As the weather warms up and the sun grows brighter and hotter, Rachel's taking the opportunity to ask a big question that turns out to be just a little more controversial than one might expect:  Should I line dry my clothes?   Beginning with a quick survey of the history of laundry drying techniques and traditions, Rachel then looks how and why American housewives made the transition from “drying greens” and clotheslines to gas or electric tumble dryers — and how the “right-to-dry" movement in the 2000s and 2010s marked a resurgence in popularity for the humble, affordable, counter-cultural, and even occasionally illegal clothesline.   Resources referenced in this episode include:   Old and Interesting: History of Laundry  Ronald Reagan " Live Better Electrically" comercial de "GE Theatre"  "Live Better Electrically" commercial from "GE Theatre" (1950s)  Organic Housekeeping: In Which the Non-Toxic Avenger Shows You How to ... - Ellen Sandbeck - Google Books  Clothes line - Wikipedia  Drying for Freedom - Drying For Freedom Official Trailer 1 | IMDb  Connect with the Lutheran Ladies on social media in The Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group (facebook.com/groups/LutheranLadiesLounge) and on Instagram @lutheranladieslounge. J Darrin Gross  I'd like to ask you, Simon Isaacs, what is the BIGGEST RISK?   Simon Isaacs Wow, I would say the biggest risk here. Big Question, the big question.  Demand. I. Demand is the biggest risk here. You know, demand for properties, demand, if you know you only need one event, one weather event, and everybody ends up leaving. So I would say demand and weather are the biggest risk in my book, yeah, clearly, in Florida, you're, you're one, you know, one, one major weather event, or something like that from, you know, sour people souring on the on the place, or at least, and it doesn't even need to be a major weather event. It just has to be enough that people are concerned and they don't want to deal with it, right?   And let me ask you this, do you feel that that's a a local attitude, or do you think it's more of a public perception that gets promoted, you know, news, etc, after an event, public perception, you know, we end up, you know, whether it's the tornadoes, the winds, etc, it stays on the news, which obviously we want to be alerted, you know, you want the warnings and things like that. But, um, the news definitely makes it drag out a little bit longer. But it is a serious it's a serious event, you know. And the tornadoes were an eye opener last year, because everybody thinks it's hurricanes and flooding, but that's not the case. So it's that public perception is, you know, https://isaacsrealestate.com/

Episode 153In this special episode about being securely loved by God the Father, I sit down with Isaac Wicker, a Catholic licensed therapist from Minnesota with a decade of mental health experience and host of the 'Whole Human' podcast. Isaac shares his unique upbringing in a deeply Catholic family in the Communion and Liberation Catholic movement, his transformative experiences, and his innovative 12-week program, 'Known: embraced by the Heart of the Father,' which integrates psychology and Catholic faith. This conversation is an invitation to explore the security and ease that come from being securely loved by God the Father. I see myself and Isaac as representing two very different kinds of paths towards a secure attachment with God the Father - Isaac was blessed with the experience of secure attachment in childhood while I had to learn to have an “earned secure attachment” from deep healing and integration. May this episode bring hope to listeners who struggle to feel safe with God the Father, even as it provides a glimpse of the freedom that being securely loved by the Father brings.Isaac's website | Known: Embraced by the Heart of the FatherIsaac's Podcast | Whole HumanWatch this recording on YouTube.Follow me on my Instagram account @animann for more material on the integration journey and subscribe to my monthly reflections on Begin Again.CHAPTER MARKERS[00:00] Introduction and Overview[01:21] Meet the Guest: Isaac Wicker[07:32] The Importance of Big Questions[18:17] Isaac's Childhood Memories and Family Dynamics[30:25] The Importance of Secure Attachment in Repentance[38:37] Embodying Faith Organically as a Therapist[51:31] Focusing on Loving vs Fixing Someone[58:32] The Journey of Becoming[01:00:14] Operating Outside the Boxes of Psychology and Religion[01:14:38] The Known Program: Healing with God the Father[01:22:50] The Importance of Showing Up and Being Honest[01:31:40] Conclusion and Final ThoughtsREFLECTION PROMPTWhat has been your relationship with failure and repentance? Ep. 182 (Part 2 of 2) | Robert Lawrence Kuhn, producer of the popular PBS series Closer to Truth, which explores consciousness, the mystery of existence, and related topics with an open-minded approach, recently authored a remarkable article: “A Landscape of Consciousness,” in which he surveyed over 200 theories about what consciousness is. Robert tells how he inhabited each theory for a few days while writing it up, and discovered that unlike with other fields of knowledge, a study of consciousness produces more theories the more we know, rather than narrowing the field down. He emphasizes we need to be expansive with our universe of understanding of what consciousness is, and realize that how we engage with the Big Questions of life depends upon our particular theory of consciousness.Robert tells how the Big Questions, notably what is consciousness and why is there something rather than nothing, have called him all his life, leading him to create the Closer to Truth series, to explore these questions with the leading minds of our time. What Robert didn't know to begin with, but marvels about now, is how the passion for delving into the most fundamental, existential questions we face as humans unifies people around the world, from every demographic, providing a unique and wonderful point of integration. This is a fascinating, warm, engaging conversation that draws us ever farther into an exploration of the mysteries of life, where we glimpse what lies at the core of humanity. Can Doubt be a Spiritual Gift? A Conversation with Terryl Givens & Jared Halverson

