whining, resisting change, not aligning with their organization - saying things like "this is sick and wrong and shouldn't be happening and I wouldn't have made that decision..." It is chaos instead of clarity. Drama is simply mental/emotional waste in our minds that lead to us taking poor actions and getting bad results. In business, if we have waste, we eliminate it by putting in a good process. How could we get rid of emotional waste? Using good mental processes. In this episode I consider a world where we had everyone align to good mental processes that the research shows leads to more happiness, better choices and better results. If we all are looking for relief and peace and incredible results. Surely, it would make sense to have a chance to universally align to proven good mental processes. We’ve all heard the phrase “save the drama for your mama” but it seems like people save the drama for their workplaces. If there’s one thing that’s constant in the workplace is drama and today’s guest, Alex Dorr, has the research to back it. At Reality Based Leadership, they have found the average employee spends 2½ hours a day in drama, which is a form of mental and emotional waste in the workplace. But Alex knows it doesn’t have to be this way. He envisions a world where work is effortless, and teams are drama-free. Standing side-by-side since 2015 with NY Times Bestselling author and thought leader Cy Wakeman, Alex collaborates with organizations and leaders globally to help them ditch the drama from the workplace, hardwire accountability in their teams and turn excuses into results. In this interview, Alex defines Reality Based Leadership and the three ways drama seeps into organizations. He tells us what to do with the drama queens and kings in our organization, how ego plays a role in the drama and leaves us with a tangible tip. Alex gives a process (SBAR) to help steer people away from drama and he offers questions to ask to shut down the drama. This jam-packed interview offers a ton of value. In fact, before I published this interview, I shared his interview with a leader at a drama filled office. If you’ve ever been around drama at work (and who hasn’t?), this interview will help you shut it down. Thank you to our sponsor, Workplace Money Coach. Many people are searching for ways to increase their confidence as a leader, but find themselves holding back. In a recent session of mine, an attendee loved the content but didn't know how to confidently give the techniques a try and wanted some advice. This episode breaks down my thinking on how to truly increase your confidence with some simple techniques and mindset shifts. So many people believe most of your confidence comes from being competent and building skills. Once those skills are built up enough, then you can finally say that you are confident right? But time and time again, I know exactly what to do and how to execute something and then my confidence still waivers. In this episode, I give you some practical strategies to start increasing your confidence as a leader. I argue that much of your confidence comes from understanding the mechanics of your mind and how your stories really decrease your confidence if you don't question them. I loved this topic that the attendee brought up at my session and it was a blast thinking through my current beliefs on confidence and how to build it as a leader. I mentioned I would link the Reality-Based Leadership tools that have given me the confidence to address about any challenge in front of a group I am speaking with. I truly believe if every leader was grounded and fluent in this playlist of tools that they would remain in a constant state of confidence. They are FREE for you to check out and learn! Hope you enjoy this episode and pass it on to anybody else you think it can help. Let's keep the drama free movement rolling! Thank you guys. - Alex If you have any feedback or questions let's continue the discussion at any of the places below: Twitter Instagram Facebook For more of my videos and behind-the-scenes footage of my keynotes and speaking engagements check out my YouTube Channel. The Reality-Based Leadership philosophy really resonates for so many people. It reveals some universal truths and actions steps to start living a drama-free life both at work and at home. However, the ego and the human condition can play tricks on us and often causes some common challenges when first starting to try out the techniques and ideas. Be aware of these as you begin your journey! I feel this is one of the most important episodes I've created to date because if you are starting to believe that you "get it" and others don't when it comes to ditching the drama, you are actually being introduced to the next evolution of your ego that returns you back to judging and not helping. That ego is so sophisticated. This episode is meant to streamline you through the next phase of development as you are practicing the Reality-Based Leadership philosophy and feeling what it is like to have less drama in your life. This will help you sustain that momentum so far! Understanding these 5+ common mistakes that people run into once becoming fans and practitioners of the philosophy will help you jump the next level of drama and emotional expensiveness you can get into. So give these some good thought, attention and self-reflection as you continue your learning. Cy Wakeman is an international keynote speaker, business consultant, New York Times best-selling author, and psychologist. She helps people around the world ditch the drama and turn excuses into results. Naturally, Laurie is a total fangirl. Today, Cy and Laurie talk about how to get the best out of people, whether or not you really NEED leaders, and what the future of work looks like for all of us. Cy has a great strategy for getting clients in the door and to help them take all the negative energy at work and turn it around to positive results based on new actions: she gives her stuff away for free. The individuals who learn from her content then turn around and put the pressure on their leaders to bring her in to do work, and she gets great