The 40s and 50s post-war migration brought tough working conditions in Chicago which offered stability over the miserable sharecropper existence of the Delta.  Both were fodder for the some of the very best in classic blues. The production lines of Detroit and other cities on the Eastern seaboard were models of a different kind of work that the Industrial Age had to offer. But the West Coast wasn't the place you'd expect to find the blues: shipyards, agriculture, and urban sprawl would aggregate so many different styles that rhythm and blues was a fusion of the many different sensibilities that were brought with both performer and listener alike westward from east of the Mississippi. Having the hub of the world of entertainment in the Southland didn't hurt either. We'll be browsing the sounds of some of the greats: McCracklin, Fulson, Otis, Mayfield, and (of course) T-Bone Walker in the Deeper Roots morning show today. West Coast Blues led to blues-based rock in large part because of the exposure to the many different styles of the mid-century blues bands and solo rockers. West Coast Blues Roots is the name of our show this morning on KOWS-LP Occidental.

Liam St. John is a chart-topping blues-rock singer, songwriter, and performer currently located in Los Angeles, California. Liam joins us this week for an open, honest conversation about how living your truth and being honest to yourself, lead to happiness and creative inspiration. The Voice competitor comes on to discuss living in South Africa, finding love on The Voice, and the inspiration behind his latest album "Stripped Back". Liam's debut full-length project “stripped back” reached #2 in Top Blues Albums globally. “Eastham Prison Farm Blues” off of Liam's brand new album was placed on one of Spotify's largest blues editorials “Blues Roots” with nearly half a million followers. Before his big break on The Voice, Liam St. John hustled in the trenches of the music industry for years, playing at open mics, empty dive bars, and making nothing except the occasional well-whiskey or slice of pizza. St. John and his band finally broke through with an opportunity to open for the British soul-rock sensation, Jacob Banks. They have since toured up and down the west coast, and across the southern states of America from Los Angeles, CA to Miami, FL. Thank you Liam for coming on StoryTime and sharing your story. Please note: There was an editing error in this portion of the show. That has been fixed. In addition, the opening Thanksgiving montage was reinserted due to popular demand. In this series of two shows we explore the Blues and Folk roots of Led Zeppelin. There is no question that Zeppelin borrowed heavily. We'll hear on Robert Plant lifts melody lines and lyrics to construct some of the most icon songs of the 1970s and early 80s. Undoubtedly Zeppelin's music launched thousands of bands and changed the direction of popular music (while it's not included in these shows, even rapper Sean Puffy, Puff Daddy Combs lifted the guitar riff from Zeppelin's Kashmir to create a top hit including a joint appearance with Jimmy Page on Saturday Night Live: now that's being influential). It's been my experience that most modern days blues music listeners came to the genre via The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, or Led Zeppelin. When I discussed the idea for this show with regular listeners, it became apparent that most had gotten the Led outta their system some many years ago. Yet it was no surprise that by massive numbers, the positive feedback on this show has been ginormous! Evidently exploring the musical roots of Zeppelin has rekindled a long forgotten love. Please, enjoy the show. And thank-you for listening.Oh. And by the way, after more than a decade, Robert Plant has reunited with Alison Krauss for a new album. Trusted critics report that this collaboration, Raise the Roof, is BETTER than their Grammy Award winning album, Raising Sand. Sue Filmer joins me this week in The Engine Room to discuss her musical journey which began with Sue being a trained dancer. Sue was born in New South Wales and moved to Adelaide when she was 20 to attend the only Contemporary Dance Course on offer in Australia at the time, which was at Flinders University. Sue worked in various jobs while studying and at one stage was employed to dance at events in Adelaide, prior to joining her first band 'Click Clack' as a percussionist. Sue has always loved music, right from her earliest memories of going to see her father who was a professional musician in NSW, performing with the Elizabethan Orchestra, Jazz with Jim Barnard, Black & White Minstrel Shows, Big Bands, Opera's and Ballets. Sue took up percussion in her 20s, she was sharing a house with musicians and wanted to be able to jam with them, so she began having lessons with Jim Bailey. Sue continued to play with various bands until taking time off to raise her 2 daughters. In 2016 after being encouraged by her husband and brother to start drumming again, Sue and her husband Danny began performing together as the Duo SUEDAN. The duo perform Blues/Roots and World Music, they also run an Open Mic once a month at the Ekhidna Winery, McLaren Vale. Make sure that you subscribe so that you don't miss the next episode. Music: "Band It About" theme was written and performed by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Showcasing American music and music making during the Great Depression, "Hard Luck Blues" presents more than 200 photographs created by the New Deal's Farm Security Administration photography program. With an appreciation for the amateur and the local, FSA photographers depicted a range of musicians sharing the regular music of everyday life, from informal songs in migrant work camps, farmers' homes, barn dances, and on street corners to organized performances at church revivals, dance halls, and community festivals. "Hard Luck Blues" features photographs by Jack Delano, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, Marion Post Wolcott, and others. Speaker Biography: Documentary photographer Rich Remsberg has worked on the professional staff of the Indiana University School of Journalism and as the Visual Resources Specialist with the Indiana University Digital Library Program. In addition to working on his own projects, he works as a photo and film researcher on several programs for PBS. His publication and exhibition credits include the New York Times, MSNBC/Newsweek, and the Christian Science Monitor.