Faith Matters

This week, we're excited to share a special live episode recorded at the Compass Gallery in Provo, as part of our Big Questions series with Terryl Givens. Each month, Terryl is joined by a guest for a conversation about some of our biggest theological and historical questions. In this episode, he's joined by scholar and teacher Jared Halverson. Together, Terryl and Jared explore the question: can doubt be a spiritual gift? They consider how doubt might play a meaningful role in our spiritual development, and ask whether we can reclaim faith as something relational, built on loyalty, trust, and love —  rather than a list of things we intellectually agree to.One of the most powerful ideas that emerges is that faith and doubt aren't opposites — in fact, they may need to coexist. It's often in the tension between the two that deeper discipleship takes root. Terryl and Jared also explore how the Restoration, at its core, invites us into a life of ongoing seeking and expanding, not one of perfect certainty. So if you've ever felt some fear, guilt, or shame around your questions — or worried that doubt means you're falling behind, out of reach, or off the path, this conversation is for you. We hope it offers a hopeful reframe: that the wrestle is sacred, that you're in good company, and that sometimes, this is exactly what spiritual growth looks like. And with that, here's Terryl Givens and Jared Halverson.

Robert Lawrence Kuhn (Part 1) – Exploring the Mysteries of Consciousness: Asking Life's Big Questions

Ep. 181 (Part 1 of 2) | Robert Lawrence Kuhn, producer of the popular PBS series Closer to Truth, which explores consciousness, the mystery of existence, and related topics with an open-minded approach, recently authored a remarkable article: “A Landscape of Consciousness,” in which he surveyed over 200 theories about what consciousness is. Recorded April 17th, 2025.“Consciousness is perhaps the single most unifying question that humanity can explore.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing Robert Lawrence Kuhn, author, public intellectual, producer of the PBS series Closer to Truth, which explores fundamental questions of existence (01:02)How did it feel to be writing “A Landscape of Consciousness,” a 175k-word article that surveys over 200 theories about what consciousness is (02:50)Now Robert is building a website with notated theories of consciousness that allows for theories to grow and change (11:33)Consciousness theories, unlike other fields of knowledge, grow the more we know (14:59)All the “big questions” are dependent on your theory of consciousness (18:57)Why is there something rather than nothing? What is consciousness? Two fundamental questions that have been with Robert all along (23:17)Nine levels of nothing and the deep nature of phenomenal consciousness (25:36)Why Robert didn't include his own theory in his survey, and then did—in 71 words (26:58)What does the explosion of consciousness theories say about consciousness? (30:27)The self-referential paradox of understanding consciousness (35:04)How to structure and organize the amalgam of theories (37:08)Roughly half the theories went into materialism categories (39:02)Challenge theorists conclude we can never understand consciousness (41:03)Robert's theory categories: materialism, non reductive physicalism, quantum, integrated information, panpsychism, monism, dualism, idealism, illusory, anomalies and altered states (42:18)What kind of knowledge do psychedelics and altered states offer? They also touch on the concept of communal tipping and how it relates to broader societal ideas. Tune in for a raw, honest, and wide-ranging discussion from the couple.