results. Cy has an interesting take on work NOT being broken. Work, she says, is our reality, and whether or not we succeed in it is up to us. Cy explains the parts of work that are lacking, from leadership to HR, and it all has to do with the people, not the construct. If you’re keen on learning about leadership, you’ve probably noticed there are a million different people speaking and teaching about it. But have you stopped to actually listen to their messages? Sounds a lot like pop psychology, feel-good stuff that, unfortunately, doesn’t really address the problems. Cy shares her take on the current trend of ‘best practices’ and why understanding the human condition is the most important thing you can do, leader or not. You’ve probably heard people talking about the ability to bring your ‘whole self’ to work. Cy disagrees; instead, she urges you to bring your ‘most evolved’ self to work. In fact, Cy doesn’t think you should bring your whole self anywhere, and she explains why you need to be fit for duty beyond the tasks you undertake. Leadership has evolved over the years. In modern times, we’re more concerned with purpose and engagement. Cy shares a surprising insight: engagement without accountability creates entitlement. And more importantly, happiness at work isn’t up to leaders. Cy’s years as a therapist come to bear when she says that a relationship like that is co-dependency and isn’t healthy, and you end up losing the best employees. You need to be willing to pick favorites when it comes to your employees: there are the high and low accountables. High and low performers, and according to Cy, too much attention has been given to low accountables to try to keep them engaged. Cy explains why this is the opposite of what it should be. Can low accountables become high accountables? Sometimes. But is it the responsibility of the organization to make it happen? No. It might seem like a tough choice to make, but Cy believes that a business should instead focus on making themselves a place where high accountables want to work. In fact, there isn’t a shortage of talent, and Cy explains why. You don’t have to harm people and harm the environment to make a profit. That’s a load of bologna according to Cy. Instead, we need to focus on ‘pure profit.’ It’s not what you think. Cy reveals exactly what that means and how businesses can be sustainable without hurting the world. Community has been a buzzword for a while now, whether you’re talking about regionality or groups online. How healthy are the communities in which you find yourself? As a psychologist, Cy has a great message about what makes a healthy community and what makes hers thrive, even with millennials. Cy has a vision for the future of work and what you need to remember is this: it’s not something that’s going to happen TO us. It’s something we need to do for ourselves. It’s where we go beyond ego, salary, title, and all the other things that seem so important to us now. How and why should we do it? Cy shares what drives her to do the work she does. With the future of work being AI and automation, we’re left wondering if the future holds any place for heart and for love. Laurie poses the question to Cy, and she’s got a very heart-centered answer for you. And it all comes back to people and the concept of ego. Here it is you guys! The entire Reality-Based Leadership philosophy in one episode. Many have asked for a full overview with stories and examples to bring the ditch the drama philosophy altogether and this is it. Ready to recapture the 2 hours per day per person that is lost to drama at work? Listen in! Reality-Based Leadership is a revolutionary leadership philosophy calling for an entirely new role for the leader. Leaders have traditionally been responsible for inspiring others, for motivating others, for engaging others or making their people buy-in. The problem? These are personal choices by the individual and cannot even be the role for the leader. The role of the leader in today's reality is not to inspire or to motivate another - the true role of the modern leader is to help eliminate emotional waste (drama) from the workplace by facilitating good mental processes. Businesses have laser-focus on eliminating waste from their workplaces with good processes improvement. If you want to eliminate mental/emotional waste from the workplace (2 hours per day in our stats per person) you must be able to facilitate good mental processes and hold people accountable to using these good mental processes that will lead to happiness, high engagement and results. Learning and practicing the Reality-Based Leadership philosophy will help people recognize the one thing that unites us all and causes us to default into drama - our human condition. By working to overcome our own human condition and helping others to do the same we will start to lead teams that quickly recognize when they are in drama and help each other get into better mental processes to recapture that precious energy and use it towards better ROI. In this podcast you will learn: How the human condition leads us to stress and stepping down instead of stepping up The New Employee Value Equation and the role emotional expensiveness plays in the value we add Ways in which drama arises in our daily interactions and how to quickly redirect that energy into a better ROI How happiness is a choice when you understand personal accountability Reality-Based Thinking and the importance of not believing everything you think What it truly means to be aligned to your organization and how to add value in your role at work How to drive for results and succeed in spite of the circumstances you believe are holding you back. BREAKING DOWN THE PHILOSOPHY BY TOPIC: Part 1 - 21:27 (Introduction to RBL and Drama) Part 2 - 31:23 (Troublesome Trends and Your Human condition) Part 3 - 47:49 (Why You Should Lead First, Manage Second) Part 4 - 102:54 (New Employee Value Equation and the Role of the Modern Leader) Part 5 - 124:28 (More Happiness With Personal Accountability) Part 6 - 138:48 (Less Stress with Reality-Based Thinking) Part 7 - 152:16 (Truly Buy-In with Organizational Alignment) Part 8 - 211:07 (Start Capitalizing on Changing Times) Part 9 - 218:07 (Succeed in Spite of Your Circumstances) Here is a link to download the Edit Your Story Tool I mentioned in this podcast to relieve stress and help with venting. Episode #28 - Book Report Reality Based Leadership by Cubicle Insanity
Cy Wakeman joins the show to discuss her Reality Based Leadership program. Cy is a dynamic international keynote speaker, business consultant, New York Times bestselling author, and global thought leader with over 25 years experience cultivating a revolutionary new approach to leadership. Grounded in reality, Wakeman’s philosophy has helped organizations and individuals all over the world learn to ditch the drama and turn excuses into results.Wakeman’s professional journey began when she was promoted to her first management position in the late 1980’s. Rather than forcing ineffective, conventional management practices into her workplace, Wakeman began developing and teaching her employees a reality-based mindset, one that is founded in personal accountability. What she discovered was inspiring – her employees were not only motivated to succeed, but they were also driven to deliver results, adept to change, and emanate happiness on the job. Inspired to help others transform their organizations and their work, Wakeman began consulting and training. Today, she visits more than 200 companies each year, empowering employees and executives alike to take control of and invest in their work.Wakeman’s newest book, No Ego, points out that Ego-driven behaviors are the #1 source of drama in workplaces today, and it’s costing organizations billions annually. The philosophy of “perfecting the environment” to create employee engagement just feeds the ego and generates huge amounts of drama and emotional waste. It is high time for a modern leadership philosophy that provides simple tools and techniques to eliminate drama from our organizations, deliver up employees who say yes to what’s next, and cultivate accountability, not engagement, to drive big business results.www.cywakeman.com
Cy Wakeman (@cywakeman) is the founder of Reality Based Leadership. She wrote a book called No Ego. No Ego is a leadership book, which is an unusual read for me since I'm a solopreneur, but I couldn't put it down. You might hear me talk about ego from time to time. I think my conversation with Ryan Holiday back on episode 31 was the first time I was really thinking about ego. He wrote the book Ego is the Enemy. Since then I've come to realize that ego is the number one enemy that can hold you back from reaching your creative potential. Your ego will keep you from being accountable to yourself and what you want to accomplish. It will direct your attention outside of you, and cause you to blame others. It will cause you to make limiting excuses for yourself. But if you're able to bypass your own ego, something magical happens. You start to concentrate on what you can control. You start to see a connection between your actions and the results you get. This is what I loved so much about Cy's book, No Ego. It's a powerful book for keeping ego from ruining your workplace, but at the same time it's a powerful book for keeping ego from ruining yourself and sabotaging your own potential. In particular, expect to learn: Why the ego can keep us from achieving our professional and personal goals How to silence our ego Why elaborate employee engagements programs may be a source of entitlement and can actually be detrimental to company performance All topics discussed: Cy’s new book, No Ego Why our organisations must be in a constant change of readiness How the ego keeps us from being our best How to silence our egos Why suffering is a choice The cost of emotional waste Why choosing to do one new thing each month makes us resilient How learning to say “yes” to more can be a source of growth The cost of drama in our organisations What the real cost of comparing ourselves to others is The power of depersonalisation What “BMW driving” is and how it applies to your company Don’t think change, think next Why employee engagement programs can be a bad thing Why we should stress accountability over engagement How to identify and attract emotionally inexpensive and effective employees Why a company’s or a person’s circumstances shouldn’t be used as an excuse Show Notes: Cy’s website: Realitybasedleadership.com @cywakeman on Twitter and Instagram Cy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEOp127ZAQAz7MMarBmygA Cy on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CyWakeman/ Cy’s books on Amazon: No Ego: https://amzn.to/2x9xpPl Reality-Based Leadership: https://amzn.to/2NDSPhP The Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace: https://amzn.to/2QoFY1x --- Listen on iTunes @ goo.gl/sMnEa0 Listen on Stitcher @ www.stitcher.com/podcast/future Listen on Google Play @ bit.ly/FSGoog If you've got any questions on this podcast feel free to send an email to steve@collectivecamp.us or tweet me on Twitter @steveglaveski or @future_squared Follow me on Instagram: @thesteveglaveski Like us? LearnChair Radio host Bob Dragone talks with speaker, author and coach Cy Wakeman about the principles of Reality-Based Leadership. Cy explains how she came upon her unique approach to leadership development and how it allows an organization's leaders to cut through the everyday drama of the workplace to deliver better results. In the discussion, Cy steps us through how Reality-Based Leadership is about becoming the revolutionary new type of leader needed today—one who can change the way people think about and perceive their circumstances. A Reality-Based Leader deals with the facts, clarifies roles, gives clear and direct feedback, instills accountability, and helps others focus their efforts on their contribution (and not on the drama!). Cy gives examples of success in the workplace and how leaders she has worked with have increased productivity through her methods. Cy's opinion that a leader requires empathy rather than sympathy is a notable addition to our list of characteristics for good leadership. j5x62cx2
